• Yangchen orders some of her guards to bring Kavik to the basement and ensure he is unharmed, but they beat him up. What does Yangchen do upon discovering this?
  She noticed the small trickle of blood leaking from the corner of Kavik's mouth. "Captain Gai," she said to the leader of her guards.
  "Yes, Mistress?"
  "You're fired."
  The bluntness of her statement caused it to bounce off Kavik's ears. Gai needed a moment too. "I'm sorry?" he said.
  The Avatar turned to him. "You and your men are all fired. I told you not to harm him and you did. What's not to understand?"
  "But...but..."
  "None of you are eligible for employment for security in the Avatar's retinue anymore." Her voice never rose above a conversational level, yet the men wilted as if she were spouting dragon's breath. "Report to Boma and tell him what you did so he can strike your names from the lists. Now."
• Kavik thinks he's tricked the Avatar, only to find out that she followed him home, at which point she carefully manipulates events until he has no choice but to work for her.
  "Everyone you meet in Bin-Er is in someone else's pocket. From the moment you appeared, I was trying to figure out whose pocket you were in. Now I finally have the answer." A fresh slash of a grin spread across her face.
  "Mine," Avatar Yangchen declared. "Now you're in mine."
