It looks like the Eagle Tournament will progress in a similar fashion to the Den Battle Tournament, as our round 2 opponent is once again a version-exclusive Navi, Windman. As usual, Lan is soon approached by his opponent’s operator, a young woman named Lilly. She’s from a place called Scissor Island where her Navi is worshiped as a wind god. Um, okie-dokie. Since he’s usually so powerful, Lilly has something called a Grass Flute that acts as a Restraining Bolt so that Windman doesn’t go out of control. Huh, some god! Lan soon says farewell and takes his leave, and once he’s gone Lilly takes a sip of “water” from the flask hanging around her neck and instantly turns into an angry drunk that orders Windman to destroy Lan and Megaman. Well then…

Once Lan leaves the castle he decides to quickly run home to get something to eat, but there’s a scream from Mel Square and he discovers Lilly, who’s somehow teleported over here, being menaced by the Dracky robot. So we just have to jack in, ride the raft to the end of the Cyberworld, and then delete a virus to deactivate the bot. During which my game decides to freeze. Lovely. Luckily I barely lose any progress, and soon enough Lan’s on his way once again, apparently taking no notice of the fact that Lilly looks like she’s about to break his face in half. As if it isn’t obvious enough, once he’s gone she complains about how her plan to weaken Megaman failed and that it’s time for drastic measures. Which apparently involves checking Lan as he’s leaving the park so that he drops his PET into the big fountain outside of the gate. But unfortunately for her this future is waterproofed, so Megaman is still fine.

When Lan finally does get home to have his snack, he’s visited by Lilly again, now sober (geez, how much time is there before the match?). She’s there to ask for help, since somehow Windman’s seal has been undone and he’s running loose on the Net. She doesn’t remember doing it either, or Lan shutting down the Dracky robot. Windman’s whipped up a giant storm in Park Area, but if Megaman plays a few notes on the Grass Flute, he’ll calm down. Or so Lilly says. So off to Park Area we go.

As Lilly described, there is indeed a giant windstorm brewing in Park Area. Not only is wind blowing during battle, drawing Megaman and viruses to the front or back of their areas, but tornadoes are blowing around on the overworld, and if Megaman gets caught in one he’ll be blown back to the start of the area. It is under these conditions that we have to make our way to the back of Park Area 3 again, where Megaman finds Windman himself, powering the tempest. With a few notes from the Grass Flute he calms down, thanks Megaman for stopping him, and jacks out, as the tournament match will soon start. Back to the Castillo castle, where Lilly once again turns up totally sloshed and belligerent. Lan and Megaman catch on to the fact that she’s drunk this time (and the game actually says that outright instead of dancing around the issue), and Windman admits that that flask of her’s is probably filled with sake instead of water, but the battle must go on.

Windman

HP: 800

Element: Normal

Attacks:

  • Bird Rush – A flock of birds swoop down the field for 40 damage per hit.
  • Propeller Bomb – Windman sends out several floating bombs towards Megaman that behave like slow-moving Rattons and deal 40 damage.
  • Whirlwind – Windman throws out several small homing tornadoes at Megaman that behave like boomerangs and deal 40 damage per hit.
  • Monsoon – Wind will constantly be blowing, either blowing Megaman to the back of his area or pulling him to the front depending on direction.

I had a bit of a tough time with this battle since the constant wind blowing isn’t just a mere nuisance, it’s designed to make his attacks as difficult to dodge as possible, and he’ll change the direction in time to ensure that his attacks land. Still, not a bad boss. The main issue again comes down to not having adequate resources on hand.

I like the touch of Windman’s tassel blowing in different directions depending on the wind.

After the battle Lilly sobers up and promises to practice and discipline herself, and we get our second Soul, Wind Soul.

Wind Soul

  • Activated by sacrificing Wind-attribute chips
  • The Mega Buster becomes an Air Shot attack
  • Charge Shot becomes the Wind Racket attack
  • Wind-attribute chips are powered up by ten points
  • Upon activation enemy auras and barriers are blown away
  • Wind constantly pulls enemies to the front of their area
  • Megaman can traverse empty or broken panels and is unaffected by panel type

Not that bad a Soul. Pretty useful for setting up certain attacks and getting enemies into range.

So I guess don’t drink and operate is the lesson here.

And what a lesson it is.

I am a bit saddened that Windman never appeared in another Battle Network game besides 4, since I felt there was some more storytelling potential with him. Though I might actually just miss him more because I liked his design when I first played.

It would lessen the blow of certain people in this game not showing up again in the series if you actually got to spend time with them in this game. Why does Megaman Soul Unison with the Navi of a girl who spends most of the scenario trying to kill him, but he doesn't with someone like, say, Topman?

Anyway, in Blue Moon, your next Soul is from either Woodman (Sal's Navi who is tricked into doing terrorist acts) or Metalman (who Lan doesn't remember from BN 3 for whatever reason).
