Chapter 36: Daughter of the Night

Hopper comes to Perrin in a dream, and shows him to a place in the dreamworld that the Forsaken are using for meetings. The man in charge of the assassins in Tar Valon is killed for letting Mat escape, and then the rest are sent away, before Lanfear arrives. And then something quite unexpected: it turns out Ba’alzamon is not the Dark One, but I guess just the Forsaken who speaks for him. It certainly explains why Jordan has kept on calling him that. Plus, it seems Lanfear is doing something on her own without the Dark One’s approval, which will probably contribute to the book’s climax. And then he invades Rand’s dream and gets burned for it.

He tells Moiraine about it, but she’s not much help, though she does explain that Zarine is a very girly girl name, hence why she wants to change it. And now more of Rand, as he abruptly kills a woman and all her guards with a sword he makes from fire, with absolutely no context. I’ll wait and see on this one.

We get a new twist to what the villains are doing, plus maybe the start of an Enemy Civil War if Lanfear has anyone on her side with whatever she’s up to. And of course, the quite surprising Rand scene, where we’re led to believe he’s starting to go insane from the Power, but I’m thinking there was more to what happened that will be explained. And a nice subtle bit is that he’s said to be near Remen, meaning Perrin and the others are now pulling ahead of him on the way to Tear.
