* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: The first two volumes were drawn by Shane Davis, and they look beautiful. Ardian Syaf also proved himself a worthy replacement for volume 3.
* BaseBreakingCharacter
** Clark Kent. Fans are conflicted over how "human" Superman should be, how sincere the Clark Kent identity is, his place as TheAce, and of course, that he has to be dragged into saving the day instead of just being TheCape. A number were mollified by Clark's steady CharacterDevelopment.
** Jimmy Olsen. While he has a lot of fans (see EnsembleDarkhorse below), there are some (mostly Lois Lane fans) who think he's a SpotLightStealingSquad and a CreatorsPet.
* BrokenBase:
** Several issues that are particularly contentious in the fanbase are: the change in the cause for Krypton's destruction (some hate the idea of it having an intergalactic conspiracy behind it as a MythArc), the occasional speechifying by characters, and from the fact that JMS is seen as a Scrappy creator by several superfans (being the contested-author of ComicBook/SpiderMan's ComicBook/OneMoreDay, and his abandoned runs on Superman with the Grounded story-arc and on ComicBook/WonderWoman with the Odyssey story-arc.)
** For fun, go to an online forum and argue about this comic being better or worse than Film/ManOfSteel or The ComicBook/New 52 Superman.
* CompleteMonster: General Zod-El, from Volume Three, was once Krypton's greatest soldier. After a conflict with his brother Jor-El, Zod started a bloody CivilWar that killed many of his own people. Upon his loss, Zod helped Krypton's enemies destroy the world, watching billions die with the sole condition that he be the one and only survivor, even if it meant Earth being destroyed in the process. Zod later arrives to torture and murder Clark, his own nephew, threatening to murder Clark's mother for spite and being willing to kill as many humans as it takes to hurt him more.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: If the reviews are anything to go by, it's Jim Olsen.
* IronWoobie: Superman himself, considering the amount of things he has to endure in order to save the world.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Jim being willing to die for to get photos is meant shown him being brave and noble but instead it makes him look like a reckless idiot.
* Wangst: Clark in first volume is often accused of this, especially after Tyrell's invasion starts.
