* BaseBreakingCharacter: This was where Pinhead started to slip into this. While Creator/DougBradley is still widely praised in this movie, and all of the others, there's the prevailing arguments over whether or not Pinhead was used well. The supporters feel that Pinhead was the best part of this film and some even argue he's the only good part with some great lines and having Bradley act out of makeup as Captain Spencer. Others feel that there was too much Pinhead and the character just became too hammy, too jokey, and too conventionally evil.
* CompleteMonster: From the comic book adaptation, by Peter Atkins et al., Pinhead Unbound is given a different origin than that of the film, a demon that has existed well before it possessed Eliot Spencer and served as the black pope of Hell. After he and Eliot were separated, Pinhead was bound in a statue before being awakened and feeding on a woman seduced by JP Monroe. Offering Monroe a place at his right hand in rebelling against Leviathan and ruling his own Hell he'd make on Earth, Pinhead later tempts Monroe's ex-girlfriend into sacrificing him. Upon his freedom, Pinhead slaughters his way through Monroe's nightclub and turns some of his victims into his new army to cause murder and torment to those who cross them. Pinhead torments a priest for his faith, mockingly declaring himself "the way", and sets his sights on Joey Summerskill. He briefly tricks Joey with a vision of her father before stating his intent and attempt to personally torture Joey forever before he is forcibly rebonded to Spencer.
* ContestedSequel: While it’s widely agreed to be inferior to the first 2 movies, whether or not it’s still a good movie overall is up for debate.
* FranchiseOriginalSin: While most fans agree that this film is one of the better Hellraiser sequels, lot of the more base-breaking or just straight-up disliked qualities of some of the future sequels started here. While the movie does give an InUniverse reason for it, this was the first instance of Pinhead going from a LawfulEvil entity that only goes after the people who summon him to a more overtly evil "slasher", going after innocent people with aspirations of unleashing HellOnEarth. This would lead to a lot more emphasis on Pinhead in later storylines, taking away some of the deeper character-driven narrative in favor of more typical SlasherMovie nonsense that was so noticeably absent in the first two films. A lot of the more kitschy cenobite designs started here with Pinhead Unbound's NightmareRetardant "Pseudo-Cenobites" too.
* LesYay: Joey and Terri’s interaction has some lesbian undertones. While asking around for Terri, Joey describes her as "really, really pretty", and quickly invites the confused younger girl into her home and lets her spend the night. The next morning Joey finds Terri cooking breakfast for her and wearing one of her shirts, and Terri's affection for Joey is clearly a substitute for the relationships she has had with her abusive boyfriends. Her perceived betrayal by Joey and actual betrayal by her current boyfriend
* Narm: The Cenobite is somewhat similar to Deepthroat/The Female Cenobite from the previous movie, except instead of a hole in her throat, she's got a smaller one with a cigarette sticking out. It looks very distracting and silly; even when compared to the cenobite's pistons which can at least make him look a bit unsettling.
* NightmareRetardant:
** The Pseudo-Cenobites are more gimmicky and less frightening than the proper Cenobites seen before (sans the Channard one). Although within the context of the film this makes sense, since Pinhead specifically says they're "handmade" and "the shadows of (his) former troops." The reason the Pseudo-Cenobites are inferior to the real deal is that Pinhead made them himself, not the Engineer, and had to make them with what was available.
** Pinhead's :D face. Given that one can see Joey tied up in chains and gagged behind him the uncropped shot, and he's using the horrible things he wants to do to her to taunt Captain Spencer, this one is pretty subjective and can easily be NarmCharm[=/=]NightmareFuel for some.
* ReplacementScrappy: The Pseudo-Cenobites. They're pretty forgettable and gimmicky and lack the interesting designs of Pinhead's previous minions. Even though Pinhead lampshades them, most fans felt there could have been more creativity in their designs.
* TearJerker: Joey's horror as she sees the carnage Pinhead left at the Boiler Room, including her discovery of . Likewise, Joey sounds as though she's going to cry when she sees and .
* TheWoobie: Terri, who comes across as both cute and sad in her desperation for what essentially amounts to friendship and/or love.
