The male protagonist of the series. Tsukune is an all around average human until one day his father comes home with an application to a mysterious academy he found. Taking it as a sign from above, Tsukune's parents send him to Yokai Academy, which Tsukune learns is a school for monsters! Luckily Tsukune meets Moka Akashiya, his main love interest who coincidentally is a vampire! Along the way, he and Moka make new friends, mostly members of his unwanted harem, and try to survive in the dangerous school. Later in the series he develops vampiric powers thanks to blood injections from Moka. His new power is sealed by a Holy Lock, which keeps him from becoming a Ghoul. Even with this detriment though, Tsukune manages to take life one life-threatening attack from a monster at a time!

* AboveTheInfluence: He may very well be the living, breathing incarnate of this trope; no matter how many times girls proposition him, sometimes while half-naked, he will turn them down. It's taken UpToEleven in the Flower Offering arc: in an effort to avoid an ArrangedMarriage, Mizore [[spoiler:doped him with a powerful aphrodisiac made from a local flower known to the yuki-onna, said aphrodisiac having a reputation in the monster world for being among the best, and then pretty much threw her naked body at him while literally ''begging'' him to knock her up]]; even with all of those factors, Tsukune ''still'' managed to resist her advances.
* AccidentalPervert: Less compared to other harem heroes and mostly in the anime; he accidentally touched Moka's legs during their first meeting. In season 2 of the anime there are some more straight examples: he accidentally gropes Moka's sister in the first episode and, much later, has a really SuggestiveCollision with Kurumi and Mizore's respective mothers.
* ActionSurvivor: Before his badass upgrade, he adapted rather quickly to his circumstances while he was still TheTeamNormal.
* AdaptationalWimp: Tsukune TookALevelInBadass several times in the manga. The anime version, on the other hand...
* AllLovingHero: With his CharacterDevelopment, Tsukune wants to prove he can reach an understanding with anyone, even the evilest of monsters. The Bus Driver implies that he will become the link between the Human and Monster worlds in the name of peace. [[spoiler:This is likely why the Headmaster and the Bus Driver picked Tsukune to someday takeover Yokai Academy in the epilogue.]]
* AttractiveBentGender: In the yuki-onna arc. You would not even know it is a guy before he took off the wig.
* AxCrazy: His ghoul form, what with its penchant for violence, insane laughter, and constant uttering of the word "kill."

When he first became a Ghoul (before he gained the Holy Lock), he gave ''Inner Moka'' a hard time when she tried to subdue his rampage. (although granted she was still a bit weakened from the water sprinklers from a trap by a bad guy.) While the Holy Lock does keep his Ghoul powers subdued (which allows him to keep his sanity), it starts to slip through if he gets too pissed off, or takes too much damage. Later on, he starts learning how to access and control them.]]

** During the manga's BeachEpisode, while the girls cater to the male guests at Marin's hostel, Tsukune gets a fair amount of attention from the girls. It's the first time ''human'' girls have taken an interest in him.
** A good thing to factor in on his magnetism would be the combination of his increasingly [[{{Bishonen}} good looks]] and his ''very'' well toned body.
* CharacterDevelopment: Tsukune starts the series as a somewhat stereotypical harem lead, but has developed into a rather confident appealing individual.
* ChivalrousPervert: He has his moments of perversion; for example, his initial reason for wanting to join the Swimming Club (before finding out about a vampire's KryptoniteFactor) was so he could see Moka in a bikini. Nonetheless, he's ''much'' more respectful of girls than the other boys at Yokai Academy, who openly lust after women and publicly comment on their [[BuxomIsBetter breasts]].
* ClassRepresentative: Elected in the first season (against his vehement protests). He's not especially smart or much of a stickler, and is never seen wielding any actual authority, but most of his class sees him as a reliable person, and he is an outspoken advocate for peace.
* ConvenientlySeated: Tsukune sits on the second-last seat with the window on the left. Moka sits behind him, Mizore sits in front of him, and Kurumu sits next to Moka.
* CoveredWithScars: In the later chapters. [[BeautyIsNeverTarnished Not that this]] [[MrFanservice makes him any less hot.]]
* CreepyGood: Extremely nice guy, but also becomes one of the most frightening monster in the series.
* CurbStompBattle: Both at the giving and receiving ends.
** A notable example would be his trashing of Kuyou in their rematch in the Fairy Tale arc.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Most of the UnwantedHarem, [[AndZoidberg and Ginei]] were homicidal maniacs before Tsukune and Moka came along.
* {{Determinator}}: Even as a regular human, nothing short of death will stop Tsukune from doing what he feels is necessary. Turns into an ImplacableMan after getting his ghoul powers, as he now has the power to completely shrug off any attempts to stop him, with not even serious injury doing anything to deter him.
* {{Dhampir}}: Because of Moka injecting him with her blood, Tsukune becomes a half-vampire and only retains some of his human side because of the lock seal on his arm. [[spoiler:He eventually gives up the last of his humanity to save Moka and becomes a full vampire.]]
* DisguisedInDrag: During the yuki-onna arc, Tsukune has to disguise himself as a girl to get into the coming of age ceremony, where men are not allowed.
* DissonantSerenity: When Moka [[spoiler:injects him with her blood during fights]], he seems indifferent and detached, until he really gets going.
** Later in the Manga, this kind of demeanor warns that his SuperPoweredEvilSide is starting to take over.
* DualTonfas: Toho Fuhai taught him to use the Muei-Tou technique that lets Tsukune create tonfas made of light that can block Aqua's Jigen-Tou.
* DynamicEntry: Uses this on a guy who was threatening his harem with a gun (in this verse, guns can apparently kill monsters no matter how powerful they are).
* EmergencyTransformation: Kuyou fatally wounds him and to save his life, Inner Moka injects Tsukune with her blood which starts his transformation into a ghoul.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Subverted with [[MistakenForGay Fang-Fang]], who was actually trying to recruit him into the [[TheTriadsAndTheTongs Chinese Mafia]]. That said, Fang-Fang still has [[HoYay his moments]], such as the second panel season II chapter 28.
* FirstFriend: He's the first friend Moka made as she had troubles with bullying when she went to a human middle school.
* FlashStep: When using his ghoul powers, he's capable of moving so quickly it appears he's teleporting to anybody that isn't sufficiently powerful.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: By the [[spoiler: end of Season II, Tsukune is now a full vampire, yet he's as friendly as when he was human and his goal is still to create a world where humans and monsters can coexist in peace.]]
* GodzillaThreshold: Once or twice, unleashing his [[SuperpoweredEvilSide ghoul form]] was the only way to defeat the current BigBad. Keep in mind that Tsukune's ghoul transformation is completely AxCrazy, a danger to friend and foe alike, and potentially irreversible.
* GoodIsNotSoft: He's every bit a NiceGuy, willing to TurnTheOtherCheek when wronged, but when pushed too far, he shows no mercy. Just ask Kuyou and Gyokuro.
* GoodOldFisticuffs:
** [[{{Foil}} In contrast]] to KickChick Inner!Moka, he fights with simple punches.
** Later he found a way to put back his good 'ol fists into good use when he duked it out with [[spoiler: Gyokuro Shuzen]] in a slug-fest of epic proportions. [[spoiler: He won by ramming his fist into her gut.]]
* GoodWingsEvilWings: His Jet Black/Ultimate Ghoul form deserves special mention.
* GrewASpine: His most important CharacterDevelopment is deciding to stop letting Moka and his monsters friends do all the fighting for him and make any risky decisions to protect those he cares about even [[spoiler:choosing to give up his humanity to save Moka's life]].
* GroundPound: When performing his "Bakuryuujin" technique- which involves him smashing his fists into the ground , [[ShockwaveStomp creating massive explosive shockwaves which sends enemies flying.]] Really a good way for clearing out a crowd.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler: Suffers one after learning that the Outer Moka is a fake personality created by the Rosario in order to keep Moka's seal safe. End result? He begins to drift away into an inescapable sea of mental darkness.]]
* HorrifyingHero: Being a NiceGuy does not keep his ghoul status from terrifying his friends.
* HumanoidAbomination: His [[spoiler:ultimate ghoul mode of Season II looks like Tsukune with black skin and large bat wings. Good thing he got better.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He may be a genuinely nice and considerate guy, but since he's a normal human at a school for monsters, all of whom have different needs and issues than humans, he sometimes does things that accidentally insult or upset the people he cares about, or can misunderstand how they feel about things. However, whenever it's brought to his attention the truth of the situation, he goes out of the way to clear up any misunderstandings and work things out between him and the other person.
* InstantRunes: Part of his upgrade, demonstrated in Chapter 43 of Season II.
* LetsGetDangerous: When he unleashes more of his power by unlocking the 2nd seal of his Holy Lock in his fight with the psychotic step mother.
* LightningBruiser: Becoming a ghoul gives him all of the powers of a vampire with none of the weaknesses, making him just as fast, strong, and tough as Inner Moka.
* LoserProtagonist: At the start of the series, it was pointed out [[ButtMonkey how he was ridiculously average]]. But then he TookALevelInBadass and became {{Bishonen}}.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He falls for Moka from the first time he meets her.
* LoveFatherLoveSon: A very strange and convoluted gender-swapped example. [[spoiler:The Outer Moka Tsukune is in love with is actually an amnesiac replica of Moka's mother, Akasha. At the end of the manga, the rosary is destroyed and Akasha sacrifices herself to destroy Alucard permanently. While Tsukune is saddened by losing Outer Moka, he stays with Inner Moka whose personality becomes indistinguishable from that of Akasha's copy.]]
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: He is kinda a wimp at times who is either overly kind or scared, making him the Feminine Boy to Inner Moka's Masculine Girl. They outgrow this trope by the end of the manga where Tsukune is now both physically stronger and more decisive while Inner Moka has opened up to her emotions and acts girlier.
* MadeOfIron: Even before he got super powers, it was almost impossible to knock him out.
* MegatonPunch: His typical finisher.
* MoralityPet: He is somewhat this to Inner Moka, and tends to keep her from going too far, first seen when he defended Kurumu.
* MrFanservice: Plenty of examples in the series. [[spoiler:Even his ghoul form looks good.]]
* NiceGuy: He's the kindest and most considerate male among the entire cast, never intentionally demeaning anybody, male or female. Even when he acts InnocentlyInsensitive, the instant he learns that he did so, he goes out of his way to make up for it and never do it again.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In rejecting Mizore's advances during the Flower Offering arc, he essentially ensured that Mizore would be stuck in an ArrangedMarriage to Miyabi.
* {{Nosebleed}}: Gets these at the sight of FanService.
* NoGuyWantsToBeChased: Most of the girls in his UnwantedHarem are quite romantically aggressive, except for Moka who is the only one he pursues from the beginning.
* NotAfraidOfYouAnymore: In Season II, he's not very effective against Kuyou during their rematch, and Ruby realizes it's because Tsukune recalls how Kuyou nearly killed him before, so he's subconsciously retreating in fear. But then Ruby jumps into the way of his final blow, and Kuyou gleefully tells him that Fang-Fang and Yukari had been killed by Gairen, another subdivision leader, and actively taunting him over his weaknesses and how much he wants him to suffer in fear and despair before he kills him. At this, Tsukune manages to overcome his fear, effortlessly repelling Kuyou's attack before turning the tables on him.

* OurGhoulsAreCreepier: Ghouls are the result of a person being injected with vampire blood and managing to survive, with it noted to be a rare occurence. As a ghoul, Tsukune has all of the physical abilities of a vampire with none of the normal weaknesses, but in exchange [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity risks turning him into a mindless beast that lashes out at everything]].
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: He cries and begs [[spoiler:Akasha]] to stay with him [[spoiler:after she reveals she's the original personality of Outer Moka and shares her memories of Tsukune, but she must disappear in front of him once more in order to destroy Alucard for good]].
* PowerLimiter: The Holy Lock around his wrist, which keeps his SuperPoweredEvilSide in check. If he uses his powers too much, it begins to crack. [[spoiler: The lock's actually a tool designed to safely transform a human into a monster. It's been slowly adapting his body to the powers granted to him by Moka's blood while suppressing the negative side effects. As of Chapter 66, he's completed the transformation and become a Shinso vampire; thus, he no longer requires the Lock.]]
* ProgressivelyPrettier: Can be seen as a mixture of ArtEvolution, the present day Tsukune looks ''a lot'' different than what he did at the start of the series. This has been acknowledge in series as well. [[spoiler: Turns out there's a good reason for this: Moka's blood and the Holy Lock have been slowly transforming him into a vampire. In the end he becomes a full fledged vampire with none of the ill side effects that plagued him the rest of the series.]]
* PsychoticSmirk: If you see him sporting one of these or a full-blown SlasherSmile, ''RUN LIKE HELL'' because it means his Ghoul powers have gone out of control.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: When taking on multiple opponents, his preference is to knock opponents out with quick, 'weak' blows.
* RidiculouslyAverageGuy: He has got [[OnlySaneMan plenty of common sense]], but he is not especially stupid or smart (even his test scores were right in the middle), does not have any special talents, and has lived a completely ordinary life. Yukari wasted no time lampshading this when they first met. [[TookALevelInBadass This quickly changes]].
* SecondYearProtagonist: In season II, Tsukune and most of his group at Yokai Academy are sophomores, now allowing the inclusion of freshmen as well as upperclassmen in the cast.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Manly man to Fang-Fang's sensitive guy.
* SensorCharacter: Thanks to Moka's training, Tsukune becomes able to sense the demonic aura of other monsters.
* ShonenHair: Thanks to ArtEvolution, his hair looks more normal and straighter later in season II.
* ShroudedInMyth: He's built up a reputation in the underworld for wiping out an entire branch of Fairy Tale, which was actually Gin and Haiji's doing. To be fair, he's still quite powerful.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Moka-sexual. No matter how much the rest of the UnwantedHarem loves him, Tsukune only has eyes for Moka and makes clear both the Outer and Inner personalities mean a lot to him.
* StrangerInAStrangeSchool: A human who accidentally gets accepted to AllGhoulsSchool in AnotherDimension.
* SuperhumanTransfusion: Tsukune got his vampire/ghoul powers from repeatedly having Moka's blood injected into him. Considering she sucked out a lot of his original blood as well, it's not surprising that the ratio became skewed. [[spoiler: In the series finale, he injects his own blood into Moka to save her life, turning them both into Shinso Vampires.]]
* SupernaturallyDeliciousAndNutritious: Moka just ''cannot'' stop swooning over how tasty his blood is to her. The taste of his blood is the only thing Kokoa will admit to like about him.
* SuperpowerRussianRoulette: Both gaining vampire powers and [[spoiler:Touhu Fuhai's 109 needle surgery]] have low success rates and high death rates. Being a {{determinator}} (and [[PlotArmor the main character]]), he made it through both.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: Too instinctive to really be actively evil, it is pretty much TheBerserker, which is why he needs the PowerLimiter to keep sane when it first appeared.
* SuperSpeed: Not quite at Gin's level, but he's now able to outrun ''vampires''. Later on, he's fast enough to [[ConvectionSchmonvection outrun heat]].
* SuperStrength: After he TookALevelInBadass, he has the superhuman strength of a vampire. A notable example would be catching a huge-ass, multi-ton pillar flying straight towards him with his ''bare hands''.
* SupportingProtagonist: While the story is from his point of view, Moka is the arguably {{the hero}}ine of the series, serving as the strongest member of their group and often taking on the BigBad. He becomes more active in part 2.
* TaintedVeins: The usual sign of his ghoul form being in control is when he gains these across his neck and both sides of his face.
* TheTeamNormal: In the early part of the series, Tsukune is a human with no special powers while everyone else in the Newspaper Club is a monster with their own set of abilities. This is subverted later on, Tsukune starts gaining the powers of a vampire due to Moka injecting him with her blood.
* TechnicalPacifist: He doesn’t like fighting and always wants a peaceful solution but becomes more than willing to throw down in order to protect his friends.
* ThisIsUnforgivable:
** His word-for-word reaction in chapter 50 after finding out that Miyabi not only invaded Mizore's homeland, but [[ForcefulKiss stole]] [[SacredFirstKiss Mizore's first kiss]].
