* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: [[spoiler: Inverted. The strategy that the protagonist invented to defeat Godzilla, was thought for the Godzilla of 20,000 years ago. Unfortunately for humans, Godzilla has become much more powerful at that time. So it would be a case of Hero Forgot To Level Grind.]]

* GiantFlyer: The flying variant of the Servum are multi-eyed, PteroSoarer-ish kaiju that share 97% of their genome with Godzilla.

* LethallyStupid: Haruo survives but his selfish and severely ill-advised actions and choices to bring the fight to Godzilla instead of leaving well enough alone [[spoiler:lead to the death of every single member of the landing party which amounted to hundreds, if not thousands of people. Aside from Metphies, he is possibly the only one to survive.]]

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Ever wonder what happens if a child of Godzilla wasn’t a GentleGiant or RaisedByHumans and was raised by his father? Ever wonder what happens if you did lay a finger on one should you harm it? * CentralTheme: ''Revenge''. The whole film explores this theme and it shows exactly how bad it is. Haruo and Godzilla actively seeks vengeance, but guess who actually succeeds in it? Haruo, at times, verges on having a [[Literature/MobyDick Ahab-like obsession]] with killing Godzilla, beyond all reason and sanity.

* AdaptationSpeciesChange: This Godzilla is plant-based, unlike all other Godzillas.

* AfterTheEnd: The film is set several thousand years after kaiju have driven humans off the Earth. An initial estimate of 10,000 years is given before a more accurate assessment of approximately 20,000 years is provided.

** Invoked in a discussion between Metphies and Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu regarding their respective species possible motives for trying to help kill Godzilla prior to Earth's evacuation. Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu posits that the Exifs intended to conquer Earth by brainwashing the humans into following their religion, and Metphies replies that the Bilusalodo would have used Mecha-Godzilla as a weapon against the humans once Godzilla was dead.

** Due to the kaiju winning, the Earth has become this to humanity when they return after 20,000 years. The air itself is unbreathable. The plants -- which are offshoots of Godzilla -- have become hard enough to break a knife and with razor sharp leaves, and release metallic pollen that messes with radio communication and long-range sensors. That's not even getting into Flying-Type Servum -- dragon-like creatures that are offshoots of Godzilla and can shred armored vehicles with their claws -- let alone Godzilla himself. The planet has literally evolved to kill humans.

* EpicFail: The Bilusaludo constructed a Mechagodzilla to take on the real deal, and when it was time to unveil it, they couldn't even turn it on.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: In the beginning, the movie firmly established that Godzilla is a NoNonsenseNemesis, destroying anyone and anything he encounters immediately. Once the humans return to Earth, the humans had to be careful just in case if Godzilla shows up. And indeed he does, but note that he ''did not'' attack immediately. He only attacked when he was provoked by Haruo. This is one of the signs that [[spoiler:it's a different Godzilla]]. And indeed, the Godzilla that Haruo defeats is [[spoiler: an offspring of the original, and once he shows up, he attacks the humans immediately]].

* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Leland personally attacks Godzilla in one of the mecha-walkers midway through the film, buying time for the other forces to escape while also revealing the location of Godzilla's shield-generating organ, and pays for it with a personal blast from the kaiju's atomic breath.]] Later in the film, [[spoiler: Haruo ''tries'' to do this by using one of the MiniMecha to jump onto Godzilla's back, knowing that the artillery cannons will probably kill him alongside the monster. He ends up disengaging in time to avoid being blown up.]]

* NonMaliciousMonster: Godzilla [[spoiler: Fillius]]. While he shoots down a probe, the reason why he attacks the humans was because he was provoked by Haruo. He would have simply left the humans alone as he doesn't appear to have the same animosity as [[spoiler:his father displayed]] millennia ago. However, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero thanks to Haruo]], he attacks the humans' assault on him out of self-defense. [[spoiler:When the real Godzilla shows up, he appears to be anything ''but'' non-malicious]].

* TooDumbToLive:
** Inverted. Haruo survives but his selfish and severely ill-advised actions and choices to bring the fight to Godzilla instead of leaving well enough alone [[spoiler:lead to the death of every single member of the landing party which amounted to hundreds, if not thousands of people. Aside from Metphies, he is possibly the only one to survive.]]
** Played straight with everyone else who just blindly agreed to go along with the death wish plan of their leader who clearly does not have his head on straight, even more egregious so that not one person objects and suggests that they get the hell out even after the sudden attack by the Servum.-To be fair, the film establishes that life in space hasn’t been particularly kind to humanity, even if they haven’t been spacefarers for as long as either the Exifs or the Bilusaludo. Every attempt to colonize other moons or planets has ended in disaster, and resources are dwindling, so even if they did retreat, they’d only buy themselves a few months of survival at best. There’s also the fact that Metphies [[spoiler: may have manipulated Haruo and his forces into essentially getting themselves killed via Godzilla Fillius, or the real Godzilla himself.]] Nonetheless, that no one thought to come up with possibly successful alternatives even AFTER Metphies’ endorsement of the plan still qualifies.

To avert a NoExportForYou, Toho released the movie on Creator/{{Netflix}} on January 17th 2018, two months after the film's theatrical debut. The film is the first in a trilogy, the second, ''Anime/GodzillaCityOnTheEdgeOfBattle'', arrived in May 2018 and centered around Mechagodzilla. The third film, ''Anime/GodzillaThePlanetEater'', was released November 9, 2018 in Japan and was released worldwide on Netflix on January 9, 2019, and features King Ghidorah.
