Part 20 - Gotta catch 'em all!

Before venturing to the Sevii Islands, there's one more touhou to catch in mainland Kanto. One that we could have caught earlier, but I'm just going after now.

That touhou would be Shingyoku.

I actually found that runner surprisingly easy. Route 11 was the first place I checked. And then I just chucked a Master Orb at it. Touhou get!

Shingyoku is an interesting touhou, filling in both the roles of Deoxys (can change forms) and the legendary beasts (appears roaming post Elite Four, form depends on your starter) The Shingyoku I caught was in its Orb form, which is the most balanced of its three forms. In Orb form, Shingyoku has 110 base hp and speed and base 115 attack, defense, special attack, and special defense.

In Warrior form, in which the blue robed male character is in the center, Shingyoku has base 120 speed, 135 attack and special attack, 95 defense and special defense, and 100 hp. He's the offensive form.

In Priestess form, in which the red robed female character is in the center, Shingyoku has base 120 hp, 100 speed, 95 attack and special attack, and 135 defense and special defense. She's the defensive form.

In all its forms, Shingyoku is ???-type, has Pressure for an ability, and has a pretty lackluster movepool. Being ???-type means Shingyoku has NO STAB attacks to take advantage of its offensive stats in either Orb or Warrior forms, meaning it either needs to hit for super effective damage or is just going to be doing fairly lackluster damage for an attacker. Given that it's movepool is, as mentioned, fairly lackluster as well, it just ends up kinda sucking period on the offense.

On the defense, Shingyoku is much better off. Especially in Priestess form. And especially in this hack, where the ??? type actually has weaknesses and resistances. It's resistant to Psychic, Dark, Ghost, Steel, Fighting, and Dragon. And what's it weak to? Normal. Yep, Normal can actually hit something super effective now. Again, that's only in this hack. Normally the ??? type has no weaknesses OR resistances. That'd make it a decent wall as well, except having resistances is generally better.

As an offensive type, ??? will always fail unless someone makes a ???-type signature attack for Shingyoku. Or at least gives it Thunderbolt and/or Ice Beam. You know you're in rough shape when Psychic is your best attack and you're not a Psychic-type.

That's enough about Shingyoku now. It has a chibi form as well, but I'll get into that later.

For now, we head over to One Island to do the last thing we have left to do here. Catch Yugenmagan.

Well that was easy. Also, we do have to go through a different part of Mt. Ember to get here... but there's nothing but CSuikas, CMeilings, and Meilings there.

Anyway, Yugenmagan is pretty frail on the physical side. Base 110 hp doesn't help make up for a meager base 45 defense. It does go nicely with the base 100 special defense though. Speed is also pretty meager at base 65. Attack is pretty good at a base 110, but being Dark/Electric type it can't make very good use of it. Fortunately for Yugenmagan, it also has a whopping base 170 special attack! If the AI didn't suck it'd be even scarier. With that much special attack, Yugenmagan would be shipped off to ubers (read: banned tier) pretty quickly. It would be a very, very hard touhou to safely switch into. Even something like Yuugi - a Ground/Fighting type - isn't safe as it learns the psychic-type attack Five Elements.

Of course, on that same token, Yugenmagan doesn't want to be switching into any physical attackers.

Yugenmagan also has a chibi form, which will also be covered later.

Next, we head to Two Island again just to check out that shop's inventory. It's changed. Timer Balls. Nice. Too bad I don't have any use for them now.

Nothing on islands Three or Four to grab, they've already been covered in full. Next stop: Five Island.

Surfing from the Five Island Meadow, where Team Rocket's base is, we come upon the Memorial Pillar. Poor Suika. Checking out the pillar itself, we find he left an offering here.

There's also some grass with it's own wild encounter table. An encounter table full of chibis. Mystia, Momiji, Hatate, Lunachild, Chen, Mima, and Dark Momiji all appear here in chibi form. Nothing of interest, though, so we're moving on.

Back at the main area of Five Island, we can surf a different direction and come upon the Water Labyrinth. There's no new encounters here, but there are a few things of interest.

Namely, there's an old man that will give us an egg... if we have space in our party. One quick Fly back to the pokemon center and a Surf back, we have our egg. Will hatch this later. There's more exploring to do.

Surfing North through the Water Labyrinth will bring us to Resort Gorgeous where... there's absolutely nothing noteworthy. Except this gap at the very end of the path, which is almost completely unnoticeable. We can go through here to find Lost Cave. There's a new catch here.

Lost Cave Touhous: CYuyuko, CKoakuma, Yuyuko, Koakuma, CShikieiki (Steel/Psychic). Level range is 22 to 52.

You know, having the ability Sturdy as one of her options (Pressure is the other) makes Shikieiki ironically the only one who is immune to OHKO attacks. Ironically because she's also the only non-legendary that gets one in the form of Judgement, which you may recall Sariel used against me.

Statwise, Shikieiki is a sturdy special attacker. Base 75 hp, 90 defense, 100 special defense, and 120 special attack. Attack is base 75, which isn't that great, and speed is base 80. She doesn't get much of a movepool to make use of that special attack, though, being relegated to Psychic-type attacks. She does get Mirror Coat, which makes me think she might have been better off switching her special attack and special defense. Or maybe just put some of that into hp.

Lost Cave itself is one of those mazes where any direction that isn't the right direction just takes you back to the start. The correct directions, from the start, are Right, Up, Down, Down, Down, Right, Left, Down, Right, Up. Figuring that out is just plain annoying, I might add. And why are in Lost Cave, aside from the new touhou? Why, because some rich socialite got lost here.

Said rich lady attacks us when we find her. We then get free teleportation back to her place. And for rescuing her, we get a reward, right? Right?

...Wrong. Doesn't thank us, and in fact she then asks us to do stuff for her instead. In other words, a fetch quest whose only reward is more fetch quests. Selphy, dear? BURN. IN. HELL.

Ugh. We're done of Five Island at least. Now to revisit Six Island...

When we came here before, we went south on the Water Path to get to Ruin Valley where we found the Sapphire. This time, we go north. There, we find Pattern Bush. It's a big, open area with lots of grass and lots of trainers. And while there's no new touhous here, there are some interesting evolutions.

Pattern Bush Touhous: CYamame, CWriggle, Kodaichan (Electric), Zombie F (Ghost). Level range is 6 to 30.

That's an... interesting touhoudex entry for the zombie fairy.

Kodaichan and Zombie F are two new alternate evolutions for the Fairy in this hack, evolving with the Thunder Stone and Fire Stone respectively. Kodaichan is a speedy special attacker with 100 base speed and 130 base special attack. Special defense isn't too shabby at a base 90, but defense is base 45 and hp is base 70. She could take a hit from the special side, but should just try to avoid taking hits period. Attack is base 65, but she doesn't care. Ability is Vital Spirit. Kodaichan, if I haven't mentioned this before, was a midboss fairy that showed up in the PC-98 games.

Zombie F has base 100 hp, defense, and special defense, and base 70 attack and special attack. Speed is base 60, ability is Flame Body. Defensive ghost-type touhou, basically. Not bad, but there's a LOT of those already. Flame Body is an interesting deviation at least. And she can learn fire-type attacks.

I probably would have used Kodaichan myself if I didn't already have Athena and Misty.

Continuing on from there, we have Green Path. It's not very green. More blue, really, considering it's actually another water path. What's here? An island with a psychic trainer who apparently tried teleporting but ended up in the wrong place. Leave the teleporting to the pokemon, kids. Or the touhous in this case.

North from there, a path I find is easily missed, we come across Outcast Island. There's nothing outside, but inside we find Altering Cave.

And inside the cave itself?

Altering Cave Touhous: CKoakuma, DCWriggle (Bug). Level range is 6 to 16.

Yep. It's the last dark touhou we're missing. Dark Wriggle. Frail as heck with 80 base hp, 60 defense, and 50 special defense. To catch her I just paralyzed her and tossed that Net Ball I had lying around. Special attack is base 60, but attack and speed are both base 125. The spitting image of a glass cannon, now in bug form!

And that's it for Six Island. All that's left now is to explore some ruins and stuff on Seven Island.

On Seven Island... we don't want to go north. Not yet anyway. Powerful opponents await in that direction. So, instead, let's cross the bridge to the south and arrive in the Canyon Entrance.

Canyon Entrance Touhous: Aya, CNazrin, Ayatori, Hatate, CLunachild, CChen, Lunachild. Level range is 10 to 50.

A bit disappointing, but there will be more than enough new touhous on this island to go around anyway. We just have to work for them a bit.

Sevault Canyon Touhous: CSuika, Ayatori, EYoumu, CHatate, Yuka, CLunachild, CYuugi, EShou (Electric/Fighting), CSasha, CYuka, Lunachild. Level range is 15 to 54.

Nothing new he-eyisthatanEShou? She needs a tohoudex entry.

Shou is Fighting/Electric in this hack (usually Rock/Electric). Her defenses... don't completely suck I guess. But at the same time, she is kinda frail for someone who only has base 75 speed. Hp is base 75, defense is 80, special defense is 80. Special attack is base 100, attack is base 110. She hits hard from both sides, but may have some trouble getting off an attack. Ability is Firm Hold, which prevents her item from being taken.

Continuing through Sevault Canyon we eventually find Tanoby Key. A small cave with a strength puzzle. Probably one of the harder ones you'll find since it's easy to get confused on certain boulders. But if you take your time and think it through, it's still pretty easy.

This is a thing we need to do here to catch our touhous. You see, if you continue south, you'll find a chain of islands. Seven in total. All look the same inside. To catch anything here, though, we need to first complete that puzzle.

On another note, my touhous were starting to weaken a bit on the way down through the canyon from fighting the trainers here. Fortunately, we can enter a house here to be restored by the healing power of disco.

Right. Anyway. Tanoby Ruins now, and the islands within.

Those islands, from West to East:

Viapois Chamber Touhous: CKana (Ghost), Dolls, CKotohime (Normal), CChiyuri (Water/Electric), CYumemi (Fire/Ice), CRikako (Psychic), CEllen (Psychic), EKana (Ghost). Level range is 8 to 40.

Buncha new touhous! PC-98, even!

Kana learns the technique Perish Song and has Poltergeist for an ability, which makes her immune to sound-based attacks. This gives her the benefit of being immune to Perish Song as well. Defenses are fairly decent. Base 90 hp, 95 defense, 95 special defense. Attack and special attack leave something to be desired at base 70 and 80 each. Speed is base 80.

Kotohime is kinda lacking an identity here. Normal-type with Own Tempo as an ability, blocking confusion effects. Attack, defense, and special attack are all base 85. Special defense and hp are base 90. Speed is base 70. Movepool is kinda lackluster but she gets a lot of buffs and defbuffs. Also, Baton Pass is a TM in this hack. A TM that Kotohime can learn. Might make a good support touhou.

Chiyuri has a very good base 110 special defense backed by base 95 hp. Defense is decent as well at base 85, making her decently tanky overall. Speed is base 80, special attack base 85, attack is base 65. Typing is definitely interesting, leaving her weak only to grass and ground attacks.

Didn't expect to see a chibi Yumemi here. That makes her the only EX touhou we caught in the final area of Cerulean Cave that can be caught elsewhere. Just saying.

Rikako is strangely awesome statwise. Base 120 speed and a whopping base 140 special attack. She'll hurt things with her Psychic attacks. A lot. Ability is Insomnia, preventing her from being put to sleep. Bit of a glass cannon, though, with 90 hp, 70 defense, and 75 special defense. Attack is pretty useless, too, at base 45. Which is too bad considering every non-Psychic-type attack she learns is physical. Well, if you watch out for dark-types she should be fine. Not much is withstanding a Psycho Boost from her.

Finally, Ellen, who's an oddity for a psychic-type. Base 140 hp, 50 attack, 90 defense, 95 special attack, 50 special defense, 75 speed. Pretty bulky, especially on the physical side rather than special side like most psychic touhous/pokemon. Ability is Own Tempo.

Rixy Chamber Touhous: CMima, Ghost, Rikako (Psychic), CKanako, Dolls, CYumemi, CChiyuri, CRikako, Mima (Dark/Ghost). Level range is 8 to 40.

Nothing actually new since most of these were picked up in the Viapois chamber, but there's some evos here. Mima and Rikako specifically.

On another note, it occurs to me that most of the touhous found in the ruins are, well, touhous that participated in the ruin event in Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream. Most of them, at least.

Scufib Chamber Touhous: CKirisame, CMima, Kirisame, CYumemi, CChiyuri, CRikako, CKanako, CKotohime, EKirisame. Level range is 8 to 40.

Scufib Chamber? What? Whatever, nothing new here. But you can tell from the appearance of Kirisame that we can get the fossil touhous here.

Dilford Chamber Touhous: CYumemi, CChiyuri, CMima, CEllen, Kotohime (Normal), CRikako, CKana, ERan (Psychic/Ground), Yumemi (Fire/Ice), Chiyuri (Water/Electric). Level range is 8 to 40.

More lacking in new touhous, more evolutions. ERan seems pretty random here. Especially at level 8. Also, I didn't screencap it, but in battle her sprite is kinda low on the screen for some reason. Looks fine in her tohodex portrait though.

I think we almost exhausted the new touhous here in that first chamber alone anyway, save possibly for one.

Weepth Chamber Touhous: CKotohime, CChiyuri, CMima, CKana, CRikako, Ghost, Kirisame, Hakurei (Fighting/Psychic), Dolls, EKotohime (Normal). Level range is 8 to 40.

And here she is. Hakurei. A very balanced touhou. Very, very balanced. Base 90 in every stat. Ability is Hakurei Miko. Not a bad type combination since, with those stats, she can use both effectively. And she learns Psycho Boost. Go figure. That is basically the last new touhou line we can catch in this hack, though there are still a few evolutions we can catch. And there's still one more that can be obtained via yet another egg. But more on that later.

For now, I'll cover the encounters in the final two chambers.

Liptoo Chamber Touhous: Dolls, Kirisame, CYumemi, CChiyuri, CMima, Kotohime, CKotohime, CEllen, Hourai (Normal/Psychic), Shanghai (Normal/Fire). Level range is 8 to 40.

We can catch two of the three doll evolutions here. Too bad you can't find Goliath doll in the wild anywhere. Oh well. This saves you the trouble of having to catch more dolls to fill out the tohodex.

Monean Chamber Touhous: CHakurei (Psychic/Fighting), CEllen, Hakurei, CYumemi, CChiyuri, CMima, CKotohime, CKirisame, EHakurei (Psychic/Fighting). Level range is 8 to 40.

And in this chamber we complete the Hakurei line.

So now we have caught all the touhous we can, but we're obviously missing some. Well, apparently some touhous were intentionally left out due to the creator's decision to make Touhoumon Green somewhere down the road. Touhoumon Green will have ALL touhous available and, preusmably, some of the ones unavailable in this hack would be available in the Johto region of Touhoumon Green. Doesn't seem like the best reason to leave them out to me but whatever. Touhoumon Green sounds like it'll be a pretty awesome hack anyway and nothing's stopping us from cheating to catch those touhous anyway.

Off the top of my head, the touhous we haven't been able to catch in this version:

Luize, Yuki, Hijiri, Blue UFO, Red UFO, Green UFO, ZUN (if we can count him), Gatensoku (another if), Rika, Advent Letty, Advent Mystia, and Elly.

I suppose the question at this point is... should we cheat just to show off these touhous?

Regardless, next time I'll be hatching, breeding, and evolving some touhous. Particularly some of the more interesting ones. Then it'll be time to grind up to face the final challenge. Trainer Hill.

I don't have issues with you cheating for that.
