Chapter 44: The Lesser Sadness

Sammael sends his own lightning strikes, destroying the tower and killing several of Rand’s forces, including Jolien. He, Egwene, and Aviendha are badly wounded, but get on their horses and head closer to where they can get a better idea how the battle is going. Mat is doing better, as he survives three encounters with the Shaido, but then hears that Couladin himself is approaching.

As Rand holds onto the Power for longer and longer, his memories of Lews Therin become confused with his own, and Sulin helps him back to the camp, where the wounded are being kept. Lan tells him the battle was won while he was off somewhere, and when he lets go of the Power, he faints.

Here’s a first: I’m now much more interested in Mat’s story than Rand’s. He’s pushed in a largely observing role due to his powers, while Mat gets to be in the middle of the fighting, and prove himself to men who doubted him. And with him about to fight Couladin, it should only get better.

Sammael was at this fight? I'd forgotten that any of the Forsaken were. :/
