Jerkass isn't to be listed when its sub-tropes are like Jerk With A Heart Of Jerk.

* {{Jerkass}}: A very unlikable person to say the least. Putting aside the fact he's a brutal tyrant, he's also a massive douchebag to anyone, his followers included sometimes, and he loves to taunt his enemies about their defeat like he does with Yoda in ''Revenge of the Sith'' or Luke in ''Return of the Jedi''.

* CloningGambit: He considered Project Necromancer, which was a clone research project that involved "M-count" (midichlorian) transfer, to be a vital asset to him and his Empire. It's implied that Project Necromancer was how Sidious planned to procure Force-sensitive clone bodies for his spirit to possess, though ''The Rise of Skywalker'' shows that he was able to only have one degenerating clone body that needed an Ommin harness to move around and was only fully functional after performing a Force drain on Rey and Ben Solo.

* NoNameGiven: Palpatine was originally just referred to as "The Emperor" before he was officially given the last name of Palpatine. Even then, his first name, Sheev, would not officially be discussed until 2014's ''[[Literature/StarWarsTarkin Tarkin]]''.
* NotAfraidOfYouAnymore: ''The entire galaxy'' shows up to destroy his ultimate fleet after being fed up with his years of oppression and rule by fear.

** After barely escaping the Zillo Beast's wrath with his life in ''WesternAnimation/TheCloneWars'', his decision to clone the deceased creature ultimately damages his long-term plans in ''WesternAnimation/TheBadBatch''. While Palpatine did learn from his mistake and has the Zillo Beast clone held on Mount Tantiss on Weyland instead of Coruscant, he unintentionally gave Omega the perfect diversion to use when she makes her move to escape in the series finale. This sets off a chain of events that costs Sidious not only Mount Tantiss, but also his most valuable scientist Royce Hemlock as well as all the research done for Project Necromancer, which Nala Se destroyed in defiance to the Empire after she was broken out of imprisonment by Clone Force 99.

** In ''[[ComicBook/StarWarsDarthVader2020 Darth Vader (2020)]]'', Sidious does it again after Vader came back from his investigation of Padmé's death. But this time, it is far more violent : he blasts his apprentice with his Force Lightning, allows his Royal Guards to subdue him (and taking away Vader's lightsaber from him), Force-choked him and belittle him very harshly at the same time and Force-crushing three of four of Vader's prosthetics and most of his armor, before dropping him on Mustafar to repair himself without the Force (Sidious forbids him to do so) and sending the Sith assassin Ochi of Bestoon against him. All of this is to strengthen Vader to the Dark Side of the Force by "teaching him fear again to bring him back to power".

** Played with in another twisted way. Palpatine would sometimes present Vader gifts or most of anything he would ask out of him, including planets, but there would always be a deadly SecretTestOfCharacter attached. One infamous occasion was when Palpatine gave Vader ownership of Mustafar and a Sith artifact containing the spirit of Sith heretic [[AxCrazy Momin]]. It was given to allegedly help blueprint a nice castle for Vader on Mustafar, but Palpatine was fully aware of Momin's personality and inevitably trying to kill his apprentice.

** His treatment of Vader post-Mustafar compared to his other apprentices. True this can also be PragmaticVillainy as Palpatine needed an apprentice. But there are multiple examples: one, he allows Vader to adjust his suit as he wishes; two, he has more faith in Vader than in the Inquisitors, Cylo's potential replacements for Vader and any of his other apprentices; three, he could easily replace the crippled Vader with any of the Inquisitors but he choose to keep Vader (who is still very powerful despite his injuries) as his apprentice instead; and last, he seems to care about Vader (as much as a Sith Lord could) as when he senses that Darth Vader is in danger in ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'', he immediately departs for Mustafar and thus saves his life (and again, he could have left Vader to die on Mustafar but chose not to). But none of these stops Palpatine from replacing Vader if he sees someone more fit to be his apprentice, as shown in ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi'' with Luke.

** He delivers a serious one to Darth Maul and Savage Opress. He actually looks like he's having ''fun'' during the fight, and not once is he seen to struggle in any way, save a very brief look of concern when Maul comes at him in full-on RoaringRampageOfRevenge after Savage's death, and it's quickly gone. The brothers are doomed the moment Sidious walks into the room, and the audience knows it.

* SmugSnake: The decades of success he achieved in the Prequel Trilogy has finally gotten into Palpatine's head by the time of ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi''. Though he does pull a pretty good trick in giving the Rebels the location of the shield generator to lure them into a trap, he has become simply too arrogant to acknowledge the possibility that the Rebels could overcome it. [[InsufferableGenius After all, if his previous gambits and plans have worked without a hitch, why would this one fail]]?

to:

* SmugSnake: Palpatine is one of the most powerful Force users ever and he knows it. Thus, he'll be cackling and relishing every moment he toys with his opponent, confident that the outcome of the match is entirely in his hands. But, whenever facing a threat that he can't easily dispatch, the smugness starts to peel away into frustration and then into terror, when he's in actual danger. And, sometimes, his overconfidence has nearly (and has) cost him fatally.
** Confronted by Mace Windu and some Jedi masters who have come to arrest him, Palpatine is unfazed by the threat and begins the fight with a BadassBoast. However, once Mace has him cornered, Palpatine begs for Anakin to save him. While Palpatine was playing up his helplessness to manipulate Anakin and turn him to the Dark Side, one can pinpoint the exact moment where Mace is about to strike him dead and Palpatine's exaggerated anguish morphs into legitimate horror, reduced to pathetically blubbering for his life. If Anakin hadn't intervened, Palpatine would have died a humiliated coward.
** In his battle with Yoda, the first thing Palpatine does is fire Force Lightning at him and gloat about the Sith's victory over the Jedi. But once Yoda recovers and proves more resilient than expected, the second thing Palpatine tries to do is run away. When Yoda cuts him off, he pointedly calls him out on it.
--->'''Yoda:''' If so powerful you are, why leave?

* ActionPolitician: His political manuvering of the Senate is not the only thing that makes him dangerous; he is also a Sith Lord who is a formidable opponent in battle and has mastered powerful Sith magic that few of his fellow Sith would've ever dreamed of.

* TheCakeIsALie:
** To the Separatists as a whole, as they only existed as an enemy for Palpatine and the Republic to defeat so that he could garner enough public adoration to openly declare himself ruler of the galaxy, and by the end of the Clone Wars, control over their corporations has been seized by the Empire. While Palpatine could seize power regardless of which side won, it's clear that the Confederacy's greed-fueled secessionist movement was set up for failure from the start.
** Dooku was under the impression that Grievous would be used as the scapegoat for all the Separatists' war crimes, and that he would be able to join the Galactic Empire in a high position alongside Palpatine. Sidious never intended to keep Dooku alive, and he readily discards him for Anakin during the Battle of Coruscant.

* FakeKidnapping: The Battle of Coruscant begins when Darth Sidious orders General Grievous to kidnap Chancellor Palpatine, and it's implied that Sidious leaked the Nexus Route coordinates to Grievous for the purpose of this major assault. Unbeknownst to every Separatist except Dooku, Palpatine and Sidious were the same person, and he orchestrated his own kidnapping, primarily to lure Anakin to kill Dooku on the ''Invisible Hand''. [[TheCakeIsALie Dooku was unaware that he was never meant to survive the battle.]]

* TheFarmerAndTheViper: During the Clone Wars, the Jedi had stepped in to rescue Palpatine when his life was threatened, such as the Zillo Beast incident and various assassination attempts. [[UngratefulBastard He still went through with his plot to destroy the Jedi and executes Order 66.]]

* FaceDeathWithDespair: Given Palpatine's obsession of [[ImmortalitySeeker obtaining immortality]], it's heavily implied that dying is the one thing Palpatine truly fears, as he always reacts with horror whenever he's about to die. Case in point, Palpatine begs Anakin to save him from being killed by Mace Windu, and dies screaming in two of his deaths.
