Shots Yn the Dark, or, Chapter Two

After what is actually a pretty terrific first chapter, it's time to introduce some speaking characters.

The girl's screams at being attacked have woken the rest of the house. We are briefly introduced to two young men, Henry (aka Harry) and George. They are joined by their mother, who faints when more screams are heard.

Also present is an older gentleman, who realizes that the screams much be coming from Flora's room. It seems he's the Crazy-Prepared type, as he has two loaded pistols in his room.

Turns out the door to Flora's room is solid oak and is locked from the inside. Henry hears sounds like an animal feeding inside, but is sent to fetch a crowbar.

With this aid Henry and the older man (now revealed to be named Marchdale) are able to force the door open, ruining the lock.

Henry rushes in with a candle, but the breeze from the open window gutters the flame, making the room hard to see. Worse, something rushes him from the bed, knocking Henry down and extinguishing the light.

The rest of the household arrives, only to see a gigantic figure backlit by the distant mill fire, and with blood dabbled over its lips and jaw.

Mr. Marchdale recovers first and fires one of his pistols at the intruder, then runs to grab it. The now ruddy and vibrant face of the vampire makes him recoil.

It howls, then laughs, then runs out the window and vanishes.

Turns out there's a balcony outside, with only a short drop to the garden (what we Americans would call a yard). Mr. Marchdale follows, and spots the figure heading for the estate wall. He and the brothers take the same route.

Mother approaches Flora's bed, sees the girl covered in blood, and faints again. She's going to be doing that a lot.

The men pursue the figure, picking up a piece of cloth torn from its garment. They spot it trying to leap a twelve-foot wall...and failing. By the time they catch up, though, the vampire finally catches the top of the wall and is able to get up.

Mr. Marchdale gives Henry the remaining pistol, and the young man shoots the vampire. It screams in pain and falls on the outside of the wall. Clearly, not Immune to Bullets.

Clearly, Mr. Marchdale is the hero of this part of the story.
