Yuki Kajiura's character relationship themes
Three of Yuki Kajiura's Cosmic Era theme songs particularly stand out in memory of those who watched the original series: "Anna ni Issho Datta no ni
", "Akatsuki no Kuruma", and "Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru". An argument can be made that each of these three songs have such staying power because they tie in directly into three very important relationships between main characters of the respective series:- "Anna ni Issho Datta no ni" ("We were so close together, but...") is about the relationship between Kira and Athrun, Best Friends since childhood, now torn apart by war. The lyrics feature prominently the necessity of being Cruel to Be Kind, being too far away to communicate properly, and yearning desperately for quiet respite.
- "Akatsuki no Kuruma" ("The Chariot of Dawn") is about Cagalli's grief for her late father, Uzumi Nara Athha. The lyrics describe someone who plays a guitar elegy in a desperate attempt to drown out the violent plucking at her own aching heart's strings.
- "Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru" ("Your Face Resembles Mine"note ) is, perhaps, the most interesting of the three, as, on closer inspection, it describes the rather messed-up quasi-identity relationship between Lacus and Meer, expressed in the repeated POV shifts after each verse:
- Verse 1 opens the song with Lacus addressing Meer, telling her how the latter's face was made to resemble the former's and how much anguish it has caused Meer.
- Verse 2 switches to Meer's POV, as she expresses a desire to live the life she's chosen.
- In verse 3, Lacus once again remarks on their similarity, and offers Meer to end the whole charade if she wants to.
- Verse 4 sees Meer reject Lacus' offer, concluding that doing the only thing one can do is something that she herself would ultimately approve of.
- Verse 5 goes back to Lacus who tells Meer that she will welcome her with open arms if she ever decides to make up with her, given how of all the people in the world, she understands her best.
- Verse 6 finally has Meer repeat what Lacus said about their similarities and thank her for setting her mind at ease and giving her a will to live again.
