Roll With the Punches

Now this is interesting. We’re (re)starting the Eagle Tournament now and the first round is pitting me against the version exclusive Navi already. That’s rarely happened to me before, usually they’re kept until either the second or third. Unfortunately, looking at the lineup it seems that I’ll be fighting Burnerman again, so his opposite will have to wait until the third playthrough.

Anyway, this scenario is a bit of a novelty, since our opponent is Roll of all Navis. Lan and Megaman are justifiably surprised at this turn of events, though since Roll isn’t exactly built for Net Battling they wonder if she’s really up to this. Simultaneously in Mel Square is a scene with Yai and Mayl talking about pretty much the same thing. Mayl asks Yai if Roll can train with Glyde, both to prep for the battle as well as because Roll’s apparently being stalked by some Navi.

So of course as soon as Lan exits the castle Yai runs up to him begging for help, since the stalker Navi seems to have abducted Roll. Naturally. Anyway, we meet with Glyde (oh hey, so he does get another appearance) in Park Area 1 who tells us that the Navi took Roll to Park Area 3 (surprise, surprise). There he has her trapped behind a door and surrounded by viruses because he doesn’t want her to get hurt in the battle and whatnot. We have to haul ass over there, find the locked door, learn from Roll that the Navi has gone shopping, find him in ACDC Area 2, beat the rap out of him, getting him to fork over the key, and then go all the way back to unlock the door. Never during this entire scenario does Roll just jack out, since there doesn’t seem to be anything preventing her from doing so. Though at least she put her captivity to good use in learning how to control the viruses.

But the scenario isn’t over yet. After all that Roll wants to test out her speed on Megaman, so we have to play a game of tag with her inside of the stuffed animal in Mayl’s room. This is very, very annoying since she doesn’t run or glide around the stage. Instead she teleports, and the hit detection is just as potentially wonky as it was when trying to catch the cyberbats during Shademan’s scenario. After a few rounds of this we can finally go to the stadium to have it out.

Roll Alpha

HP: 1000

Element: Normal

Attacks:

  • Roll Flash – Roll appears in front of Megaman and smacks him with the antennae on her helmet several times for 20 damage per hit.
  • Roll Arrow – Roll fires an arrow down one row that deals 60 damage and destroys any chips or Program Advances that are in Megaman’s queue.
  • Roll Dance – Roll quickly teleports to another panel, taking no damage from an incoming attack.
  • Roll Charm – Roll summons a Mettaur 2, Valgear, Mega Gaia, or Silly virus to the field.

Roll is far from an offensive powerhouse, but she’s really fast. I think this battle is one of the few instances where I found an actual use for Thunder Soul, since it’s very difficult to keep her locked down otherwise. And of course there’s also the viruses to content with. Now that we’re on a higher difficulty they’ve been beefed up accordingly, and while they are rather basic families the Valgear and Mega Gaia can mess up an inattentive player. That’s basically Roll in a nutshell, not too strong, but has some gimmicks that can provide an annoyance.

Afterwards Lan asks Mayl why she took part in the tournament, and she replies that it’s a secret. After she leaves the arena Yai tells Lan that it’s because she wants to one day be able to protect the “someone” that’s always protecting her. Predictably, Lan has to ask who that “someone” is. Even Megaman gets offended at that one. Anyway, Soul time.

Roll Soul

  • Activated by sacrificing a Recovery-attribute chip
  • Charge Shot becomes the Roll Arrow attack
  • Whenever a battle chip is used Megaman recovers ten percent of his maximum HP.

Not really worth it, since most good folders eschew recovery for defense, like the Invisibility chip. I guess Roll Arrow’s chip-destruction effect is useful for linked play.

Roll Beta is now found at a dead end in the section of Town Area 3 that can only be reached via Park Area 1. Her chip attack is the classic “damage nearest enemy then heal some HP” effect it’s always had.

...Yeah, Lan really is an idiot when it comes to matters of the heart. On the plus side, at least he's not a hopeless idiot, as proven by the ending of BN 6...

Jacking out would make too much sense. Everyone in the game has a stupidity quota they need to fill.

That comment's pretty funny in light of the next scenario.

Have you noticed that with her chip-destruction attack Roll is primed to fight Normal Navis, Heel Navis, and Megaman, but not most specialized Navis?

That's normal Navis, heel Navis, and any Navi operated by Lan (as BN 5 proves, other Navis may not need chips as much as a generic or Mega Man, but they are far more effective with them).

But yes, you're right. That means Roll is surprising powerful, she just never gets a chance to show it off...
