Ecco
A wild dolphin who’s the hero of the series. He is expressionless, compassionate, and completely indefatigable, readily accepting the duty of saving the entire world. In both series, he originates from a utopian Earth where dolphins and humans live in harmony.
- Guile Hero: His ability to navigate mazes and understand foreign machinery is just as important as his willingness to bash sharks with his nose.
- Implacable Man: There is nothing that can stand in Ecco’s way- not boulders or sharks or alien hordes or his enemy changing the timeline on him.
- Polyglot: In the Defender universe, he learns the Songs (languages) of fish, turtles, and manta rays.
The Foe
An insectoid alien species who are Defender of the Future's main antagonists.
- Always Chaotic Evil: If there is any capacity for individuality or kindness in them, we don't see it. As the narrator delicately puts it; "aggression was their highest calling".
- Horror Hunger: A Foe hatchling will eat through its mother's flesh if allowed.
