2	* AudienceAlienatingEnding: The original manga ends with Hatsumi getting back together with Ryoki, and this being treated as a happy romantic ending. The problem is that Ryoki is such an extreme example of a FetishizedAbuser who at one point outright [[spoiler:tried to have her ''violently gang-raped'']] that many fans ended up despising him. Meanwhile, the equally screwed-up Azuza completely regresses on his CharacterDevelopment, while Shinogu, Hatsumi's genuinely nice adoptive brother who is [[FanPreferredCouple considered the best love interest of the three]], is left behind to become a monk. The resulting backlash was such that the official ''S'' novel has [[spoiler:Hatsumi change her mind and get together with Shinogu after all]].

4	* BaseBreakingCharacter: Ryoki. Some fans love him and find him a great love interest for Hatsumi, and are happy with the original ending where [[spoiler:she gets back together with him]]. Others consider him an extreme FetishizedAbuser and flat-out despise him for it, [[AudienceAlienatingEnding hate the original ending]], and prefer the novel ending where [[spoiler:Hatsumi gets together with Shinogu instead]].
5	* DieForOurShip: In contrast with the below trope, not a few people would love Ryoki to drop dead... Though it's not always because they want him to [[DieForOurShip die for their ship.]] Sometimes, they really just want him to drop dead ''because he's an asshole''. Even people who don't ship Hatsumi with ''any'' of the characters still think that she could find someone better than [[{{Yandere}} Ryoki]]. [[WhyWouldAnyoneTakeHimBack Who can blame them?]]
6	* DracoInLeatherPants: A lot of fangirls are willing to overlook Ryoki's near-sociopathic behavior because of his good looks. Azusa, as well - no matter what "DarkAndTroubledPast" he had, it's disturbing to [[spoiler: justify his manipulation and attempt at having Hatsumi violently gang raped]].
7	* EsotericHappyEnding: So Hatsumi [[spoiler:decides to stay with Ryoki in spite of his verbal and emotional abuse of her because she thinks that marriage will make him nicer to her?]] Azusa [[spoiler:goes back to being a vengeful bastard after learning that Ryoki's father was responsible for his mother's woes?]] Shinogu [[spoiler:abruptly decides to go off and become a monk after realizing that he'll never get Hatsumi?]] And we're supposed to believe that all ''this'' makes for a happy ending? The real happy ending, however, happens in AuthorsSavingThrow.
8	* FanPreferredCouple: Some fans prefer Hatsumi to have ended up with [[spoiler:Shinogu]], who was sensitive and gentle and wanted the best for her, instead of the possessive and often abusive [[spoiler:Ryoki]]. And in the novel, they do.
9	* NightmareFuel: The story is so fucked up you'll have a hard time forgetting it.
10	* TooBleakStoppedCaring: One of the few shoujo manga that fits this trope. Every character is a [[JerkAss jerk]] or an idiot, and nobody receives any major character development (in fact the opposite seems to happen). The EsotericHappyEnding doesn't help, [[spoiler:not even when the novel ended up fixing it]].
11	* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: This is a manga with lots of sexual blackmail raunchier than most MTV shows and getting a 16+ rating for the American publication (with a few additional disclaimers about underage drinking and other such material), points towards being a josei, but somehow ran in Betsucomi, a shoujo magazine originally targeted to elementary and middle school girls (though there has been a bit of an aging up of the magazine in recent years).
12	* WhyWouldAnyoneTakeHimBack: And ultimately, in the novel, [[spoiler:she doesn't]].
13	* TheWoobie: Does ''anything'' go right in Hatsumi's life?
