Chapter 42: Lots of Arguing Followed by Backstory

A heavenly glow emanated from the BellaDonna, as though she was not a human but a goddess. Her hair was wild and black and fell past her waist. Her skin was olive, her cheekbones high, her lips defined.

Her sentences run-ons.

And her eyes ... the darkest coal-black irises Tookie had ever seen. The expression on her face was one of utter poise but also extreme annoyance.

She was beyond striking. Possessing a divine, otherworldly type of beauty.

Shiraz dropped to her knees, and the rest of the girls followed.

Why would they bow? The BellaDonna has shown nothing but disdain towards them, tortured Ci~L for daring to do anything she didn't approve of, and physically assaulted Shiraz for seeing what she looked like. I can understand them bowing if they were threatened into it, but doing it of their own free will seems odd.

The BellaDonna's dress shapeshifts into a gown with sharp spikes around the collar. Ci~L calls her a fashion dictator, and says that whatever she shifts her clothes into becomes the newest fashion trend. So Evil Empress gear is going to become all the rage soon.

The BellaDonna squints at Creamy and then scowls at her.

"This is not happening. This creature has not invaded my chambers on such an important day."

Creamy bristled. "I'm not afraid of you, Rock-Wench."

"You know," Ci~L murmured to Tookie, "I kinda like that mother of yours. She speaks my language."

Tookie tells Creamy that it would probably be better to go, and the BellaDonna is amused by the fact that she makes her children call her "Creamy," suggesting that she should have gone with Clumpy or Craggy instead.

Creamy tells the group that the BellaDonna traded away her soul. The BellaDonna tells her to be quiet, saying she has more important things to do.

"Making the grand decisions that keep the world as we know it running smoothly!"

Fashion decisions make the world run smoothly? Excuse me while I laugh.

The BellaDonna summons a picture of the 7Seven Stadium. The Bored are alarmed by the BellaDonna not being there yet. We get some description of the various spectators, including the drug-dealing Intoxibella Fiona, and the Bellas, including Zarpessa, Chaste and Kamalini.

They realize that the stadium is just a hologram, and that no one can see them. The Unicas use this as an opportunity to show what wonderful people they are.

[Piper] stuck out her forefinger and thumb and mimicked crushing Chaste's and Zarpessa's heads. And in an uncharacteristic way, she said, "Take that, bitches! Who's translucent now?"

Dylan sidled up next to Piper, lifted her train, and pulled aside her leotard, baring her butt. She wiggled it at the girls. "This is for you, ladies! Some Bou-Big-Tique booty!"

Charming.

Persimmon tells them to knock it off.

Creamy says that the BellaDonna knows that Myrracle belongs there and not Tookie. She says she knows why the BellaDonna chose Tookie: because she's still bitter and holding a grudge.

"You're right! My heart has never healed and never will," she said cryptically. "But revenge is so sweet. My bringing Tookie here instead of Myrracle made you catch the Pilgrim Plague—and that tastes so good to me. But yuck, you survived the journey."

So Tookie was chosen because the BellaDonna was hoping that Creamy would die crossing the Diabolical Divide on behalf of an unknown grudge. Given that she mentions her "heart never healing", I'm betting the grudge involves a guy (possibly Mr. De La Crème). But how did the BellaDonna know that Tookie was the Unfavorite? Was she spying on them?

Myrracle is tapping her toes and bobbing her head to the beat of the stadium's music. Creamy slaps her across the face for this and yells at her. Myrracle says it looks funner in the stadium than with Creamy.

"I trekked up this damn mountain and almost died for you! Do you even know what that was like?"

Myrracle stared, slack-jawed, at her mother. "Of course I know what it was like, Creamy," she said in a voice that sounded lucid—almost intelligent. "I was there." And then, before anyone could stop her, she ran out of the room.

Go Myrracle!

Creamy gets annoyed, but tells the BellaDonna that Myrracle will be with Bellas like she should be. She then demands that it be made official or she'll tell the group what the BellaDonna is hiding.

We get some more arguing, with the BellaDonna and Creamy playing tug-of-war with Tookie's arms.

Tookie's shock over finding out that the BellaDonna and Creamy knew one another was replaced with rage. Whatever had happened between them, she wanted to know about it. She deserved to know. It was time for the truth.

Tookie starts moving as the two tug on her, directing their little tug-of-war towards the OoAh. They comically manage to go halfway down the hallway before Tookie breaks free and runs towards the room with the Flashback Females. Everyone follows her, and Tookie asks the Females to show her what happened. They point out that only someone who was part of a flashback can choose to show it to others.

Creamy tells them to show her memory. The BellaDonna tries to stop it, even ordering the girls to follow her out. The girls instantly obey ("they knew they couldn't disobey the BellaDonna"). Shiraz, Piper, and Dylan make it out, but Tookie trips before reaching the door.

Creamy enters the circle in the room, which causes the door to slam shut. This traps Ci~L, Tookie, Creamy and the BellaDonna inside.

Remember earlier how everyone had to view flashbacks before they were allowed to leave? This is now a plot point, since they are now forced to watch a flashback explaining Creamy and the BellaDonna's pasts.

They see Modelland in the past. They know it's the past because the uniforms are slightly different (skirts instead of pants), and a few of the buildings are different (the War of Words building is on stilts instead of hovering).

They see two Bellas exit the War of Words class. One of the girls is hoping that she got her point across without hurting anyone's feelings.

"You always manage to win War of Words but never lose friends. That's a gift, Ladonna," the blonde said brightly, reaching over and giving the brunette a friendly hug.

Do people routinely quit being friends just because they are assigned opposing arguments in a debate class?

Ladonna is the BellaDonna. The blonde is said to be a future Triple7 since she has all the seven magical abilities. Ladonna gushes about how the Go-See-Go is coming up, and the blonde girl teases her about it.

"That's just because you're jonesin' for that hunka man of yours."

The three girls in the flashback pass a statue of the previous BellaDonna, who is the current BellaDonna's mother.

A third girl joins Ladonna and the blonde girl. This girl is brunette with tan skin and "tiger-striped eyes." She's wearing a dress that she just got fitted for. Her name is revealed to be Latta, and the blonde's name is revealed to be Percy.

In case you haven't figured it out, Percy is Persimmon.

Then Tookie recognizes the dress that Latta is wearing as the same one that Creamy chose for Myrracle to wear on T-DOD. We end the chapter with Tookie realizing that Latta is Creamy.

So Creamy's real name is a pun on latte?

We now know that Creamy, the BellaDonna and Percy were all at Modelland together and used to be friends. I guess we'll find out the rest of the backstory next chapter.

Myrracle clearly has a decent head on her shoulders, no matter what anyone thinks. She should be seriously slapping people across the face for their idiocy now.

I just love that the narration feels the need to tell us that Piper is speaking uncharacteristically, as if Tyra truly has so little faith in her own characterization skills.

I'm actually really proud of Myrracle for standing up for herself. She DID cross the divide and she deserves respect not only from her mother but from everyone there. Meanwhile, Tookie still accomplishes nothing and only gets to see the flashback because she's clumsy. Pumaman was a more proactive hero than her.

I'm willing to believe the =Bella Donna= has "overwhelming charisma" that works on the kids, but not so much people who actually know her.

now for my mandatory comment:

Why must Myracle be the only character that's not ruined. and yes I read the ending. Also, I know want to shoot the main characters and send them to hell, the deepest darkest pits of the inferno.

Now that I think about it, if I were to go to hell, I bet it would be similar to modelland. You know your location is hellish when it beats mordor in the never want to visit category and could be a punishment in hell.

Is this the first time we've actually gotten a description of the Bella Donna? I've been imagining here as a slightly overweight old lady this whole time, but I guess that doesn't really make sense in Tyra's world. After all, no one can be attractive in modelland without looking like Tyra herself.

Random note - during that awful chapter about all the girls getting their periods magically, Tookie saw some graffiti on the wall. "Latta Defacake. 7/7 4 Sure." It was Creamy, and although it was way too obscure to count as foreshadowing, bravo to Tyra for attempting to make some form of connection.
