* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the CowboyCop. [[spoiler: Nick started his career as a genuinely good cop, or, at least a well-meaning one. But he was eventually broken when he walked into a crime scene where an abusive husband murdered his wife and left his baby's corpse in a microwave, causing Nick to violently kill the man out of rage because he felt that he could have prevented their deaths had he just avoided procedure. The trauma of seeing such a thing eventually caused him to divorce his wife before she could tell him that she was pregnant with Hailey and after she found out he was having an affair with a co-worker to cope with the trauma. After retiring and becoming a hitman, it's clear that his new "guilty before being proven innocent" mentality has made him a miserable, self-hating jerk who no longer cares if he lives or dies, and he has very few to no friends as everyone has abandoned him. Nick has some self-awareness of how toxic his lifestyle is and his hallucinations in season 2 suggest that he does feel remorse for killing people, for destroying Hailey's innocence, and Happy even tells him that the best thing to do for Hailey is to abandon her.]]

* InnocenceLost: [[spoiler: After the events of season 1, Hailey has become incredibly jaded and wary of adults. As shown by how suspicious she was of an Easter Bunny mascot when she saw him touch a child's shoulder.
