* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler: Meishan's execution. Your partner has rights of life and death over you, and nobody will punish him for having you murdered. It's implied that nobody from the outside will even know what happened to Meishan...]]
* TearJerker:
** Songlian's quiet devastation when she finds out Master Chen has burned her father's flute. Made so much worse by Master's sheer obliviousness to the reasons behind it, and his attempt to console her by saying he'll just buy her several better flutes.
** Yan'er's face as she watched her lanterns burn. Her subsequent death is also heartbreaking.
** Meishan's fate.
** The lives of the wives. They live in luxury, with servants to care for their every need, but Yuru has been discarded and abandoned long ago, Zhuoyun is friendless, constantly scheming and locked in a losing battle with the streams of mistresses her husband marries, Meishan is trying to fill in an empty, boring life and misses her opera past and Songlian is traumatized by the backstabbing of the other wives, the insensitivity of her husband and the academic path she had to abandon. [[spoiler:After Meishan is killed and Songlian goes insane, Zhuoyun seems to have won... but Chen merely marries a ''fifth'' woman, indicating that she still only has so much time before she's thrown aside like Yuru.]] Then you realize that the four wives are likely four stages in the life of countless women in such society.
* TheWoobie: Yan'er. A young girl from a very modest background, she was taken advantage of by her employer and had dreams of escaping her life of servitude and becoming a mistress. Unfortunately, Master Chen had no intention of marrying her, and her bitter conflict with Songlian ends with Yan'er defiantly kneeling before the burned remains of her red lanterns. Unfortunately, this defiance causes her death, as she becomes ill afterwards and dies.
