Manga Chapter 18: The Greatest Hetzing You'll Never See

As the Jagdtiger advances, Yukari comments on how powerful it is. Not unlike how she did with the Maus came out, she has a bad habit of being distracted by gushing over the enemy's tanks. As it fires, she screams in terror.

Saori notes that somehow, the other tanks are unharmed, but Yukari notes the difference between Black Forest's power and Oarai's, which they couldn't completely offset through a terrain advantage.

Miho orders a withdrawal, although the wording (at least in the fan translation I read) seems to imply that she's less satisfied with how many casualties they inflicted than she is in the anime.

The Hetzer arrives on scene for Miho's plan, and the translators note that it has different sound effects for the engine. Miho orders her group to fire to prevent the Hetzer from being detected, and Leopon briefly wonders if they can bust the enemy's suspension, before realizing that they don't have tires.

The plan works and the group, inflicting yet another casualty on Black Forest, escapes, with Yukari amazed at how Miho threw them into disarray; I notice that some Oarai characters are taking other characters' chances to observe things.

After some interference from the smoke screen, Erika is enraged about how "a small-time team" is causing them problems, but Maho tells her to stay calm.

Miho points out their destination by the river while sending Turtle Team to cause some more disturbance. Miho observes that Black Forest's tanks are heavier than Oarai's, so even with their powerful engines, they can't keep it up forever. This is similar to what Darjeeling and Orange Pekoe observed in the anime.

Miho's tanks go in a zig-zag, and Erika, irritated by how they're going, loses the drive train while trying to pursue them. She's exasperated when another tank also loses its drive train.

Miho says they've lost their pursuers, and Yukari concludes that everything they achieved is a result of many things- taking advantage of the terrain, staying mobile, knowing the enemy, good leadership, and spirited effort from the team. That's a nice analysis of what was necessary for Oarai's success.

The river crossing begins, with Miho ordering her tanks not to stop, lest they get stuck and be unable to move at all. Sure enough, Rabbit Team runs into engine problems, and Yukari has an Oh, Crap reaction at the unfortunate timing for this. The chapter ends with Black Forest closing in and Anglerfish Team debating what to do next.

Next Installment: In a moment of crisis, Miho must think outside the box to win and uphold her ideals.

About the Hetzer's specific sound: what the translators actually point out (in this manga and in the Maginot spinoff, from the same mangaka) is that the mangaka likes to give specific sounds to specific tanks. They even pointed to a youtube vid of a one of such tanks restored and running. Amusingly, the "custom sound" was quite spot-on.

erana,

That's an interesting detail about the sound effects. I may get to Maginot's spinoff at some point.
