Chapter 35: The Falcon

Everyone gets out of town fine, and are joined on the boat by the girl, and finally Perrin gets to talk to her. Her name is Zarine, though she’s taken on the Awesome McCoolName Mandarb for her time as a Hunter. So, anyone want to tell these people where the Horn is now? Eh, I didn’t think so. She’s also a Knife Nut, so it’s destiny that she and Thom will meet down the line, and she’s following the group just because they’re eclectic enough that her Genre Savvy tells her they’re going somewhere important.

By now I’ve gotten some idea of why this series gets called sexist, but so far Zarine is an argument against that. She’s an immediately engaging character in her own right apart from latching onto Perrin’s story, and if it seems pretty clear that she’s being set up as a love interest for him, at least the story isn’t jumping to that, and allowing them to develop a connection naturally.

You should probably know she's probably the most disliked character in the series. (at least the most disliked character who's not supposed to be, eg. Elaida)

Hmm... I can't even remember whether she and Thom ever meet. I... don't think so.

I like her, but I seem to be in the minority on that.

I don't mind her. It's a certain other character she interacts with regularly (later) who I don't like.

I like her a lot. And absolutely DESPISE that other character. I've never been able to figure out why Faile is so disliked. She's competent (at least for someone without any powers), she's strong-willed, doesn't take shit from Perrin, Moiraine, Rand, or anyone else. Having been raised in a very different culture than a certain other person causes friction, but that happens in real life all the time.

I don't really mind her either, at least not in the first few books she's in.

I don't necessarily like Faile, but I don't dislike her either. She annoys me with her relationship with the Other Character but other than that she's alright.
