And we’re back for the penultimate playthrough! It is finally time to fulfill a certain someone’s wish, so for this outing we will at last take Naoya up on his offer to become the demon overlord.

As I said before there are two ways to unlock this route, either through Naoya himself or through Kaido. Unlocking one does not preclude the other, and the only difference is the Day 6 “prologue”. Once Day 7 begins the two fold right into each other. I’ll be entering this from the Naoya side, so at the decision point I’m heading to his apartment at Aoyama. He’s already recruited Kaido, as the idea of fighting God Himself appeals to his inner Chaos Hero. We do have the option of making one last plea for Naoya to help Atsuro with his plan to rewrite the server, but us agreeing to become the King of Bel is the only thing he’ll listen to.

Unfortunately this causes an exodus as Midori, Keisuke, and even Yuzu leave the party, disagreeing with our decision. In their place Kaido officially joins (and we can finally fuse Pazuzu) and Naoya tells the crestfallen Atsuro that this way humanity will be forever free of God’s ordeals and have the power of demons on their side, so it won’t be as bad as he thinks, depending on Akira’s actions of course. Kaido asks about the final option, and Naoya responds that the government would be foolish not to recognize the power of an overlord and negotiate. At least one person’s confident that everything’s going to be just peachy.

Last Day - King of Demons

The next morning we awaken at the usual Miyashita Park spot. Kaido cheerfully greets Akira as “Mr. Overlord”, and from this point forward his dialogue options run a binary between normal and cartoon-evil, like an even poorer man’s version of the Paragon/Renegade dichotomy. Naoya soon arrives, bearing what he calls “minor” bad news: just like in Atsuro’s route the deadline for the final option has been moved forward, to 12:00. Atsuro panics at the news, but his teacher brushes this development off, claiming that it can be easily compensated for. For now, they’ll focus on taking out the first Bel, Jezebel, and he’s got a plan for getting inside Amane to deal with her.

But first, more recruits! The scene with Mari joining the party plays out here, and on this route it’s expanded a bit as Kaido’s reluctant to have her aboard. And there’s one more person after her who will be joining us, the self-styled defender of love and rage, Black Frost! Black Frost is a secret team leader, and he’ll join on this route and Gin’s if you saved him on Day 6. He’s a bit kooky compared to the rest of Team Overlord, claiming to be following the way of the samurai in helping us out, but as Atsuro says if they’re going to fight for the throne of the demon king then having an actual demon along with them should be okay. Both he and Naoya are at Lv. 46 and Naoya is more-or-less a male Yuzu stat-wise. He lacks her restricted movement range though, so he makes a very good replacement. Black Frost is a little bit weaker offensively though his Magic and Strength are about equal. He’s got innate reflection of Fire and Ice but is weak to Force and he’s been promoted from a Jaki to a Fiend so he can equip Auto Skills. Unfortunately he’s the third character who can only move three panels.

Our first event of the day is a battle one at Shiba Park. As a prelude Naoya explains to Atsuro how Jezebel was sent inside Amane by Belberith, and his plan is to more or less do a smash ‘n grab, kidnapping Amane so that they can hook her mind up to a COMP (presumably through electrodes and stuff I’m guessing; this whole thing reminds me of Megaman Battle Network 3’s Pulse Transmission System) and take advantage of the Demon Summoning Program’s thought-harnessing abilities to manifest their own thoughts inside Amane’s mind, and thus fight Jezebel. Atsuro’s a bit flabbergasted that he was able to program something like that.

Anyway, to the map screen, where we confront Amane. Only, it’s not Amane we’re facing technically but Remiel. And he’s accompanied by a veritable battalion of Shomonkai members.

Naoya Mission 1
  • All enemies must be defeated
  • The whole party cannot die

There are seven Believers to fight through to get to Remiel, so again this mission would probably be rough for someone playing it for their first go-around, but it’s not very challenging for me at this point, since I can pretty much beat anyone around their levels by belching in their general direction. All of them seem to have Culebres though, so they will gang up on you with ranged attacks. It’s actually possible to have Gin and Azuma get involved in the battle, though I’ve never done it myself so I’m not sure how. I think maybe you have to unlock the “look for clues about Aya’s whereabouts” subplot but not tell Gin about the meeting in Roppongi? I dunno for sure, so anyway Remiel’s the only boss here, and since we’ve allied ourselves with Cain it’s no more Mr. Nice Angel for us.
Remiel (Lv. 52)

HP/MP

  • 495/497
Affinities
  • Resists Fire, Ice, Elec, Force, and Mystic
Command Skills
  • Megido - Deals moderate Almighty damage to entire enemy party.
  • Holy Dance - Deals several random hits of Almighty damage to multiple targets.
  • Mediarahan - Fully restores entire party’s HP.
Passive Skills
  • Anti-Most - Grants resistance to all elements other than Physical and Almighty.
  • Mana Aid - Recovers 10% max MP at the end of battle.
  • Mana Surge - MP raised by 30%.
Auto Skill
  • Magic Yin - Raises team’s magical damage by 50% while doubling MP cost at the start of battle at the cost of being unable to use Physical attacks.
Demons
  • Ukano Mitama, Rangda

Unless it pops up somewhere on Naoya’s 8th day, this is the only place you can crack Magic Yin from, and it’s also the last skill I need to crack period, so yay. Remiel doesn’t lasy very long against us and collapses, lamenting that he can’t bring his full power to bear while he’s holding back Jezebel.
Completing the mission earns us 2200 EXP and 1500 macca.
With the Shomonkai defeated and Amane unconscious and no doubt slung over Kaido’s shoulder like a sack of potatoes, Naoya leads us to the Diet Building where he’s set up a demon-repelling ward so that we can fight inside Amane’s soul in peace. After reexplaining the whole Your Mind Makes It Real thing he hooks everyone up to a COMP (again, through electrodes I assume) and once more we enter the verdant Cartesian Garden, which once more becomes a molten hellscape once Jezebel shows herself. Naoya says that since he’s running the program, if he’s defeated here then they’ll be trapped here forever.
Naoya Mission 2
  • Jezebel must be defeated
  • Naoya and Amane cannot die
  • Naoya must be dispatched

Since I’m on New Game+ the trick here is to damage Jezebel while being very careful not to accidentally kill Amane in the process since the damage still transfers. So until she wakes up I just stick with basic physicals. Aside from that the only difference from the last Jezebel battle is that Amane is of course far less grateful upon awakening, accusing us of weakening Remiel’s strength. In the pre-battle talk Naoya suggested that Amane’s soul itself might try to fight us but nothing like that actually happens, which is a shame. It would’ve been a nice new wrinkle to deal with.
Completing the mission earns us 2500 EXP and 1500 macca.
Amane says that the next time we meet we’ll be enemies and we return to the real world. Here Atsuro goes off on Naoya when he says it’s time for the next step, accusing him of keeping them in the dark on his motives and making all of their decisions for them, like they’re just pawns. Naoya’s response is that yes, that’s exactly what we are to him, but he does explain about the Tokyo barrier and the Devas, so guess what we’re doing next? The Devas are a lot less “A Worthy Opponent!” this time around.
Naoya Mission 3
  • Bishamon must be defeated
  • The whole party cannot die

Excuse me, I’m feeling a little gassy...
Completing the mission earns us 2500 EXP and 1800 macca.
Next up, right after Kaido tries forcing his philosophy on Atsuro...
Naoya Mission 4
  • Zouchou and Koumoku must be defeated
  • The whole party cannot die

UUURRRRRRUPP
Completing the mission earns us 2700 EXP and 2100 macca.
With the giant portal appearing in the sky and there being only an hour and a half until the final option is enacted, Naoya decides that it’s time to change gears slightly on the others’ suggestion and meet with the government to see if they can get a reprieve, since time is tight. After he gets on his soapbox to rant about how God and the angels will eliminate anyone who doesn’t follow His will, again sidestepping his own responsibility in starting the lockdown.

So we go to Akasaka Tunnel and things pretty much go as you’d expect. Since Akira literally can’t speak for himself Naoya takes charge and essentially bullies Fushimi into asking his superiors for more time. He calls it a “frank and honest” negotiation, a stupendously rich statement. But he says that Fushimi will now do whatever he can to get more time, so the typical bureaucratic slowness of the government will buy them some more time. So it’s off to Roppongi to fight Belzaboul.

Naoya Mission 5
  • Belzaboul must be defeated
  • The whole party cannot die

Squish.
Completing the mission earns us 2950 EXP and 2400 macca.
After being given the Founder’s backstory again, this time from Naoya, Fushimi arrives to let us know that he’s managed to get the deadline extended by not one, but two hours. Given that that’s four gameplay events, that’s more than enough time. Especially since as the crew prepares to ascend the Mori Tower we’re accosted by Sariel, Anael, and a host of generic Kazfiel/Aniel. They’ve recognized that no human can stop us now and they implore Akira to become the Messiah like they originally wanted. Naoya says that it’s too bad for them and they lament that Abel has truly lost his “soul’s memory”. Once again our hero has no idea what’s being talked about, and the angels lament that we’re following the man who once killed us. Well, to battle then.
Naoya Mission 6
  • All angels must be defeated
  • The whole party cannot die
  • Naoya must be dispatched

The reason that Naoya has to be on the field is because as the mission goes on he’ll engage in repartee with Sarieal and Anael, denying their further attempts to reason with Akira and being outed as Cain.
Sariel (Lv. 62)

Anael (Lv. 62)

  • Resists Physical, Force, and Mystic; Absorbs Fire
Command Skills

Field Skill

These two are the same as when we fought them on Yuzu’s route, so down they go. I guess Naoya did get to fulfill his Doom Marine fantasy from that route as well.
Completing the mission earns us 3050 EXP and 2600 macca.
Afterwards Naoya espouses the traditional Megami Tensei depiction of God and says that man doesn’t need a world like that, and that we don’t need to kiss His ass. We can also ask him about Abel and Cain, but he unsurpisingly refuses to elaborate on the subject. Well, up the Mori Tower we go, with Atsuro and Kaido providing the complaining, the latter thinking it’s ridiculous that the overlord and his followers should have to put up with something like this. Once at the chapel the Founder is incensed that Naoya has betrayed him, summons Belberith, and you know the drill by now.
Naoya Mission 7
  • Belberith must be defeated
  • The whole party cannot die

This time Belberith actually becomes happy when we defeat him, now confident that the Bels will be reunited and rule the demons as it should be. Uh, thanks for the vote of confidence?
Completing the mission earns us 3200 EXP and 2800 macca.
Time to summon Babel again. After everyone still on the team offers their support and camaraderie (even Naoya, who says that while he hasn’t been an “ideal brother” he supports Akira more than anyone else), once more the cylinder slams into the roof. This time Babel’s face takes the form of a woman (though from some angles it looks like a young man; sometimes it’s hard to tell with Kaneko’s art style), and the trial commences.
Naoya Mission 8
  • Babel must be defeated
  • The whole party cannot die

The first phase is the same as ever in terms of layout, but this time Babel’s moveset has actually been given an overhaul compared to Amane’s and Atsuro’s routes:
Babel (Lv. 70)

HP/MP

  • ???/???
Affinities
  • Resists Physical, Fire, Ice, Elec, and Force; Nulls Mystic
Command Skills
  • Judgement - A Mystic-based attack that halves the entire enemy party’s HP.
  • Shield All - Protects self with a barrier that blocks the next non-Almighty attack.
  • Megido - Deals moderate Almighty damage to entire enemy party.
Passive Skills
  • Anti-All - Grants resistance to all elements other than Almighty.
  • Life Aid - Recovers 10% max HP at the end of battle.
  • Attack All - Normal physical attacks hit the entire enemy party.
Racial Skill
  • King’s Gate - Has an attack range of three panels and cannot move.

Judgement can be a big pain so having ways to automatically recover HP like Life Aid/Life Lift, Victory Cry, and Healing is what I’d recommend. That’s the main attraction here anyway, as the second and third phases of the battle are identical to how they were on Amane’s route, Bel boss rush (during which Atsuro seems to be completely losing his shit) and all.
Babel once more assimilates with the room below and Akira officially becomes the King of Bel. Like in Amane’s route his race is changed to “Bel” and one of his character portraits gets a slight change: instead of wearing an angry expression with his “angry/determined” pose, he has a harsher, almost expectant smirk. Atsuro congratulates us, though admits that he’d be happier if Yuzu were here with them, and we can either thank him for worrying or simply shrug it off depending on how much you think overlordship should change our hero. Naoya says that we must act quickly and officially proclaim our new title, to make the angels realize that the lockdown is futile and to leave mankind in peace to focus on us instead (ah ha ha ha, that’s surprisingly naive of him, as we shall soon see...). He tells Akira to declare that demonkind will now rise up against God, and we’re treated to scenes around Tokyo of the characters reacting to what’s happening. Fushimi reports that the demons are leaving humans alone but are instead flocking to Roppongi, while the giant portal in the sky remains. In Miyashita Park Yuzu and Midori realize what’s going on, and Yuzu hopes that Akira’s heart can stay human, despite all that’s happened to him and what’s going to happen as he fights God. Keisuke in Akihabara says that he can only pray that the world that’s being created won’t be ruled by power, and the Gigolo can’t wait to see the battle unfold...

The ending narration, accompanied by an illustration of Akira in a black cape (which at least looks less silly than the Messiah one since he doesn’t have a stoned expression on his face; evocative of Disgaea though) says that while the lockdown in Tokyo was ultimately lifted, it was not the end of things by a long shot, for demons began appearing all over the world as they gathered to join the overlord’s army and the war against God commenced. The only thing mankind can do in the face of this is to simply pray that they won’t get dragged into it, and naturally Metatron has some words for us:

You who are a son of man, yet became king of Pandemonium...

You desire to crush underfoot the old order and begin the new, forsaking His command passed down since the dawn of time.
You have chosen to revolt against the Lord.
You and I are now enemies.

If you truly wish to protect man, bear your burden and fight to the end...
Until the day fate chooses the one that shall survive...

That was surprisingly less condemning than I expected. Well, after the credits roll the silhouettes of Naoya and Kaido are half-filled in on the save screen, so I’ll be seeing you next on their 8th day, which is a little different from the other two.

Naoya makes a few interesting points during his "negotiations" with Fushimi, like how "angels won't tell you anything there's the slightest chance you could figure out yourself". An anti-villainous protagonist should still have gotten the option to smack him for dodging blame and accusations, though.
