The Guild of Mercantilers presents itself as the face of law and order in Malifaux, an ever-vigilant force dedicated to protecting the citizens and civilizing the untamed wilderness of the new world. This is a secondary concern on a good day. In reality, they’re a ruthless organization of merchants and their private armies who have managed to become the only legitimate government in Malifaux with just about every nation’s blessing. Their sole concern is maintaining their monopoly on the sale of soulstones and the power and profits that come with it.

The Amalgamation Charter Enforcement Office is one of the Guild’s special divisions, tasked with regulating the use of cybernetic enhancements as well as maintaining the Guild’s fleet of mechanical soldiers and other assets. With the recent downfall of the infamous Victor Ramos, they’ve also been tasked with safely recovering any of his work and putting it to use for the Guild’s benefit.

The King’s Empire and the Guild have been on the outs for years now, the British growing increasingly tired of the Guild’s exploitative pricing and outrageous demands for their soulstones. However, the arrival of the Burning Man has forced the two sides to reopen communication. As a show of good will, the King’s Army has loaned one of their most explosive military units to the Guild, hoping they’ll put them to good use fighting the forces coming through the rifts.

Elite

The Elite Division is one of the Guild’s most infamous departments. On the surface, they’re a collection of lawyers, clerks, and scribes who make sure that the Guild’s laws are followed. But beneath that, they might be the most cutthroat division in the whole Guild, using blackmail, espionage, and black magic to command Malifaux from the shadows.

Family

On paper, the Neverborn Hunter Division is the Guild special division dedicated to protecting human settlements from Neverborn attacks, mostly through funding independent gunslingers skilled in hunting down the native monsters. And the best among these hired guns is the Ortega family, a clan of legendary gunslingers who even the Neverborn fear.

Frontier

One of the Guild’s stated goals is to settle all of Malifaux, bringing civilization to all corners of the wasted landscape. To this end, they employ an enormous number of scouts, guides, and skilled frontiersmen to explore and protect the lands beyond Malifaux City, ensuring that their settlers feel safe and secure in their new homes.

Guard

The Guild Guard is the law in Malifaux City and beyond, acting as the Guild’s fist in dealing with their enemies. In practice, they’re a private military force on par with some smaller nations, and given unilateral right to do whatever they need to do to maintain law and order in the Guild’s territory. No matter what it takes.

Journalist

Malifaux has a handful of newspapers, ranging from reputable to sensationalist rags. Most people don’t realize that every newspaper that stays in business does so only at the Guild’s whim. The Malifaux Tattler is perhaps the most well-known and well-loved of all of these rags, and a perfect propaganda mouthpiece of the Guild.

Marshal

The Death Marshals are one of the most beloved of the Guild’s special divisions, and for good reason. Dedicated to the destruction of the undead and the Resurrectionists, they are legitimately heroic, defending the ordinary people from mad men and murderers. Most people don’t realize how similar their powers are to the very necromancers that they hunt…

Witch Hunter

The Witch Hunter Division is as feared as the Death Marshals are beloved. Dedicated to hunting anyone who dares use magic outside of the Guild’s strict control, the Witch Hunters live up to their names as brutal secret police, using their own mystical arts to fight fire with fire and imprisoning or slaying any who stand in their way.

Other Guild Characters

The Guild is more than just its special divisions and most well-renowned heroes. Countless others work under its banner, either to fulfill their own ambitions or out of an honest desire to see law and order prevail over the forces of chaos and destruction.
