“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the game.”

Welcome back to the Liveblog, folks! First and foremost, today’s Installment title is a quote attributed to Randy Pausch. Secondly, right before our next big battle, I saw that there was a battle with two Risen on the same spot. Taking them both on at once led to some cash, a Barrier staff reward, and the following Support Conversations:

  • Yukari & Tharja (C-Rank)
  • Libra & Gaius (B-Rank)
  • Lon’qu & Gregor (B-Rank)
  • Donnel & Maribelle (S-Rank)

And as for what to do next…well, I thought that now would be a good time to check out another of the earliest DLC missions, and take it on while the enemies are still at least somewhat interesting to fight.

XENOLOGUE: Champions of Yore 2

Walking into the Outrealms, Chrom wonders if we’re in the same area as before. He wants to get out of there before a certain old coot shows up, but before Chrom can even finish his sentence…

Old Hubba: You’re back! You really came back! …I can’t believe you came back. I mean, of course you came back! Just as I divoned! …Divined? …Divinidated?

Chrom tries to get out of there, but Hubba’s glad we’re taking pity on him, talking about how his wife would be so glad and stuff. Chrom just wants to fight the Einherjar cards and leave, and right on cue, the beautiful thief that took them from Hubba pops in…and it’s Aversa. Well, a version of Aversa from an alternate, ruined world, apparently. After a bit of her taunting, Hubba helps by using some of the cards we’d returned to him in Yore 1 to summon allies: Eirika from Sacred Stones, Lyn from Sword of Seals, and Celica from Gaiden.

We then see the map that we will be fighting on. It’s the same throwback to the very first Fire Emblem’s first battle that was used for Yore 1, save that our allies are at either end, and working towards the boss in the middle. Our opponents are Level 9 to 12 versions of male Fire Emblem protagonists, such as Seliph, Sothe, and Prince Marth (our main boss). Chrom noted how the Prince Marth that Aversa summoned seemed different from the one we’d befriended in Yore 1, and Hubba explains that even cards of the same person can have different appearances and skills. The prince is convinced that we’re there to kidnap Lady Aversa, and the Einherjar can’t be reasoned with…not that Hubba helps any. Looks like it’s time to fight some legendary heroes!

  • Chrom, Sully, Yukari, & Cordelia, and Eirika: Began the battle on the map’s left side. Sully and Chrom visited a village, getting an Ephraim Lance, while Cordelia had a small chat with the NPC about being cautious in battle and not losing friends. As neither they nor the other group were in enemy territory at the first turn’s end, our foes stood still, though Roy muttered aloud that this fight didn’t feel right, and they shouldn’t be doing this. As NPCs moved forward, our protagonists charged towards the foes, the pegasus knight having a bit of dialogue with Seliph before defeating him. Sadly, the enemies ganged up on Eirika and removed her in battle right after. But, at least two enemies (Alm and Leif) were both slain by counters when they went after the Shepherds. Cordelia nearly died when Prince Marth also moved towards her, but thanks to Yukari pitching in during the counter, that Einherjar’s life was cut short before the enemy’s turn concluded. The two also worked together to defeat Sigurd, who would’ve slain Cordelia if she hadn’t dodged. In the Third and final turn, Chrom took out Seliph with the Falchion (getting some EXP from a shiny spot in the process), and Yukari blew Ephraim away with a Wind tome.
  • Stahl, Kellam, & Sumia, and Lyn & Celica: Began the battle on the map’s right side. Sumia talked with Lyn and tried to be cordial, while the other playable characters visited a village and received a Nosferatu tome. Kellam & Stahl didn’t charge directly towards the nearest foes, instead sticking near the NPCs; Sumia was also cautious, but dealt a bit of damage with a Javelin as she flew just outside the middle of the battlefield. As the enemies moved, Roy said that he couldn’t let doubt weaken him as he attacked Kellam, but died from a Pair Up counter immediately after doing no damage to the knight. Ike shared the exact same fate, and Kellam learned the Indoor Fighter skill in the process. Sadly, Sothe survived when he attacked (and was blocked, thankfully enough, as he had an Armorslayer). Lyn took some damage from Eliwood (ironic, I guess), but on the Ally Turn, Celica defeated Sothe. Lyn also did some good damage to Eliwood before being defeated by his counter. I let Stahl get the final hit of the map, defeating Eliwood, and leaving our last NPC alive…not that you get anything from protecting the girls.
    • Turns: 3
    • Heroes: I don’t think it officially stated a hero…but I think Cordelia & Yukari killed the most foes.

Aversa still got away with most of the cards, which Hubba soothseed/soothsaw/soothsawed. Apparently, she had asked to be his apprentice one day, but eventually stole all his Einherjar cards and vanished…after using feminine wiles to get Hubba to show her where he kept them, of course. Hubba’s hopeful that we can catch her next time, and when Chrom says that there probably won’t BE a next time, Hubba ‘has another vision’ about us in the future, defeating Aversa and getting more of his family treasure back. At least that treasure includes a tome containing a special skill that Hubba will then give us. With a sigh, Chrom says he’ll consider coming back, though Hubba says that there’s no rush. And finally, he gives us a new Einherjar card for our army: the Roy we had just fought. Roy apologizes for being deceived, and asks to fight alongside us as recompense. He doesn’t know much about other realms, and asks if we like our world; telling him yes seems to please him, and he’s eager to learn more. We then officially recruit him, even though we’ll probably never use him in this play through.

So, that battle ended quickly. And we only got one Support from it: Yukari & Cordelia (C-Rank). Perhaps the next battle will be more action-packed…but that’ll have to wait until the next installment. Thanks for reading, folks, and here’s hoping that your evenings are pleasant!
