Egeanin spots her crony Felb about to catch Elayne and Nynaeve, and intervenes, not wanting to have to kill innocent women that he brings her. They fight the thugs off together, but Elayne is forced to use the Power. This throws Egeanin, but not having met before, they head to the inn together. Egeanin is surprised to find them just normal people, but has to leave when she learns Domon is working with them. Liandrin finds them, and uses a mind control spell to learn everything they’ve done, though a case of Exact Words means their special items are still a secret. And outside, the Seeker is still following Egeanin, very curious about what she’s up to.
Apparently that Threes Company slapstick before was just foreshadowing for this whole storyline. But it actually works, as everything makes sense and the underlying situation is still quite serious. There’s still a bit more comic relief with Elayne’s difficulties not inhaling the veil of her disguise when she talks, but that also comes off as far more natural. And of course Egeanin is now a far more interesting character, fully deserving of her own POV segments like she’s been getting.
