Chapter 29: Crossroads

Nanashi: Alright, think I should bolster our troops a bit before going deeper... ooh, this\'ll be fun!

Azrael: At least, released from that blasted Expanse and- YOU! Invoked by you, who sent me back there? This will not do. I must return to Lord Merkabah\'s side and-

Nanashi: Oh, you mean the Merkabah whose angelic patuckus I kicked right back to the Expanse? Sorry, but you\'re with me now.

Cherub: Trust me, he\'s not so bad. Something about Lord Merkabah\'s actions has been bothering me, too...

Lucifuge: Fuhuhuhu... I\'m here as well. To work alongside humans? Angels? Beings who could conquer Lucifer? Truly the powers of observation flourish!

Huang Long: And now let the One who stands at the center of the Four Beasts arrive. Young one who slew the man who slaughtered my nation... it would be my honor to assist you!

HERALD AZRAEL

Character notes: The Islamic archangel governing death, the counterpart of the Judaic Uriel. He has for wings and four heads, and his body is covered with eyes that cause death when they blink. He\'s equally skilled at both Dark and Light, and has his unique skill from his boss fight, Blink of Death, which is a Mudoon stacked with a Rakunda. H\'es a highly useful demon who can easily last a long time.

Personality notes: As per canon.

TYRANT LUCIFUGE

Character notes: Prime Minister of Hell in demonology, and right arm of Lucifer himself. He manages to day-to-day affairs of Hell, including coining its money, and his three direct subordinates are the Goetic demons Bael, Agares, and Marbas. He\'s a Wind and Dark user, who has his own unique move - Light Devourer, which is a Mamudoon that leeches health. Also, Luster Candy. Another demon whose level belies his usefulness.

Personality notes: As per canon.

DRAGON HUANG LONG

Character notes: The Yellow Dragon of the Center; the master of the Four Symbols and the grandest of China\'s legendary creatures. He is often used as a symbol of the nation itself. He governs the element of Earth and the direction, as mentioned, of Center. He\'s an Almighty specialists who is most notable for the passive Victory Cry, which completely regenerates all HP and MP after every single battle!

Personality notes: A grandiose, noble dragon, melancholy at the fate of his people.

I should\'ve probably mentioned this last time, but after each boss is a gross organic door that has one of those weird little glowing pillars stuck in it. We\'ve now got four of them, including the one from the entrance.

Anyway, level four of the Cosmic Egg combines both warps and one-way doors, but like a lot of these mazes in SMT games the vast majority of it is a dummy. If you want, you can go through the first door, take the right-hand warp in the big X-shaped room this door leads to, then take the warp beyond that to be spat out right at the boss. The other rooms have items in them, though, so it\'s worth looking around.

Tzitzimitl: Ohhhhhhhhhh what delectable little morsels have wandered into our Egg? I could just DEVOUR... YOU... ALIVE...

Tonatiuh: Yeep!

Nanashi: What\'s up with him, he\'s usually so dignified.

Quetzalcoatl: Strictly Teteoh business, need not concern you.

Kama: Fufufufufu... how magnificent! Hiking this deep into a demonic stronghold for love? You, young man... ever so lucky. You have TWO fair damsels to pick from? I cannot wait for the CARNAGE this will wreak!

TYRANT TZITZIMITL

Character notes: Hideous star goddesses of Aztec lore, and effectively the big bass of Aztec religion. The Aztec gods are often stereotyped as bloodthirsty killers who accept tons of human sacrifice, but there\'s actually a practice reason for that - the gods needed blood to stay strong enough to fight the Tzitzimime, who would eat them alive otherwise! AUUUGGGGGHHH! Solar eclipses were said to be caused by them attacking Tonatiuh. Ice-user who comes with Will of Frost.

Personality notes: Very, very scary old lady, who actively enjoys frightening people.

ENIGMA KAMA

Character notes: The Hindu god of sexual love, son of Vishnu and Lakshmi. His Vahana is a parrot and like the Roman Cupid, he can make people fall in love using arrows. The infamous Kama Sutra is dedicated to him. He is one of the best Gun users in the game, another one that can last much longer than you\'d think.

Personality notes: Hedonistic Love Freak.

Barong: Come, young one! Your lady waits beyond!

Yep, behind the next boss door is Inanna. As when we encountered her at the Fudo Temple, she demands Danu give her her power back, which Danu and Nozomi refuse, as they need it to protect Fairykind.

Halphas: Favoring fairies over other kinds of demons? I could so slap you with a discrimination suit right now...

Nanashi: Give Toki back, you bitch.

We can choose to attack Inanna or reason with her, for Anarchy and Peace points respectively. Choosing \"reason with\" reveals Toki\'s still alive inside her, and she begs for our help. Either way, we have to fight.

BOSS: LADY INANNA

Level 80. Resists everything but Phys, Gun, and Almighty

Inanna certainly looks like a tough nut to crack, but despite all her hype she\'s not actually all that hard. This fight\'s gimmick is that she has a quartet of fourth-tier attacks, Raging Hellfire, Blizzard, Lightning, and Tempest, but whenever she uses one she becomes weak to the opposite element. If she uses Raging Hellfire, her weakness changes to Ice, for instance. In essence she\'s a Barrier Change Boss, but unlike the ones from SJ she\'s thankfully a massively telegraphed one.

Every so often during the battle, Toki starts to assert herself. Attempt to reason with her to de-buff the boss. You\'ll also learn some things about her character. If it wasn\'t obvious, she\'s madly in love with Nanashi, and it seems her feelings for him resulted in her actually being glad Asahi died, which allowed the Aether to take her over.

Nanashi: I mean, I value you both, Toki. I\'m gonna kick demon ass and save you both!

The payoff to all this is her reflexively attacking Nanashi, and then being horrified at it, causing her stats to drop. Later in the fight she\'ll also beg Danu for her power back, which she and Nozomi again refuse. Nozomi gets a free hit to her for about 200 damage from this. De-buff her and pay attention to her weakness and eventually, she\'ll fall.

Nanashi: Did it... finally.

Melchom: Objective one complete. The carrier for the souls is down.

Cherub: Still can\'t revive them, though. We need to find that Mitra to do that...

Toki seems fine. In fact, better than fine. She reverts back to closer to her old personality, or more accurately a middle ground between the coldhearted assassin and the frothing fangirl.

Nanashi: I... kinda like her better like this.

She also says she doesn\'t remember the fangirl phase at all.

Nanashi: But wait, that has to mean... that was INANNA that wanted to jump my bones!?

Orcus: As the commoners doth say - thou hast been punk\'d.

Danu absorbs what\'s left of Inanna, whose power causes Nozomi to gain her Awakening, adding Pierce to all her skills, sweet! Pull the pillar and head up to level five!

Bishamonten: Hm hm hm. We meet again. I figured I might join my brethren on your side, child...

Koumokuten: Lord Vaishravana... it\'s about time.

Zouchouten: One backed by all Four Heavenly Kings cannot lose!

Skadi: Wehhhhhhhhhhhhllllllll.... then I suhhhhhhhhhhhppoose I\'llllllll slihhhhhhhhhhhhp in tooooo...

Heimdall: Oh dear, Lady Skadi. Could this truly be the end times?

Fenrir: AWOOOOOOOOOOO!

KISHIN BISHAMONTEN

Character notes: The master of the Four Heavenly Kings and guardian of the North, he is the god of wealth gained through war. He originated in India as Vaishravana, but like many Buddhist gods was brought to Japan, where he became a member of the famed Seven Lucky Gods. His weapon is a short spear and he\'s often depicted carrying a miniature pagoda. Ice and Phys user.

Personality notes: As per the other Devas, again.

LADY SKADI

Character notes: The original Ice Queen, Skadi was a gorgeous Frost Giantess of Norse lore who won the heart of the harvest god Njord. However, their relationship didn\'t work out as being away from the snowy mountains made Skadi miserable. Also invented skiing; that\'s pretty cool. Ice and Dark user.

Personality notes: Draws out every word she says, like her voice is an icy wind.

Floor five is by far the most obnoxious. It\'s actually three floors - a main floor, an upper floor, and a basement, and this level\'s gimmick is that traps will periodically pop out of the floor and pull us into the basement. Our destination is the boss room on the top left of the main floor, but it\'s behind not one but two impossible-to-open valves. We\'ll need to release those.

Ganesha: Allow me. As Remover of Obstacles, I instinctively know all annoying demon stronghold puzzles.

Melchom: Why didn\'t we get him sooner?

Ganesha: Begin by heading north...

As the elephant man says, we head north to trigger a trap. This dumps us into a basement passage, at the end of which is an elevator. Take that up to reach the second floor. Head northeast to trip a trap to head down to the first floor, then immediately south of this is another trap leading to the basement. Head north and we find ourselves in a strange room with an odd organic fixture in the center, with another pillar (pillar count: six). We take it and unlock the first of the valves. We take the nearby elevator up, and head north through the door nearby to find another weird fixture with a pillar (pillar count: seven), at last unlocking the way to the boss.

Ganesha: Pretty easy, huh?

Manticore: I really don\'t like elevators...

The boss is, naturally, Mitra. He reveals that having been reborn from Inanna, he has at last achieved the enlightenment he sought as a Buddha (even though Mitra is the non-Buddhist Persian counterpart of Maitreya... whatever). And now he can enlighten us - Flynn, he states, is the reincarnation of the man from twenty-five years ago who fused with Masakado to become the Dome. And Nanashi? Is the reincarnation of that man\'s old comrade Akira, aka King Aquila Mikado!

Nanashi: I\'m royalty? For that kingdom that tried to wipe out my city? How very confusing! Explains those weird dreams, though, and why the demons were always talking about destiny and stuff.

We need to defeat Mitra to disable the barrier blocking the souls from returning to their bodies. And he\'s obviously not going to go quietly.

BOSS: FURY MITRA

Level 81. Resist Phys, Weak Fire, Resist Ice, Weak Wind, Null Light and Dark

If you thought his Maitreya form\'s \"Enlightenment\" was annoying, you ain\'t seen nothin\' yet! Mitra is packing a unique passive called \"Self-Righteous Vow\" that, whenever you hit his weakness, causes him to get a Luster Candy. Yes, really. Hitting his weakness makes him stronger. He also has Severe Judgment, a stronger version of 5.67 Billion Hands, operating by the same principle of massively powering up while Smirking. So don\'t let him do that! His attacks are primarily Phys and Ice, and he has a move called Terabreak that lets him remove Tetrakarns.

Nanashi: I think we\'re making progress here...

Once he gets low on health, though? H\'ell use a unique support skill, Self-Denial, that cancels your ability to Dekunda his stat boosts away. Thankfully, we can still buff ourselves and de-buff him. He\'s definitely the hardest boss of this level apart from the final boss, but he\'s not super-difficult.

Defeating Mitra cancels his seal, though it will still be up for a while as it wears off. Toki attains new resolve after watching the fight, finally free of Inanna and able to live her own life. Translation: She Awakens too. Piercing added to all her moves!

Nanashi: Here I come, Krishna! Prepare yourself!

Floor six of the Cosmic Egg is a straight shot up to the exit door, with a few side passages where there are items. Enter the door at the end of this area to reach the very pulsing heart of the Egg. It is here Dagda appears from Nanashi\'s phone for the last time.

Chernobog: The Axis Mundi quakes... this is the final moment of reason...

The Full Moon is near, and Dagda wants to know what Nanashi\'s going to do. He reminds us of his deal with Nanashi - revival in exchange for slaughtering every god and demon and building a new universe free of YHVH\'s control.

Danu appears once more to attempt to dissuade her son. She reminds him the the universe is full of beautiful creatures, and it is the duty of gods to maintain it, in the ways humans have observed them for millennia. Dagda fires back that he didn\'t ask to be observed into this form - he\'d rather go back to being an avatar of nature itself.

(At this point ALL NANASHI\'S DEMONS appear from his phone)

Brigid: Father... he really has gone too far this time... I fear we may have to put him down for good...

Melchom: I\'m not really on board with this destroying the universe business. It\'s where I keep my stuff.

Mithras: Melchom, you wet blanket... to return to nature itself, to transcend godhood... oh yes, I can see the appeal in that...

Cherub: Remaking everything? It was my duty to guard the Garden of the Original Sin for some time... I can say the Celtic god has a point.

Azrael: Are you mad, Cherub? It is our duty as angels to shepherd humans - God\'s chosen.

Huang Long: I cannot endure watching another massacre of this world.

Chernobog: I have already been damned; this recreation means nothing to me...

(The DEMONS argue among themselves over what path should be choses just as DAGDA and DANU do)

Adramelech: Oh for the love of Judy Garland, SHUT IT! This decision is his alone!

(Cut to: NOZOMI, DANU, and the other FAIRIES, looking nervous)

(Cut to: MELCHOM, BELIAL, NEBIROS, and the GOETIANS, stone-faced)

(Cut to: HALLELUJAH, looking anxious)

(Cut to: THE FOUR TYRANTS, MITHRAS grinning like a maniac, the others somber)

(Cut to: QUETZALCOATL, INTI and the other LATIN AMERICAN GODS, waiting patiently)

(Cut to: GASTON, looking increasingly angry)

(Cut to: ATHENA and the GREEK GODS, silent and patient)

(Cut to: NAVARRE, looking scared out of his mind)

(Cut to: ZHONG KUI, the FOUR BEASTS, and the CHINESE PANTHEON, increasingly antsy)

(Cut to: BRIGID, CU CHULAINN, and the CELTIC GODS, looking mournful)

(Cut to: TOKI, looking simultaneously lovestruck and dreading)

(Cut to: THOTH, OGUN and the EGYPTIAN AND AFRICAN GODS, calm and collected)

(Cut to: NANASHI\'S ORIGINAL PARTY, KATAKIRAUWA, GOBLIN, NADJA et al. looking really freaked out)

(Cut to: NANASHI, who turns to DAGDA. His mouth opens)
