* AccidentalAesop: While the movie's primary moral is more about how time can destroy all things and how seeking revenge does not help matters, one can inadvertently also draw a conclusion about how dangerous drug and alcohol use can be on a person. Marcus' whole idea to go after Le Tenia is motivated while he is still intoxicated from the cocaine and alcohol he used at the party. Considering how things only get worse from there, it is easy to read this almost as an example of how reckless a person can be after using drugs and alcohol and the horrible consequences that can also come with it. For that matter it can be read as how you should never make any drastic decisions while intoxicated as it may not be a good idea and nor something that you would ever do while sober.
* {{Anvilicious}}: "''Le temps détruit tout''" ("Time destroys everything") -- or rather, for the Straight Cut, "''Le temps révèle tout''" ("Time reveals all things").
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: While being a rather disturbing film, it still does have some good tracks composed by [[Music/DaftPunk Thomas Bangalter]]:
** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhXrjQyT6ho Night Beats]]" (including its full version, "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAvAv6ohMAQ Paris By Night]]") is a pretty bad-ass electronic track which would fit very well for ''VideoGame/HotlineMiami''.
** Albeit being notorious for its [[NauseaFuel nausea-inducing frequency]] and [[FridgeHorror its meaningful title]], the ''panic-fueled'' "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lMArVYkqZ8 Rectum]]" may count as this for its [[DroneOfDread siren-like drone noise]] and raging drums being played through the entire track. (See NauseaFuel)
** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRjk-HlBWKk Outrun]]" and "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RepaShlacfI Extra Dry]]" deserve a special mention. [[SongAssociation Bonus points for being featured in]] ''[[VideoGame/MidnightClub Midnight Club 2]]''.
* CommonKnowledge: It has been said that the distant bystander who happens upon Alex being raped in the underpass and walks away without helping was an assistant on the film who didn't realize they were shooting and walked into the scene by accident, with Noé leaving them in to show that not everyone prevents crimes. However, the bystander's inclusion was reportedly intended from the beginning and even edited further in post, as Noé wasn’t happy with their look in the take of the rape scene used and had to add in a new cut of them.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Something revealed towards the very end -- [[spoiler:Alex was pregnant]] -- makes the events shown at the beginning of the film seem even worse.
** After the rape, the movie becomes increasingly lighter and happier, which makes the contrast with the disturbing start of the movie even nastier. In particular, the main characters have a slightly kinky post-coital scene near the end of the movie that's completely cringe-inducing knowing how their day ends.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** The suspected rapist proving that he is the real thing and attempting to rape Marcus after their initial scuffle.
** Le Tenia when he rapes and beats Alex.
* NauseaFuel: This film makes few allowances for those that suffer from motion sickness. The vertiginous camerawork and garish red lighting combined with the intense droning soundtrack (with "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lMArVYkqZ8 Rectum]]" being mostly notable) caused a few people to vomit at the premiere. Low-frequency sound was also used in order to disorientate the audience.
* SignatureScene: Chances are you only know about this movie because you either heard or read about the ''immensely'' disturbing rape scene, the fire extinguisher scene, or both.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: It's not uncommon for people to have this reaction to the film, stating that it was deliberately written to be as upsetting and graphic as possible and using a real-life issue like rape for sensationalistic effect.
