Free Time Interlude #1 – Seigen and Konoka’s Backstories

Welcome back, doods! ...Did I mention that I’ve also been playing Disgaea 4 recently? Because I have. Moving on, before we begin watching events, I would just like to apologize for an error I made. While I went back and corrected it, I think it’s only fair to tell everyone that the Squad 5 Emblem I received from Fujimaru boosts evasion, not HP. Everyone got that? Good!

Now, the only commenter since the last update was MFM, who suggested we investigate Seigen, Konoka, and Young Rukia. This should work rather well, considering that the three scenes combined cost 4 AP, and the Goal is 20 spaces from the start. Maybe I should have mentioned earlier that watching certain scenes would immediately unlock new ones for viewing...

A Zanpakuto’s Release (1 AP, !) – 1 AP away from Discount, 19 away from Goal

Seigen asks the twins if they have been able to release their Zanpakuto yet, which they have not. Seigen tells them that both of their weapons are in a sealed state, and once they take on the form of their owner’s power, they will become a symbol of the wielder. He adds that if the twins keep training, their swords will speak to them, revealing the Zanpakuto’s true name and breaking the seal. This process is known as ‘Shikai’, and should be their top priority. Seigen wishes them luck.

After the event, a NEW Seigen event pops up: Sibling Devotion (2 AP, !). As choosing this immediately would put us past the Discount, I instead pick the other 1 AP scene suggested by MFM.

A Delicious Encounter (1 AP, Affinity +) – 1 AP reduced from next event picked, 3 away from Exit (AVOID THESE), 4 away from Item

Fujimaru wonders how Rukia and Renji are doing, and since the kids told the twins that they lived near a river they happened to be walking past, they decide to stop by for a visit. They quickly run into Young Rukia, who asks if they are working today. Upon being told that the twins just wanted to visit, Rukia welcomes them inside the shack she and Renji lives in. Renji doesn’t recognize the twins at first, which causes Rukia to deem him a fool and remind him about the Kudos’s generosity. Renji still doesn’t get it at first, which infuriates Rukia, but the redhead eventually remembers what happened. While he’s angry at Rukia for insulting his forgetfulness, Matsuri tells the kids to stop fighting, and Fujimaru promises to give them snacks if they quit arguing.

One snack time later, Rukia and Renji are amazed at how yummy the food is. Rukia and Renji don’t know what the food’s called, but the twins tells them it’s ‘zenzai’, a sweet bean porridge, and ‘taiyaki’, a bean cake in the shape of a fish. Rukia wants a bite of Renji’s taiyaki, and shares the zenzai she received in return. Matsuri reminds the two kids to share the extra snacks with other Rukon kids, and they promise to do so. Matsuri’s affinity with Rukia and Renji is now increased, and we have a NEW event with Rukia available: A Small Gift (3 AP, Chest). For now, I decide to see the other Seigen event, since it is the temporary option.

Sibling Devotion (2 minus 1 AP, !) – 3 away from Item

Captain Suzunami seems busy, but Fujimaru comes in time to deliver some documents to Urahara for him. Seigen has some important matters to attend to now, and while Fujimaru worries that Hollows have attacked, Seigen says that the matter is more pressing than that. Cut to a few minutes later, with Seigen in the Rukon District, at the end of a line-up. Matsuri’s in the area and wonders why Seigen’s here, and is told that Konoka asked the captain to pick up some special tea that’s on sale that day.

Matsuri: “Tea?! The captain of Squad 5 is lining up for tea?!”

Seigen attempts to justify himself by telling Matsuri that it is a really rare tea, and that the shop doesn’t deliver or reserve orders. Matsuri offers to wait in line for Seigen, but she is told that Konoka would be unhappy if she did not get the tea, and that he cannot delegate this matter. Apparently, Konoka carefully selects every single part of their meals, and they cannot break tradition, for Seigen can’t bear his sister being unhappy. Matsuri remarks that Seigen’s like a different person when it comes to Konoka, and is told to hurry back to the squad station now that the shop’s doors are opening. Another NEW Seigen event appears on our list: Lightning Speed! (3 AP, !). Since the next Item space is exactly 3 spaces away, I decide to see this event immediately.

Lightning Speed! (3 AP, !) – Get 3 Steamed Buns, 4 away from Exit, 6 away from Discount, 14 away from Goal

Dinner is ready at the Suzunami estate, and the twins can help themselves. Seigen is not there at the start, but comes back from work just in time to eat. He tells the others that he has 15 minutes before he has to return, which surprises the twins. Seigen, thinking that the twins are wondering how he’d be able to return to work so fast, says that it would only take 3 minutes to get there with Flash Step. Matsuri tells him that they were wondering why Seigen’s going through so much trouble to come back and forth, and is told that Konoka’s cooking helps him when he needs strength to keep working. Fujimaru wonders how Konoka had the foresight to set a place for him now, and she tells him that Seigen’s been doing this kind of thing for a long time. Konoka can’t feel her brother’s pressure and tell exactly when Seigen will be home for a nice meal, but has a bit of a sixth sense when it comes to this kind of thing.

Everyone has a nice meal, and then Seigen’s gone in a flash, not even taking the time to drink his tea, presumably the same kind he waited in line for earlier. Konoka’s in good spirits because she is glad her brother takes time from his job to visit, even if it’s only quickly. She tells the twins that they would probably feel the same if they could not see each other for days on end, and that it is easy to take simple forms of happiness for granted. Back at the event select screen, we have another NEW Seigen scene, which I think is the last one in Chapter 3: The Suzunami Family Treasure (4 AP, !, Chest). Since there is another Discount coming up soon, I think now’s a good time to start watching those Konoka scenes.

Household Chores (2 AP) – 2 away from Exit, 4 away from Discount

Matsuri and Fujimaru decide to use some free time to help Lady Konoka and give her a break from her daily chores. However, Konoka refuses their offer, saying that all of the housework is her responsibility and no one else’s. Fujimaru’s incredulous that someone would want a monopoly on housework, but Konoka tells the twins that she’s been doing all the chores by herself for a very long time, and a sudden shock to her system might cause her to get a fever. Matsuri asks if she ever wants a break, but Konoka never has, and it’s not as though Seigen ever wants a break from his own duties. All Konoka wants is to maintain a place where they can all be happy, and this role gives her pleasure. The twins wonder how else they can express their gratitude, and Konoka tells them that all they need to do is stay happy and healthy. Outside, Matsuri wonders if living like this will make them lazy.

Fujimaru: "And nobody will want to marry you if you’re a lazy bum!"

As one might guess, that comment earns him Matsuri’s ire. We now have another NEW Konoka event, The Source of Happiness (3 AP). I no longer have any available scenes that are worth two points, so falling into the Exit pit is not a problem. Now, since it is a good idea to save your most expensive scene until the end, and our most expensive scene right now is Seigen’s, I decide to go through with the next Konoka event.

The Source of Happiness (3 AP) – 1 away from Discount, 7 away from Status Boost

Konoka offers the twins some apples, which brings back memories for Fujimaru and Matsuri, who have loved apples since they were little. Matsuri wonders if Konoka ever regrets taking them in, which causes Konoka to wonder where Matsuri got that idea. Matsuri’s worried that they are not really needed, since it’s only recently that they’ve become Soul Reapers and started earning an income. The idea that the twins have been a burden, and Matsuri’s downcast yet adorable face, causes Konoka to laugh. Konoka tells the twins that they still have a lot to learn, and that laughter is a wonderful thing. She asks what it would be like if the twins could never laugh, and Fujimaru says that he would be miserable. Konoka has experienced seemingly endless days without laughter before, since she and Seigen also lost their parents at a young age, and then Seigen became immersed in his work. After spending so much time home alone, the twins came into their lives, and the rest is history.

Konoka: “The only way you would cause me trouble or heartache...would be if you were to disappear from my life. All I ask is that you don’t.”

The twins promise that they will not. We’re then taken back to the Free Time screen, when yet another NEW Konoka event has appeared: Expressions of Love (4 AP, Chest). More often than not, when events do not pop up until other events are watched, the final scene of the set will offer a good item. Now, the Discount is one space away, and none of the three suggested characters can reach that spot. So, it looks like I will have to choose on my own...and while Kaien is cool, Urahara’s funny, and I love anyone voiced by Liam O’Brien, I never did see any of Aizen’s events in my first play through. So...

Aizen’s Work (1 AP) – 2 AP reduced from next event picked, 6 away from Item

Matsuri and Fujimaru decide to stop by the squad station even though it’s her day off. Aizen’s there and ask why they’re visiting, and Matsuri tells him that they wanted to talk to him. She wants to know what a lieutenant actually does, and Aizen tells her that they are primarily the aide of their captains, and their work depends on the person they work with. Seigen, for example, prefers doing things quickly and by himself instead of delegating major tasks, leaving Aizen with the administrative work. Accompanying the captain and fighting at his side is also a part of the job, and Fujimaru remarks that Aizen needs to be a jack-of-all-trades in his line of work. However, the captain has even more work to do than Aizen, since Seigen needs to deal with Thirteen Court Guard Squads as a whole, and will not have a spare minute if Aizen does not do his part. Matsuri apologizes for bothering him if that is the case, but Aizen tells her that lieutenants always set time aside to talk to the squad.

Outside, Fujimaru remarks that being a lieutenant is a lot of work, and Matsuri says that they will have to work hard and make themselves useful as well. We also have a NEW Aizen event: The Ideal Captain & Lieutenant (2 AP). It should be noted that, even though we just received a 2 AP discount, all events will cost a minimum of 1 AP no matter what. Taking this into account, plus the fact that we now have more than one event that costs 4 AP, I think it’s time we finished off all of Seigen’s temporary events.

The Suzunami Family Treasure (4 minus 2 AP, !, Chest) – 4 away from Status Boost, 6 away from Goal

The twins stop by the squad station to say hello to Seigen, who asks if his sister is doing well, and she is. Seigen’s grateful to the twins for letting him know of his sister’s condition more often. Matsuri wonders what the big deal is, since Konoka is in perfect health and lives in a quiet part of the Seireitei, but Seigen tells her that things have not always been as fine as they are now. Back when he was our age, he tells us that his parents fell ill and passed away while he was at the Academy, and that he and his sister faced the loss of the family’s status and income, which expands on what we recently learned from Konoka. Even Seigen’s own relatives turned their backs on them, since Seigen was weak and sickly as a child. The future looked bleak, but at that point, an aristocrat’s son proposed to his sister. The son hoped to usurp Seigen’s place as head of the family, which isn’t an uncommon practice with nobles, and knew that the siblings were not in any condition to refuse the offer.

Seigen: “My sister turned him down on the spot. I’ll never forget her words.”

Matsuri: “What did Lady Konoka say?”

Seigen: “ ‘The Suzunami name and all its property belong to their rightful heir, my brother, Seigen.’ And my heart is no exception. My sister sold off some of the family assets bit by bit in order to support us. She let the servants go and learned how to manage the housework by herself. She used to always laugh and say to me, ‘I’m not worried about anything. I only have to wait for you.’“

This news sheds new light on Konoka’s dedication to her duties, does it not? Moving on, Seigen tells the twins that his sister’s happiness means everything to him because of what she has done, and tells the twins that all of this is just between the three of them. He has also been meaning to give the twins a gift: a good luck charm he first received from his sister all those years ago, which we need more than he does now that his sister no longer has to worry about him. After receiving Konoka’s Charm, which raises maximum HP, we’re brought back to the Free Time event selection, and there are no more Seigen events to choose from. There’s not many scenes left that we can choose from before time runs out, but at least anything we don’t see from this point on can definitely be viewed in Chapter 4’s Free Time.

Now, I think I’ve done a fair bit of typing, and you’re allowed to save at any point during Free Time. So, I think I’ll just end things here for now. Since there are only 6 spaces away from our goal (or rather, 5 away from the space right before our goal, where we’ll watch our most expensive scene), I doubt anyone will want to cast a vote. But all available events will be carried into our next Free Time, and now that you all know that watching some events leads to others being unlocked, you might want to plan for the days to come. Just to recap, here are all of the events we have available to us right now:

  • Konoka: Expressions of Love (4 AP, Chest) – As our most expensive choice, I’ll save this for last.
  • Aizen: The Ideal Captain & Lieutenant (2 AP)
  • Kaien: The Pride of the Shiba Family (1 AP)
  • Urahara: Urahara’s Research (1 AP)
  • Ukitake: The Bonds Between Twins (1 AP)
  • Young Rukia: A Small Gift (3 AP, Chest)

That’s all for now, doods. Next time, we will finish watching extra scenes and proceed to Chapter 4! Thanks for your time, and have a splendid day!

Interesting that this is the last chance to view any of Seigen's events. As a result, I'm just going to assume he's a soon-to-be-sacrificed Sacrificial Lion until proven otherwise.

I never noticed so much foreshadowing in this before.
