Come beginning of Season 4, it's revealed they broke up, and that broke the base ''even further'', because even those who weren't fans of the pairing felt the whole ordeal was a pointless development if there was no intention to keep them together.

Most notably, how Diggie treated Maddie in "Flugelball-a-Rooney" becomes a ''lot'' harder to watch when after her breakup, Dove claimed Ryan was terrible to her.

It's almost as if the writers can't make up their minds about them.
