As Rand leaves his room after talking to Lanfear, he discovers a ton of Fades and Trollocs are attacking. So he just runs through the whole castle, getting whatever help he can and trying to keep any survivors going. Then a Trolloc kills another one to save his life, and he sees two Fades fighting. After another showdown with Lanfear where they both show how they can neutralize each other, he goes back to get Callandor. And once he has it, he becomes a God-Mode Sue, killing every Trolloc and Fade with a thought. Moiraine is just as surprised as everyone else, but lets us know all our heroes survived.
A lot of the battle is very exciting stuff, feeling almost like one of the climaxes, but then Rand ends it by using a cheat code, and it just gets tedious reading about him walking around zapping bad guys with no effort. At least there’s a pretty effective Tearjerker afterward with his desperate attempts to bring back a little girl he was seconds too late to save. And now the series is obligated to explain why he doesn’t just bust out the Avatar State all the time, which may or may not be satisfying.
