Chapter 45: After the Storm

After the battle, Mat stares at the head of Couladin, who he’d managed to kill in a hard fight. Now the men he led consider him their true leader, and insist on making a banner for him. Rand wakes up to find that Moiraine healed him, using the last of her strength after tending to the other wounded, and Aviendha is upset at him taking such a risk. And now he has to deal again with Meilan and the other Tairen nobles he sent here for trying to kill him, plus the actual Cairheinen.

So…Jordan just skipped right over the climax of this storyline? There wasn’t something else he could have cut out to ease up on the book’s length a little? This is such a bizarre writing choice I really have no idea how to respond to it. Rand’s new problems are pretty good on their own, but now they’re tainted from following this.

I actually considered bringing this up during your last update, but didn't want to spoil it. Really, it does kind of suck that we don't get to see Mat's battle, no doubt about that. That being said, the climax of the book is still to come, and I think it's one of the better ones in terms of the series.
