This page is dedicated exclusively to ''One Piece'''s {{Posthumous Character}}s. By default, all characters listed here passed on long ago, or are currently presumed deceased. You have been warned.

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:In General]]
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: Their deaths tend to be very drawn out and dramatic. Kuina is probably the only exception, getting a comparatively lame death instead, although her death was still a big source of angst; partially ''because'' her death was so lame and anticlimactic for a girl who had sworn she'd be the strongest swordswoman alive.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: Many of them are {{Parental Substitute}}s who taught a thing or two to characters in the present, so naturally they die in order to propel them forward.
* PosthumousCharacter: All these characters are dead by the time the series starts. Kuina is the only exception (at least in the 4Kids anime dub, where she is permanently crippled by a bunch of {{Sore Loser}}s and has her dream crushed, certainly a FateWorseThanDeath.
* WalkingSpoiler: Because these characters tend to play a major role in shaping the personalities and goals of several other important characters, they end up being this by default.

->''" Don't you always say that you want to become the world's number one swordsman? Papa says that girls will never be the world's number one. It's good that you're a guy. I want to become the world's best too"''

Zoro's childhood rival and the daughter of the Dojo owner Koshiro. She defeated Zoro about 2000 times, but believed she would eventually plateau due to being a girl. She's challenged by Zoro to become the best swordmaster in the world, but dies in an accident later.
-----
* ACupAngst: Inverted. The fact she was developing breasts, period, was the source of angst because they reminded her that she was becoming a woman. Very uncomfortable real world associations with young girls having fear/poor self esteem/self hate for how their bodies naturally develop ensues.
* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: The manga never went into specifics about her having any emotional problems she had before her death, but the anime expanded over her angst about becoming a woman (which was only worsened by her father's StayInTheKitchen mentality).
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Well, Arrogant Swordswoman in any event. She was tougher than even most of the adults in her dojo, and not at all afraid to flaunt it.
* BadassAdorable: Don't be fooled by her young age and cute looks; she was stronger than most of the adults in her dojo.
* CoolSword: Her katana Wado Ichimonji. Zoro took it up after her death, and went on to develop his signature "three-sword" style with it.
* DroppedABridgeOnHer: [[DeathByFallingOver She dies offscreen after falling]] [[StaircaseTumble down a flight of stairs.]] It's never confirmed what caused her to die, but the ominous thing that we ''are'' told is that she had an unsheathed katana out... [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice and if she fell in just the wrong way...]]
* FateWorseThanDeath: Her fate in the 4Kids dub. Rather than dying by accident, she is brutally beaten to where she is crippled and unable to fulfill her dream. [[FridgeBrilliance This fits in well with the theme of the show of the importance of dreams, as Oda says the reason the foes are spared from death is because remaining alive to see their dreams crumble is a more fitting and brutal punishment.]] [[FridgeHorror Then you remember this happens to a young girl and just how]] '''[[FridgeHorror badly]]''' [[FridgeHorror she must have been beaten...]]
* GoalInLife: Hers is to become the greatest swordsman ever, and one she shared with Zoro. Her death via falling down some stairs emotionally broke Zoro, because they were supposed to reach that dream together, so he constantly pushes himself to do it in her memory, if only for closure.
* IdenticalStranger: Tashigi is one for her. Zoro... wasn't happy about it.
* LifeWillKillYou: This is her fate in the manga version. [[DeathByFallingOver She dies offscreen after falling]] [[StaircaseTumble down a flight of stairs.]]
* LittleMissBadass: She was stronger than most of the adults in her dojo and defeated a young Zoro 2001 times.
* MasterSwordsman: She was even more skilled than young Zoro who, in return, was far stronger than all the adults. However, she claimed she would lose her skills after her body would've grown.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Despite being only an eleven years old girl, she was one of the strongest fighter in her dojo, to the point Zoro could never defeat her.
* RealityEnsues: As much of a badass she was, she was still human, and something mundane as falling down the stairs is lethal for her.
* TheRival: To young Zoro. Zoro defeated all the adults in the dojo but Kuina constantly beat him, so he trains and challenges her thousands of times in hope to defeat her once. Kuina always won.
* StaircaseTumble: She died by falling down some stairs, which compared to the others' DyingMomentOfAwesome deaths, is really lame. However, there was a nasty footnote attached to this- it's not clear if a fall down the stairs by itself killed her or if it had something to do with the fact she was carrying an ''[[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice unsheathed katana.]]''
* StayInTheKitchen: This was about to be invoked on her by her father, who believes that women cannot be as physically strong as men. After she dies, he recognizes it was a huge mistake.
* UnkemptBeauty: Kuina was very pretty, despite having short hair and boyish clothes. Even one of Zoro's classmates noticed how cute she was.

Nami and Nojiko's adoptive mother and a former Marine, she was a strong-willed lady that lived at Cocoyashi village with her adoptive daughters. She was killed by Arlong after deciding to use her money to save her daughters instead.
-----
* ActionMom: The adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko and she ''was'' a Marine.
* BadassLongcoat: She wore one when she was a Marine, which implies she was a Captain or another high-ranking officer.
* BerserkButton: In a flashback, she gave a boy a hard punch when Nami reveals he said her tangerines "sucked".
* BoomHeadshot: How Arlong kills her in the manga. The anime tones it down by making the kill shot a blast to the chest.
* {{Bowdlerised}}: Her fate in the 4Kids version, where she's imprisoned in a dungeon instead of being shot in the head. Apparently 4Kids overlooked the fact that this means she had to have ''starved to death in the dungeon''.
* CallToAgriculture: After a short career as a strong marine soldier, she retired to live as a modest tangerine farmer once she adopted Nami and Nojiko.
* DeadPersonConversation: In the anime, Nami imagines herself saying goodbye to Belle-Mère and her reluctance to let go of her childhood home. Then it turns out to be ''more'' than just her imagination, as the ''actual spirit'' of Belle-Mère gives her a reassuring push like she won't be bothered by Nami embarking on an adventure and to get going already and not feel bad about it anymore.
* DeathByDespair: Barely averted in her backstory. She had fought in a terrible battle that destroyed a city, ended up severely injured and was just waiting for her almost sure demise... then she saw little Nojiko carrying baby Nami in her arms and regained the will to live, taking the little girls in.
* DelinquentHair: "Girl Power". And cool too.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: Even with Arlong pointing a gun at her, she just tells her daughters she loves them with a smile on her face.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Shot in the head point blank by Arlong. In the anime, this is toned down by having her shot in the chest.
* FamousLastWords: "Nojiko! Nami! I love you!"
* FieryRedhead: Red haired with a temper to match. Just don't threaten her daughters.
* FormerTeenRebel: She was a renowned trouble maker in her youth.
* GoodParents: Unorthodox, true, but she tried to do right by her girls (including a time when she was so broke, she lived off of tangerines for a month just so Nami and Nojiko could have a more rounded diet).
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking: One of the many good characters seen with a cigarette.
* GoOutWithASmile: Before she's shot, she smiles at Nami and Nojiko and tells them that she loves them with a grin on her face.
* HiddenDepths: A retroactive example. The people of her village were genuinely shocked that Belle-Mère the troublemaker would join the Marines. And flashbacks into Belle-mère's Marine days shows her peers describing her as reliable.
* HeroicSacrifice: She gives up her own life so that her daughters can live.
* HotBlooded: She is quite impulsive, letting her emotions get the better of her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Belle-Mère was an impulsive, mischievous troublemaker (especially in her youth), but was also brave, dependable, and a good mother to her daughters.
* LosingAShoeInTheStruggle: Her sandals are flung off from the force of being shot when she gets killed, exemplifying how violent her murder was. Some adaptations of the scene show only one falling off, while updates to it show both tumbling loose.
* LovableRogue: While she was renowned delinquent, she was also beloved by Cocoyashi villagers.
* MamaBear: Towards Nami and Nojiko. First, when they were younger (Nami an infant and Nojiko a toddler), Belle-Mère sailed in a raging storm to get them to a doctor and refused to be treated until her (future) daughters were taken care of first. Second, the only reason she did her HeroicSacrifice was to ensure the safety of her daughters.
* MeaningfulName: Her name is French for "stepmother". Literally, it translates to "beautiful mother". Both definitions describe her well.
* PosthumousCharacter: Mostly. Her spirit appears to help send Nami off from Cocoyashi Village without any regrets when she wants to become a pirate but still feels guilty about leaving her hometown behind for the long term, including the beloved memories of her adoptive mother. Belle-Mère encourages her to get going already by giving her a pat on the back, pushing Nami out the door with gusto.
* RedheadInGreen: A red head who wore a green, plaid t-shirt.
* RetiredBadass: Was in the Marines for a bit, but retired early to raise Nami and Nojiko.
* SmokingIsCool: She was a smoker, former Marine, and attempted to take on Arlong.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Bellemere? Belle-Mère? Bell-Mère?
* TakeMeInstead: Belle-Mère's current savings were enough to either save herself or her two girls from Arlong's crew. She chose to save her daughters instead of herself.
* {{Tsundere}}: Like mother, like adopted daughter.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Seemed to have this relationship with Genzo: she loved to tease him, he called her "little thug", but both of them cared for one another.
* WouldHurtAChild: Played for both [[PlayedForDrama drama]] and [[PlayedForLaughs laughs]], respectively.
** She gave Nami a ''hard'' slap after her daughter stated that she and Nojiko aren't sisters because they're not related by blood.
** In a flashback, she hit a boy after learning from Nami that he insulted her tangerines.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She had fuchsia hair.

[[folder:Dr. Hiriluk]]
!!Dr. Hiriluk
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Shigeru Ushiyama (JP), Frank Guida (EN, 4Kids), Mark Stoddard (EN, Funi), Jesús Cortez (Latin American Spanish)
!!!'''Age:''' 68
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 141 (Manga), Episode 85 (Anime)

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiluluk_anime.png]]

->''"When does a man die? When he is hit by a bullet? No. When he suffers a disease? No. When he ate a soup made out of a poisonous mushroom? No! A man dies when he is forgotten! Even if I die, my dream will come true. The people's hearts will be cured!"''

A quack doctor from Drum island and a former rogue. He became Chopper's mentor. His goal was to "heal" his country by attempting to cause a cherry tree blossom on his winter island. He has few days left, and Chopper attempts to cure him with a poisonous mushroom. He's tricked by [[FatBastard King Wapol]] into a trap, but he blows himself up after giving a last, touching speech that sparked an eventual revolution within the country. Later Kureha uses his invention, a red colored powder that turns the snow pink, like cherry petals to "heal" the island.
-----
* AndThatLittleGirlWasMe: He explains his doctoring philosophy to Chopper through a story about a life long thief who was diagnosed with an incurable terminal disease. While wandering one day he witnessed a cherry blossom bloom so beautiful to lifted his soul and seemingly cured his disease on the spot. So now Dr. Hiriluk seeks to do the same to his home country: healing its ills by raising their spirits. Of course, a later conversation with Dr. Kureha reveals the criminal was Dr. Hiriluk and it didn't really cure him, though it did seem to significantly cause it to go into remission for decades. It also explains why Hiriluk is somewhat inept at actual doctoring: he spent most of his life being a thief, not studying medicine.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: Or in this case, better to kill yourself with an explosive concoction than die from the poison mushroom you ate because your young friend went through hell to get it or from your tyrant of a king.
* BreakHisHeartToSaveHim: As Hiriluk's condition worsened, he cruelly chased Chopper out of his home. He even fired a gun at Chopper, something the reindeer feared at the time. This was all to spare Chopper from watching his surrogate father die of illness.
* ComicallyIneptHealing: Dr. Hiriluk is a well intentioned quack who tries to heal people with frog livers.
* CoolOldGuy: In spades. He was the one who started Chopper's medical training, and who instilled in him his generous and kind spirit.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: Undeniably. After giving one of the most heartwarming speeches of all times, he drank an explosive potion so that he won't die because of Chopper's poisonous Mushroom.
* FamousLastWords: "My life has been wonderful! Thank you, Chopper!"
* {{Foil}}: To Kureha. He's an idealistic quack, while she's a highly skilled cynic.
* FullFrontalAssault: Stripped himself of all his clothing in the freezing cold to show the injured Chopper that he had nothing to conceal, he only wanted to help.
* GoOutWithASmile: He was smiling when he died.
* HeroicSuicide: Essentially, this is what he did. After eating a poisoned amiudake mushroom, which hastens his demise, then falling into a trap after hearing that the 20 Doctors are ill, he drinks his failed potion to die on his terms. The explosion completely obliterated him, leaving nothing behind but [[DeadHatShot his hat]], which blew down to Chopper and allowed him to realize that Hiriluk just finished himself off.
* HighHopesZeroTalent: Despite his passion for medicine, his treatments generally do more harm than good.
* IRegretNothing: His final words were that he lived a wonderful life and thanked Chopper for such a life.
* ImprobableHairstyle: It's shaped like a medical cross.
* LuredIntoATrap: Shortly after eating Chopper's mushroom, he hears that the 20 Doctors are ill, and rushes to help. It's a lie to lure out the two rogue doctors, and Hiriluk ends up facing off against a squad of soldiers.
* MadScientist: A little, and good-natured.
* MadeOfExplodium: A lot of his concoctions tended to blow up. He also used bombs a lot as threats and diversions.
* NiceHat: He wore a pretty damn nice black hat to go along with his coat. He also owned another nice pink hat with a cross, which he later gave to Chopper.
* ParentalSubstitute: Acted as a father figure to Chopper.
* ReformedCriminal: He used to be a master thief until he got ill and was cured by viewing cherry blossoms.
* SignatureLaugh: Eh eh eh! Chopper would mimic his laugh back then.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Kureha. She regarded him as a quack, but she still took Chopper in and taught him everything she knew.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Suffered from a critical illness. Subverted in his backstory, where a supposedly fatal disease he was suffering from inexplicably was cured when he saw some cherry blossoms.

[[folder:Montblanc Noland]]
!!Montblanc Noland
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HochuOtsuka (JP), Daniel Penz (EN)
!!!'''Age:''' 39
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 286 (Manga), Episode 187 (Anime)

[[quoteright:320:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/montblanc_noland_anime.png]]

->''"This medicine is the result of collaboration of researchers around the world! Do you have an idea how many died to ensure its birth? Yet this great creation is being stepped on by your superstition! That is why I say your rituals are an insult to mankind"''

Montblanc Cricket's ancestor and an explorer who discovered the Shandian homeland and became friends with them. His history with the tribe has had a positive influence on their way of life. Sadly killed when he told his king about their civilization (mostly the city of gold). But when Noland went to show him in person, the island was blasted up to Skypiea by then. The king presumed he was lied to and had Noland executed, with Noland never knowing what happened to his native friends. To add insult to injury, the king fabricated a fairy tale about what a liar Noland was, making him look like a fool in the process. This would have great impact on Noland's entire family line.
-----
* AdaptationalWimp: In-universe. Norland was a tall, well-built GeniusBruiser. "Liar" Norland was a scrawny idiot with a goofy grin.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Captain of his ship, famous explorer, and singlehandedly killed a ''Sea King'' for food.
* BadassBookworm: Not only smart but hella strong. He beheaded a giant snake, for crying out loud.
* BadassNormal: He couldn't have stayed underwater for 30 minutes to find and kill a ''Sea King'' if he had a Devil Fruit, now could he?
* CassandraTruth: Played to absolute tearjerking levels - during life, people found his tales hard to believe, and for 400 years after his death, nobody has believed a thing he's ever said, even though most of his stories and explanations usually have factual basis or were genuine adventures he had.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He ''lifted a rockslide'' which was blocking his legs. ''With ONE HAND!''.
* CosmicPlaything: Noland's demise was simply because of the unfortunate timing of the Knock-Up Stream erupting for the first time and blasting all proof of Shandia into the sky, and a selfish, greedy king deciding to put him to death for wasting his time and money with tales of a vibrant kingdom of gold and voyaging out to an empty patch of sea and damning all memory of him to infamy.
* CulturedBadass: He's a traveled, experienced man with a fondness for scientific discoveries.
* DramaticIrony: The children's book that portrayed him as a foolish liar is actually full of lies.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: We first learn about him through a children's story, which paints him as a weak, foolish liar. When he appears in an actual flashback, the first thing he does is solve his ship's lack of food by killing a sea king.
* AFatherToHisMen: Tragically his real crew wasn't allowed in the Square where he was executed.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: He was a truly strong and courageous explorer who saved the Shandians from being wiped out by disease, as well as who knows how many other deeds. However, due to the City of Gold debacle, he's been painted as a fool and a liar throughout history, and has become the North Blue's analogue to the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
* HeterosexualLifePartner: After he and Kalgara stopped trying to kill each other, they were the best of friends.
* HonorBeforeReason: Chooses to leave the Shandian's treasures behind after they come to hate his crew. That left him with no proof that the Golden City existed.
* GeniusBruiser: Was an incredible explorer as well as a deadly fighter.
* GoOutWithASmile: Subverted. Cricket resentfully says that rather than grinning like an idiot as the picture book portrayed him, Noland went to his execution in tears.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: As if he wasn't badass enough.
* MadeOfIron: He has some incredible lungs, as he dived underwater in the Grand Line and stayed underwater for about half an hour before emerging... with a gutted giant monster to serve as dinner for the crew.
* NiceGuy: An amiable person who was kind to his crew, is willing to help the dwarves and becomes quick friends with the hot-tempered Kalgara.
* NiceHat: Wears a large chestnut on his head. His descendant Cricket does the same, so it's a family tradition.
* OddFriendship: Strikes one with Kalgara.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Kalgara's red; he's calmer and wiser while Kalgara is HotBlooded.
* TheScapegoat: He's blamed for all the casualties the king's fleet suffered on the journey ([[NeverMyFault with the king conveniently forgetting how he insisted that Noland use the king's men, rather than his own experienced crew]]), and executed for fooling the king.
%%* TragicBromance: With Kalgara.
* WhatTheHellHero: Delivers a beautiful speech to Kalgara about his "fear of the Gods".

A mighty Shandian warrior who Noland befriended. Ancestor of Wyper.
-----
* BadassNative: A legendary warrior of Shandian descent, who are known to be tough badasses.
* BattleCry: "Light the fire of Shandala!"
* BladeOnAStick: He wields a spear in battle.
* BoisterousBruiser: Talks loud and really enjoys fighting.
* BolivianArmyEnding: He fell in battle against the Birkans when their leader decided to claim their land for himself after it got blasted into the sky. The last we saw of him, he charged into battle with his tribe, some of whom were already badly wounded from the upheaval of their land.
%%* CharlesAtlasSuperpower
* CombatPragmatist: Subverts TalkingIsAFreeAction and shanks Noland as he's distracted.

* EpicFlail: Uses a really gargantuan one to smash a pirate ship in his DynamicEntry.
* FieryRedhead: Has a mane of wild red hair, matching his fiery spirit.
* HappilyMarried: To a Shandian named Herb. They had a daughter named Mousse.
* HeterosexualLifePartner: See Noland's entry.
* HonorBeforeReason: He's willing to have his daughter sacrificed to a giant snake in order to appease the gods.
* HotBlooded: In contrast to the calm Noland.
%%* LightningBruiser
* ManlyTears: As he greets Noland farewell and promise to always ring the bell to guide him.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After making friends with Noland, he suddenly turned hostile upon finding out that he and his crew cut the holy trees of his people. Then, just as Noland is leaving forever, he learned that those trees were dead and infected with a grave disease that would have destroyed the island. This is his reaction to the news, running towards the beach and mentally apologizing to Noland.

The head archeologist of Ohara, the home island of Nico Robin. He and his team were the closest thing to a real family Robin had on the island. However his team were studying The Blank Century, an act taboo by the World Government. The Marines managed to find out about this from the capture of Nico Olvia and track it back to Ohara. Olvia manages to get back to the island and warn Clover. But the [=CP9=] reaches them regardless and the scholars are rounded up. Clover speaks on their behalf, revealing they found out that there was once a kingdom before the WG. Before he can reveal anymore, he's shot point blank on the orders of the Five Elder Stars. Despite being mortally wounded, he manages to stay alive long enough to help his fellow scholars save as much information from the Tree of Knowledge as they can before burning to death with it.
-----
* CoolOldGuy: You gotta admit, standing up to the heads of the world despite the consequences takes balls.
* CoolTeacher: To Robin and possibility the closest thing to a ParentalSubstitute she had when her mother was away as he and the rest of the scholars were the only nice people on Ohara towards her.
* CruelToBeKind: His threat to ban Robin from the library was meant to prevent her from becoming a criminal like him and Olvia.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Robin knowing how to read the Poneglyphs, which made him regret not knowing and therefore not being able to do more for her.
* ForYourOwnGood: Had threaten to take away Robin's scholar license after she reveals she wants to study Poneglyphs with him and the others. Naturally this was to keep her from getting involved with the danger of the World Government. Sure enough, having the knowledge to read them had her being hunted down by the [=WG=] for most of her life.

* KilledMidSentence: Got shot by government agents as he was about to reveal the name of the lost kingdom. Subverted as it doesn't fully kill him and he manages to stay alive long enough to remove as many books as he can from the Tree of Knowledge with the others before dying in the fire.
* ParentalSubstitute: It's heavily implied that Clover was the closest person that Robin had to a positive father figure.
* PunnyName: His hair is in the shape of his namesake.

->''"The sea's a vast place, so I guarantee... someday you'll find friends who won't ever leave you! '''No matter who you are, ain't no one born into this world to be alone!'''"''

A giant who was a former Vice Admiral Marine who had ties with Robin. It was his unit that captured Olvia (Robin's mother) and her exploration team upon finding out they were studying The Blank Century. When it was ordered they be executed and their home island Ohara destroyed by Buster Call, Saul found the punishment to be way too extreme. He freed Olvia and defected from the Marines. Ironically winding up washed ashore on Ohara. There he befriended a young Robin as he built himself a raft to leave the island, but the Buster Call arrived before then. He tried to help Robin escape but was caught by Aokiji and frozen. His last words encouraged Robin that she had friends out on the ocean. It's noted he had the D in his name and smiled in death as most D's tend to do.
-----
* BadassBeard: Looks like a lion's mane.
* BadassBoast: "You wont get off easily, having made me your enemy!"
* BlackSheep: Despite being a Giant, he despises the [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy warriors of Elbaf]] and is much more calm and cool-headed. Oda explained that there are many other giant-inhabitated islands like Elbaf.
* DefectorFromDecadence: As the Buster Call ships came to Ohara, he stopped caring about his Marine affiliation and thrashed them to protect Robin.
* FieryRedhead: Has red hair and is a talkative and all-around jolly guy, especially for Robin.
* GentleGiant: Literally a giant and gentle enough to be a good friend for Robin.
* GoOutWithASmile: Just like the rest of the D carriers (and other badass characters), he died laughing, with a huge smile on his face.
* HumanPopsicle: Or Giant Popsicle in any event. How he met his end.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: ''Jaguar.'' In a twist, however, he's as much compassionate and kind as he's a fearsome giant.
* NiceHat: As a Marine, he had worn the Marine cap, but upon his defection he exchanged it for a cowboy's hat.
* OhCrap: Reacts with a huge shock to the news that the island he was landed on was indeed Ohara, about to be targeted by a Buster Call.
* OnlyFriend: Robin is practically friendless without him.
* OurGiantsAreBigger: He does seem slightly smaller than other Giants seen in the series, but he's also not from Elbaf, which could explain it.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Even as a Marine, he was against gratuitous violence against the enemies, as he scolded one of his men for shooting a cannonball at the archeologists' ship.
* SignatureLaugh: "Dereshishishishi!"
* WhatTheHellHero: He's clearly shocked by the Government's plan to obliterate Ohara, and chews out Aokiji when he witnesses the survivor's ship being blown up by Akainu.

However the team was captured by the Marines and commanded to be executed while the Buster Call was ordered on her island. Saul, disagreeing with such punishment, helped her escape. She made her way back to Ohara only minutes before the Buster Call came, unknowingly passing her daughter in the process. After warning her fellow scholars, she tried to stop Spandine from coming any further, but was easily subdued. During the round up of the scholars, she finally meets her daughter after so long. She initially denies claims to be her mother, but ultimately breaks down after Robin calls out to her. When the Buster Call commences, she orders Saul to take Robin off the island while she and the other scholars save what knowledge they can from the Tree of Knowledge, during which time it's presumed she had died in the fire with the others.
-----
* ActionMom: While Olvia doesn't engage into any fights on-screen, she did wield a pistol aimed at Spandine.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Like her daughter, her brown eyes in the manga turn blue in the anime.
* FamousLastWords: ''"Live, Robin!"''
* HotLibrarian: Like her daughter, she was a very beautiful young woman and a lover of history.
* MamaBear: Ordered Saul to help a young Robin escape from the burning island.
* MarriedToTheJob: She always put her job as an archaeologist and scholar first, to the point that she decided to stay in Ohara and die trying to save the books from Tree of Knowledge with the other scholars rather than leave with her daughter.
* MissingMom: Olvia deeply regrets leaving her daughter, Robin, at such a young age to study the Poneglyps and thought it would be best to keep her distance because of it.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: She and her daughter, Robin, as an adult are both voiced by Creator/YurikoYamaguchi and Creator/StephanieYoung in the Japanese and English versions. Fitting, since Robin is a GenerationXerox of Olvia, with the same profession and intelligence, and [[StrongFamilyResemblance looks just like her]] except for their hair colors (Olvia's is white, Robin's is black).
* SoProudOfYou: During their reunion, Robin was initially scared that her mother would be angry, but Olvia instead was amazed at how her daughter could do something at such a young age.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Really the only difference between her and her daughter is the color of their hair.

A mysterious young woman only seen in flashbacks. This is because she was Gold Roger's girlfriend/lover, as well as the mother of his child... Ace. She ultimately passed away -- but not before entrusting Vice-Admiral Garp with the task of taking care of her child, which he did by taking him in as his adoptive grandson. Her full name is Portgas D. Rouge, and she is the first known female carrier of the D initial.
-----
* DeathByChildbirth: She died giving birth to Ace. Justified due to the strain of prolonging her pregnancy.
* TheDeterminator: The only conceivable way she could've ''deliberately stayed pregnant for 20 months''.
* FlowerInHerHair: A red hibiscus flower to be exact.
* GoOutWithASmile: Dies smiling as she gives birth to Ace and entrusts him to Garp.
* LongestPregnancyEver: She was able to hold Ace in her womb for ''twenty months''.
* MamaBear: A pacifist example, but still. She held her son in her womb until she found a safe place to give birth to him.
* PluckyGirl: She wouldn't be able to hold Ace in her womb for that long if not for her pluck.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Ace takes a lot from his mom, and not just her name.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KoujiIshii (JP), Gabe Kunda (EN)
!!!'''Age:''' 48
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 521 (Manga), Episode 415 (Anime)

[[quoteright:305:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fisher_tiger_anime.png]]

->''"There are plenty of compassionate humans in this world! I know that! It's foolish to die and leave only hatred as a legacy! I know that! But my reason is overpowered by the demon in my heart! My very flesh refuses their blood! '''I cannot love humans... ever!!'''"''
-->--'''Fisher Tiger's dying words, Chapter 623'''

A legendary Fish-Man and leader of the Sun Pirates. He was known for climbing the Red Line with his bare hands, wreaking havoc on Marijoa and freeing thousands of slaves, both human and fish-man. He later took the fish-men with him and formed the Sun Pirates, a crew composed of former slaves and new fish-men alike. Along with Queen Otohime, he fought for stopping the racism between Fish-Men and humans with his own "methods," but bled to death because he refused a transfusion of human blood. He was also revealed to be a Tai Snapper (a.k.a. Red Sea Bream) fish-man.\\\

His first and only bounty was 230,000,000 berries. He still holds the record for the highest starting bounty revealed thus far.
-----
* AnimalMotifs: Given his name, the ''Tiger''.
* BadassBaritone: The anime gives him a voice even deeper than Jimbei's.
* BadassBeard: The guy razed a citadel by his lonesome and saved hundreds of slaves of all races, and has the badass facial hair to show for it.
* BadassInCharge: How else would you call a man able to climb a kilometric, smooth wall for days and still have enough strength back to raze a whole citadel all by himself? This pretty much helped him gain following that made up his Sun Pirates.
* ByronicHero: Like many fish-men, he's prejudiced towards humans, but he shows some belief that there are good humans out there, and the audience gets treated to his thoughts a number of times.
* CycleOfRevenge: Defied. He's well aware of this trope, and despite his personal hatred towards humans, he made sure to treat humans and fish-men the same (for example, freeing ''all'' slaves from Marijoa) so as not to continue it.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: During his adventures, Tiger was captured and enslaved by World Nobles at Marijoa. As a slave Tiger was abused, tortured and humiliated by his masters.
* DeathByIrony: A blood transfusion from a human could have saved him... but it was denied to him. Though it turns out, that's just the story his crew made up to keep his heroic image. He still qualifies though since, in truth, he hated humans too much to accept the one that was offered, even though he ''knew'' that there was no reason to.
* FantasticRacism: He despises humans like most of his kind. Although ''unlike'' many of the fish-man pirates who would follow him, he had a fairly nuanced view, and realized that the whole thing was ridiculous and that there ''were'' good humans out there like there were good fish-men. He'd just been mistreated too much for that understanding to ever reach his heart.
* TheFarmerAndTheViper: He met his demise by ending up on the bad side of the trope, when Koala's parents sold his location out in exchange for the Marines not kidnapping Koala again.
* FatalFlaw: His IrrationalHatred against humans ultimately leads to his death. What makes it tragic is that he ''knows'' this, and tried to overcome it... but in the end, he couldn't.
* TheFettered: Unlike his subordinate Arlong, he's careful not to allow his anger at humans to overcome him because he knows it would damage his cause.
* {{Foil}}: To Queen Otohime. Both were fish-men who wanted peace with humans, had a mutual respect for one another despite their difference in beliefs regarding humanity, and were assassinated. However, while AllLovingHero Otohime wanted co-existence with humans, ByronicHero Tiger thought it was best for humans and fish-men to remain separate.
* IconicOutfit: He wears a bandanna, a sleeveless vest, a captain's coat and black pants as the Sun Pirates' captain.
* IrrationalHatred: As noted in KnightTemplar below. Though, unlike most examples, he's well aware that it's irrational and doesn't want to pass it down to future generations.
* KnightTemplar:
** Unlike Queen Otohime, he believed that humans and fish-men cannot live together.
** On his deathbed he admitted that he knew good people do exist and that they are not so different from fish-men but he never could overcome his irrational hatred.
* LargeAndInCharge: He's even bigger than Arlong ''and'' Jimbei. AllThereInTheManual gives his height at 5.2 meters, making him taller than the likes of even Katakuri!
* MalcolmXerox: A rare Japanese example, as well as a rare three-dimensional example. He raises a pirate crew of former fish-man slaves and espouses their races' superiority in response to humans (and specifically the Celestial Dragon's) discrimination against them. Ultimately, he is killed because his hatred of humans runs so deep that he refuses to accept treatment for a mortal injury because the only blood available for a transfusion is human blood. To really drive the point home, he is contrasted with the queen of Fish-Man Island, Otohime. While Fisher Tiger believes that the differences between humans and fish-men are irreconcilable and they must live separately, Queen Otohime tried to encourage cooperation between the two races. Both ended up betrayed and killed for their trouble- ironically, Fisher Tiger was betrayed by humans, while Otohime was assassinated by a Fish-Man who wanted to stoke anti-human racism. Fittingly enough, Tiger's played by the African-American Gabe Kunda in the Funimation dub.
* MoralityChain: Was this to some members of the Sun pirates, especially Arlong.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "Tiger". And yup, he's a badass adventurer.
* NobleDemon: He [[FantasticRacism hated humans]], but during his rampage in Marijoa he still freed all the slaves, both humans and fish-men. He also refused to kill the humans that come after him, since he realizes that it would only prolong the cycle of hatred.
* OneManArmy: With his bare hands he scaled the multi-kilometre high sheer wall of the Red Line, and then singlehandedly laid waste to the holy city of Mary Geoise, freeing thousands of slaves. Keep in mind, simply ''walking in the path'' of a Celestial Dragon is already considered blasphemous, and this guy dared to directly attack all of them at once in their homeland.
* PunnyName: The Sea Bream is called "Tai" in Japanese.
* ScarsAreForever: {{Defied|Trope}}. Tiger rebrands all the slaves he set free with a new symbol, thus forming the Sun Pirates. He then also marked every other member of his crew with the exact same brand, making it impossible to tell which of his crewmen had once been slaves.
* SwordAndGun: In a flashback, he was shown holding a cutlass and a pistol (along with two other swords and a bazooka) during his assault on Marijoa.
* TigerVersusDragon:
** He's the "Tiger" who opposed the "Celestial Dragons".
** If you assume that Otohime is the "dragon" to Fisher Tiger's... "tiger". She's the queen of Ryuugu Kingdom, aka "Dragon Palace Kingdom", as it took inspiration from the tale of Urashima Taro. They did not oppose each other, however, and held a mutual respect even as they disagreed on foreign policy.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Enforced this policy on his crew toward humans; they would beat them up, steal food and supplies, and even sink their ships, but killing was a no-no. He believed that doing so would provoke humans to lash out at other innocent fish-men, who would then retaliate on innocent humans, perpetuating a CycleOfRevenge.
* TragicBigot: Suffered so much abuse at the hands of humans that even though he ''knew'' intellectually that he shouldn't hold them as a species responsible for his torment, he simply "[couldn't] love the humans anymore". This ultimately led to his death.
* WouldHurtAChild: A rare, sympathetic example. Fisher branded a young Koala with his crew's sun mark not out of malice but to shows that she wasn't a slave anymore.
* YourSizeMayVary: While portrayed as big, he certainly doesn't look like he's twice his crewmates' size.

->''"Their skin may be of a different colour... their bodies may differ from ours... but it is not enough to wait for the day when the humans come to understand us! We must take action ourselves, and strive to understand them!"''

A Goldfish Mermaid and the former queen of the Ryuguu Kingdom. Unlike Fisher, she wanted a peaceful co-existence with the humans. She was assassinated. Her subjects are still loyal to her and her beliefs however.
-----
* AnimalMotifs: Subtle, but she has a dragon motif.
* AllLovingHero:
** Somewhat {{exaggerated}}. She can make a violent thief forced into a criminal life by poverty to reconsider his choices by pleading with him, then crying profusely as she sympathizes with his pain, of course after she slaps him several times. She was also immensely influential and gave passionate speeches, as she was adored all over Fish-Man Island.
** Taken to the absolute extreme when she not only takes a bullet for a Celestial Dragon, but then leaves with him to the Holy Land and ''successfully negotiates with the other world nobles''. Wow.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: {{Subverted|Trope}}. Sure they hurt, and gave the recipient a lesson, but she severely harms herself in the process.
* BadassPacifist
** Willing to bear ''all'' the pain and sadness of her people so nobody else has to cry or bleed ever again.
** And it turns out she verbally beat the [[AGodAmI god complex]] out of one of the ''Celestial Dragons''. As in, she used nothing but words to convince him he was human like anyone else and not above everyone. If that isn't awesome, the word has no meaning.
* BreakTheCutie: You can't not feel sorry for her as the people who once supported her cause start giving up and withdrawing their signatures.
* TheEmpath: Her Observation Haki worked somewhat differently; she can use it to sense someone's feelings.
* TheExtremistWasRight: Of the Extreme Pacifism variety. She insisted on rescuing a stranded [[AristocratsAreEvil Celestial Dragon]], even protecting him from his former slaves exacting justified vengeance, to the point of TakingTheBullet for him. This would count as StupidGood if not for the fact that she managed to get the Celestial Dragons to support her petition, and it paid off even bigger when said Celestial Dragon actually pulled a HeelFaceTurn, and would go on to free his slaves, rescue her daughter from another Celestial Dragon's attempted kidnapping, and pledged his support for Fish-Man Island.
* {{Foil}}: To Fisher Tiger. Both were fish-men who wanted peace with humans, had a mutual respect for one another despite their difference in beliefs regarding humanity, and were assassinated. However, while ByronicHero Tiger thought it was best for humans and fish-men to remain separate, AllLovingHero Otohime wanted co-existence with humans.
* FriendToAllChildren: While she loved and was loved by most citizens in her kingdom, she especially seemed to care a lot about the children, spending a lot of time talking to them, benevolently disciplining them, and teaching them of the life on the surface, and insisting that they shouldn't grow up to hate humans like many of the adult fish-men and mermaids do. And as noted below, she was a very good mother to her own children.
* GoodParents: She is seen to be very close with all four of her children. Even when she was exhausted from her work and depressed when her people no longer supported her cause, it didn't stop her from putting on a smile for her kids and spending time with them.
* GoOutWithASmile: She smiled as Fukaboshi promises her that he and his brothers will take care of Shirahoshi and that they will make sure that the signatures from their people will be collected.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She had blonde hair and was an {{exaggerated|Trope}} AllLovingHero.
* TheHighQueen: Of Fish-Man Island.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Otohime had a normal-sized height compared to her ginormous husband.
* InVinoVeritas: When her people, even those who had previously supported her cause, started backing out in the wake of Fisher Tiger's death, she got completely smashed, then got on the radio and viciously called out her subjects for their cowardice while drunk.
* KiAttacks: She is the first known Mermaid to be a confirmed Haki user, capable of using [[SpiderSense Observation Haki or Mantra]].
* MayDecemberRomance: She was 24 years her husband Neptune's junior. Still, the two deeply loved each other.
* MissingMom: Shirahoshi's. The poor girl didn't even get to properly pay her respects to her until Luffy came along, because of Vander Decken.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed:
** The UsefulNotes/MartinLutherKingJr to Fisher's Malcolm X. Considering she was assassinated for her cause, in '''broad daylight''' via sniper gun shot, just as MLK was, also draws parallels.
** The New Fish-Men Pirates force the island's citizens to step on a Fumi-e with her image, a reference to how Christians in Japan were forced to step on an icon of Jesus or the Virgin Mary.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Stopped a thief by herself, even though her body is weak. She also got a peace treaty ''from the World Nobles''. Let that sink in for a second.
* SilkHidingSteel: Arguably the bravest and most heroic woman in the ''Manga/OnePiece'' universe; and she is not even a warrior at that.
* TakingTheBullet: For an assholish {{Jerkass}} World Noble to boot. It just made her more popular. This isn't how she died, however.
* TenderTears: Like her daughter, she cries at the drop of a hat; but only because her heart is so pure and kind.
* TigerVersusDragon: If you assume that Otohime is the "dragon" to Fisher Tiger's... "tiger". She's the queen of Ryuugu Kingdom, aka "Dragon Palace Kingdom", as it took inspiration from the tale of Urashima Taro.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: Neptune laments that someone as innocent as her would die while he, who has killed plenty of humans during his life, would come off as a hypocrite trying to sustain of dream of human/fish-man harmony.
* UglyGuyHotWife: While Neptune is pretty much a {{Gonk}}, she was a beautiful mermaid.
* WideEyedIdealist: More nuanced than the usual "Can't we all just get along" idealist. Her drunken rant revealed that part of her motivation to campaign was anger at the injustice of a world where opportunities for fish-men were forever out of reach for no other reason than because they were fish-men, and she both understood and accepted that some fish-men could never forgive and reconcile with humans, focusing instead on making sure they did not pass their hatred on to the younger generation.

!!Joy Boy
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 628 (Manga)

A man who lived in the Void Century and promised Poisedon and the people of Fish-Man Island he'd lift Noah into the surface but failed in his commitment for unknown reasons.

----
* TheBusCameBack: His name was first mentioned along with the promise he made to Fish-Man Island. He becomes prominent again during the Wano arc when it was revealed that he left behind the treasure on Laugh Tale (One Piece?) and the Rio Poneglyphs is basically the story he left behind.
* ConnectedAllAlong: Perhaps the ultimate example in One Piece. Joy Boy is connected to ''all'' the important MythArc and related characters in the series: the map to the final island Laugh Tale is his, the Rio Poneglyphs is his story and the One Piece may be the treasure he left behind.
* GreaterScopeParagon: He's been gone for close to a thousand years, but he's the one who put the mythical One Piece on Laugh Tale, the final island. On a lesser scale, there's a promise he made to Fish-Man Island which, while he failed to fulfill, continue to be held by the Fish-Men for someone else to complete. Finally, being someone from the Void Century who left the Poneglyphs, which the World Government has been censoring, puts him in direct opposition to their tyranny.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: He's only known as "Joy Boy". Interestingly enough, it is suggested in Oden's backstory that this is a title to be inherited.
* ThePromise: He failed to help the people of Fish-Man Island and left an apology message on a Poneglyph in the Sea Forest. They kept the Noah in working condition over the centuries until someone else can fulfill Joy Boy's will.
* ShroudedInMyth: We know next to nothing about Joy Boy, and yet it was ''him'' who left ''something'' on the final island that Roger eventually found.
* XMarksTheSpot: It is implied he wrote the four red Road Poneglyphs which show the coordinates of a specific island each. By drawing a X between those islands, the location of Laugh Tale is revealed.

Scarlett was former Crowned Princess of Dressrosa, Kyros's wife, Rebecca's mother, and Viola's older sister. She was killed when her daughter was only a child.
----
* BigSisterInstinct: When she was still under the belief that Kyros was a dangerous murderer, she warned him to stay away from Viola.
* BodyguardCrush: Kyros was assigned as her and Viola's bodyguard after his release from the colosseum. Scarlett was initially distrustful of him due to his criminal past, but that quickly changed when he saved her from pirates who had kidnapped her.
* DefrostingIceQueen: When they first met, Scarlett was skeptical over Kyros, seeing him only as a murderer. But, when he valiantly saved her from kidnappers, she changed her mind and eventually fell in love with him.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: In her husband's arms, in fact. However, since he had been turned into a toy by Sugar, she died without recognizing him. The poor man was devastated by this.
* EverybodyKnewAlready: Turns out, the adults of Dressrosa knew how Scarlett faked her death and have been living with Kyros ever since.
* FakingTheDead: She faked death by illness so that she could marry Kyros, though her family was in on the charade. And as later revealed, it didn't take long for the citizens to catch on to the truth either, though they kept their mouths shut out of respect.
* HappilyMarried: She had a mutual loving marriage with Kyros while she was alive.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Tiny Girl (petite, slender woman) to Kyros' Huge Guy (a muscular {{Hunk}}).
* TheLostLenore: To Kyros, as he still loves and mourns her in the present dearly.
* MamaBear: Scarlett did everything in her power to protect her daughter from the violence in Dressrosa.
* MeaningfulName: "Scarlett" can be another term for red. And she had reddish-pink hair.
* MissingMom: To Rebecca, as she was murdered when her daughter was a child.
* NiceGirl: She was known as a caring, sweet person by her subjects and close loved ones.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted; she shares her name with the gorilla from Shiki's pirate crew (albeit the gorilla's name is spelled "Scarlet", with one "t").
* RescueRomance: Scarlett began to see Kyros in a new (and romantic) light after he saved her.
* SecretRelationship: She and Kyros [[FakingTheDead faked her death]] and married in secret due to the scandal that would be created of them being together. It didn't technically stay secret for long, since the citizens soon found out about the truth anyway, but they decided to pretend they didn't know out of respect.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/corazon_anime.png]]

Corazon, whose real name is Donquixote Rocinante, is Donquixote Doflamingo's younger brother, who Trafalgar Law holds a deep respect for. He died 13 years prior to the Dressrosa arc, and for that Law decided to take revenge on Doflamingo. He ate the Calm-Calm Fruit (''Nagi Nagi no Mi'' -- "Nagi" means "silence"), which gives him abilities related to soundproofing.
-----
* AlmightyJanitor: Played with. He has the relatively low rank of Commander of the Marines, although this is due to his long-term mission to infiltrate and stop the Donquixote Pirates, and rose above its ranks to the point he became Doffy's right-hand man during the time spent there. Sengoku apparently found him to be very reliable, and he was at this mission for ''years'' before the pirate crew suspected a thing.
* AlmostDeadGuy: He stayed alive (See {{Determinator}} below) just long enough so Law could escape aided by his devil fruit power.
* AttackHello: He threw Law out a window upon meeting him. In a disguised attempt to get him to leave the crew.
* BadassAndChildDuo: He was this with Law. At first he took Law away from his brother learning Law wasn't safe knowing he was a D. Then spent 6 months looking for a cure to his disease, and when that became hopeless he pulled off stealing the Op Op Fruit so Law could live and made sure he escaped from Doflamingo before dying.
* BadassBaritone: He's given a deep, surprisingly smooth voice when he debuts in the anime. Still doesn't help with the inherent clumsiness, though.
* BadassLongcoat: Wore an apparently darker version of his brother's iconic feather coat. May or may not be this way due to him frequently burning it with cigarettes by accident.
* {{Bathos}}: He [[GoOutWithASmile goes out with a smile]] so that Law may remember him that way, but the smile is such a combination of goofy and NightmareFace that it horrifies Law, then leaves Law laughing afterwards. Law understood and appreciated the reason behind Corazon's smile, though.
* BatmanGambit: By deceiving Doflamingo into believing Law had escaped, he knew Doflamingo would disable the Bird Cage, so Law could actually escape hidden in the treasure which the Donquixote Pirates would carry away.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: When he was younger, he was a very adorable-looking kid with BlindingBangs, who possessed none of the asshole traits of his fellow World Nobles. As an adult, he's not so hard on the eyes, but he had been opposing his brother Doffy on the belief that he was born evil, appeared and behaved threatening to kids so they won't join the Donquixote Pirates, and is the main reason why Law, who was then dying of Amber Lead poisoning, is still living.
* BlindingBangs: Had them when he was a kid, and adorably so.
* BreakoutCharacter: Thanks to his tragic and fascinating character arc, Rocinante became a major fan favorite, which shows in him appearing in the Top 20 of the 20th anniversary poll and regular appearances in merchandise, far, far more than other {{Posthumous Character}}s. Not bad for a guy with only about ten chapters of screentime.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He was an enormous klutz but still a capable officer in the Donquixote Pirates according to Diamante.
* ButtMonkey: All sorts of misfortune seem to happen to this guy, from losing the capability of speech thanks to mental trauma to falling into pranks pulled by kids to '''setting himself on fire by accident'''. During the flashback of Law growing up during his time with the Donquixote Family, Corazon's ''always'' shown being a dope. He's just about the ''last'' person you'd expect to be Law's idol. Subverted, when it turns out he was faking being mute. The clumsiness is real though, despite his claims to the contrary.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Doflamingo's Cain. He even says that Doflamingo was born evil, and that he exists to keep him in check. However, he's the first of the Donquixote brothers to betray the other. In the end, even after Doflamingo discovered his betrayal and made it clear he was going to execute him, Rocinante pointed his Marine-issue gun back at Doflamingo, but could never bring it in himself to shoot his elder brother, no matter how horrible he was.
* ChildHater: He's stated to be this when he's introduced in Law's flashback and [[WouldHurtAChild he shows it]]. It turns out he deliberately invokes this image to drive children away from Doflamingo's gang.
* CoDragons: He used to be this with Pica, Diamante, and Trebol for Doflamingo. As Corazon, he was more special than the other three.
* ComfortingComforter: Corazon puts a blanket over Law as he sleeps while he himself considers the compassion and sympathy that's driven him to go so far to help Law, who he barely knows.
* ConsummateLiar:
** It is revealed that he was a Marine assigned to infiltrate the Donquixote Family. He lied a lot to his crewmates in general and his brother in particular, who saw him as a sworn member of the family, and even hid his Devil Fruit power that aided him in doing it. His last moments were him deceiving the Family into believing Law escaped from them.
** He continued lying to Law about his relationship with the Marines up until his life was nearing its end. Only because he didn't want Law to hate him for being involved with the same Government that killed his country.
* CoveredWithScars: Due to being clumsy, but some of them might be battle scars. Others may be leftovers from his childhood.
* ChekhovsGunman: He originally appeared on the Chapter 691 color spread, the one that features multiple Marines and ''One Piece Film Z''. He's the one that's covered by Nami's Clima-Tact in the lower section between Nami and Zoro.
* CruelToBeKind: Corazon beats up children to scare them away from being pirates.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: First he was persecuted for being a former World Noble, then his mother died from illness from their extremely poor living conditions (which his older brother Doffy blamed his father for), and then a mob caught up to him and his remaining family and tortured all three at the stake. After ''that'', Doffy murdered their father despite Roci's pleas in a failed bid to get himself reaccepted by the other World Nobles, who looked down on his family for deciding to live with "commoners". It seems that the only decent event in his past was his apparent adoption by Sengoku.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Wears a black coat of feathers to contrast to his brother's pink coat, but he's the good one.
* DeathbedConfession: Laying beaten by the Donquixote family, he admits himself as a Marine and apologizes that he lied about it because he didn't want to be hated. The confession is actually for Law (who's inside the chest that Roci was leaning on) who despised anyone associated with the World Government.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Already on death's door and before the wrath of Doflamingo, he declares himself a Marine, boasts that he made Law eat the Op-Op Fruit, ruining Doflamingo's deal, and claims that Law is beyond his reach (which was a lie to goad him into fighting the Marines while Law escapes under his nose). And if that's not enough, [[DyingMomentOfAwesome he clings onto his life for as long as he could to help Law escape him]].
* DefusingTheTykeBomb: Corazon understood and showed compassion towards Law's tragedy, which turned Law away from Doflamingo's evil because he looked up towards Corazon instead, the hero who saved him from his Amber Lead disease.
* {{Determinator}}: He did absolutely everything he could to save Law from Doflamingo. To the point he held on to his life after having been shot multiple times by pirates, beaten horribly by Vergo, beaten again by the Donquixote Family and shot fatally by Doflamingo, just so Law could escape safely aided by his Silent Devil Fruit power.
* DisproportionateRetribution: It's his way of treating kids. And yes, it DOES bite him in the ass because young Law is unstable enough to try and kill him for it. He's still fine afterwards, though. Turned on its head later on though when it turns out he was trying to discourage kids from becoming pirates.
* DoomedMoralVictor: His life's goal was to keep his brother's madness in check, but when he met Law, he only felt compassion for someone so tragic. Not only did he save Law from his illness, he kept Law from becoming just like his evil brother Doflamingo, with his last breath claiming Law was free from him. While he wasn't able to stop his brother's evil deeds, he inspired Law to take up his goal in his stead, culminating in the Dressrosa arc thirteen years later and the end of Doflamingo's reign of terror.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: He was actually working undercover for the Marines, and keeping tabs on the Donquixote Pirates.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: He uses his Devil Fruit to silence Law, then lies to Doflamingo's face that he escaped, ''while leaning against the chest he locked Law into''. After Doflamingo fatally shoots him, Corazon keeps himself alive through sheer willpower as long as possible, so that Law wouldn't be able to make noise and alert the Donquixote family to his presence as they carried him to safety.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When he first appears in Law's flashback, he trips upon on his own coat and then he smacks a young Baby 5 and Buffalo for laughing at him. And of course, tossing a young Law out of a window, nearly killing him. Subverted in that he deliberately tried to make a wrong first impression; he's actually a kind and compassionate man.
* FacingTheBulletsOneLiner:
-->'''Corazon''': Just leave [Law] alone already! He is free!
* FamousLastWords: "Go, Law... you are... free now."
* FightsLikeANormal: His powers are only used to disorient/confuse his opponents; he still fights like any normal human being.
* FinalSpeech: Delivered one to his brother to drive home that Law had earned his freedom from the evil mad pirate.
* FindTheCure: He spent about six months trying to do this for Law. The search ended when his brother found the Op Op Fruit, which at the time was on the hands of a random pirate crew; he managed to steal it from them.
* {{Foil}}:
** Towards Vergo. Both of them held the title of "Corazon", the position of Doflamingo's most valued crew member. Rocinante is a Marine infiltrating the Donquixote Family. Vergo is a pirate under Doflamingo infiltrating the Marines. Surprisingly they meet, both of them discovering the truth of each other with Vergo reacting with violence and feelings of betrayal.
** Towards his own brother. Doflamingo believes [[MiseryBuildsCharacter all the suffering he's experienced]] entitles him towards causing destruction, but Corazon (with shared experiences) grew up to become a Marine following Moral Justice with the goal of stopping his brother's evil. Doflamingo sought to mold Trafalgar Law because of the boy's tragedy into his right hand man willing to be a self sacrifice, but Cora felt empathy for Law and wanted him to live his life free.
** The overall relationship between Rocinante, Doflamingo, and Law serves as a dark mirror to Luffy's relationship with his own adoptive brothers. Both groups came from highly prominent lineages (The Will of D, World Nobles). While Luffy had two supportive brothers who were protective of of him and each other, Law had two diametrically opposed older brother figures. While Sabo and Luffy felt immense guilt for the death of the their brother, the relationship between Law and his mentor figures all had a desire to kill the other at some point.
* ForceFeeding: Upon stealing the Op-Op Fruit, he had Law gulp it down against his will, despite Law admitting he wasn't prepared to become a Devil Fruit user. This saved his life of course.
* ForegoneConclusion: The big [[TheReveal reveal]] of his in Law's past was that his ultimate goal was to end his evil older brother's madness. We find this out fifteen chapters ''after'' we find out that Doflamingo [[CainAndAbel killed him]]...
* GlasgowGrin: He apparently sported one. It's actually makeup.
* GoOutWithASmile: With everything that Corazon has gone through to make Law live, and the subsequent outing of his spy status, he intended to die with a smile on his face, so that [[TearJerker Law would remember him this way]]. What a guy. After getting shot by his brother, holding out so Law can escape with his silent powers, Cora finally dies while smiling, thinking Law is free.
* GuileHero: He is extremely skilled in the art of deceit, being a marine mole assigned to infiltrate the Donquixote family. His silencing powers helped with that, too. He saves Law's life by deceiving Doflamingo into believing Law had escaped his grasp much sooner than he actually did.
* HeroicSacrifice: Inside Birdcage, he made up his mind the only way to get Law out would be to fool his brother into believing Law already escaped, and after declaring Law was free from his grasp he was killed by Doflamingo.
* HeroicSecondWind: Played with from different angles of the trope. As he lies beaten by the Donquixote family and approached by Doflamingo, he remembers meeting his adoptive father Sengoku. He then recites his position as a marine, along with an apology towards Law, as he puts forth his effort to deceive Doflamingo into believing Law has escaped. As he stands up to declare Law's freedom he is shot multiple times by Doflamingo.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: A former Celestial Dragon with a tragic backstory who became an undercover Marine agent under Fleet Admiral Sengoku who not only infiltrated Doflamingo's organization, but ended up saving Law's life and becoming his most cherished person as well? Yeah, we might've only seen brief glimpses of his life, but from what we've seen, we know that he's got one ''hell'' of a rich history.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: The first sign that he's more than he seems was when he covered for Law after the boy stabbed him, a transgression that might result in Law being killed by Doflamingo. Upon learning Law's full name he immediately warned the boy to stay away from Doflamingo; here it also reveals that his ChildHater thing was an act to keep kids away from his brother. And then he desperately tried to find a doctor willing to treat Law's Amber Lead Syndrome, even putting his Marine mission on hold, and became increasingly furious at the so-called doctors refusing to treat Law out of baseless fear. To top this off, there's the whole business of saving Law's life that made Law feel indebted to him so much that he still seeks revenge for his death 13 years later.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Throughout their journey to search for a cure for Law's disease, he drags Law to several unkind and unprofessional doctors who do nothing but cruelly remind and reinforce Law's tragedy. Corazon actually realizes that what he's doing is wrong but he can't help but sympathize with Law's plight.
* InSeriesNickname: "Cora-san" as an adult and "Roci" as a child.
* InTheHood: He wore a type of hat which gave off this appearance.
* TheKlutz:
** He was extremely clumsy to the point of [[SlapStick setting himself on fire]] when trying to light a cigarette and would also trip very often. On one occasion he tripped while setting himself on fire.
** Deconstructed once: Right after he stole the Op Op Fruit from a group of pirates, he slipped and fell down a hill, exposing himself to the enemies. [[RealityEnsues He ended up riddled with bullets for it]].
* LaserGuidedKarma: He inflicted this on several doctors when they refused to treat Law, who was at the time dying from Amber Lead poisoning. Because of the incorrect belief that Amber Lead poisoning was contagious, the doctors didn't want to touch Law, no matter how well-financed their hospitals or how good their medicine were. And every time they refused, [[PapaWolf Rocinante]] would destroy their hospitals in extreme rage - since the doctors refused to treat a sick, dying kid, they didn't deserve to continue practicing medicine. Fortunately, he found the Op-Op Fruit among some pirates (though he didn't get it unscathed).
* LegacyCharacter: He's the second person in Doflamingo's crew to hold the position and name of "Corazon." The first was Vergo, and the third was intended by Doflamingo to be Law.
* LikeFatherLikeSon:
** It's hinted Corazon took it upon himself to look after Law the same way Sengoku took him in after his father was murdered and he was left a crying orphan. Corazon genuinely understood what it was like for Law to lose his parents and carry on hurting so badly.
** Also with his biological father as well. Both are very kind-hearted, loving people but also dim-witted and naiive. Much like how his father underestimated how much people hated the Tenryuubito, Corazon also underestimated how much people would be afraid of Law's "contagious" Amber Lead disease until he saw it firsthand. Also, how both end up being killed by Doflamingo.
* MadeOfIron: He survived getting stabbed by Law. Near the heart, at that. It took quite a lot to actually kill him - see RasputinianDeath below. It also foreshadows how resilient Doflamingo would be.
* MakeSomeNoise: The Calm-Calm Fruit lets him silence sounds and voices. He can either project a field where no sound gets in or out, or makes anything he touches into producing no sound/voice, including a bazooka and its projectile's explosion.
* MeaningfulName: Rocinante was the name of Don Quixote's horse in the original novel. Much like said horse, Corazon was very clumsy.
* TheMole: While it's clear that he was not wholly loyal to his brother, given all of the secrets he hid from him, it's still shocking to learn that he was actually a ''Marine Commander'' who reported directly to Sengoku.
* MoralityChain:
** Subverted with Doflamingo, as the man was too self-centered to let the love of his family get in the way of his ambitions ''and'' the only person [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas he truly loved]] was his and Rocinante's MissingMom.
** Played straight with Law, as the only reason why Law isn't like Doflamingo is due to his UndyingLoyalty to Corazon and his desire to fulfill his wishes.
* MoralityPet: Implied as such to Law, even after his death. Law considered him to be the person dearest to him in his heart, and more or less admits that the reason why he has compassion and empathy despite his infamous cruelty is because of Corazon's influence. Subverted with Doflamingo; in spite of the fact that his brother genuinely cared for him, that didn't stop Doflamingo from murdering him, no matter how much it caused him despair to do so.
* MultipleGunshotDeath: Doflamingo shoots him multiple times after growing infuriated at the taunts over losing his grip over Law. This was ''after'' he was riddled with bullets from Diez Barrels' pirate group.
* MultitaskedConversation: When he revealed himself as a Marine agent to Doflamingo, he said "Sorry for lying... I didn't want you to hate me, ya see..." Out of context, it seemed like it was aimed at Doffy, but this was done after he knocked his head on the chest with Law inside, whom Corazon had lied to many times about not being a Marine.
* MundaneUtility: His Devil Fruit ability is excellent for stealth purposes and his role as TheMole, but it also helps him sleep better, as it blocks out noises that could disturb him.
* NiceGuy: He was genuinely broken-hearted to hear Law's tragic story and not only felt no ill will after being stabbed by him, but also traveled for six months to find the boy a cure for his deadly disease. He also saw his older brother as a horrible monster and sought to take him down. Even pointing a gun at Doflamingo, he was unable to pull the trigger because he was too kind hearted.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: After his secret of working with the Marines is known to Vergo, he gets beaten to within an inch of his life. This is done in ''front of a dying and crying Law who's begging for the beating to stop''. To add salt to the wound, Corazon was already riddled with bullets in his effort to get the Op Op Fruit for Law and Vergo shows no mercy, being in his fully induced muscled Haki form.
* NotSoDifferent: Just like Doflamingo, he's incredibly deceitful having been the [[TheMole]] in the Donquixote Pirates. He also continued to lie to Law about being a marine, but only because he didn't want to be hated by the young boy.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: In spite of his scatterbrained and clumsy actions most of the time, he's able to fool everyone about his mutism, as well as his double allegiance to the Marines, for years. His clumsiness is real, though.
* OhCrap: His reaction to seeing Vergo.
* OneLastSmoke: Lights one up after taking a full beat down from the Doflamingo Family and his brother shows up to have their last talk.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: His full name is actually Donquixote Rocinante. However, he is primarily referred to as "Corazon". Law might have never known his real name until he met Sengoku.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: When he finds out Law's a D, he ''talks to him'', and tells him he should leave, as he isn't the type of person who should hang around Doflamingo. Law is utterly shocked by the fact that he can talk, and that he's being so serious. Somewhat inverted in that the event brought his "true" character rather than making him go out of it.
* PapaWolf: He certainly was one towards Trafalgar Law, spending six months tirelessly searching for a doctor who could treat Law. And whenever someone would make Law cry in front of him, he smacked doctors and soldiers alike, threatening them with death and even ''burning down hospitals'' in order to punish the doctors that refused to treat Law's illness. Corazon ultimately betrays the Donquixote Family and abandons his duty as a ReverseMole for the Marines in favor of searching for a cure for Law's Amber Lead syndrome. That's right, he chooses Law, a child he himself acknowledges that he barely knows, above his sworn duty, flushing ''years'' of undercover Naval work down the toilet, just to give Law a chance at life.
* ParentalSubstitute: He became this for Law.
* PeacefulInDeath: He died with a peaceful smile, as shown on the photo sent to Sengoku. Impressive considering [[RasputinianDeath all it took to get him there]].
* PlatonicDeclarationOfLove: His final words for Law, leaving behind the smile that Law remembers him for.
* PlayingCardMotifs: His name means "Heart" in Spanish and his design has several heart motifs. He was also the previous heart seat holder of Doflamingo's crew and the original person intended to eat the heart-shaped Op-Op Fruit, so he can sacrifice himself for Doffy and grant his older brother eternal youth.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: His death is a major part of the arc and the ultimate driving force behind the Pirate Alliance Saga. Had he never died, Law probably would have never been a pirate, let alone one as infamous as he is now, or plotting revenge, or one of Luffy's allies.
* QuieterThanSilence: His Devil Fruit ability is this, as it can effectively silence any and every sound Corazon doesn't want others to hear, like his voice, or any weapons he might use like a bazooka (and its explosion). He can even [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking silence his own farts]]. Whenever he uses his silent powers, the UnsoundEffect of "Shi~n" appears. He's essentially [[StealthPun silent but deadly]].
* RasputinianDeath: Shot dozens of times by Diez Barrel's crew, then beaten to a pulp first by a Haki-enhanced Vergo and then by the entire Donquixote Family, ''then'' coup-de-graced by Doflamingo himself. And he still manages to cling onto life for a while after that.
* RunningGag: Being TheKlutz: trying to light a smoke he usually sets himself on fire and he usually falls flat on his back legs up.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: As a Marine, he directly disobeyed the orders of an Admiral, also his adoptive father, and interfered in a secret devil fruit trade so he could steal the Op-Op Fruit which would save Law's life. Sengoku was utterly shocked by this claiming Rocinante had never gone against his word, and that such an action meant Rocinante truly cared for Law.
* SelfSacrificeScheme: Upon witnessing Doflamingo's Bird Cage, the only way to get Law out would be to fool his brother into believing Law had already escaped, all the while knowing full well his brother would murder him for being a marine spy. From that moment on, he kept smiling so Law would remember him that way.
* SiblingYinYang: The compassionate, goofy, quiet, and kind-hearted sibling to Doflamingo's cold, charismatic, talkative, and hateful sibling. Although he hides it for the sake of his mission. Also, they ''do'' share a few character traits; their affinity for sudden outbursts of violence and deceiving others, for example.
* SinisterShades: Like his older brother. He breaks out of the shades when he stops being sinister, however.
* SmokingIsCool: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] -- he lights up and manages to [[RevealShot look cool for a single panel]]... then he accidentally sets himself on fire.
* SnowMeansDeath: He died on a snowy island after being shot by Doflamingo.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Doffy wanted to become immortal using the Op-Op Fruit, which gave someone eternal youth [[HeroicSacrifice at the cost of the current user's life]]. At first he wanted his brother to eat it, but Rocinante force-fed it to the then-young Law so he can be cured of his Amber Lead poisoning. Doffy was furious, but by the time he decided to "train" Law into giving his life, the latter was already on his way planning to get revenge for Rocinante's death.
* TheSpeechless: A traumatic experience in his past caused him to become mute, or at least, that's the front he puts up. He's actually an ElectiveMute.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Initial translations used Ro''c''inante, as the name is spelled in Literature/DonQuixote. However, in Chapter 764, it is instead spelled Rosinante (which is the phonetic spelling in some languages, not in the original european spanish which is pronounced Ro''th''inante). Do note that Donquixote is also spelled "Donqui'''j'''ote" in the same panel, so it's more likely that it's an alias.
* StealthExpert: Due to his silencing powers, he's able to do soundless infiltrations.
* TearsOfJoy: Once he managed to steal the Op-Op Fruit from pirates, he shed tears at the thought of finally being able to save Law's life.
* TearsOfRemorse: After months of being unable to find a cure for Law, he pondered the thought he was causing Law to relive his tragedy and began sobbing uncontrollably because he couldn't help the boy's pain. Having overheard this, Law began to look up towards Corazon.
* WallSlump: Slumped down against the treasure chest Law was hidden in right before he died. Actually rather significant, as he slumped on the chest on purpose to help keep Law concealed from Doflamingo and to secretly talk to Law.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: Rocinante has the power to mute all sound, which on the surface doesn't sound really badass. Lampshaded by Law, who seems to think his power to nullify sound is useless, saying "You can't do shit with that power!" Of course, this is ''One Piece'' where [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower even the mostly supposedly useless power can be a force to be reckoned with]] and, sure enough, Corazon demonstrates that silence ''is'' golden. After all, how else would he have completely deceived Doflamingo with a silence charade for 4 years? His power allowed him to easily break-in a mansion and ambush a pirate crew. If not for his clumsiness, he would've left with a valuable treasure of theirs scot-free, with the crew none the wiser.
* WideEyedIdealist: Apparently a trait he inherited from his father. While searching for a cure for Law's disease, every time he encounters what could possibly be a solution, he gets overly optimistic, believing in the utmost professionalism and kindness of the doctors they visited. Unfortunately, [[RealityEnsues reality repeatedly showed]] that his over-enthusiastic faith was deeply misplaced, like, for instance, believing that a large expensive hospital means that its doctors are extremely kind and professional. Because of the misunderstood belief that Amber Lead poisoning was contagious, doctors refused to treat Law. Rosinante was ''pissed''.
* WouldHurtAChild:
** He apparently had no qualms against hurting children such as [[DestinationDefenestration throwing them out of windows.]] Note that he did this to Law, who did absolutely nothing to warrant it -- he hadn't even ''met'' Corazon until that moment. Though Baby 5 and Buffalo more or less deserved it.
** Later {{Subverted|Trope}} - he's actually TheMole for the Marines, and his reason for doing that was to discourage kids from joining Doflamingo's crew (though obviously it didn't work for the young Baby 5, Buffalo, and Law). He's actually quite compassionate towards kids.
* YouCanTalk:
** After Law reveals his total full name - and the fact that he is a D - Corazon drags him off... And tells him he isn't the type of person who should hang around Doflamingo if he really what he claims to be. Law is ''utterly shocked'' that Corazon is talking and being serious at the same time.
** This royally screws him over when in a moment of panic, he blurts out Vergo's name. He ends up getting the crap beaten out of him.
* YouMonster: He does a subtler variant of this; he told Law that Doflamingo "isn't human" (even stating that Doffy was ''born'' evil) while recalling a memory from their terrible childhood. Doffy, his father, and Corazon (then going by his real name Rocinante) were being tortured at the stake by an angry mob of commoners just because they used to be World Nobles. Roci was screaming about the pain and wishing he could die, while his father was begging the mob to leave his children alone and to take out their hatred on him. Doflamingo, however, shouted out to the mob that no matter what they did to him, he would survive, and that when he got down, ''he would kill them all, one by one''. Even the mob was stunned.
* YouWouldntShootMe: He was unable to shoot his brother during their final confrontation. Doflamingo believed he was too much like their father and Law knew he was too kind-hearted to pull the trigger.

A noble who treats commoners much better than the rest of the nobles. He and his family stepped down from their positions.
----
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Not exactly physical beauty, but he and his wife have rather gentle countenances in contrast to the Celestial Dragon's default smug expression. They're also the nicest Celestial Dragons depicted so far, with Homing even proclaiming that he is a mere human and giving up his status to live a humble life. Unfortunately, his humility was marred with naivete and ignorance on how much the common people ''despise'' the Celestial Dragons. His wife was poised enough to apologize to her children for not being in good health, despite the horrible conditions they were forced into.
* DecapitationPresentation: Doflamingo [[{{Patricide}} shot him the the back of the skull]] and took what remained of his head to Marijoa in a futile attempt to regain his status among the World Nobles.
* TokenGoodTeammate: He and his wife believe they are equal as commoners. Their belief bit them in the ass, sadly, when people still target them for the things their peers did.
* WhiteSheep: Is the nicest Celestial Dragon depicted so far, even going so far as declaring himself as human and forgoing his status as a World Noble to live the life of a simple commoner with his family. How the hell he spawned [[TheSociopath Donquixote]] [[{{Jerkass}} Doflamingo]] is beyond comprehension. Even Doflamingo's own brother can't believe that their kind parents spawned someone like him, as Doflamingo is downright despicable, even by World Noble standards.

!!Four Emperors Saga

[[folder:Vinsmoke Sora]]
!!Vinsmoke Sora
!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/YurikoYamamoto
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 841 (Manga), Episode 804 (Anime)

[[quoteright:95:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vinsmoke_sora_anime.png]]
[[caption-width-right:95:[[labelnote:Click here to see Sora healthy and expectant.]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pregnant_sora.png[[/labelnote]]]]

Vinsmoke Judge's wife and the mother of their five children, Reiju, Ichiji, Niji, Sanji and Yonji. After the birth of their daughter, Judge got the idea to start genetically tampering with their next batch of offspring. She was firmly against her husband's plans to turn her unborn quadruplet sons into superhuman, emotionless war machines, but was still forced to undergo surgery against her will. To counter the modifications of her children, she took a drug whose aftereffects eventually led to her death. The only child that was affected by said drug was Sanji, who did not develop superhuman abilities and retained his empathy.
----
* AdultFear: She had the sheer misfortune of marrying a hard-hearted king who also happened to be a BloodKnight and an EvilutionaryBiologist. When Judge decided to weaponize her then-unborn quadruplet sons, she went to extreme lengths to protect them by eating a gene surgery-reversing drug, but only managed to save Sanji and died for her troubles. Her other sons, Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji only have but a tiny shred of humanity left. And she never lived long enough to see what happened to family members who possessed kindness in a kingdom who believed VirtueIsWeakness and MightMakesRight, as shown with Sanji's horrific childhood and Reiju's StepfordSmiler mask.
* AristocratsAreEvil: ''Averted''. Despite being the queen of the Germa Kingdom, Sora was beautiful and kind, much unlike her warmongering husband, Judge. Two of her children, Sanji and Reiju, followed her example, [[AbusiveParents to both]] [[BigBrotherBully their detriment]]; the only reason why her other sons didn't was because they were psychologically altered to literally never feel empathy, and only have a tiny shred of humanity left.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Sora was an exceptionally beautiful queen whose beauty was inherited by all her children, but her great kindness was inherited by Sanji and Reiju. When Judge experimented on her quadruplet sons so he can turn his children into weapons of war, ''while she was still pregnant'', [[MamaBear she ate a gene surgery-reversing drug in hopes of preserving their humanity and protecting them from their father]]; only Sanji came out okay, but his brothers Ichiji, Yonji, and Niji were not as fortunate. What little humanity they had left from their father's experiments remained.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: She never wanted her children to become inhuman {{Super Soldier}}s and in the few flashbacks she is seen, she is shown to be very kind and in turn loved by Reiju and Sanji, who both visited her when they were able. Her kindness and willingness to eat Sanji's [[LethalChef atrocious food]], even praising him for how good it tasted in spite of its horrible quality, was what eventually inspired him to become a chef. [[SupremeChef The rest was history]].
* DiseaseBleach: A variant. After she drank a toxic drug, her skin turned very pale and stayed that way as her complexion drained, showing the life ebbing out of her. Her hair is also less bright and sickly-looking.
* GoodParents: To Sanji and Reiju when she was alive. She also loved her other sons Ichiji, Yonji, and Niji enough to pull a MamaBear when Judge experimented on them in utero, by taking a dangerous drug that reversed gene enhancements so she can preserve their humanity, though she only managed to save Sanji and ended up dying for her troubles.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: A beautiful and compassionate queen with shining golden locks. Sanji, her only child who was affected by the drug she took to reverse her then-unborn quadruplet sons' enhancements, shares her hair color and the heart of gold.
* HeroicSacrifice: She willingly took a dangerous drug to foil Judge's plans to turn her children into {{Tykebomb}}s with a LackOfEmpathy. It unfortunately only worked on Sanji and ended up killing her. Though she never lived to see it, it was her sacrifice that [[SmallRoleBigImpact changed the course of the entire story for the better]], as Sanji grew up fulfilling his dreams of becoming a cook, helping others, and sailing the seas with the Straw Hats. Only Sanji himself and Reiju truly remember her sacrifice, because they both have the compassion and empathy to understand it.
* TheHighQueen: Sora was the beautiful and kind queen of the Germa kingdom.
* IRegretNothing: Reiju told a despondent Sanji years after their mother's death, that Sora didn't regret a thing when she made the decision to protect him and her brothers that killed her.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Not only did Sanji and Reiju physically resemble her in all but eyebrows, they also inherited her kindness, [[BigBrotherBully to both]] [[AbusiveParents their detriment]]. Sanji in particular also became a SpannerInTheWorks like his mother before him, to world-saving degrees (such as the Alabasta and Skypeia arcs). Reiju also inherited Sora's protectiveness and self-sacrificing tendencies, especially when it came to Sanji.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji are the only children of hers who don't share her kindness, because their father Judge messed with their genes and successfully removed their ability to feel compassion while in utero. Sora intended to avert this trope by taking a dangerous drug in hopes of reversing their genetic enhancements, but ended up saving only Sanji and was poisoned to the point of slowly dying. She did, however, manage to preserve what little humanity her other sons had left, later causing them to have an EvenEvilHasStandards moment in Chapter 847 when Big Mom showed them her "[[AndIMustScream library collection]]".
* MamaBear: She vehemently opposed Judge's plans to turn her then-unborn quadruplet sons into utterly remorseless {{Tykebomb}}s, but was still forced to go through with it against her will. To preserve her sons' humanity and protect them from her husband, she secretly took a dangerous drug that reversed gene modifications, [[HeroicSacrifice at the cost of her own life]]. Only Sanji was successfully saved, but his brothers Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji weren't as lucky; they only have but a tiny shred of humanity left.
* MeaningfulName:
** Her name is also the name of the fictional marine soldier, Sora, the hero who opposed the evil forces of the Germa 66 in a propaganda comic strip the Marines published. Certainly also a bit [[IronicName ironic]], that Judge's wife would bear the same name as the Germa 66's fictional ArchEnemy.
** Sora can mean "sky" in Japanese, which can be associated with freedom; she wanted her children (specifically her then-unborn fraternal quadruplet sons) to grow up normally instead of becoming emotionless {{Tykebomb}}s for Judge to use, so she did everything she could to protect them at the cost of her own life. Only Sanji, her third son, grew up free and untouched by Germa's destructive and violent teachings.
* MissingMom: To the Vinsmoke children. Her loss is only truly felt by Reiju and Sanji, as the rest ''can't'' be bothered to feel sorrow for her loss, and Judge's marriage to her soured when he learned she wasn't completely on board with genetic experimentation, especially on their children. She also serves as the lost loved one and CynicismCatalyst for Sanji that is par the course for everyone on the Straw Hat crew (everyone has lost somebody close on the crew).
* MysticalPregnancy: Her husband attempted to modify their sons in the womb, to her horror.
* NeverSpeakIllOfTheDead: Completely averted by her husband and his sons besides Sanji. They don't show Sora a ''shred'' of reverence when she dies. Judge is obviously pissed at her and wanting to forget her, even stomping on the flowers Sanji leaves at her gravestone, and he remains bitter after her practical suicide and takes it out on Sanji. Meanwhile, Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji are incapable of feeling empathy at this and don't care at all. Sanji, however, is broken up by the ordeal and crying uncontrollably, which causes the other quadruplets to beat him up and call him weak and cowardly. Reiju, as well, is deeply hurt by the loss of Sora and comes back to her mother's grave to mourn in private in the rain, where she can finally cry.
* NiceGirl: It's said by both Reiju and Judge that Sanji inherited her immense kindness and his charitable nature continues her legacy. True to form, in flashbacks we see that she treated her kids with nothing but love and respect and was deeply against having Judge remove their empathy and compassion.
* OcularGushers: In a flashback, she bursts into absolute tears as she tells little Reiju and one of her maids what Sanji told her while visiting her that day: "Get better soon."
* OneSteveLimit: {{Averted|Trope}}. She's the third "Sora" in the series, coming after a mermaid who works in the Mermaid Cafe along with the fictional marine hero.
* ParentalFavoritism: While she loved all her children before the gene-altering surgeries, after it happened, Sanji was shown to have a special place in her heart, because he was the only one whose modifications were successfully reversed by the life-killing drug she took to save her sons. That, and he was the only one (other than Reiju) to visit her regularly.
* PeekABangs: Has one eye frequently covered by her hair. Her sons and daughter (save for Yonji) would later inherit her trademark fringe.
* ShootTheShaggyDog: Downplayed, once she found out Judge was tampering with the genes of their unborn children, she took a dangerous drug to undo its effects. Unfortunately, not only did it fail to work on three of her four sons, resulting in the normal son being ostracized by his siblings and Judge, its side-effects eventually lead to her being bedridden for the rest of her life, and a slow premature death. The one son it did work on, however, was pretty much the opposite of this, as shown by SmallRoleBigImpact below.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: She was shown only in flashbacks, as she died prematurely. Her kindness and sacrifice to save her quadruplet sons not only saved Sanji from becoming his father's weapon, but also impacted the entire story - the Straw Hat pirates would not have been able to defeat dangerous {{Big Bad}}s such as Crocodile and Eneru if they didn't have someone helping them from behind the scenes, and Sanji certainly wouldn't be compassionate enough to provoke [[BrokenBird Charlotte Pudding]] into having a VillainousBSOD after she revealed her ThirdEye during their wedding.
* SpannerInTheWorks: She foiled Judge's plans by taking a dangerous drug that undid gene modifications, resulting in Sanji becoming a normal boy upon birth (his brothers weren't so lucky, though). [[LikeFatherLikeSon It's clear where Sanji got his villain-stopping tendencies from]].
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: "Sora" or "Sola"?
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Aside from the eyebrows, Reiju looks identical to her, albeit a bit fiercer-looking. Reiju and Sanji are also her only children who inherited her compassion and gentleness. Her other sons Yonji, Ichiji, and Niji also resemble her to varying degrees.
* UglyGuyHotWife: All of her children certainly didn't get their good looks from their ugly and brutish father.
* WomenAreWiser: She knew that tampering with genetics - especially ''her'' kids' genetics - was unethical and wrong, so when talking Judge out of it didn't work, she turned to desperate measures to protect her then-unborn quadruplet sons from her husband's influence so they could grow up normally. We later see why: had Sanji turned out as bad as his brothers, the Vinsmoke family would meet a bloody end at the hands of the Charlotte family, because the key part to saving them hinged on Sanji still caring enough about them to decide to save them even though he managed to escape his whole predicament on the Whole Cake Island and is ready to go back to the Straw Hats.

!!"Holy Mother" Carmel
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/FumiHirano (JP)
!!!'''Age:''' 80
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 861 (Manga), Episode 831 (Anime)
!!!'''Devil Fruit:''' [[SoulPower Soul-Soul Fruit]]

[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mother_carmel_anime.png]]

Big Mom's caretaker from when she was still young. A wandering nun who was once known as just "Sister" Carmel, she earned her title as the "Holy Mother" by saving the remnants of the Giant Warrior Pirates from being executed by the Marines 100 years ago. Shortly thereafter, she opened an orphanage for human children on the Giants' home island of Elbaf with the intentions of giving abandoned kids a home to call their own along with strengthening human-giant relations.\\\

About 63 years ago, she took in the 5 year old Charlotte Linlin at her orphanage, raising her with love and acceptance despite the young girl's [[CreepyChild unsettling]] [[PersonOfMassDestruction destructive capabilities]]. As such, Carmel's sudden disappearance one day under mysterious circumstances had great lasting effects on Linlin, helping [[StartOfDarkness shape her into the ruthless monster she would become]].\\\

In reality though, her orphanage was just a front for her slave trade business and a means of getting her hands on new kids to sell, including as child soldiers to the World Government. In the Underworld, she is known as the '''Mountain Witch'''.\\\

She was also the user of the Soul-Soul Fruit (''Soru Soru no Mi'') before Big Mom, allowing her to imbue inanimate objects with souls as well as steal the souls of others away from them.
----
* AllLovingHero: Subverted; no matter the race, she took care of many children and apparently loved them as her own, but in truth she couldn't care less about the kids themselves and sold them as spies and soldiers to the highest bidder.
* AnimateInanimateObject: Like Big Mom, she had the power to create these using the Soul-Soul Fruit.
* AssholeVictim: She was EATEN by Linlin by accident on her 6th Birthday, but she definitely had it coming (unlike the orphans).
* BadassPacifist: She publicly opposed the Marines when they tried to execute some Giant Warrior Pirates, claiming they would suffer Elbaf's retaliation if they didn't release the prisoners. They listened to her. With the reveal of her true nature, however, it's unknown if she was ''actually'' against violence. However, judging by her comments, it's likely this was also simply a ruse.
* BadPowersBadPeople: We have a pretty good idea of what she was capable of with her Devil Fruit powers via watching Big Mom use it. Carmel didn't get a chance to use its more heinous applications onscreen though.
* BeautyIsBad: Mother Carmel was absolutely beautiful as a younger woman at age 43, but she was every bit as evil back then as she was by the time she was old; using her statements to create a timeline, she began trafficking children at around age 30.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Ask anyone and they'll tell you she's the "Holy Mother", the kindest, most compassionate and forgiving person you'll ever meet. In reality her orphanage is just a front for her slave trade business and a means of getting her hands on new kids to sell. In the Underworld she is known as the "Mountain Witch".
* ConsummateLiar: Like her "surrogate daughter" Linlin would grow up to be, she was a master manipulator and an effective liar, playing the marines, the giants, the kids under her care, and ''everyone'' else at the same time. She does, at least, reveal her lies in the black market business.
* DramaticIrony: Big Mom grew up to obsess over Carmel and basically dedicate herself to fulfilling her supposed "wish" of racial unity, never finding out that Carmel was a slave trader just trying to sell her off to the highest bidder. Big Mom is also completely unaware that she ''ate'' her by accident, believing to the present day that she simply disappeared into thin air.
* EatenAlive: While it's not shown, she got accidentally devoured by LinLin in a feeding frenzy along with the semla and the rest of the orphans. Because of this, LinLin got Carmel's Soul Soul Fruit.
* EvilAllAlong: The entire holy mother figure is just a cover for her to adopt children of various races and to sell them to the World Government. Even her rescue of the Giant Pirates from execution was simply a ploy to gain the giants' trust.
* EvilOrphanageLady: Mother Carmel only pretended to love the children under her care as their ParentalSubstitute; her real reason for taking them in was so that she could later sell them as slaves or child soldiers to the government. To this day, Big Mom doesn't know about Carmel's true nature or the fact her "foster mother figure" never cared about her as a person at all.
* {{Familiar}}: Like Big Mom, she was capable of creating these, such as when she tamed the fires of Elbaf and turned it into a living miniature sun.
* {{Foil}}: To the Elite Officers of the Donquixote Family. Both took interest in a young child after they displayed considerable power and enabled their bad behaviours growing up but while they care deeply for Doflamingo and even show UndyingLoyalty toward him, she only saw Linlin as a precious cargo and the loving mother figure Linlin remembered her by is but a facade.
* {{Gonk}}: She manages to [[ZigZaggedTrope zig-zag]] this trope. She doesn't look too bad while pretending to be a sweet old lady, [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Carmel?file=Carmel_Manga_Infobox.png appearing to be a genuinely friendly looking grandmotherly figure]]. ''But'', when she's being [[{{Jerkass}} herself]], her cruder expressions [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Carmel?file=Carmel_Meets_With_CP-0.png definitely highlight her weird, square shaped face and gaunt cheekbones]], making her considerably uglier. In fact, she resembles a fairy tale witch in many ways, making her Underworld epithet that much more fitting.
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking: She smokes a neat little cigarette; this seemed to put her on the good side of this trope, until the reveal in chapter 867 firmly put it in the evil side.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: She really, '''really''' should have thought twice before enabling the bad (though misguided) habits of a CreepyChild with both insatiable hunger and ''very'' dangerous powers.
* HollywoodNuns: Subverted: she hits all of the major points, being a sweet and nurturing elderly woman wearing the traditional "penguin suit" and vaguely making references to Christianity, and her epithet is even the "Holy Mother". However, this is a facade to hide her true nature as a slave trader.
* IWasQuiteALooker: ''Was she ever'' when she was 43. It's implied that she purposefully used her looks (first as a beautiful woman, then later as a grandmotherly figure) to create her trusting image.
* {{Jerkass}}: Nothing says "cruel" like taking in lost and homeless children and pretend to be kind to them, only to sell them as slaves.
* JustDesserts: It's implied Big Mom accidentally [[EatenAlive ate her]] while gorging on her Croquembouche on her 6th birthday.
* MeaningfulName: Both her given name and her Underworld epithet. Carmel is a reference to the religious order, Carmelites, who are known in Japan for selling sweets which matches the EdibleThemeNaming of the Big Mom Pirates and Charlotte Family. This also fits with her public image of a nun and her title as "Holy Mother". Her Underworld epithet "the Mountain Witch" (''Yamanba'') is a reference to the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yama-uba Yama-uba/Yamamba]] of Japanese folklore, witch-like creatures who were thought to nurse children to a certain age before devouring them. This mirrors how Carmel would raise children just to sell them ''and'' creates some twisted irony in the fact that ''she'' was eaten by one of the children rather than the other way around.
* MissingMom: She was Big Mom's sole parental figure after her real parents [[ParentalAbandonment abandoned her]], and she went missing under "mysterious circumstances" as Big Mom believes it. In truth, she was accidentally '''eaten''' by Big Mom on her sixth birthday.
* MundaneUtility: She uses a sun-homie she created to merely light her cigarette- but, as we've seen Big Mom in action with Prometheus, we know how dangerous a homie like this ''actually'' is.
* NiceGirl: Harshly subverted; she seemed to be an incredibly compassionate and holy woman, taking in unwanted kids and convincing the Marines to free the giants they were set to execute. She even forgave a young Big Mom for all of the wanton destruction she would cause, understanding that she was just a child. Too bad it was all an act, to hide her true nature as a child slaver.
* NunTooHoly: Turns out, she's a child slaver and seller in the underground market, purposefully using her image as a nun to create a fake, trusting persona. She also had a connection with the Cipher Pol.
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Carmel?file=Carmel_at_Age_43.png Carmel was remarkably fresh-faced at age 43]], appearing to be about half her actual age. Subverted as she got older though, as she certainly looked her age by the time she was 80.
* OneLastJob: Big Mom was supposed to be her final product before [[{{Retirony}} she retired from being a child slaver]], but during Big Mom's sixth birthday she and along with the other children was accidentally eaten by Big Mom.
* OrphanageOfLove: Exploited and somewhat Deconstructed. Her Sheep's House was a front for her child trafficking operation, but most of the children were castaways and she treated them with love and respect (even if it's all an act). Because of its reputation as a genuine OrphanageOfLove, the Sheep's House allowed her to smoothly run her operation for decades.
* OurSoulsAreDifferent: When she pulls out a piece of her soul to create a homie, it manifests as a gooey-looking, otherworldly substance.
* ParentalSubstitute: She was this to many abandoned kids under her care, including Big Mom. Sadly, she was really a slave trader, with the kids not knowing better.
* PsychoticSmirk: Sports one as she talks about finally being able to "retire" after she sells off Linlin.
* {{Retirony}}: Linlin and the other orphans were going to be her last deal before she finally decided to wash her hands of the slave trade, but she and the other orphans disappeared under... [[GoryDiscretionShot mysterious circumstances]] on Linlin's sixth birthday.
* SoulPower: It's all but outright stated that she was the previous user of the Soul-Soul Fruit when she manifested her own soul into a raging fire and turned it into a docile, sentient creature almost identical to Big Mom's Prometheus. Not long after Linlin (presumably) ate her, the former also gained the ability.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: There was originally some confusion over whether it was "Carmel" or "Caramel". Translators eventually confirmed that it's Carmel, but don't be surprised if you see her referred to as "Caramel" here and there.
* SuperHumanTrafficking: Her real job. One of her notable scores was Vice Admiral John Giant, the first Giant Marine soldier. Charlotte Linlin was supposed to be her retirement plan.
* TraumaButton: ''Break'' or shatter her picture, and Big Mom will FreakOut.
* UncertainDoom: Her and the orphans' final fate were never explicitly confirmed, only told through the reactions of others. It's implied that Linlin ate them all, judging by the circumstances, bystander reactions, and Big Mom's unexplained inheritance of Carmel's powers right after she disappeared. Given [[GoryDiscretionShot the horrific and graphic nature of that implication]], it's unlikely that it'll ever be shown in detail.
* VillainousLegacy: While her true nature was never revealed, Mother Carmel's villainy continues to live on and blight the world through Big Mom. It's also PlayedWith, in that it wasn't her villainy that motivates Big Mom but rather the lies she told a young Linlin -- Big Mom's ultimate goal is to create a world where all races can live together peacefully and see each other "eye-to-eye", like Carmel espoused to her in order to continue projecting her image as a kind, holy nun.
* WiseOldFolkFacade: She was a kindly mother figure to all of the children in the orphanage, no matter where they may come from. However, it's revealed to be a facade; she regularly sells the children to the highest bidder so they'll grow up to become assassins or soldiers.

63 years ago, "Beardfall" Jorul and "Beardhill" Jarul were two of the most respected Giant Warriors of Elbaf, former Co-captains of the Giant Warriors Pirates before Brogy and Dorry, and good friends to "Holy Mother" Carmel... until a young Charlotte Linlin killed Jorul in one of her hunger-induced rampages. In his grief, Jarul decided to kill her, but was stopped by Carmel. He instead exiled them all and made sure all of Elbaf learned what Linlin had done.
----
* BadassBeard: Oh Yes! Both of them had massive beards befitting their monikers. Both were also legendary warriors.
* CurbStompBattle: Jorul was on the receiving end of one, courtesy of the future Big Mom.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: They are Brogy and Dorry's predecessors as captains of the Giant Warriors Pirates, and they know the young Hajrudin, thus making them acquataince to 3 of 5 Straw Hat's giant allies.
* RealityEnsues: Had Jorul faced Linlin in his prime and incurred the injuries he suffered, he would have been able to recover and live, but at his old age (300 is about as long as giants live) there was nothing that could save him from death short of a miracle.
** Having a BadassBeard may look cool and all, but it makes for an easy target for an opponent to grab onto, as Jorul finds out the hard way.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Jorul and Jarul gave us the first glimpse into a proper Elbaf leader: extremely militaristic yet perfectly willing to listen to a pacifist.
* RetiredBadass: Both of them, being the former leaders of the Giant Warrior pirates, and being 344 and 345 years old (which roughly translates to 114 and 115 in human years). Even in giant years, they are exceptionally old.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Jorl/Yorle/Yorl/Yoruru, Jarl/Yarle/Yarl/Yaruru (the last of each is how the katakana is pronounced).
* UncertainDoom: We don't know if Jarul is still alive, but most giants don't live much longer than 300, and he was actually ''past'' that point of life.
* WeaponTombstone: Jorul was buried with his sword and viking helmet marking his burial mound atop the highest cliff overlooking the valley beyond the village of Elbaf. There are also bandages used to mend the weapons where Linlin broke the points, horns, and spikes off when she attacked him.
* TheWorfEffect: Jorul's death was mostly to highlight Charlotte Linlin's extreme strength. However, it was also a case of WorfHadTheFlu, because Jorul was well past his prime when Linlin trounced him in a single blow.

[[folder:Rocks]]
!!Rocks D. Xebec
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 957 (Manga)

[[quoteright:260:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rocks_7.PNG]]

The mysterious pirate captain who was a prominent figure 40 years ago, long before the rise of Pirate King Gold Roger. He led the Rocks Pirates, and they were the most powerful crew of their era, until Monkey D. Garp and Roger defeated them in a battle that later came to be known as the God Valley Incident, earning Garp the title "Hero of the Marines". However, many of Rocks's crew are still around and became big name pirates in their own right with their own powerful crews, and the Marines fear that the Rocks Pirates' return would be a disaster.

Due to his knowledge of the World Government's taboo subjects, much of the God Valley Incident and his life as a whole were erased from record, and as such Rocks was never given a bounty - though if he had, it could be assumed to be on par with or higher than Roger's.

----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: His claim to infamy is fighting against the Celestial Dragons, which is justified in most cases. He is also a carrier of the Will of the D, meaning his conflict with the World Nobles was inevitable. On the other hand, his crew comprised of the greedy Big Mom, nihilistic Kaido, and morally upstanding Whitebeard, among others like "Golden Lion" Shiki. His explicit goal was to ''take over the world.'' So him fighting the World Nobles is mainly to ''usurp'' them.
* AnimeHair: His hair looks like a porcupine.
* {{Archenemy}}: Described as Gol D. Roger's first and greatest rival, so much so that he teamed up with Garp to defeat Rocks.
* BadBoss: As one might expect, ''avenging'' Rocks was the furthest thing from the minds of any of his former crew.
* BadassCrew: He was the captain of one, aptly described as "the strongest pirate crew in the world." One look at the crew's roster is enough to say that even 40 years later, that status was not an exaggeration by any stretch. His crew boasted ''three'' of the first generation of the Four Emperors, as well as other names like Shiki, Silver Axe, and Captain John.
* CrypticBackgroundReference: Even in the world of One Piece, knowledge of him is rather scant, having been out of mind for almost 40 years. Justified, as the World Government tried to scrub him from history, and the few people who do know about him and are untouchable by the WG are people who don't care to talk about him.
* DecapitatedArmy: Once he died, his crew disbanded and went their separate ways since they all hated each other and no longer had any reason to stick around.
* GodzillaThreshold: His crew was so powerful that Garp had to team up with Rogers to take him down.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Before the Pirate King and the Four Emperors, there was simply "Rocks". He gathered a crew full of incredibly powerful members including Kaido, Big Mom, Whitebeard, and Shiki, and then terrorized the world in his quest to become king of everything. In the wake of his death, many of his crew members would go their separate ways to become powerful, big name pirates and continue terrorizing the world, but even still, none them have yet managed to achieve their captain's level of infamy.
* HerosEvilPredecessor: One of the former members of the Rocks Pirates, Whitebeard, later formed his own crew and becomes one of the Four Emperors who rules over the New World.
* MeaningfulName: Xebec is the name of a type of ship, so appropriate for a pirate. Granted, a xebec was a Mediterranean sailing ship used primarily for trading, so not wholly fitting. However, the ship was used by Barbary corsairs in their raids and the word ''xebec'' may originate from the Arab word ''shabbak'', which means a small warship.
* NoodleIncident: It's heavily implied he attacked God Valley (which was inhabited by the World Nobles who consider themselves gods) for more reasons than just attacking the World Nobles. The newer Marines wonder what was on that island, only for Sengoku to claim the island [[BlatantLies mysteriously disappeared]] after that day and warn them to stop looking further into the matter, since the World Government obviously wants to cover it up.
* PosthumousCharacter: He died some 38 years ago, but he still holds a tremendous influence over the world's current state through his crew members.
* PredecessorVillain: In two ways. First, two of his cremates, Kaido and Big Mom, who become two of the most infamous pirates in the modern day as they are two of the more villainous Four Emperors. The second is to Blackbeard, being an evil D. carrier in conflict with a more moral D. carrier who wanted to take over the world. They both gathered a crew full of infamous pirates who all don't get along well, held together only by their captain's strength, and the Rocks Pirates formed on the Pirate Island Beehive, where the Blackbeard Pirates are currently stationed at.
** Interestingly enough, Blackbeard was born in the same year Rocks started his crew and campaign and his main ship is known as "Sabre of Xebec", further suggesting a connection between the two.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: "Rocks" or "Locks" was the fan translation until VIZ confirmed it as "Rox". However, it was revealed in chapter 957 that Oda spells it as "ROCKS" in plain English on his flag and sail. VIZ went with the spelling of "Rocks" with its release of that chapter.
* TakeOverTheWorld: His greatest ambition was to take over the world.
* {{Unperson}}: He studied many taboo subjects in his quest for world domination, leading the World Government to hush up his existence after his defeat. Despite his influence on the current state of the world, very few of the new generations of Marines know of his existence, while the older generation, including Garp, refuse to talk about him, and former crew members downplayed their appearance in his crew, because most of them [[TeethClenchedTeamwork hated each other]] and they don't like being reminded that they once worked together.
* VillainousLegacy: His defeat rocketed Garp to become the Hero of the Marines, and made Gol D. Roger a threat to reckon with years before he became the Pirate King. His crew boasted 3 of the original 4 Emperors (the sole exception is Shanks), while being indirectly responsible for the status of all the current Emperors. Then there's the fact that he appears a successor of his own in Marshall D. Teach...
* WorldsStrongestMan: Undoubtedly the strongest man of his time, so much so that he was able to hold together a group of powerful pirates including three of the future Four Emperors who all hated each other with nothing more than his strength alone, and Garp had to team up with Roger just to beat him. Considering that each of the above mentioned individuals is a contender for the title of WorldsStrongestMan in their heyday, it speaks volumes about his strength.

[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bell_mere_anime.png]]

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Bellemere? Belle-Mère? Bell-Mère?

!!Dr. Hiriluk
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Shigeru Ushiyama (JP), Frank Guida (EN, 4Kids), Mark Stoddard (EN, Funi), Jesús Cortez (Latin American Spanish)

* MadScientist: A little, and good-natured.

-----

* CoolTeacher: To Robin and possibility the closest thing to a ParentalSubstitute she had when her mother was away as he and the rest of the scholars were the only nice people on Ohara towards her.

* SignatureLaugh: "Dereshishishishi!"

As her name indicates, she's Robin's mother. She was in the exploration team that was studying Poneglyps and the Blank Century. However the team was captured by the Marines and commanded to be executed while the Buster Call was ordered on her island. Saul, disagreeing with such punishment, helped her escape.

* SwordAndGun: When fighting back Dadan and Ace.
* TooDumbToLive: Did he really think that the King would let him, a lowlife pirate, join the ranks of ''nobility??''
* VillainousBreakdown: As he realize that the King has double-crossed them and left his crew to die in the fire he commisioned.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Bluejam kills Porchemy after his humiliating defeat at the hands of Ace and Sabo.

!!!'''Age:''' 48
!!!'''Debut:''' Chapter 521 (Manga), Episode 415 (Anime)

[[quoteright:305:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fisher_tiger_anime.png]]

->''"There are plenty of compassionate humans in this world! I know that! It's foolish to die and leave only hatred as a legacy! I know that! But my reason is overpowered by the demon in my heart! My very flesh refuses their blood! '''I cannot love humans... ever!!'''"''
-->--'''Fisher Tiger's dying words, Chapter 623'''

* KnightTemplar:
* TigerVersusDragon:

* AllLovingHero:
* BadassPacifist
* TheHighQueen: Of Fish-Man Island.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed:

!!!'''Devil Fruit:''' [[QuieterThanSilence Calm-Calm Fruit]]

* ConsummateLiar:
* FacingTheBulletsOneLiner:
* {{Foil}}:
* TheKlutz:
* LikeFatherLikeSon:
* MoralityChain:
* WouldHurtAChild:
* YouCanTalk:

* MeaningfulName:
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: "Sora" or "Sola"?
