Perrin is now in charge of watching for women who Moiraine telepathically draws to their hideout in the mountains. The latest is Leya, who’s a Tinker, so naturally we have to put up with a heavy amount of annoying preaching. At least Perrin gets in a good "The Reason You Suck" Speech. From there, the rest is just Scenery Porn of the way to the base, which is protected by a narrow valley 300 style. Not that exciting, but maybe the reason Leya is here will change that.

Really not much to say here, as not much happens, but it is gratifying that Jordan has clearly realized the Tinkers’ Scrappy potential, and doesn’t let them just keep preaching like, say, the Others. And now that we’re fully reintroduced to the world, on with the story, I hope.

You may be noticing how much of a badass Perrin is becoming. The paths of the Power Trio (Rand, Mat, Perrin) are pretty interesting because they all become major badass abnormalsin their own way. Mat especially takes an interesting road to heroics. And, if I recall correctly, this is the book in which he is Rescued from the Scrappy Heap. So, look forward to that.

Yes, what Tropethorn said. (Except for what I mentioned about Perrin a couple of weeks ago, but that's another matter entirely)

Perrin and Mat are really the focus of this book, since Rand's gotten most of the screentime so far they need to catch up a bit and develop their own characters. Moiraine lampshades it a bit at some point.

Also, Mat is sort of the in-universe scrappy for a while (so pretty much the butt monkey) and it's pretty lame. You'll see what I mean later on during the climax where he does something amazingly considerate and dangerous and doesn't get even a meaningful "thank you" out of it. It takes SEVERAL BOOKS (so, months) before anyone finally acknowledges how much of a bro he is.

He's only the scrappy until this book, as we've gone over many times. In-universe doesn't matter.
