Chapter 22: Out of the Stone

After Rand and everyone with him, now also including Mat, leave the city, he lets them in on his real plan to use a portal stone to get to Rhuidean. And he knows it will work because of an absurdly vague trail of evidence that will probably still end up working, because he’s the hero and all. And he even picks what symbol to focus on based on luck, reasoning that if it works for Mat it should also work for him. Finally, he found an angreal in the Stone that he’s sure will amplify his magic enough to transport everyone, based on nothing. Hello, Deus ex Machina.

It’s great to see more from the portal stones, but we also see way too much of Rand basically trusting that he’s the hero of a story here. It comes off as very artificial, and I’m constantly aware during stuff like this that I’m reading something not real, that someone wrote. That isn’t usually a problem with this series, at least since it knocked off the Lord of the Rings rip-offs, but now it’s coming back.

He's being overconfident; he'll be like this for a bit longer yet.

Oh, and I'd less call it a Deus Ex Machina and more Because The Plot Says So (Sad that's not a trope title)... Although I suppose there's not much difference.
