The Engineer's Trial

Time for the third run through the Lunar Ruins. This time my party will be Kain, Cecil, Palom and Porom, and Cid.

We encounter a new floor soon after Rosa's Trial, a Floor of Remembrance based off the Ancient Waterway. Nothing special.

I got that personality quiz floor, answered the opposites of what I'd normally say, and it said those answers I picked suited a Paladin. I'm evil... At least I got a Megalixir out of it.

Okay, well, we reach Kain's trial after a short while. Starting from this point, the game stops messing around. Pain in the arse monsters with lots of double attacks. One even gets a triple attack.

The first floor gives us, straight up, the Rainbow Robe, which I think is for Rydia.

The next floor has a town with the best shops in the game. How do buyable Megalixirs sound? Sure, they're 650000 Gil, but still, very nice. Also, the best armour (aside from Adamant) for Edge, Yang, Cid, Palom and Porom are sold here.

The next area has lots of bombs. That's all there is to it, lots of bombs visible on the map and a battle starts if you touch one.

Next is the trial floor. The music makes it obviously Cid's. Who likes Timed Missions?

The trial dumps us at one of the islands in the middle of nowhere, near Mysidia. We get on the Enterprise, parked nearby, and a man approaches us.

Can you fly this airship? I need to go to Mysidia. I'm lost and I don't know how to get home! Will you help me?

Cid: I know everything about manuvering airships! Leave it to me!

I'm starving and thirsty... Can you make it there in, say, a minute and twenty seconds?

Cid: A minute!? Well, I suppose I could...

Please, take me inside the town! There's no time for dillydallying!

Cid: All right! Time's a wastin'!

We get to Mysidia.

Airships are really fast! Thanks a lot!

Cid: ...Seemed awfully energetic for someone who was "starving"...

A White Mage runs up to us.

Can you give me a lift? I have to hurry and deliver this medicine!

Cid: Sure thing! Where are ya off to?

I have to get to Troia in under sixty seconds!

Cid: Sixty seconds!? All right! Leave it to the Cidster!

I get it done in twenty. Not too bad.

Thank you very much! I should run and deliver this! I can't keep my date waiting!

Cid: I thought we were in a rush to deliver the medicine... Yeesh.

A monk runs up to us.

There's been an accident in Fabul! Can you give me a lift?

Cid: I hope it's for something important this time...

Can you take me there in under forty seconds?

Cid: Forty seconds!? Fine! Hurry up and get in!

Fabul and Troia are nearly in a straight line. it takes ten seconds.

Thank you very much! I'm so worried about my train collection!

Cid: Then get outta here!

And an old man runs up.

Please, can you take me to Kaipo?

Cid: ...You seem to be in a hurry once again.

My daughter's wedding starts in thirty-five seconds!

Cid: What!? A wedding is one of the most important events in life! Get in!

Kaipo is guaranteed to cause headaches as it's surrounded by desert, and so you have to land north of it. I get it done in just over 15 seconds.

Thank you very much! Do you have a daughter of your own?

Cid: I do... And another young lady who's like a daughter to me. ...Enough talk! Scram already!

A little kid runs up to us.

Hey, Gramps! Will you give me a ride on the airship? I want to visit my grandmother in Agart.

Cid: Sure! Hop on!

I can get there by the count of thirty, right?

Cid: I'll try, but I can't make any promises... What the heck! I promise!

Agart is really hard to find if you're not looking for it. I get there with 8 seconds left. It helps that in this version, walking/airship speeds on the world map seem a little faster than in FFIV Advance.

Thanks, Gramps! I hope Grandma's happy to see me!

Cid: I'm not... that old...

Cecil: It looks like you had a rough time...

Cid: N-no sweat! I'm still young! I have energy! Come on, let's find an exit!

Cecil: Let's go.

We get back on the Enterprise, then lightning strikes!

Cecil: What's that!?

Are you the annoying bug that's been buzzing through my skies? I will swat you like the little insect you are!

Lunar Ramuh starts the battle with a very impressive entrance. Ramuh can hit hard, but he can't take it. The fact that some of the better Lightning elemental attacks do percentage based damage, making them weaker than Thundaga, doesn't help him. We get Summon Book LR after winning.

After Lunar Ramuh dies, he drops the Flare Sledgehammer on us. You can only get this if you beat all the Timed Missions.

Cecil: Cid! We're going down!

Next thing we know, we're collapsed outside the trial door.

Cecil: Is everyone all right?

Cid: That old fogey! I'm no insect, dagnabbit!

Cecil: We're fine... I think... We should keep going...

The Flare Sledgehammer is Cid's ultimate weapon, maxing out his attack, upping his Defence, giving him some general stat boosts and randomly casting Flare after physical attacks. It's very nice.

Next time, there's only one trial left. It must be the twin's turn.

This trial is annoying for another reason besides the timed missions: it moves one of your airships around and drops it on an isolated spot on the world map. It's pretty much impossible to get them all in one place afterwards.

To be fair, by this point, the only locations you need are Mysidia and the various Red Moon dungeons.
