!'''Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms'''
These Houses rule over vast holdings that were kingdoms in their own right before the Targaryen conquest. They have many subordinate Houses as bannermen, and owe fealty to no-one but the King himself. The other Great Houses all have their own pages.

[[folder: House Tully]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/house-tully-001_7989.png

->"''[[ThickerThanWater Family]], [[ComesGreatResponsibility Duty]], [[HonorBeforeReason Honor]].''"
--> - '''Tully House Words'''

Lords of the Riverlands from their fortress of Riverrun. Unlike the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, they were never Kings of their own realm, but were granted lordship under Aegon the Conqueror. Their current head, Hoster Tully, has three children: the two daughters Catelyn and Lysa, who married Eddard Stark and Jon Arryn, and the son Edmure, who will succeed him when he dies. They ally with the North during the War of the Five Kings. Their members tend to have fiery red hair and their sigil is a leaping silver trout.

Not to be confused with House Tarly, a Tyrell vassal house.

!!Tropes related to most Tullys:
* AnimalMotifs: Leaping trouts, referencing the Riverlands' rich, well, rivers.
* ButtMonkey: Unfortunately, House Tully's kingdom (the Riverlands) is the main battleground of the civil war.
* TheClan
* ColorCodedCharacters: Tullys tend to have red hair and blue eyes.
* ComesGreatResponsibility
* ConflictingLoyalty: Check their motto. Duty is in the middle but to what: Family or Honor?
* EveryoneWentToSchoolTogether: Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish grew up at Riverrun as a ward of Hoster Tully, and as such has had (mis)adventures with all three Tully siblings and even Brandon Stark.
* FieryRedhead / HeroesWantRedheads / RedheadedHero: Red hair is a Tully trait, and most of its members are considered attractive.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Catelyn was the Responsible to Edmure/Lysa's Foolish.
* TheLancer: To House Stark in the War of the Five Kings.
* MeaningfulName: Tully means "flood" in Irish Gaelic.
* VikingFuneral: They bury their dead this way. It makes sense as the Riverlands used to be under Ironborn control.

!!Lord Hoster Tully

-->''"Did you see me, little Cat?"''

The patriarch of the Tully family, who starts the series on his deathbed.
----
* DyingClue: [[spoiler: Hoster's last word is "Tansy," which turns out to mean that he forced his daughter Lysa to drink tansy tea (an abortive drug) after he found out that she was pregnant with Littlefinger's child. Lysa and Littlefinger have been lovers since the first book... which is why Lysa was the one who killed Jon Arryn and blamed the Lannisters at Littlefinger's insistence.]]
* TheMourningAfter: Catelyn notes that some of the life had gone out of Hoster after Minisa's death.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler: Hoster Tully goes to his grave regretting that he tricked Lysa in aborting Littlefinger's child.]]
* VikingFuneral: In the third book.

!!Minisa Tully (née Whent)

Hoster's deceased wife.
----
* DeathByChildbirth: She died giving birth to her fourth child (who died as well), which prompted Catelyn's PromotionToParent.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: According to Catelyn, although she doesn't remember much.

!!Lord Edmure Tully
--> "He would try to hold every inch of his soil, to defend every man, woman and child who named him lord."
-->-- '''Eddard Stark'''

Hoster's only son and heir, and younger brother to Catelyn and Lysa. Becomes Lord of Riverrun after his father's death in the third book. Edmure is a kind-hearted man whose strengths unfortunately lie in peacetime politics rather than wartime strategy.
----
* ButtMonkey: Edmure is the butt-monkey of the Tully family itself. The poor guy can't even take a bath without somebody threatening to put his baby in a catapult.
* FieryRedhead
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Foolish to Catelyn's Responsible; she notes in ''AStormOfSwords'' that this had gone on since childhood.
* GeneralFailure: Unlike his uncle the Blackfish, he is a hot-headed incompetent who either loses battles or walks his men right into enemy traps. And the one time he wins, it's by haring off to fight a battle on his own initiative, and it ends up ''seriously'' screwing with his side's long-term plans, which he may not have even been in on in the first place.
* GoodIsDumb / IdiotHero
* HotBlooded
* TheMillstone
* NiceGuy: Other characters note that despite Edmure not being a great tactician, he would make an excellent lord in peacetime since he does truly care for his smallfolk.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Edmure Tully, who may have to fight a war out of his castle, nonetheless allows starving refugees to take shelter there. "Because they are my people, and they are afraid". Gemma Frey describes him as "soft of heart and soft of head."
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Despite how the wedding itself turned out, it seems that [[spoiler: Edmure and his wife, Roslin Frey]] do genuinely love each other. [[spoiler: Edmure expresses extreme relief when Jamie promises him in AFFC that after she gives birth, Roslin and their child will join him at Casterly Rock. It's said that Roslin prays every day for a daughter so Edmure won't be killed by her family - the birth of a Tully/Frey son and heir means they would have no use for him anymore.]]
* PyrrhicVictory: Edmure wins a battle that severely hampers his side's war effort.
* UpperClassTwit: Edmure has some shades of this. He's not a bad person, but his priorities are typically misplaced, leading him to do the wrong thing at the wrong time. (The filling-his-castle-with-refugees thing is dumb because winning a siege typically depends on whether you have more food and less mouths than the enemy. Note that the only two StormingTheCastle moments we have ''ever'' seen have resulted in the leaders of those two attempts--[[spoiler:Robb Stark and Loras Tyrell]]--taking significant injury.)
* WellDoneSonGuy: Downplayed. Edmure's family does love him a lot (and he ''is'' an only son) but Catelyn mentions that he does desire glory beyond being heir to Riverrun and would love for his father to be really proud of him.

!!Brynden "The Blackfish" Tully

Hoster's unmarried younger brother and uncle to Catelyn, Lysa, and Edmure, the Blackfish serves as a capable warrior and much-needed voice of reason.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: The Blackfish will never marry a woman, per Cat's words. Some fans wonder...
* AppropriatedAppellation: Hoster Tully once cursed his younger brother for being the [[BlackSheep "Black Goat"]] of the family. Brynden just laughed and wondered whether, the Tully sigil being what it is, he should be considered a black ''fish'' instead? And that's how Brynden Tully got his nickname (not to mention his personal coat-of-arms).
* BadassGrandpa: The Blackfish is 60 years old at the start of the series and still a highly capable warrior. [[spoiler: Even after surrendering Riverrun to Jaime Lannister, he manages to escape by swimming under the portcullis - raised just below the water level - and then swimming for some miles. In the middle of the frikkin night]].
** His ReasonYouSuckSpeech to Jaime is pretty BadAss in itself, if not a bit of a KickTheDog moment given [[spoiler: Jaime's character development over the past few books]].
* BigOlEyebrows
* BlackSheep: Brynden's refusal to marry a woman who would help his family's fortune is a contrast to their words promoting Family and Duty. Arguing with his brother over this led to the Brynden's long estrangement from Hoster and the rest of his family. His refusal to serve his family, combined with an insult Hoster aimed at him, [[AppropriatedAppellation led to Brynden adopting the name, the Blackfish]]. In the series proper, he's quite dutiful to his family and returns to help with the war efforts when his niece, Lysa, refuses to do so.
* ColonelBadass: As one of Robb's top commanders.
* CoolUncle
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When Lysa refuses to assist the Riverlands when they come under attack by the Lannister's, Brynden quits his position as Knight of the Gate and joins Catelyn in rushing to join Robb.

!!Roslin Tully (née Frey)

When Robb Stark forewent his betrothal to a Frey daughter, choosing to save Jeyne Westerling's honor instead, the Freys are understandably unhappy but agree to continue the alliance if Edmure weds a Frey girl in Robb's place. Roslin herself, a surprisingly sweet, gentle girl then marries Edmure in Jeyne and Robb's stead.
----
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: To Edmure, see his entry.
* NiceGirl: A rarity among her family.
* TokenGoodTeammate: To the Freys.
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter

[[folder:House Arryn]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/got_-_house_arryn_01_9608.png

-> "''As High As Honor''"
--> - '''Arryn House Words'''

Lords of Mountain and Vale, their seat, the Eyrie, is built at the top of a mountaintop so steep that (primitive) elevators are used to ascend to it. Their most recent lord, Jon Arryn, was foster-father to two young boys of other families - Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon. Jon, a StraightMan of the highest caliber, later served as Robert's Hand Of The King until his [[PosthumousCharacter death prior to the opening of the series]]. His young trophy wife, [[MamaBear Lysa Arryn]], has since returned to the Vale with her husband's palsied, pansied little son Robert. Their sigil is a moon and falcon.

!!Tropes relating to the Arryns:
* DeathByChildbirth: Jon Arryn's first wife, sister, and two of his nieces died this way.
* DeathMountain: Why the Vale is impossible to conquer.
* EveryoneWentToSchoolTogether: Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark grew up as fast friends in the Eyrie, with Lord Jon as (essentially) the schoolteacher.
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Alys Arryn had nine children with her Waynwood husband. All of them met bad ends.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Denys Arryn.
* TeamSwitzerland: In the War of the Five Kings, by Lysa's own paranoia. This works out well for the Vale, as they are one of the only armies in Westeros that hasn't been decimated by war.

!!Lord Jon Arryn

The Hand of the King preceding Eddard, who was a father figure to him and Robert during their fostering in the Vale and served as TheGoodChancellor to Robert. His assassination at the beginning of the book sparks a chain of events that eventually lead to the start of the civil war.
----
* BadassGrandpa: During Robert's Rebellion.
* TheConsigliere / TheGoodChancellor: To Robert.
* DyingClue: Jon Arryn's last words, "the seed is strong," meaning [[spoiler:all Baratheons in history have had the trademark black hair and blue eyes ''except'' for Cersei's childen.]]
* HeirClubForMen: Jon had two wives before Lysa, but neither was able to provide him with an heir. So he [[LikeASonToMe tried to adopt one instead]], asking the various houses for spare sons they could loan him--such as Robert and Ned. Finally he took Lysa to wife because of the promise of fertility ([[spoiler:she and Littlefinger had surreptitiously conceived a child, which her father Hoster had aborted]]), and she gave us Robert.
** Before his marriage to Lysa, both of his heirs were killed: His nephew Elbert was executed by the Mad King in King's Landing; then his cousin/nephew Ser Denys Arryn was killed during Robert's Rebellion.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Jon must have been one to an extent; he did put Janos Slynt in his position of power and probably never realized how obsessed with Littlefinger his wife was.
* NumberTwo: Jon Arryn was this to Robert as Hand of the King.
* PapaWolf: Jon Arryn would rather start up a rebellion against an insane king than let said insane king kill his two young wards.
* ParentalSubstitute: Jon Arryn was a mentor and second father to both Ned and Robert when they were being fostered at the Eyrie.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: Jon's assassination [[spoiler:at Lysa's hand]] is what led to King Robert naming Ned Hand of the King. It all goes down hill from there.
* PosthumousCharacter.
* RedHerring: [[spoiler:Jon's death has nothing to do with Joffrey being incest born.]]

!!Robert Arryn
-->"I want to see him fly!"

Jon and Lysa's much-wanted son, now Lord of the Vale after his father's death.
----
* IllBoy
* InUniverseNickname: "Sweetrobin."
* KidsAreCruel: His quote references him enjoying people thrown out the Moon Door.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: Inverted. He breastfeeds at the age of ''six''.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Immediately latches on to [[spoiler:Sansa after Lysa's death.]]

!!Lysa Tully Arryn
-->"I've always loved you. I've proved it, haven't I?"

Younger sister to Catelyn, older sister to Edmure, and mother to little Robert Arryn, Lysa was married to Jon Arryn during Robert's Rebellion to secure the Tullys' loyalty. She's more than a bit unhappy about that.
----
* BedTrick: Lysa pulled one on Littlefinger. [[spoiler:He thought it was Cat in his bed, which is why he boasts of taking her maidenhead and is one of the reasons Lysa resents her sister.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: Lysa [[spoiler:tries to murder her niece because Littlefinger hit on her.]]
* DirtyCoward
-->'''Catelyn:''' Lysa was never brave. When we were girls together, she would run and hide whenever she’d done something wrong. Perhaps she thought our lord father would forget to be wroth with her if he could not find her. It is no different now. She ran from King’s Landing for fear, to the safest place she knows, and she sits on her mountain hoping everyone will forget her.
* FatIdiot: Lysa really let herself go after becoming Lady of the Eyrie, both physically and mentally.
* {{Foil}}: Lysa can be seen as one to Sansa. [[spoiler: Both started out as [[WideEyedIdealist Wide-Eyed Idealists]] and fell in love with the wrong sort of guy. Sansa quickly realizes that her beloved isn't who he pretends to be, but Lysa doesn't until a few seconds before her death.]]
* [[spoiler: GoodGirlsAvoidAbortion: Inverted, when Hoster Tully found out that Lysa had become pregnant with Petyr Baelish' child he tricked her into aborting it]].
* IWasQuiteALooker: Lysa was pretty when she was younger.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Lysa leaves the Eyrie by the Moon Door, her own favorite execution method]].
* LoveMakesYouCrazy [=/=] MadLove: [[spoiler:Lysa is madly in love with Littlefinger, and entirely blind to the fact that she's just another pawn to him.]]
* MamaBear: Lysa [[spoiler:murdered Jon Arryn because Littlefinger told her Jon was planning on sending her son away]]. This is kind of understandable because of how many miscarriages she's had and [[spoiler:her father forcing her to abort her first child, which caused the unlikeliness of her to have children]].
* MeaningfulName: [[spoiler:"Lysis" refers to the breakdown of a cell.]]
* MiddleChildSyndrome: Lysa is implied to have had this when she was younger - she did, after all, have to contend with her older sister [[ParentalSubstitute Catelyn]] and her younger brother [[HeirClubForMen Edmure]] when she was younger.
* MyBelovedSmother: Lysa is creepily over-protective of her kid. She ''breast-feeds'' him at the age of six.
* PsychopathicWomanChild: Lysa, who throws tantrums like a spoiled child and ignores her responsibilities as Lady of the Eyrie in hopes that they will simply ''go away.''
* UglyGuyHotWife: Lysa initially felt this way about her and Jon.
* TheUnfavourite: Lysa compared to Edmure and Catelyn. Even Jaime Lannister, during his brief visit to Riverrun when he was younger, thought Catelyn was more interesting even though he could have been betrothed to Lysa.
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend[=/=]VictoriousChildhoodFriend: {{zigzagged}} trope. Littlefinger loved Catelyn, who [[AllLoveIsUnrequited did not love him back]]. Lysa loved Littlefinger, who [[AllLoveIsUnrequited did not love her back]], but eventually he came around and married her. Of course, as it turns out, this was just another move in the game to Littlefinger. [[spoiler:In fact, he kills her himself... after telling her that he has only ever loved one woman. "[[AlasPoorScrappy Only Cat]]."]]
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Catelyn remembers Lysa and Petyr as [[CheerfulChild Cheerful Children]] and [[WideEyedIdealist Wide Eyed Idealists]] before they both got broken.
* {{Yandere}}: Both Lysa and Petyr.

!'''Major Vassal Houses'''
These houses (called "bannermen") are powerful, but rule over smaller lands and have sworn fealty to one of the Great Houses rather than the King directly.

!!The North
[[folder: House Bolton]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/house-bolton-001_7844.png

-> ''"Our blades are sharp."''
--> - '''Bolton House words''' according to WordOfGod

Based in the appropriately named [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Dreadfort]], the Boltons are largely the TokenEvilTeammate and PsychoForHire of House Stark and their most powerful bannermen. Centuries ago they used to be TheRival to the Starks in dominace over the North. They have a morbid practice of skinning their enemies and displaying all their skins in the Dreadfort, a castle on the brinks of the Weeping Water with legendary torture chambers. The "Leech Lord" Roose Bolton is the head of the house, which seems to consist only of him, his bastard son Ramsay, and his overweight wife Fat Walda. They have icily pale eyes and their sigil is a red flayed man on a pink field, and their house words ([[WordOfGod as revealed by GRRM]]) are, "Our blades are sharp."

!!!Tropes:
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: To the point that fans asked Martin about the possibility of a Bolton character who wasn't a total psycho. The family has a terrible reputation in-universe and out, and while the deceased Domeric was supposedly a decent guy, of the living Boltons, Roose is heavily hinted to be a cold psychopath, Walda was at the very least complicit in "wedding planning", and Ramsay is... well, Ramsay.
* AscendedMeme: In-universe, a common saying among Boltons and their sworn men is that "a flayed man holds no secrets."
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: This seems to be the "hat" for the Boltons ("''Our Blades Are Sharp''", anyone??). Roose at least considers the pros and cons first. Ramsay, on the other hand, will do it because he can't really control himself (see StupidEvil below). [[spoiler: During the war Roose betrays the Starks and assists the Freys and Lannisters in orchestrating the "Red Wedding," where he murders Robb himself.]]
* CreepySouvenir: The Boltons allegedly keep the skins of those whom they've flayed at the Dreadfort, including several former Kings in the North.
* TheDreaded
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Both Roose and Ramsay swap out regular garb to don their imposing DarkIsEvil suits of armour during the series. Ramsay's in particular is described as terrifying.
* FantasyCounterpartCulture: Not a straight example at all, but their taste for flaying reminds one of the Aztec cult of Xipe Totec,with a mix of Vlad Tepes and Gilles de Rais,Roose would be a more pragmatic version of Tepes ,and Ramsay would be a mix of the worst characteristics of both historical figures.
* FlayingAlive: Their traditional execution method. Roose apparently does it as a punishment, while Ramsay does it for fun.
* GenuineHumanHide: Associated with this. In fact, older Bolton lords were said to wear cloaks of human skin. When Ramsay tells his dad he wants to make boots out of human leather, his father is horrified, but not for the obvious reason. He knows from experience that human leather is too thin and weak for such purposes!
* IDontLikeTheSoundOfThatPlace: Their ancestral home is called [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast "The Dreadfort"]].
* NotSoDifferent: The fact that they're just as monstrous as Gregor Clegane, and begin the war [[TokenEvilTeammate on the side of the protagonists]], indicates that there are no [[GrayAndGrayMorality purely]] [[BlackAndGrayMorality good]] guys in this series.
* ObviouslyEvil: They live in a place called The Dreadfort. Their sigil is a ''flayed man''. What about that says "trustworthy"? Although Ramsay's... weird tendencies at least seem to be an open secret in the North. Although they do start out on the "good" side.
* RealMenWearPink: Their colors are pink and red, the colors of a flayed man.
* RedOniBlueOni: Hot-blooded, impulsive id-monster Ramsay; and his cold, calculating and seemingly emotionless father Roose.
* TheRival: To House Stark, in times past. House Bolton was House Stark's chief competitor for supremacy in the North but the Starks eventually won out and made the Boltons their vassals. Now [[spoiler: House Bolton rules the North.]]
* [[spoiler:TheStarscream: To House Stark.]]
* TokenEvilTeammate: The house functions as one to the Starks, before [[spoiler:their betrayal and rise to power.]]
* TortureTechnician: Seems to be the hat worn by their entire house.

!!Lord Roose Bolton
-->"Fear is what keeps a man alive in this world of treachery and deceit."

The patient, calculating, cruel Lord of the Dreadfort and current head of House Bolton. He is fond of leeching himself, believing that it improves his health.
----
* AffablyEvil
* {{Badass}}: Has seen battles without suffering any scars, not to mention keeping such psychos as [[SociopathicSoldier Vargo Hoat]] and his [[AxCrazy own son]] in check.
** BadassBoast: "I am not a man to be undone, ser."
** BadassCape: Played with. It's pink and not particularly imposing, but no one dares to comment on it.
** CulturedBadass
* BetterTheDevilYouKnow: Several northerners are content with having Roose as a liege lord on this principle, having experienced far worse rulers. See the VillainWithGoodPublicity quote below.
* BookBurning: Another of Roose Bolton's quirks is that after reading any book or letter he throws it on the fire.
* BreadEggsMilkSquick: Roose Bolton telling Theon how he fathered Ramsay Snow. He was out fox-hunting when he came across a comely maid who had married without letting him, as her liege lord, invoke his right of "first night". In the end, he says, the fox got away, his favorite horse came up lame and had to be put down, and ''the woman he raped wasn't nearly as good a lay as he'd hoped'', which made for a pretty lousy day in the end.
* CaptainErsatz: Roose is pretty much a LowFantasy version of {{Dracula}} (except he bleeds himself with leeches rather than drinking others blood) while Ramsay being an open psychopath fascinated with a gruesome form of execution reminds of Dracula's purported historical inspiration, Vlad III of Wallachia. The Dreadfort's long history as a rival, then restive vassal ([[spoiler:who ends pulling TheStarscream and allying with the southern enemy of its overlord]]) of the North also mirrors Wallachia's relationship with Hungary and its policy around the time of Vlad III's father's reign, Vlad II, in particular. To top it off, Vlad III was [[BastardBastard possibly ilegitimate]], and definitely not a son by any of Vlad II's first wives, making him as much an UnexpectedSuccessor as Ramsay is of Roose.
* TheChessmaster
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: As opposed to Tywin Lannister, nothing is ever said or sung about Roose's ruthlessness, and it makes him really happy. [[AxCrazy Ramsay, on the other hand...]]
** Not to mention that when Bolton remarried, to a daughter of House Frey, the Late Lord Walder offered him his bride's weight in silver as a dowry. Accordingly, [[ExactWords Roose grabbed the heaviest daughter he could find]].
** Also, ADWD shows that when he is at a feast with Wyman Manderly, Roose only eats from dishes or drinks from pitchers that he has seen Manderly try first. Since just about everyone else considers Manderly a FatIdiot, [[spoiler: which is how he is able to get away with his own schemes]], this further emphasises how careful Roose is.
* DeadpanSnarker: Roose has his moments of sardonic wit.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: After his men hunt some wolves, including pups, Roose orders some gloves made from the pups' fur.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite being sociopathically cruel, Roose refuses to engage in kinslaying. This sole standard explains why Roose hasn't killed Ramsay despite the difficulties his son's cruelties have caused him. This trait isn't shared by Ramsay though, since he most likely murdered his legitimate brother to become the sole heir to his house.
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: Roose has creepy "pale" eyes. When casually discussing the moment a woman he raped came to him claiming she'd bore his bastard child, Roose admitted the moment he saw those same eyes staring back at him, he accepted Ramsay was his son.
* KarmaHoudini: Roose is now the most powerful man in the North.
* LackOfEmpathy: Roose seems utterly incapable of forming connections with people, at his most gracious treating someone with fond amusement. He's devoid of emotion when recounting the murder of his son Domeric and while stating the likelihood that Ramsay will kill any other trueborn children he has.
* ManipulativeBastard: Roose is certainly very good at this, and Ramsay plays [[spoiler: Theon]] like a harp while he's in disguise. A crucial difference is that Ramsay's sadistic psychopathic tendencies make him impulsive and prone to shooting himself in the foot. Roose has no such weakness.
* NoMrBondIExpectYouToDine: Roose pulls this on [[spoiler: Jaime and Brienne]] at Harrenhall. With the former, Roose is trying to make absolutely sure that [[spoiler: Jaime]] will make it clear to his father that Roose was not responsible for the loss of his hand. With the latter, he is simply providing a nice meal and a courteous welcome to Harrenhall before telling her that he's leaving her to the [[PsychoForHire the Bloody Mummers]].
* PetTheDog: Roose claims to be quite fond of Fat Walda. (Although, since he was saying as such to Theon, it's uncertain how sincere he was being.) He also did seem to love his legitimate son Domeric, and tried to warn him that riding off to go make friends with his psycho half-brother was a bad idea.
* PragmaticVillainy: One of Roose's catchphrases is "A peaceful land, a quiet people." Roose doesn't care that Ramsay is cruel, since Roose himself just as cruel, but rather that his son lacks any discretion regarding his cruelty. [[spoiler: He especially dislikes Ramsay's actions toward Fake Arya, who is the key to maintaining Bolton control over the North.]]
* ProperlyParanoid: Roose always minimizes any chances of being harmed. While traveling through the Neck on the return north, Roose uses a decoy and travels in a litter because he did not trust the crannogmen in the area. Roose also points out that "fear is what keeps a man alive in this world", and that he is ProperlyParanoid of all his bannermen.
* RapeAndRevenge: A possible example; Roose paid off the mother after raping her on condition she not tell anyone Ramsey was his bastard. Instead she told Ramsey who his real father was and that he had the 'right' to be his heir. Ramsey ends up poisoning Bolton's natural son to ensure this.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Roose is always very polite and speaks softly to the point people have to strain to hear him- but they always listen, since people know not to cross him. [[spoiler: Theon/Reek]] remembers in ADWD that he used to sneer at Roose for his quiet voice, and berates himself for his stupidity in not noticing this fact.
* TheStoic: Roose Bolton never raises his voice, forcing others to shut up and listen, and always acts calm and cool.
* StraightEdgeEvil: The "evil" part should be obvious by now, but Roose Bolton also has himself regularly bled by leeches because he believes it cleanses his system and removes bad humors. He drinks hippocras rather than wine because it improves digestion and eats prunes for much the same reason. All told, he's the closest thing the setting has to a health nut.
* TheyLookJustLikeEveryoneElse: Other than his eyes, Roose has an entirely mundane appearance.
* TranquilFury: Difficult to tell with Roose. He never raises his voice or shows actual anger, but on a few occasions he makes it clear that he's displeased, (normally when some potentially disastrous situation has emerged that would make most people furious). Whether he is genuinely angry and is just very good at controlling it, or whether he is incapable of feeling anything stronger than a mild displeasure is currently unknown.
** Worth noting that even after everything he's been through by that point, the thing that *really* scares the crap out of Jaime is the way that Roose Bolton goes quiet after Jaime lets slip one of those poorly timed, ill-conceived one-liners that seem to be a Lannister curse.
* UriahGambit: Roose Bolton does this with a skill verging on MagnificentBastard status. [[spoiler:From the moment he realises that Robb Stark can't win the war, Roose starts whittling down the forces under his command by placing them in situations where they'll be cut off and destroyed by Lannister forces. By the time of the Red Wedding, only his own men and the Karstarks are left.]] In ''ADWD'', faced with the Freys and Manderly at each other's throats and potentially plotting treason, he sends then out into the snow to fight the forces of King Stannis, while keeping his own men safe in Winterfell.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Sort of. While few of the Northern lords actually love him and several are quite scared of him, it seems nobody knows it was Roose the one who personally [[spoiler:killed Robb, and blame the Freys for the Wedding.]]
** Roose's motto of ""A peaceful land, a quiet people" aims at achieving this status.
--> "Roose Bolton's cold and cunning, aye, but a man can deal with Roose. We've all known worse. But this bastard son of his...they say he's [[TortureTechnician mad]] and [[ForTheEvulz cruel]], a monster."

!!Ramsay Snow / Ramsay Bolton
-->"The Boltons have always been as cruel as they are cunning, but this one seems a beast in human skin."
--->--'''Robett Glover'''

Roose's legitimized bastard son, Ramsay is a sadistic, savage man who takes great pleasure in the suffering of others. Widely considered to be one of the most (if not ''the'' most) despicable characters in the entire series, which is [[CrapsackWorld really saying something]].
----
* AndNowYouMustMarryMe: How his first marriage went down. He forced himself on the widowed Lady Hornwood in order to claim her lands; when the deed was done, he locked her in a tower, in which she was so deprived of food that she [[DisposableWoman bit her own fingers off before dying]].
* AmbitionIsEvil: Roose believes his son's StartOfDarkness occurred the day he became discontent with a humble peasant's life.
* AxCrazy: Sadistic, capricious, and [[TheButcher mows down men wielding his sword like a butcher's cleaver]].
* BaitAndSwitchBoss: As the Prince of Winterfell and Rodrik Cassel experienced the hard way.
* BastardBastard: A modern TropeCodifier.
* BerserkButton: Reminding Ramsay of his baseborn status is a good way to end up short a head. [[ColdbloodedTorture Or worse]].
* BestialityIsDepraved: He was apparently in the process of forcing his [[spoiler:terrified new wife]] to perform sex acts on one of his dogs. Thankfully, [[spoiler:she escaped.]]
* BiTheWay: or possibly AmbiguouslyGay, in the most [[DepravedBisexual depraved sense of the way]]. It's strongly implied that he rapes women regularly but his relationship with both Reeks is ''filled'' with 100% Nightmare inducing sexual undertones.
* CainAndAbel: Domeric and Ramsay. Domeric wanted to befriend Ramsay; Ramsay quite probably poisoned him.
* ChildByRape
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Unapologetically so.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: He pretends to be [[spoiler:Reek, his slain serving man.]]
* DomesticAbuser: Ye gods, is he a terrifyingly abusive husband. Poor [[spoiler:Jeyne.]]
* DiabolusExMachina: When Ramsay triumphs at the end of ''A Clash of Kings'', despite all odds being against him. His meteoric rise to power also [[IncrediblyLamePun reeks]] of this trope. From being a lowly bastard son, all the way to [[spoiler: Lord of Winterfell and the next Warden of the North.]]
** However, it is quite possible he will fall just as quickly: it is well known in the North that he's a psychopath, and the sobs of his wife [[spoiler: who everyone believes is Arya Stark]] can be heard throughout the castle. Roose might be able to hold it together, but if he slips up or Roose dies, Ramsay will be torn apart by the Northmen themselves.
*** Or alternatively, [[PragmaticVillainy Roose]] will finally decide that [[StupidEvil Ramsay]] is more trouble than he's worth, and will kill him himself. The only thing staying his hand, for now, is the taboo of kinslaying.
* TheDragon: He sees himself as this to Roose, but Roose doesn't think particularly highly of him and uses his son's "talents" to better serve their House as TheBrute.
* TheDreaded: Ramsay is widely feared throughout the north, a fact he's quite proud of. Roose, on the other hand, believes this reputation is a detrimental thing.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Subverted. He wears his hair long, garbs himself in splendorous clothing with a penchant for pink, and often sports an earring (the text also places a lot of emphasis on his lips), but is described as a somewhat ugly young man in spite of it all.
** The first Reek tried it too, going as far as to wear [[HairDecorations flowers]] in his hair.
* EmbarrassingNickname: The "Bastard of Bolton." Embarrassing for Ramsay, at least, who despises the fact that he's a bastard.
* EnfantTerrible: He was apparently a troublemaker as a child, growing up so wild and unruly that his mother demanded help raising him. What she got was a necrophiliac rapist named Reek, whom Ramsay managed to befriend and then cow into complete obedience in short order.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Subtly implied. Ramsay speaks highly of his mother, referring to her relationship with Roose as a poetic and LoveAtFirstSight kind of romance. In reality, Roose raped her on a whim, was disappointed by how poor of a lay she was, and didn't think she was all that attractive in the first place.
** Roose believes that Ramsay's mother, while troubled by Ramsay growing up "wild and unruly," eventually came to encourage his heinous behaviour and spur him forward to claim his "rights" from Roose.
* EvilCounterpart: Ramsay to Jon Snow: Both bastards, both resentful of their status. Both at some point dream of being their fathers' heirs. Both befriended by their trueborn half-brothers. Jon befriended Robb; Ramsay quite possibly poisoned Domeric.
* EvilGloating: He's fond of this.
* EvilMentor: Ramsay is this to Little and Big Walder Frey, the former of whom [[spoiler:was]] well on his way to becoming Ramsay the Second.
* FalseFriend: To Theon in ''Clash of Kings''. His Bastard's Boys are this to ''him'', apparently reporting back to Roose.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Occasionally lapses into this. It never lasts.
* FlayingAlive: A hallmark of House Bolton, though Ramsay's penchant for it deserves special mention.
* ForTheEvulz: Ramsay's motivation for torturing people.
* FromNobodyToNightmare
* GenuineHumanHide: [[spoiler: He sends Asha Greyjoy a patch of her brother's skin and claims to have made Mance Rayder a cloak from the skin of his six spearwife companions.]]
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: One of Ramsay's "hobbies". It should be noted this trope is in name only: he hunts naked, terrified, exhausted women, and he has the help of a pack of dogs. Sounds fair, right?
* IdentityAmnesia: Ramsay tries to pull this on [[spoiler:Theon and Jeyne Poole]] through physical, mental, and emotional abuse.
* IdiotBall: Ramsay can't stop mistreating people he needs, such as [[spoiler:the fake Arya, who is necessary to win him the North. This does nothing for the relations with the other houses, as [[GenreSavvy Lady Dustin and his father]] point out.]] Justified, as he is a SerialKiller, so being able to keep his sadistic impulses in check is obviously not his strong point.
* InadequateInheritor: Roose believes him to be this.
* InThatOrder: One of Ramsay's favourite past times is to strip women naked, turn them out into the woods, give them a headstart, then hunt them down with his hounds and rape them. If they put up a fight and give him some entertainment, he'll cut their throats ''before'' he flays them and names one of his newborn ''bitches'' after the victim. If they don't, [[FateWorseThanDeath he does it the other way round.]]
* KarmaHoudini: Ramsay being alive and [[spoiler:heir to Winterfell]] also counts. [[spoiler: Especially if you believe his final raven to Jon]].
* MercyKill: He killed a dying Luton this way.
* MonsterKnight: His suit of armour was designed to invoke this, depicting a bloody flayed man howling in anguish.
* MoodSwinger: Overlaps with HairTriggerTemper.
* OverlordJr: He fancies himself as this.
* PetTheDog: Subverted, with an ironic twist; if a woman gives Ramsay enough... sport, he'll name a bitch after her.
** Ramsay's relationship with the first Reek might also give off this vibe; while he was quite willing to [[spoiler: let the real Reek get killed in his place,]] the lengths to which he goes to recreate Reek [[spoiler: in Theon]] might suggest something beyond simple sadism, degradation and domination. Whether Ramsay is capable of affection on some level, or whether it's just some disturbing obsession he has (one of several) is difficult to know.
** Ramsay's attitude towards his little Frey squires qualifies. He seems terribly incensed when [[spoiler: Little Walder is murdered, and offers to flay whoever was responsible.]]
* PersonalMook: Ramsay's original sidekick was a necrophiliac rapist named Reek, who was almost as depraved as Ramsay himself.
* ReminiscingAboutYourVictims: What his practice of naming dogs after women he's brutally raped and murdered seems based on.
* {{Sadist}}: A bit of an understatement.
* SerialKiller
* TheSociopath: Ramsay is a full-blown serial killing psychopath.
* TheStarscream: [[spoiler: "Reek" (actually Ramsay Snow) pulls a Starscream twice in the same battle. First to Ser Rodrik and the northern forces trying to reclaim Winterfell, and then on Theon. Months later, Roose pulls a Starscream by setting up the Red Wedding, where he personally kills Robb.]]
** Ramsay doesn't really trust his father, and instructs Reek to "tell him nothing" and to report back everything Roose has said. Whether he has any deeper intentions with this mindset is unclear.
* StupidEvil: Ramsay is very much this, fully indulging his sadistic urges and not caring about the effect this has on his House's reputation. [[PragmaticVillainy Roose does not appreciate this.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: He may incline to StupidEvil, but he's very good at thinking on his feet and has pretty incredible survival skills. See his DeadPersonImpersonation stunt for a fairly horrific example: he evaded near-certain death, sent his partner-in-crime off to die in his place, befriended the new ruler of [[spoiler:Winterfell, and secured his own safe escape from the castle when the tide turned unfavourably--only to come back at the head of an army, betray both Theon and the northern forces, take down a force in the thousands losing only "twenty or thirty" men of his own, and then burn Winterfell to the ground, taking a royal captive in the process.]]
** In ''The Winds of Winter'', [[spoiler:Theon advises Stannis not to underestimate Ramsay, ensuring the king that he "doesn't know" what the Bastard of Bolton is capable of.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: Would flay and kill them, too.

!!Walda Bolton, nee Frey

Roose Bolton's third and current wife.
----
* BigFun: Seems to be this among her family, since Walda's first on-page appearance was cracking bawdy jokes at Edmure's expense.
* FatGirl: [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Fat Walda]].
* GlurgeAddict: Her sugary-sweet gushing over Roose Bolton seems to indicate this.
* HappilyMarried: Walda seems to be genuinely happy with her husband, even though he doesn't reciprocate this.
* MoralityPet: Almost, but not quite. Roose says that he is "strangely fond" of Fat Walda in the fifth book; although he certainly doesn't ''love'' her, or anyone else, this probably is the closest to affection that Roose can feel for another person.
* OddCouple: Giggly, fun-loving, over-eating Walda and emotionless, cold-blooded, health-nut Roose Bolton.
* OldManMarryingAChild: Roose isn't ''old'', but he's well into his middle years and Walda is but fifteen.

!!Domeric Bolton

Roose Bolton's only trueborn child, Domeric was a quiet but accomplished man who died two years before the events of the series.
----
* AcademicAthlete: He was both a well-read young man and an accomplished, passionate horse rider, on par with Lyanna Stark.
* CainAndAbel: Abel to Ramsay's Cain: he wanted to befriend Ramsay, Ramsay probably poisoned him.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Was apparently this.

!!Reek

A serving man of House Bolton, he'd go on to become Ramsay's childhood friend and future partner-in-crime. He was afflicted with a disease that caused him to smell terribly, hence his nickname. He wasn't happy about this, and went to lengths to try and cure himself (including stealing the late Lady Bolton's perfume), to no avail. He was [[spoiler:the first of three people to operate under the alias of Reek: Ramsay impersonated him after his death, and later "recreated" Reek in a physically and emotionally broken Theon Greyjoy.]]
----
* [[spoiler:DeadPersonImpersonation: Ramsay pretends to be him after his death.]]
* EvilDuo: With Ramsay.
* EvilMentor: To Ramsay. Apparently, at least: as it turns out, Ramsay cowed him into complete obedience, to the point where he'd run off to near-certain death on Ramsay's command.
** He also taught Ramsay how to fight, explaining his AxCrazy style of swordsmanship.
* HairDecorations: He was obsessed with cleanliness, bathed often, stole perfume, and wore flowers in his hair.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Ramsay were apparently as thick as thieves, sharing in the joys of sowing terror everywhere they went. [[spoiler:Filling the void is probably why Ramsay made a new Reek.]]
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: Like Ramsay, he was fond of running down peasant girls. He'd have his turn with their corpses after Ramsay had raped and killed them.
* ILoveTheDead: He was a necrophiliac, though he apparently also "liked them warm."
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: It's vaguely mentioned that his given name may be "Heke," but he's only ever referred to as Reek.
* PosthumousCharacter: Dies off-page before we ever meet him, and is [[spoiler:impersonated by Ramsay.]] Later, he's horrifically [[spoiler:recreated in Theon.]]

[[folder:House Cassel]]

A small Northern house in service to the Starks, residing with them in Winterfell.

!!Ser Rodrik Cassel

The castellan and master-at-arms for House Stark at their stronghold of Winterfell.
----
* BadassGrandpa: He's a tough old cuss.
* BadassBeard: Big, bushy white sideburns. [[spoiler: When he goes with Catelyn to King's Landing he decides to shave them off so no one would recognize him, and so he wouldn't have to keep cleaning them because he was constantly puking on the sea voyage there]].
* [[spoiler: CavalryBetrayal: The cause of his death. He's away from Winterfell when Theon captures it with his small force of Ironmen, and he rallies the North to retake the castle. A force of Bolton men led by Roose Bolton's illegitimate son Ramsay Snow join up with them within sight of Winterfell's walls. Rodrik reaches to shake Ramsay's hand and gets a sword in reply]].
* [[spoiler: CharacterDeath: Killed by Ramsey Snow when welcoming Bolton forces to the siege of the Ironborn at Winterfell, with one of his arms being cut off when reaching out to shake his hand]].
* CynicismCatalyst: He's seen a lot of loss during his life, but [[TheStoic doesn't complain about it]].
-->'''Maester Luwin (to Bran Stark):''' One day you will be a good lord for Winterfell, I think.
-->'''Bran:''': No I won't. Robb's to marry some Frey girl, you told me so yourself, and the Walders say the same. He'll have sons, and they'll be the lords of Winterfell after him, not me.
-->'''Ser Rodrik:''' It may be so, Bran, but I was wed three times and my wives gave me daughters. Now only Beth remains to me. My brother Martyn fathered four strong sons, yet only Jory lived to be a man. When he was slain, Martyn's line died with him. When we speak of the morrow nothing is ever certain.
* OldMaster: Being the master-at-arms, he's responsible for drilling and training the Stark soldiers at Winterfell.
* OldRetainer: He's served House Stark his whole life.
* StayInTheKitchen: Discussed and inverted. He expresses distaste at ''men'' doing things he sees as being for women, particularly singing.
* StoutStrength: He's described as having the build of a keg.
* StrokeTheBeard: Often tugs at his sideburns during conversation.

!!Jory Cassel

Captain of Winterfell's Guard, nephew of Ser Rodrik Cassel, and the last surviving son of Martyn Cassel. He accompanied Lord Eddard Stark to King's Landing, where he was killed by Jamie Lannister's men.
----
* {{Badass}}: In the tourney held for Ned being appointed Hand of the King, Jory unseats his first two opponents in the joust before losing. When ambushed by Lannister men, he kills a few of them before being killed.
* TheCaptain: Of Ned's house guard.
* CharacterDeath: Killed by Jamie Lannister's men alongside two other Stark guards as a warning to Ned after Catelyn kidnapped Tyrion Lannister.
* TheLancer: To Ned in King's Landing, carrying out a lot of the legwork in the investigation into Jon Arryn's death that Ned cannot be seen doing.
* NiceGuy: The Stark's are devastated by news of his death, with all of them recalling fond memories of times they spent with him.
* MauveShirt
* SacrificialLamb

!!Beth Cassel

!!Lord Cley Cerwyn

Second child and only son of Medger and the heir to Castle Cerwyn. He is friends with the Stark children.

[[folder:House Manderly]]

-> ''"The North Remembers!"''
--> - '''Wyman Manderly'''

Originally a Southron House located in the Reach, several centuries ago, the Manderlys were driven from their seat and were taken under the protection of House Stark and given a seat at White Harbor. As a result, they are known for UndyingLoyalty to the Starks and are the only Andal-descended, Seven-worshipping House in the North. At the time of the series, the head of the House is Wyman Manderly, and he and his family are naturally allies of the Starks, and and lose several members at the hands of the Lannisters and their allies. Wyman's cousin Donella, widowed Lady of Hornwood, was forcibly married by Ramsay Snow and then left to starve to death. Wyman Manderly is ultimately forced to surrender to the Lannisters in exchange for his son Wylis being released for being a hostage.

!!!Tropes:
* AlliterativeFamily / AlphabeticalThemeNaming: Almost all of the current members have names starting with "W".
* ArcWords: "The North remembers".
* [[spoiler: TheDogBitesBack]]
* [[spoiler: FakeDefector]]
* {{Foil}}:
** The Manderlys seem to be this to the Boltons. The Boltons are known for [[TheStarscream rebelling against the Starks]], whereas the Manderlys are known for UndyingLoyalty to them. Roose Bolton is a [[LeanAndMean skinny]] health nut while Wyman Manderly is a morbidly obese glutton. Given all of the FoodPorn in the series, it's obvious who is supposed to be the more sympathetic of the two.
** In a way, the Manderlys are one for the Blackwoods- An Andal, Seven-worshipping House in the North versus a First Men, Old Gods-worshipping House in the South.
* [[spoiler: PayEvilUntoEvil: They feed the Freys three of their own relatives baked into pies. And apparently this is just meant to be the start.]]
** [[spoiler: RevengeByProxy: But an unusual version, in that the Freys are nearly to a man all so despicable that we still root for Wyman.]]
* [[spoiler: PoisonousFriend: Wyman Manderly is one of these to House Stark, doing many things that the honorable Ned would never do (although if he had, Manderly wouldn't have had to take revenge in the first place).]]
* [[spoiler:TheSecretOfLongPorkPies: See the entry for RefugeInAudacity.]]
* StuffedIntoTheFridge: Donella Manderly, Lady Hornwood.
* UglyGuysHotDaughter: Seems to be implied, as while the Manderly men are noted as being obese, this description isn't given for the female members, some of whom are stated to be pretty.
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Starks, at least initially. They eventually surrender to the Lannisters. [[spoiler: In ''A Dance With Dragons'', it is revealed that Wyman's surrender is an act, and he's actually plotting with some other Northern lords to restore House Stark and take revenge on the Freys and Boltons.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:Little Walder Frey... if he was killed by the Manderlys]]. When Lord Manderly says "revenge," he ''really'' means it.

!!Lord Wyman Manderly

Current patriarch of House Manderly, Wyman is morbidly obese yet is BigFun and very loyal to the Starks. As he would not be much use on a battlefield, he sends his two sons to the fighting instead.
----
* {{Acrofatic}}: Despite being obese, Wyman is described as being an elegant dancer, and his similarly rotund sons are brave and effective soldiers.
* BigFun: Introduced as this...
** FatBastard: ...and develops into this by ''A Dance With Dragons'' [[spoiler: while [[GreyAndGreyMorality remaining firmly on the side of the "heroes".]]]]
* [[spoiler: DeathFakedForYou: In order to "prove" loyalty to the Lannisters, Wyman Manderly appears to have executed Davos when he came to White Harbor as a messenger. In actuality, a random prisoner was executed, and Davos is sent on a mission to bring back Rickon Stark.]]
** Slightly subverted in that Lord Manderly makes it clear to [[spoiler:Davos]] that he has been keeping him in his dungeons for a few weeks because he was fully prepared to "discover" the fake, blame the jailer, and produce and execute the real guy if it looked like the Boltons weren't buying it.
* [[spoiler: EvilTastesGood: or more accurately Revenge Tastes Good: The probable explanation for Wyman Manderly's enjoyment of the "Frey Pie".]]
* {{Foil}}: While the two live a continent away, Wyman Manderly plays a very similar role in the story as Doran Martell. Both are physical invalids who gain a reputation as appeasers [[spoiler: while secretly plotting revenge and the restoration of the House they support]]. So far though, Wyman has been more successful and open about his motives.
* HiddenDepths: Wyman appears to be just a jolly fat fool and a bit of a coward, with the result that no one takes him particularly seriously. [[folder:House Mormont]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/house-mormont-001_3320.jpg

->''"Here We Stand"''
-->-- '''Mormont House Words'''

The Mormonts are old, proud Stark bannermen descended from the blood of the First Men. Currently, their lady is Maege Mormont, ruling after her brother Jeor Mormont joined the Night's Watch (he's Lord Commander at the beginning of the series) and his son Jorah went into exile, currently serving under Daenerys Targaryen. Maege has five daughters, and her current heir is the oldest, Dacey. Their seat, Bear Island, is an island often attacked by Ironborn, prompting the women to learn how to defend themselves from raiders. Fittingly, their sigil is a black bear on green.

!!!Tropes:
* ActionGirl: The women of House Mormont learn weapons and war to defend themselves against raiding ironmen while the husbands are away at sea; more recently, since Jeor Mormont took the black, Jorah was attainted, and Maege only had daughters the Mormont women have become the heads of the House (one of the few Houses to have such an arrangement). Unlike Brienne, their Island's history makes them far more comfortable in the role. Special mention to Dacey Mormont, specifically a member of Robb's guard, and Alysane "She-Bear" Mormont.
* AncestralWeapon: One of the few houses to have one; they have a bastard sword named Longclaw currently in Jeor Mormont's possession. [[spoiler:He passes it on to Jon Snow.]]
* AnimalMotifs: Bears - Jeor is called the "Old Bear" and Alysane the "She-Bear." Dany also refers to Jorah as her bear several times.
* BadassFamily: Not only is Jeor ''Lord Commander'' of the Night's Watch, his sister Maege raised five {{Action Girl}}s and is one herself. His son Jorah is also an accomplished knight in his own right.
* BearsAreBadNews: They ''are'' a BadassFamily.
* DeadGuyJunior: Maege's youngest daughter is named Lyanna for Lyanna Stark, a sign of the Mormonts' UndyingLoyalty.
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Starks, like most of the Northern houses. They are one of the few to decline [[spoiler:Stannis's demands for fealty.]] Well, except for Jorah, considering Ned was going to kill him for violating the Westerosi law against participating in the slave trade.
-->'''Lyanna Mormont''': Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name is STARK.

!!Lady Maege Mormont
-->"We are stronger than we seem, my lady."

Current Lady of Bear Island, inheriting the position from her nephew Jorah. Has five daughters.
----
* ActionMom
* ChekhovMIA: Sent to the Neck with Galbart Glover to find Lord Howland Reed, but hasn't been seen since.
* IronLady: She has worked extremely hard to bring House Mormont back to respectability after Jorah squandered their good name and most of their money.
* MamaBear: Maege, as are all the women of Bear Island - while their husbands fish it falls to them to fight off Ironborn raiders. On the gate of House Mormont's keep is a carving of a bearskin-clad woman with a suckling baby in one arm and a battleaxe in the other. Exemplified when she tells Catelyn Stark after her devastatingly risky decision to [[spoiler:release Jaime Lannister]] that she would have done the same if two of her daughters were held captive by the Lannisters.

!!Dacey Mormont
-->"I’ve fought beside the Young Wolf in every battle, and he hasn’t lost one yet."

Maege's oldest daughter and heir.
----
* ActionGirl: Claims to have fought in every battle with Robb.
* AnAxeToGrind: Wields one.
* BodyguardingABadass: The only woman in Robb's personal guard, yet still very competent.
* [[spoiler: CharacterDeath: Despite her best efforts she's killed by Ryman Frey during the Red Wedding, courtesy of an axe to the gut]].
* [[spoiler: DefiantToTheEnd: Despite being unarmed and in an evening gown it takes two armed Freys to eventually kill her. She actually manages to fend off Ser Benfrey Frey by smashing him across the face with a flagon before her death. Notably Benfry is said to have died of his wounds after the massacre, it's quite possible she may softened him up for the next guy to mortally wound him]].
* RealWomenNeverWearDresses: Averted. Dacey is as comfortable in a fancy gown as she is in her armor.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Of the thirty lords' children who personally ride with Robb, Dacey is the only woman.
* StatuesqueStunner: Dacey is six feet tall and described as graceful and beautiful.

!!Alysane Mormont
-->"No. My children were fathered by a bear. Mormont women are skinchangers. We turn into bears and find mates in the woods. Everyone knows."

Maege's second daughter [[spoiler:and new heir following Dacey's death]]. She joins House Mormont with Stannis Baratheon's forces after Roose Bolton is installed as Warden of the North.
----
* AbsurdlyYouthfulMother: She is in her early-mid twenties, but has a nine year old daughter and two year old son. Alysane admits she was a little young when she had her first child, but that it was better to do it quickly rather than never get the chance.
* ActionGirl
* InSeriesNickname: The She-Bear.
* TheQuietOne: Described by Asha Greyjoy as taciturn.
* TheStoic: The only time she shows much emotion is when mentioning her children.

[[folder: House Reed]]

-> ''To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater. Hearth and heart and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Grant Mercy to our weak, help to our helpless, and justice to all, and we shall never fail you. We swear it by earth and water, we swear it by bronze and iron, we swear it by [[ArcWords ice and fire]].''
--> -'''Jojen and Meera Reed'''

The Reeds lead the crannogmen, who live in swamps and marshes by the Neck. They first swore fealty to the Starks thousands of years ago, back when they were still the Kings in the North. Their current head, Howland Reed, is TheGhost, but his two children Meera and Jojen serve as Bran's companions throughout his journey.

Their seat is the elusive Greywater Watch while their sigil is a black [[CallARabbitASmeerp lizard-lion]] (crocodile) on grey-green. Their motto is unknown.

!!!Tropes in general:
* BadassCreed: The Reeds have their own way to swear allegiance to the Starks. See above.
* NeverSmileAtACrocodile: Subverted. Their house sigil is a lizard-lion, and are mistrusted by many because of their reputation as guerrilla fighters, but the Reeds express UndyingLoyalty to the Starks and are one of the more honorable houses in the North. Howland Reed was even Ned Stark's closest friend.
* UndyingLoyalty: Like the Manderlys.

!!Lord Howland Reed

Current Lord of Greywater Watch, Howland is one of Eddard Stark's closest friends. Has yet to make an appearance in the books.
----
* BadAss: Even though Howland has yet to make an appearance in the books, he and Eddard were the only people to walk out of the Tower of Joy alive out of their group of seven. Eddard explicitly states that Howland saved his life from Ser Arthur Dayne, whom both Eddard and Jaime credit as being the greatest swordsman they have ever seen.
* ChekhovMIA
* TheGhost: Most probably because he is [[spoiler: the only survivor from the events of the Tower of Joy, and thus the only surviving person who fully knows the details of Lyanna's death.]]
* SecretKeeper: See above spoiler.
* TookALevelInBadass: As a younger man, he had his spear taken away from him by three fifteen-year-olds, who beat and humiliated him until Lyanna Stark came to his rescue. As an older man, he fought at the Tower of Joy beside Ned Stark, and at one point saved him from [[FamedInStory Arthur Dayne]], thought by many to have been the greatest swordsman of his time.

!!Meera Reed
-->“Sometimes the knights are the monsters, Bran.”

Howland's oldest child, Meera acts as a CoolBigSis and voice of reason on Bran's journey.
----
* ActionGirl
* BrotherSisterTeam: Jojen and Meera.
* CoolBigSis: Meera acts this way towards Bran and Jojen.
* ProngsOfPoseidon: Meera is a Type IV: she fights with a three-pronged spear and a net like a ''retiarus'', which she also uses to fish.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red to Jojen's Blue.
* SiblingYinYang: Meera is cheerful and talkative while Jojen is sullen and solemn.

!!Jojen Reed
--> "We live closer to the green in our bogs and crannogs, and we remember Earth and water, soil and stone, oaks and elms and willows, they were here before us all and will still remain when we are gone."

Heir to Greywater Watch, Jojen has the greensight, special PsychicPowers that used to be common among the Children of the Forest and occasionally show up in children of families that still keep the old ways.
----
* BrotherSisterTeam: Jojen and Meera.
* GreenEyes: Jojen's in particular are said to be striking, which makes sense as he is [[PsychicChildren a greenseer]].

!!Leobald Tallhart

Younger brother of Ser Helman Tallhart and castellan of Torrhen's Square.

!!Benfred Tallhart

Son of Helman Tallhart and heir to Torrhen's Square.
----
* AppropriatedAppellation: His uncle dismissed Benfred and his wannabe battle companions as young rabbits, so they dubbed themselves "Wild Hares" and attached dead rabbits to their spears.
* [[spoiler:CharacterDeath: Gets drowned by Aeron Greyjoy after being captured by Theon’s men and spitting in Theon's face]].
* TooDumbToLive: He and his "Wild Hares" sing loudly while marching and he doesn't send any scout ahead to an area reported to be under attack by raiders. [[spoiler:This gets all his men slaughtered, and when taken before Theon Greyjoy, Benfred spits upon him and insults him, causing Theon to have no choice but to order his execution]].
* [[spoiler:MauveShirt]]
* WarIsGlorious: What he and his companions think after hearing of Robb’s victories in the Riverlands. They quickly discover it is not.

[[folder:House Umber]]

A Northern House noted for its extreme loyalty to the Stark’s. House Umber is seated at Last Hearth, the northern most castle in the North outside of the Night’s Watch outposts. Their sigil is a roaring giant wearing broken chains on a red background.

!!!Tropes associated with the Umbers
* BadassFamily: Every Umber seen so far has a reputation for being a fierce warrior.
* DroitDuSeigneur: Rumor is that they still practice this even though it is banned. Of course, the one claiming this is [[TokenEvilTeammate Roose Bolton]], so it is disputable.
* InSeriesNickname: Every Umber introduced so far has had a nickname.

* InSeriesNickname: "Greatjon", to distinguish him from his son, also named Jon.
* KneelBeforeFrodo: He is the first Northern lord to proclaim Robb as "King in the North", which causes the other Northern lords as well as the lords of the Riverlands to follow suit.
* LargeHam
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Laughs off his fingers being bitten off by Grey Wind on Robb's command and simply takes it as proof that Robb is a true Stark.
* NumberTwo: To Robb.

!!Jon "Smalljon" Umber

Son of Greatjon Umber and heir to Last Hearth. He is one of King Robb Stark’s personal guard. [[spoiler:He is killed at the Red Wedding]].
----
* BadassBeard
* BodyguardingABadass: One of Robb's personal guards.
* InSeriesNickname: "Smalljon", to distinguish him from his father.
** IronicNickname: There is nothing small about him, but the name is due to being younger and just a bit smaller than his dad.
* [[spoiler:OffWithHisHead: Gets decapitated by a Bolton soldier at the Red Wedding while trying to get to his weapons]].

!!Mors "Crowfood" Umber

Uncle of Greatjon Umber and joint castellan of Last Hearth with his younger brother Hothar Umber. After Roose Bolton becomes Warden of the North, Mors pledges fealty to King Stannis Baratheon alongside several other Northern lords.
----
* BadassBeard
* DirtyOldMan: When asking Bran for permission to marry the recently widowed Lady Hornwood, he claimed to have the "cure for her grief" under his furs.
* EyepatchOfPower
* InSeriesNickname: Gained after he lost his eye to a crow that thought he was dead when he slept on the side of a road and began eating him. He responded by grabbing the crow and biting its head off in revenge.

Uncle of Greatjon Umber and joint castellan of the Last Hearth with his older brother Mors Umber. After Roose Bolton becomes Warden of the North, Hothar is forced to join him at Winterfell, but dislikes the situation.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: He earned his nickname by killing a whore who tried to steal from him. The story is kept rather hush-hush, however, because the whore was a man.
* BadassBeard
* BadassBookworm: He was once sent to become a Maester, but returned to the North after disemboweling the above-mentioned whore.

!!The Riverlands
[[folder:House Blackwood]]

A Riverlands noble house seated at Raventree Hall. They are one of the few southern houses that still follow the Old Gods instead of the Way of the Seven. House Blackwood has a long rivalry with House Bracken dating back to the Age of Heroes, when both houses ruled separate kingdoms. Their sigil is a flock of ravens on scarlet surrounding a dead weirwood upon a black escutcheon. Their house words are unknown.

!!!Tropes related to House Blackwood:
* FeudingFamilies: With the Bracken's. While the feud had been ongoing for thousands of years, the two families had managed to make peace for a few centuries until a Bracken killed a Blackwood at a tourney a hundred years before the series began.

!!Lord Tytos Blackwood

Head of House Blackwood and Lord of Raventree.
----

** BadassBeard: He has a neatly trimmed goatee.
** BadassCape: Often wears a raven-feather cloak.
* HonorBeforeReason: Refuses to submit to the Iron Throne after the Red Wedding, [[spoiler:becoming the last lord to proclaim loyalty to Robb’s cause in the Riverlands]]. He still refuses to surrender after a half a year siege to Raventree, because Lord Jonos Bracken is the one commanding it. [[spoiler:When Ser Jamie Lannister arrives to take over the siege, Tytos immediately surrenders, knowing he will get better terms and will not have to surrender to Jonos]].
* KneelBeforeFrodo: Proclaims Robb as "King in the North", despite being a Riverlands Lord whose territory has never been ruled from Winterfell before.
* TheRival: To Lord Jonos Bracken.
* UndyingLoyalty: To House's Tully and Stark. [[spoiler:He refuses to surrender after the Red Wedding, and Raventree becomes the last Stark stronghold in the Riverlands until he was reluctantly forced to surrender to Ser Jamie Lannister.]]

An ancient Riverlands House seated at Stone Hedge. They used to rule as kings in the Age of Heroes, when House Blackwood rose against them, setting off a centuries long feud between the two houses. Their sigil is a red stallion upon a golden escutcheon on brown.

!!!Tropes related to House Bracken:
* FeudingFamilies: With the Blackwood’s. While the feud had been ongoing for thousands of years, the two families had managed to make peace for a few centuries until a Bracken killed a Blackwood at a tourney a hundred years before the series began.

!!Lord Jonos Bracken
-->"Gregor Clegane laid waste to my fields, slaughtered my smallfolk, and left Stone Hedge a smoking ruin. Am I now to bend the knee to the ones who sent him? What have we fought for, if we are to put all back as it was before."

Head of House Mallister and Lord of Stone Hedge
----
* FaceHeelTurn: Forced to bend the knee and swear loyalty to the Iron Throne after the Red Wedding. He still refers to [[spoiler:Robb’s death as murder]], but felt that there was no point fighting for a lost cause. Being able to take some land from his rival House Blackwood, who still opposed the Iron Throne, also contributed to his decision.
* {{Jerkass}}: Not obvious in the early books, but revealed in A Dance With Dragons, where he recommends to Ser Jamie Lannister that he take Tytos Blackwood’s only daughter as a hostage to ensure his loyalty to the Iron Throne, knowing that it would hurt is rival.
* KneelBeforeFrodo: Proclaims Robb as “King in the North”, despite being a Riverlands Lord whose territory has never been ruled from Winterfell before.

[[folder:House Frey]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/house-frey-001_9559.png

Powerful bannermen of House Tully, and Lords of the Crossing. Their seat, the Twins, are the only way to cross a major river, which has made them very rich. Their patriarch is Walder Frey and his progeny are weaselly and scheming just like him, holding intense grudges and high ambition. Although not a traditional "Great" house, they rise in power during the civil war, though they are always disliked amongst their current allies. Lord Walder Frey is over 90, currently on his 8th wife. With over 25 legitimate sons and countless daughters, bastards, and grandchildren, he brings new meaning to the BigScrewedUpFamily trope. Their members tend to have a weaselly appearance and their sigil is two towers.

!!!Tropes:
* AnimalStereotypes: Almost all Freys are described as ugly and weaselly, particularly the male Freys. Subverted by Roslin and Fair Walda, the two most attractive Frey girls.
* BlatantLies: [[spoiler: The Freys' excuse for the Red Wedding. They claim the Starks drew first blood, transformed into werewolves, and the massacre was just an act of self-defense. The Northmen and Rivermen don't buy it, but are powerless to do anything since their relatives are being held as hostages.]]
** One listener sarcastically notes that it sounds like the Freys decided that since nobody was ever going to believe that the massacre wasn't their fault, they might as well go all out and put some creative flair into the cover-up story.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: And how!
* TheClan
* DisproportionateRetribution: [[spoiler:''The Red Wedding''. The "slight" Robb caused them by marrying someone else was enough to provoke murdering him, most of the men at his side and joining the Lannisters. This action has made them deeply hated across the major Northern and Riverlands houses, most of which also lost people at the massacre.]]
** [[spoiler: This doesn't even sit well with their new-found southron allies, many of whom universally revile the Freys' breach of SacredHospitality.]]
* FiveBadBand:
** TheBigBad: Lord Walder
** TheDragon: Walder Rivers and Lothar
** TheEvilGenius: Aenys and Symond
** TheBrute: Black Walder and Hosteen
** DarkChick: Edwyn
** TheLoad: Emmon and Petyr
** TheMillstone: Ryman and Merrett
* [[TheFriendNobodyLikes The Ally Nobody Likes]]: They're necessary to the war effort due to their possession of the Twins, the only crossing point over the Green Fork of the Trident for hundreds of miles, but their {{Jerkass}} and selfish tendencies make them disliked by the Northmen and Rivermen alike. Heck, they're less popular than the allied House that ''regularly flays people alive''. [[spoiler:They retain this status once they join the Lannisters, with their southron allies loathing them for their breach of SacredHospitality]].
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: They have a reputation for this, a well deserved one.
* ItRunsInTheFamily
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Lord Walder has fathered twenty-nine legitimate children.
* NeverLiveItDown: In-universe, [[spoiler: The Red Wedding]]. The decision to [[spoiler: break the laws of SacredHospitality, murder their King and side with Tywin Lannister]] has left them deeply loathed among [[spoiler: all the major Northern and Riverlands houses except the Boltons]]. Even the Freys' [[spoiler:new]] allies express disdain for them. The only reason they haven't been moved against is they still have [[spoiler: hostages]]. ''"The North remembers."''
* [[OneSteveLimit One Walder/Walda Limit]]: Averted, with all the Walders and Waldas in the family. Additionally, the extended family features a bunch of names you've already seen elsewhere (there's Cleos' son Tywin Frey, a Cersei Frey, a Sandor Frey, a Rhaegar Frey and an Aegon Frey, known more popularly as "Jinglebell").
** Lord Walder's descendants keep naming their kids after him in attempt to please him or win favor. He confesses to a guest early on that it actually just annoys him since at this point there are dozens of Walders and Waldas and he can't tell them apart.
* PromotedToScapegoat: Though none of them seem aware of it, this is their "reward" for the Red Wedding.
* RagsToRiches: Except they made their fortunes through legitimate means and they are looked down upon by the other Great Houses.
* ShadowArchetype[=/=]Foil: To House Tully. Freys also hold "family" above everything else, but they don't give a damn about duty or honor, o.
* ShoutOut[=/=]MeaningfulName: "Frey" is the name of the chief male Norse god of fertility. [[ReallyGetsAround Yes, that kind of 'fertility'.]]
** A StealthPun and a spoiler for book 3: [[spoiler: Their keep, the Twins, is a set of ''double'' towers on opposite sides of the river Trident, and their official title is the Lords of the ''Crossing''.]]
* SmugSnake: Pretty much [[GangOfHats The Hat]] of the entire house. Ryman and Rhaegar are probably the biggest Smug Snakes of the lot.
* [[spoiler:TheStarscream: To the Tullys.]]
* WhosLaughingNow: They view the [[spoiler: Red Wedding]] as this. Merrett was on the receiving end after Jaime Lannister stopped his bullying when they were both squires.

!!Lord Walder Frey

Current Lord of the Crossing, Walder Frey is a weaselly, ambitious man well into his nineties and on his eighth wife.
----
* DirtyOldMan: According to the CharacterSheet at the end of the fourth book, Walder's current wife is with child. This son will be younger than his own great-grandnieces.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Walder Frey resents how the other Houses of Westeros look down on the Freys because they are a relatively new House.
* EvilOldFolks: Lord Walder is ninety-one.
* GrumpyOldMan
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: Walder Frey treats his family members pretty badly, but cannot stand anyone else looking down on them.
* InUniverseNickname: "Late Lord Frey."
* KavorkaMan
* NeverLiveItDown: In-universe: Hoster called him the "Late Lord Frey" after he only showed up to the Battle of the Trident when the rebels' forces were sure to win.
* OldManMarryingAChild: Lord Walder is in his nineties and his newest wife, Joyeuse Erenford, is sixteen.
* OutnumberedSibling: Lord Walder himself. His father, the previous Lord Frey, apparently had a great deal of daughters, but Walder appears to have been his only son.
* ReallyGetsAround: He's had eight wives over his 90-plus years and has had enough sex with other women to create an army of bastards. Not for nothing is it said that Walder Frey is the only lord who can field an army from his breeches.
* ThickerThanWater: Walder Frey may be callous to his many kids and grandkids, but he doesn't let ''anyone'' else give them shit. [[spoiler:Robb learned that, fatally.]] Well, except for the poor half-witted grandson Jinglebell, anyway.
* VerbalTic: "Heh."

* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Ryman, to Edwyn and Black Walder. Particularly during [[spoiler: the siege of Riverrun. Ryman's main contributions to said siege are threatening to hang Edmure, regularly passing out drunk, and annoying his allies.]]
* BloodKnight: Black Walder, Hosteen and to a lesser extent, Walder Rivers.
* TheBully: Merrett Frey apparently bullied the other Kingsguard squires, until...
** BullyingADragon: He tried to bully [[BadAss Jaime Lannister]]. We never find out exactly what Jaime did to him, but it was apparently such a humiliating beatdown for Merrett that it completely broke his hold over the other kids and turned him into a...
** ButtMonkey: Merrett Frey ended up as this to just about everyone and was this to the Frey House before [[spoiler: getting hanged by Lady Stoneheart]].
*** Part of his descent into monkeyness involved getting a fawn branded onto one of his buttocks by a Wenda the White Fawn, a female member of the Kingswood Brotherhood, so there was an actual BUTT involved.
* ChristmasCake: Tyta Frey, a maid at 29, is one InUniverse.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Emmon Frey, particularly [[spoiler:after learning that despite becoming Lord of Riverrun he won't become Lord Paramount of the Riverlands.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Big Walder starts to get disturbed by how psychopathic Little Walder becomes.
* EvilCripple: "Lame" Lothar
* FatBastard: Ryman Frey
* FauxAffablyEvil: Lame Lothar, who acts friendly and courteous but [[spoiler:helped Roose Bolton plan the logistics of the Red Wedding]]
* HenpeckedHusband: Emmon and Merrett
* InUniverseNickname:
** Lame Lothar (Lothar Frey)
** Petyr Pimple (Petyr Frey)
** Black Walder
** Little Walder
** Big Walder
** Red Walder
** Gatehouse Ami (Amerei Frey)
** Fair Walda
** Fat Walda
** Bastard Walder (Walder Rivers)
** Ser Stupid (Hosteen Frey)
* {{Jerkass}}: An entire family of them. Only Olyvar, Alesander, Stevron, Cleos, and Perywn seem to have been alright guys. And Roslin the only girl. See TokenGoodTeamMate below.
* JerkassVictim: Little Walder Frey gets killed by the "Ghost of Winterfell."
** In ''A Storm of Swords'' and 'A Feast for Crows'', [[spoiler: Petyr, Merrett, and Ryman all fall victim to the Brotherhood Without Banners.]]
* KidsAreCruel: In ''A Dance with Dragons'', Little Walder is well on his way to becoming a miniature Ramsay Bolton. In the latest ''Dunk & Egg'' story, Walder Frey himself was a spoiled little shit as a four-year old.
** Walder Frey also suffers from this trope among the Tullys. He arrived to the Battle of the Trident after the rebels had already won. His liege lord, Hoster Tully, nicknamed him the "Late Lord Frey."
* OddNameOut: There is a ''Waltyr'' Frey whose name causes some confusion for his relatives who are used to all the Walders.
* ReallyGetsAround: Amerei Frey, who ironically gets betrothed to the devoutly religious Lancel Lannister, whose nickname is "Gatehouse Ami" (as she will raise her portcullis for anyone). Also, it's mentioned that Black Walder has slept with many of the adult women in the Twins, from the wives of his brothers Edwyn and Petyr to his half-cousins Fair Walda and Gatehouse Ami and is rumored to have slept with even Annara Farring, one of Lord Walder's previous wives.
* ScrewPolitenessImASenior: Lord Walder.
* SiblingRivalry: Edwyn and Black Walder are famously unfond of each other.
* TheSpymaster: Symond.
* TokenGoodTeamMate: Perwyn Frey is the only adult, male Frey who is not an asshole. [[spoiler:Which is why he was sent away during the Red Wedding]]. Likewise, Olyvar, Robb's former squire, and Alesander Frey, [[spoiler: both also absent from the wedding]]. Stevron Frey was apparently not a bad person either [[spoiler:but he died after being wounded at Oxcross]].
* UglyGuysHotDaughter: Alyx, Fair Walda and Roslin.
* UglyGuyHotWife: Emmon Frey and Genna Lannister; Merrett Frey and Mariya Darry'; [[WildMassGuessing probably]] Walder Frey and Bethany Rosby.
** The reverse may have applied to Lord Walder's parents. His father was described as "lean and elegant" in the latest Dunk & Egg story and Walder had to have gotten his looks from ''somewhere.''

[[folder:House Mallister]]
->"''Above the Rest''"
--> - '''House Mallister words'''

A Riverlands House seated in Seagard that has a long history of beating back Ironborn raiders. Their sigil is a silver eagle displayed over a purple background.

!!!Tropes related to House Mallister:
* BigBadassBirdOfPrey: Their sigil, and eagle.
* MeaningfulName: Their seat, Seagard, guards against Ironborn raiders attacking the Riverlands from Ironman's Bay.

!!Lord Jason Mallister

Head of House Mallister and Lord of Seagard.
----
* {{Badass}}: During Robert’s Rebellion, he slew three different lords at the Battle of the Trident. When the Ironborn attacked Seagard during the Greyjoy Rebellion, he slew Rodrik Greyjoy and forced them to flee back to the sea.
* CoolHelmet: Wears a helm with eagle wings coming out the top.
* ProperlyParanoid: Greatly dislikes Theon Greyjoy due to him being Ironborn and tries to stop his son from forming a friendship with him, despite Theon never having done anything to him and being one of Robb’s closest allies. [[spoiler:He was absolutely right to do so, since Theon turned on Robb and led Ironborn forces in assaulting the North]].
* {{Pride}}: Catelyn notes that he has always been very prideful, and constantly looks as if he has nothing to fear.

!!Patrek Mallister

Son of Jason Mallister and heir of Seagard.
----
* [[spoiler:BadassInDistress: Captured during the Red Wedding and held hostage to force his father to surrender Seagard to the Iron Throne]].
* BodyguardingABadass: One of Robb Stark’s personal guards.

!!The Reach
[[folder: House Florent]]

An ancient house in the Reach that has a more direct line of descent from the extinct House Gardner, House Florent has long believed that they should rule from Highgarden as Wardens of the Reach, not House Tyrell. Their seat is Brightwater Keep, situated on the Honeywine River. While initially siding with Renly Baratheon in the War of Five Kings, they switched allegiance over to Stannis Baratheon. They have since been disentitled from their lands in the Reach by Tywin Lannister.

Their sigil is a red-gold fox's head encircled by lapis lazuli flowers. Their house words are currently unknown.

!!!Tropes related to House Florent:
* TheExile: Due to supporting Stannis, House Florent has been attainted, with House Tyrell being given Brightwater Keep to start a new cadet house with Garlan Tyrell as head. Alekyne Florent, the heir to House Florent, is currently seeking refuge in Oldtown.
* TheStarscream: To House Tyrell, having only reluctantly followed them in supporting Renly and jumping ship to Stannis the first chance they got.

!!Lord Alester Florent

Head of House Florent and Lord of Brightwater. Appointed Hand of the King by Stannis Baratheon.
----
* HumanSacrifice: In punishment for betraying Stannis, he is burned alive by Melisandre to gain favorable winds when Stannis sails north to [[spoiler:the Wall]].
* NumberTwo: To Stannis, until he got the bright idea to try and forge a treaty with King's Landing after the Battle of Blackwater Bay by offering to marry Stannis’ daughter to Tommen and have Stannis' retract his claims that [[spoiler:Cersei's children were products of incest]] in exchange of Stannis being pardoned and allowed to rule both Dragonstone and Storm's End. Naturally, he was thrown into prison when Stannis discovered he had done this.
* TooDumbToLive: Seriously, what about Stannis made Alester ever think he could go behind his back with the above mentioned deal or that Stannis would ever agree to it?

!!Ser Axell Florent

Brother of Alester, castellan of Dragonstone, uncle to Queen Selyse, and self-styled Hand of the Queen. Ser Axell is one of the most fervent followers of R'hllor.
----
* TheDragon: To Queen Selyse, as the most prominent of the Queen's Men.
* TheFundamentalist
* KillEmAll: His solution to Lord Ardrian Celtigar bending the knee to Joffery after being captured at the Battle of Blackwater Bay is to sail to Celtigar's holdings on Claw Island and kill everyone there, including the smallfolk.
* KnightTemplar
* {{Jerkass}}: Particularly to Davos Seaworth, who he looks down on for being lowborn and a disbeliever in R'hllor.

!!Ser Imry Florent

Alester's nephew and brother to Queen Selyse. Lord High Captain of Stannis' fleet and captain of the ''Fury''.
----
* TheCaptain: Of the ''Fury'', Stannis' flagship.
* CharacterDeath: Killed by wildfire at Blackwater Bay.
* [[GeneralFailure Admiral Failure]]: His refusal to follow Davos' advice in the Battle of Blackwater Bay (sending scouts into Blackwater Bay) led to most of Stannis' fleet being destroyed in Tyrion's wildfire trap.
* TooDumbToLive: Arrogantly believed that any tricks the Lannister's might have waiting for the fleet in Blackwater Bay would be overcome by the sheer number of ships in the fleet, and he discounted the impact that wildfire could have on the battle.

[[folder:House Tarly]]

House Tarly is a vassal house sworn to House Tyrell in the Reach. Their home is at Horn Hill, in the foothills north of Oldtown and the Red Mountains of Dorne. The current lord is Randyll Tarly, currently serving as master of laws at King's Landing. Lord Tarly's wife, Melessa Florent, their three daughters and youngest son Dickon have not yet been seen in the books, while his eldest son, Samwell, serves in the Night's Watch. Tropes relevant to Samwell can be found on that page. The sigil of House Tarly is a striding huntsman, while their house words have not yet been revealed.

!!!Tropes:
* AncestralWeapon: A [[{{BFS}} Valyrian steel longsword]] named Heartsbane, which Randyll uses for the same purpose as Ned Stark.
* TheLancer: To House Tyrell; while the other major lords joined Mace Tyrell at King's Landing, Randyll Tarly and his men were sent to clean up the Riverlands in the aftermath of the war.
* OldShame: Samwell, who Randyll hasn't thought twice about since sending him off to the Night's Watch.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The two Tarly boys, Samwell and Dickon, respectively.

!!Lord Randyll Tarly
->"You are almost a man grown now, and my heir. You have given me no cause to disown you, but neither will I allow you to inherit the land and title that should be Dickon's. Heartsbane must go to a man strong enough to wield her, and you are not worthy to touch her hilt. So I have decided that you shall this day announce that you wish to take the black. You will forsake all claim to your brother's inheritance and start north before evenfall. If you do not, then on the morrow we shall have a hunt, and somewhere in these woods your horse will stumble, and you will be thrown to the saddle to die...or so I will tell your mother. She has a woman's heart and finds it in her to cherish you, and I have no wish to cause her pain. Please do not imagine that it will truly be that easy, should you think to defy me. Nothing would please me more than to hunt you down like the pig you are. So. There is your choice. The Night's Watch..." (''Rips out a deer's heart.'') "Or this."

Head of House Tarly and Lord of Horn Hill.
----
* AbusiveParents: A running theme in this series, but Randyll still manages to stand out. Not even Tywin Lannister or Balon Greyjoy will straight up tell their kids of their intention to kill them if they don't do what he wants.
* AgentScully: During the Small Council meeting he attends, he frequently and disparagingly offers his disbelief that [[spoiler:Jon Connington]] has returned.
* BrutalHonesty: Tarly says what he means and does not care if it offends the people around him.
* ColonelBadass: Commands the forces from the Reach in the absence of the Tyrells. Widely acknowledged to be one of the best soldiers in Westeros.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: Bordering on ColdBloodedTorture. He orders a whore's private parts to be ''scrubbed with lye''.
* TheDeterminator: He wanted a real man for a son and did not stop trying to whip Sam into shape for years, no matter how futile it seemed, until his wife finally fired a second son out.
* {{Fingore}}: For the crime of theft, Tarly will remove a finger. For the crime of theft from a sept, and thus stealing from the seven gods, Tarly will remove seven fingers.
* HangingJudge: Of the KnightTemplar variety.
* NumberTwoForBrains: Kevan Lannister sees him as this to Mace Tyrell.
* OffingTheOffspring: Probably the only man who flatly told their child he intended to do this to them should they defy him.
* ParentalFavoritism: Isn't even subtle about blatantly preferring Dickon to Samwell.
* ARealManIsAKiller: Believes this utterly.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Randyll gives Sam a truly devastating one ending in the SadisticChoice below.
* SadisticChoice: His EstablishingCharacterMoment is to offer one to Sam: be ReassignedToAntarctica or...[[OffingTheOffspring well]]...
* SinkOrSwimMentor: Once literally did this to Sam. It ended about as well as you'd expect.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: His EstablishingCharacterMoment occurs before he even turns up; while his presence is felt heavily by Sam throughout the first book, Randyll himself doesn't appear until the second book, and then only fleetingly. In fact he only appears three times in the series thus far, and only briefly each time.
* TheSpartanWay: His method of "training" Sam. Includes but is not limited to chaining him to a wall for three days, having him beaten by knights and men-at-arms, forcing him to sleep in chainmail, and even having him ''bathed in the blood of a freshly-slaughtered aurochs'', at the behest of two warlocks. [[CaptainObvious Nothing worked.]]
* StrawMisogynist: When Brienne found herself "courted" by knights of the camp, who were actually putting money on who could sleep with her first, Tarly put an end to the bet before it could, he assumed, escalate to rape, and told Brienne what was going on. Seems fair enough, until he bluntly tells Brienne that by dressing up like a knight, she was asking for it.
* WellDoneSonGuy: One of the most extreme examples.

* LeanAndMean
* MyMasterRightOrWrong[=/=]PunchClockVillain: He kills people whenever ordered to because that's his job.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast
* OffWithHisHead: His method of execution, and is very good at it.
* SilentSnarker: Comes across this way to Jaime (and once openly laughs at him). This makes sense since the reason Ilyn got his tongue cut out was for [[BullyingADragon snarking about King Aerys]].
* TheSpeechless: His tongue was cut out under orders of the Mad King.

!!Podrick Payne

A member of a lesser branch of House Payne, he was assigned to be Tyrion's squire following Tyrion's appointment as temporary Hand of the King.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: He's constantly nervous and flustered around people.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: You wouldn't expect the constantly nervous, twelve-year-old boy to be able to [[spoiler:kill a member of the Kingsguard]] or take on members of the Brave Companions.
* DoesNotUnderstandSarcasm: Due to his constant nervousness, he's slow to pick up on Tyrion’s snark.
* IWillFindYou: A non-romantic example to [[spoiler:Tyrion]]. In the fourth book he follows Brienne because he believes [[spoiler:if she finds Sansa, he can find Tyrion]].
* ParentalAbandonment: His father died during the Greyjoy rebellion while his mother literally abandoned him when he was four. He had two {{Parental Substitute}}s who also died, the first while fighting in the Riverlands for Tywin, the second was executed for stealing a ham. After the second one died, Pod was handed over to Tyrion as a squire. Losing so many people is probably why he's so dedicated to [[spoiler:finding Tyrion]].
* TheQuietOne
* TagAlongKid: To [[spoiler:Brienne]] in ''AFeastForCrows''.
* UndyingLoyalty: He's Tyrion's squire and he takes his duty very seriously. [[spoiler:He's even trying to find Tyrion to serve him after Tyrion was falsely accused of killing Joffrey and rightly accused of killing the Hand of the King, Tywin Lannister]].
