Zeromus 2: Electic Boogaloo

So, we've unlocked the Lunar Ruins. In the Lunar Ruins, each character has a trial for them to complete. Palom and Porom share a trial, so that makes nine total.

To unlock a trial, we must defeat Zeromus with that character. You only need to send one of the twins, so we'll make our party to unlock the remaining four trials as Cid, Edward, Cecil, Porom and Yang. I shall call this party "Team Physical Attack Spam", because that's all they're going to do aside from the frequent heal.

As Palom mainly uses Black Magic, he's not very useful against Zeromus unless you want to have Flare thrown at you repeatedly. Edward, honestly, is not much better, but at least he makes destroys all of the dragons on the way to Zeromus. Rydia learns Flare as I return to Mysidia to change my party.

As our party is different, the cutscenes have also been changed slightly. We'll start just after Zemus dies.

Golbez: We did it...

Fusoya: You have much strength. It is a shame Zemus had control of your powers.

Cid: Woohoo!

Fusoya: All of you have come!

Cid: You did it! I guess you didn't need us!

Golbez: Cecil...

Cecil: ...

Edward: ...Cecil.

Zemus becomes Zeromus. Same speech as before. Same defeating everyone with no effort as before. Let's skip ahead to the Theme Music Power-Up.

Rosa: Cecil...!?

Palom: Cecil and the others are in danger!

Elder: So I see... Now is the time to pray for them! Pray for them and this planet! We must pray hard and send our prayers to Sir Cecil!

Kain: Cecil...!

Rydia: A good heart is what true strength is all about!

Edge: We all believe in you!

Cid's Crew: Please return to us safely!

Giott: Do it for this land!

Luca: We are supporting you!

Epopts: We will pray as well!

Palom: Come on!

Rosa: Cecil... You all must...!

Elder: O Sacred Moon, I call out to you! Please accept our prayers!

Same sequence before the battle plays out. Let's skip to the battle itself.

Palom: Here!

Rosa: Please, hear our prayers...!

Their prayers give you life.

Kain: It's not over yet!

Tellah: Trust your power.

Their prayers give you strength.

Rydia: Believe in yourselves!

Edge: We're all backing you!

Their prayers give you vitality.

Fusoya: You must prevail.

Golbez: Brother. Give to the Crystal the holy power within you. Zeromus! Show your true self!

Their prayers give you holy power.

Onto the battle. Being Team Physical Attack Spam, they spam Attack, except for Porom, who spams Curaja. Edward stays KO'd for most of the battle as he just can't survive Big Bang. It's a bit of a harder fight than before, and longer, although most of the difficulty for me came from a mistimed Defend from Porom early on. (As Zeromus hadn't made a move yet, I had her defend. He used Big Bang immediately afterward and got a second one off before her next turn, KOing her. Thankfully, Cecil, Cid and Yang all have the HP and defence to survive two Big Bangs. One Phoenix Down later and I was back on track)

Zeromus: We... cannot perish... as long... as evil... exists in the hearts... of the living... Graaah!

And so he disappears again.

Fusoya: Well done! You hold much more power than I had expected... The race of the Blue Planet may have already evolved past us Lunarians...

Cid: Our belief led us to victory!

Yang: However... Humans are weak...

Edward: As long as evil exists...

(Insert Fusoya's long speech about morality here)

Cid: Naw, I didn't do all that much!

Porom: Everyone's willpower saved us!

Cid: We must thank the dwarves!

Um... why? Why not everyone?

Fusoya: Well, it is time for me to return to my home. What about everyone else?

Cecil: We will return home as well.

Fusoya: I see. I'm glad you have such wonderful friends. I look forward to the day we meet again!

Golbez: May I... May I come along as well?

Fusoya: You wish to come...?

Golbez: Yes... I cannot return home after all I've done. I would very much like to meet my father's people as well.

Fusoya: Ah, yes. Lunarian blood runs in your veins... Very well, come along. But you must be ready for a long, long sleep.

Golbez: Yes, I am prepared. Thank you... You sounded very worried when I called my name, Cecil...

Cecil: ...

Golbez: ...but of course it is impossible to think that you could forgive me... Not I, who have done so much to hurt you and your people...

Fusoya: ...We must go now and sleep. We will pray for the peace of your planet. Come, let us go.

Golbez: Yes...

Edward: Cecil...

Yang: You're simply going to let him go?

Porom: Sir Cecil, he's your brother!

Golbez: ...Farewell.

Cid: Cecil!

Cecil: ... Farewell... my brother.

Golbez: Thank you... ...Brother.

That's all. The rest of the ending is the same. The game informs us that we've broken the seals on all of the remaining trials.

I'm not sure what I'll do next. I have a few options:

  • Lunar Ruins
  • Gather some rare items and summons
  • Final Fantasy IV -Interlude- (I'll probably do this last.)

I'm going to be away for nearly a week, so I've got some time to decide anyway. See you guys then.

You mean, as PALOM uses Black Magic. Porom uses White Magic (and was the one you brought with you).

Okay...just read through this entire liveblog in one sitting. For starters, you've inspired me to pick up & play the DS version of this game. This is detailed, grammatically superb, and refreshingly comical. Your Liveblogs are always a joy to read, SCM...and to think, there's still half a collection to go!

As for what to do next, you can potentially use the rare summons and items to combat the Lunar Ruins, but I don't think the stuff in the Lunar Ruins will help you get the rare items. After that, if you're taking suggestions on who to take to the Ruins on your initial run...well, you may as well get the Spoony Bard's stuff over and done with.

I'm still unsure on the rare summons, as I've already got the one that's remotely useful, but I definitely am going after some rare armour. Multiple copies if I have the patience to do it.

Speaking of the DS version, I've been thinking of doing a small update highlighting the changed bosses (well, changed beyond "use Cure type spells more" anyway) and a few other things, because the DS version is just so different compared to the other versions. Especially the difficulty.

I agree. Probably the first time I was really caught off-guard was during the Underground Waterway; since Darkness is a buff instead of a non-physical technique, I kept getting my kiester kicked until I decided to just have Cecil spend the entire boss battle feeding potions and the rare Ether to the magicians. I've gotten a lot farther since then, spending enough of my free time to reach the Tower of Zot, but there's still a phethora of difficulties I need to keep a keen eye out for.
