A change of plans: I was going to write about Badly Drawn Kitties today but I just don’t feel like it. That’s the entirety of my excuse. So yeah. You get El Goonish Shive instead (finally). Enjoy.

El Goonish Shive [Trope Page] is... weird. Not weird bad, but more like weird interesting. Oh, and it’s also an action adventure dramatic comedy webcomic.

After a shaky start the comic picks up quite a lot, but it doesn’t really hit its stride until quite a long way in. It’s not that it was bad to start with, but it does get better. It also gets weirder but I’m overusing that word. The art evolution is nothing to scoff at either, going from this at the start to this now. That’s some pretty impressive improvement, and that improvement matches the comic as a whole.

As far as the plot goes... Well, let’s just say that it requires more suspension of disbelief than most. Not because it’s badly written or poorly executed, it’s not. It’s just that if you look at any one arc, everything seems fine, internally consistent and enjoyable to read, but if you step back and look at the comic as a whole it just doesn’t mesh together that well. There are no glaringly obvious holes or blatant outliers, but it comes off as though it wasn’t thought out in its entirety before the fact. I’m pretty sure that it was, but that’s the feeling I get (Damn complex opinions! Always making me feel like an idiot for being unable to explain you).

Ignoring that disconnection which I’m having so much trouble putting to words, the plot is pretty solid. There’s always the occasional hiccup, even in the best stories, but EGS’s is pretty damn good. Don’t get me wrong, it’s far from the best, but it’s handled well and enjoyable enough to read (if you can get past the weirdness).

It looks like this is going to be one of my shorter articles because there’s not an awful lot left to say. El Goonish Shive is an enjoyable, plot based action adventure dramatic comedy webcomic with decent art and plenty of gender bending and weirdness (and gender blending weirdness). Links up top if it sounds like your kind of thing. Thanks for reading.

The author is on the record that he took the strip too serious too fast, and his recovery from that was clumsy, leaving some threads that haven't been picked up in years.
