* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: James Bernard's richly evocative score deserves special mention, especially in the climactic chase scene.
* CompleteMonster: Dracula himself is the aristocratic, monstrous incarnation of all evil. A sadistic monster who preys on the innocent and rules the undead, Dracula debuts here, showcasing his evil by killing multiple innocent people and condemning the heroic Jonathan Harker to vampirism as a FateWorseThanDeath. Constantly returning from the dead to kill more people, Dracula even enslaves women to be his mistresses and brutally tortures one of his servants for allowing victims to escape. Manipulating others into killing their loved ones for his amusement, Dracula [[Film/DraculaAD1972 later resurfaces in modern times]], set against his nemesis van Helsing's IdenticalGrandson Lawrence. Dracula [[Film/TheSatanicRitesOfDracula has a new strain]] of the bubonic plague developed, testing it out on people, and plans to spread it through the world at large to painfully exterminate all humanity. As a sadistic flourish, he plans to turn Van Helsing's granddaughter into his undead mistress while using van Helsing himself as a carrier for the plague. For all his external charm and charisma, Dracula remains the true lord of darkness, endlessly returning to sow more misery and death in his wake.
* EvilIsCool: Creator/ChristopherLee plays the eponymous Dracula. As monstrous as he is, he's classy, clever, and creepily cool.
* GeniusBonus: At the end of the film, Dracula is destroyed on an inlaid Zodiac wheel on the floor, which has several quotes in Latin and Greek. The inner circle in Greek has a quote from ''Literature/TheOdyssey'' Book 18.136–7: "τοῖος γὰρ νόος ἐστὶν ἐπιχθονίων ἀνθρώπων οἷον ἐπ᾽ ἦμαρ ἄγησι πατὴρ ἀνδρῶν τε θεῶν τε" (or "The mind of men who live on the earth is such as the day the father of gods and men [Zeus] brings upon them.") The outer wheel is written in Latin, and is a quote from Hesiod via Bartolomeo Anglico (De proprietatibus rerum, Book 8, Chapter 2): "Tellus vero primum siquidem genuit parem sibi coelum stellis ornatum, ut ipsam totam obtegat, utque esset beatis Diis sedes tuta semper." (or "And Earth first bore starry Heaven, equal to herself, to cover her on every side, and to be an ever-sure abiding-place for the blessed gods.") Dracula's ring is left on the glyph of the sign of Aquarius on the Zodiac wheel.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Van Helsing taking a moment to comfort Tania. Creator/PeterCushing, a big softy in real life, might well have enjoyed dropping Van Helsing's all-business demeanor for this:
-->'''Van Helsing:''' ''(handing his coat to Tania)'' Put this on.\
'''Tania:''' ''(sniffling and teary)'' I want to go home.\
'''Van Helsing:''' And so you shall. I'll just go and fetch Mr. Holmwood and then we can all go home together.\
'''Tania:''' Not Aunt Lucy?\
'''Van Helsing:''' No, not Aunt Lucy. Now, you sit there and be a good girl. ''(wraps Tania in the coat)'' There. You look like a teddy bear now. Will you wear this pretty thing? ''(places crucifix around Tania's neck)'' There, isn't that lovely? Now, you promise not to run away?\
'''Tania:''' ''(smiling now)'' I promise.\
'''Van Helsing:''' ''(also smiling)'' Good. If you watch over there, you'll see the sun come up. Keep warm.
* HilariousInHindsight: This won't be the last time Creator/MichaelGough appears in a movie with a [[Film/Batman1989 bat man]]. And ''Franchise/StarWars'' fans will enjoy seeing Grand Moff Tarkin square off against Count Dooku.
* HoYay: Van Helsing and Arthur.
* {{Narm}}: Lucy's ridiculous scream and expression when faced with Van Helsing's crucifix.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Having more of the vampiric Harker onscreen actually might've been pretty cool. At the very least at the start, where he could have taken over Dracula's job of terrorizing the nearby village. Think about it: Helsing arriving into the area, the townsfolk in uproar over an attack. Helsing goes to the manor to confont whom he thinks is Dracula only to find his now-vamped friend, corrupted and eager to feed on him. It would have made for a nice act 1 confrontation, extra points if he turned the barmaid he met earlier. Alas...
