- An Arm and a Leg: Watson has a prosthetic right leg, due to having the lower half blown off whilst serving in Afghanistan.
- Disabled in the Adaptation: Whilst he was not unscathed in the original canon, here Watson has a prosthetic leg as opposed to it merely being badly injured.
- The Gambling Addict: Mentions at the beginning of the first story that this is one of the reasons why he cannot stay in stable living for much longer.
- Race Lift: The John Watson of the original stories was Caucasian; here, he is black.
- Shell-Shocked Veteran: A veteran of Afghanistan, Watson is noticeably on-edge around his first corpse since the war.
- The Watson: You'll never guess why.

- Adaptational Attractiveness: Described in the stories as being incredibly skinny and almost hawk-like.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Sherlock has ADHD.
- Amateur Sleuth: As in the original tales, Holmes bills himself as a "consulting detective", assisting the police when they are troubled, but also taking private cases.
- Badass Longcoat: Wears one everywhere.
- Cuteness Proximity: Gains sparkly anime eyes when he learns of Watson's dog.
- Ditzy Genius: Invoked when Watson claims him to be talented in both forensic science and biochemistry, but knows bugger all about popular television such as Doctor Who.
- Sherlock Scan: Possesses an incredible ability to deduce a person's backstory merely by observing and drawing on the logical conclusions.
