Lords of the Riverlands from their fortress of Riverrun. Unlike the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, they were never Kings of their own realm, but were granted lordship under Aegon the Conqueror. Their current head, Hoster Tully, has three children: the two daughters Catelyn and Lysa, who married Eddard Stark and Jon Arryn, and the son Edmure, who will succeed him when he dies. They ally with the North during the War of the Five Kings. Their members tend to have fiery red hair and their sigil is a leaping silver trout.

Not to be confused with House Tarly, a Tyrell vassal house.

Based in the appropriately named [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Dreadfort]], the Boltons are largely the TokenEvilTeammate and PsychoForHire of House Stark and their most powerful bannermen. Centuries ago they used to be TheRival to the Starks in dominace over the North. They have a morbid practice of skinning their enemies and displaying all their skins in the Dreadfort, a castle on the brinks of the Weeping Water with legendary torture chambers. The "Leech Lord" Roose Bolton is the head of the house, which seems to consist only of him, his bastard son Ramsay, and his overweight wife Fat Walda. They have icily pale eyes and their sigil is a red flayed man on a pink field, and their house words ([[WordOfGod as revealed by GRRM]]) are, "Our blades are sharp."

* AlwaysChaoticEvil: To the point that fans asked Martin about the possibility of a Bolton character who wasn't a total psycho. The family has a terrible reputation in-universe and out, and while the deceased Domeric was supposedly a decent guy, of the living Boltons, Roose is heavily hinted to be a cold psychopath, Walda was at the very least complicit in "wedding planning", and Ramsay is... well, Ramsay.
* AscendedMeme: In-universe, a common saying among Boltons and their sworn men is that "a flayed man holds no secrets."
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: This seems to be the "hat" for the Boltons ("''Our Blades Are Sharp''", anyone??). Roose at least considers the pros and cons first. Ramsay, on the other hand, will do it because he can't really control himself (see StupidEvil below). [[spoiler: During the war Roose betrays the Starks and assists the Freys and Lannisters in orchestrating the "Red Wedding," where he murders Robb himself.]]

* ObviouslyEvil: They live in a place called The Dreadfort. Their sigil is a ''flayed man''. What about that says "trustworthy"? Although Ramsay's... weird tendencies at least seem to be an open secret in the North. Although they do start out on the "good" side.

In the end, he says, the fox got away, his favorite horse came up lame and had to be put down, and ''the woman he raped wasn't nearly as good a lay as he'd hoped'', which made for a pretty lousy day in the end.
* CaptainErsatz: Roose is pretty much a LowFantasy version of {{Dracula}} (except he bleeds himself with leeches rather than drinking others blood) while Ramsay being an open psychopath fascinated with a gruesome form of execution reminds of Dracula's purported historical inspiration, Vlad III of Wallachia. The Dreadfort's long history as a rival, then restive vassal ([[spoiler:who ends pulling TheStarscream and allying with the southern enemy of its overlord]]) of the North also mirrors Wallachia's relationship with Hungary and its policy around the time of Vlad III's father's reign, Vlad II, in particular. To top it off, Vlad III was [[BastardBastard possibly ilegitimate]], and definitely not a son by any of Vlad II's first wives, making him as much an UnexpectedSuccessor as Ramsay is of Roose.

* GoodEyesEvilEyes: Roose has creepy "pale" eyes. When casually discussing the moment a woman he raped came to him claiming she'd bore his bastard child, Roose admitted the moment he saw those same eyes staring back at him, he accepted Ramsay was his son.

* LackOfEmpathy: Roose seems utterly incapable of forming connections with people, at his most gracious treating someone with fond amusement. He's devoid of emotion when recounting the murder of his son Domeric and while stating the likelihood that Ramsay will kill any other trueborn children he has.
* ManipulativeBastard: Roose is certainly very good at this, and Ramsay plays [[spoiler: Theon]] like a harp while he's in disguise. A crucial difference is that Ramsay's sadistic psychopathic tendencies make him impulsive and prone to shooting himself in the foot. Roose has no such weakness.
* NoMrBondIExpectYouToDine: Roose pulls this on [[spoiler: Jaime and Brienne]] at Harrenhall. With the former, Roose is trying to make absolutely sure that [[spoiler: Jaime]] will make it clear to his father that Roose was not responsible for the loss of his hand. Their members tend to have a weaselly appearance and their sigil is two towers.

Their seat is Brightwater Keep, situated on the Honeywine River. While initially siding with Renly Baratheon in the War of Five Kings, they switched allegiance over to Stannis Baratheon. They have since been disentitled from their lands in the Reach by Tywin Lannister.

Their sigil is a red-gold fox's head encircled by lapis lazuli flowers. Their house words are currently unknown.

House Tarly is a vassal house sworn to House Tyrell in the Reach. Their home is at Horn Hill, in the foothills north of Oldtown and the Red Mountains of Dorne. The current lord is Randyll Tarly, currently serving as master of laws at King's Landing. Lord Tarly's wife, Melessa Florent, their three daughters and youngest son Dickon have not yet been seen in the books, while his eldest son, Samwell, serves in the Night's Watch. Tropes relevant to Samwell can be found on that page. The sigil of House Tarly is a striding huntsman, while their house words have not yet been revealed.

Includes but is not limited to chaining him to a wall for three days, having him beaten by knights and men-at-arms, forcing him to sleep in chainmail, and even having him ''bathed in the blood of a freshly-slaughtered aurochs'', at the behest of two warlocks. * StrawMisogynist: When Brienne found herself "courted" by knights of the camp, who were actually putting money on who could sleep with her first, Tarly put an end to the bet before it could, he assumed, escalate to rape, and told Brienne what was going on. Seems fair enough, until he bluntly tells Brienne that by dressing up like a knight, she was asking for it.
