During the first few episodes of the first season, he attempts a HeelFaceTurn much like [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSeed Athrun Zala]] did. Then, as the series goes on, he gets his own AceCustom SuperPrototype mech[[note]]The Tharsis's performance even evokes the combat style of the Sinanju Stein, later to become [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn Full Frontal's red-and-gold Sinanju]][[/note]], gradually becoming more and more of A CHAR in the process, and by the end, he becomes a [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamCharsCounterattack Char's Counterattack-type]] by ascending himself to BigBad status, only short of going Full Zeon with Vers.
** The Char analogies further deepen with him being the {{Foil}} to Inaho (who is himself an Amuro clone). Both love the same woman, both have unique abilities that allow them to power special mecha, and there are many hints that they could be great friends if they weren't bitter rivals.

* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Marylcian's Herschel is virtually all-red, and with its AttackDrones is [[{{Expy}} far more similar structurally to the]] [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamCharsCounterattack Sazabi]] than Slaine's own Tharsis. [[SubvertedTrope This is definitively subverted]], however, since [[WrongGenreSavvy Marylcian is not the]] CharClone of this series.

* ShipTease: With Marito.

* ShipTease: There's enough hints that he's not entirely indifferent about Yuki Kaizuka.

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He's the leader of the pro-war conspiracy within the Vers Empire, and their deadliest warrior. Of course, [[AsskickingLeadsToLeadership Orbital Knights are expected to be capable fighters in order to justify their position]], but Saazbaum just goes beyond.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His name is derived from a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazurka traditional Polish dance]], which is spelled exactly this way in Polish, and the most subs use this spelling. On the other hand, the Japanese narration clearly says "Mazurka", which is a name of the dance that is normally used outside of Poland and is actually more popular around the world.

* TheArcher: The ''Scandia'' use explosive arrows so enemies can't trace the shots back to her.

* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:Count Crutheo's death at the hands of Saazbaum feels like righteous karma, after theway Crutheo had been treating Slaine.]]

* TheComicallySerious: All the time, which probably is one of the main reasons for her being HollywoodDateless.

* AmbiguousDisorder: He's very single-minded, [[NoSocialSkills has severe difficulty communicating]], and [[CloudCuckoolander can get lost in his own world at times]]. He's outrageously calm for being a {{Child Soldier|s}} and barely emotes at all. From a clinic perspective, those traits could be genuinely mistaken for a mild form of autism, but whether they are intended to be such or it's just a coincidential impression about the character is anyone's best guess.

* NoSocialSkills: He has severe difficulty not reverting straight to BrutalHonesty when talking to people, and often fails to grasp the context of questions he's asked (for example, he often interprets 'why did you do X' as 'why did you do X in Y manner' rather than 'why did you do X ''at all'''). More dangerously, he has great difficulty in explaining himself to others, and tends to use actions rather than words to get himself out of tight situations. Generally taken as further evidence of that AmbiguousDisorder of his.
** In season 2, he notes that Inko's gained weight, calls her out on stress eating and her excuses, and flusters poor Inko almost to tears. And he has no idea what happened.

** His pragmatism is very similar to [[LightNovel/FullMetalPanic Sagara Sousuke]], and his ability to win with an underpowered mecha is similar to [[Anime/ArmoredTrooperVOTOMS Chirico Cuvie]].

* ContraltoOfDanger: Fitting her status as TheBaroness, she has the lowest voice of the entire female cast.

* ClassyCane: Being a noble, he carries around a cane. His happens to contain a whip.

A Martian Visountess and the pilot of the Deucalion Kataphrakt, which [[GravityMaster controls gravity]]. She is responsible for wiping out Marito's platoon. The remains of her mecha would eventually be converted by Earth forces into a flying battleship prototype. She was also Saazbaum's fiancee, and perished in the aftermath of the Hypergate's destruction, leading to Saazbaum's grudge against the royals.

* RagsToRoyalty: In episode 19, Slaine gives him a personal Kataphrakt for his undying loyalty.

* ThrownOutTheAirlock: Slaine cuts his cockpit open, leaving Marylcian to die in space.
