Raven Beak and the Conflict Between Love and Power

The dichotomy of selfless love and selfish power has been present throughout the entire mainline Metroid series. It all comes to a head in Dread, helped mostly by its villain Raven Beak.

Raven Beak espouses the belief that "power is everything", or in the Chozo tongue, "Hadar sen olmen". The Thoha, the X, even rebellious members of his own tribe were all overcome with great power.

Even when his plan is foiled by Samus Aran destroying the Metroids on SR388, this only feeds his obsession further: he learns that she retains the DNA of the infant Metroid.

When Raven Beak confronts Samus in Artaria, he overwhelms her and almost finishes her off, but is interrupted by the promise of power from Samus' Metroid evolution. Thus he spares her, just like she once spared the hatchling.

Raven Beak continues to hold power over Samus for the journey on ZDR. He secretly directs by impersonating her comrade ADAM and killing her newfound Thoha ally, Quiet Robe.

But the greatest contrast against Samus is when he reveals their connection: she has his DNA. He is a father to her. But instead of using this revelation to show his love, he uses it to exert power over her. When this fails, and when he's overpowered Samus yet again, he continues to gloat about power while calling her "foolish daughter".

But Samus rejects it. Using the power of a Metroid (a power she earned through the love of sparing the Baby), she overwhelms Raven Beak, crashing him and his ship, Itorash, to the surface. Defiantly, he calls out one last time before succumbing to the Metroid warrior: HADAR SEN OLMEN.
