Context YMMV / GWAR

Go To

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Quite a bit of it. As far as their albums go, ''Scumdogs of the Universe'' is often considered their best, but ''America Must Be Destroyed'', ''Violence Has Arrived'', and ''Lust in Space'' are other contenders for their best album.
* BrokenBase: Despite Brockie's wish for the band to [[TheBandMinusTheFace continue after his death]], there are still some fans who insist that the addition of Blothar and Vulvatron is a disgrace to the name of GWAR. Although various characters have been portrayed by different people over GWAR's history (even as a joke band opening up for themselves), and not too many fans raised a huge stink when they continued after Cory Smoot died, Brockie having been [[IAmTheBand the frontman and only constant member]] until his death made this case naturally contentious, though a bit less so after the release of ''The Blood of Gods'', which showed that neither the band nor Michael Bishop had lost their touch.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: Twice is an understatement -- ''especially'' live.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Though she left the band, Slymenstra Hymen remains one of the band's most popular characters partially for being the only female member at the time and for being pretty good at fire dancing.
** Vulvatron has been positively received by fans for being similar to Slymenstra, so many were disappointed when she was kicked out as quickly as she appeared.
** Cardinal Syn remains one of the groups most popular foes, rivaling even the Destructos, this is mainly due to having a pretty cool design.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: Oderus' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwnHaslci9E numerous]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FfdFV5v2Nk appearances]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NQ_bE4xujs on Fox News']] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8uEABhErAw Red Eye]]. SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome also goes to Fox News for letting this happen.
** Oderus Urungus reads Literature/GoodnightMoon (both [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiCydY9MgdU censored]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U85CXYJg2lc uncensored]] versions).
* HarsherInHindsight:
** "El Presidente" is uncomfortably reminiscent of the January 6th Insurrection that would happen only a few years after the release of "Blood of Gods."
** At the end of ''The Animated Tales of GWAR'', Weird Al vows revenge against GWAR for stealing his face. Dave Brockie was found dead in his home from an overdose only a few months later.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Oderus Urungus bears a striking resemblance to just about any member of the [[Literature/NewJediOrder Yuuzhan Vong.]]
** The band has often been compared to ''[[Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers Power Rangers]]'' villains, even though they predate the show by several years.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Yes, the big, mean, crude space aliens actually performed clean pastiches of two of their songs [[note]] "The Private Pain of Techno Destructo" and "Gor Gor" with different lyrics, essentially. [[/note]] for [[WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor a kid's cartoon]] (albeit, one with an impressive ParentalBonus). Thanks to their generosity, children all the world over will know the joys of metal.
** Their third appearance on the Onion AV Club's already mentioned "Undercover" series, which was also their first since the passing of Dave Brockie. The song they were supposed to be covering was Music/PetShopBoys' "West End Girls", but like their ''Billy Ocean'' cover, the ending mashed it up with another song -- This time it was The Jim Carroll Band's "People Who Died," with [[http://genius.com/Gwar-people-who-died-lyrics/ new lyrics]] referencing friends of the band who they'd lost over the years, including [[Music/{{Pantera}} Dimebag Darrell,]] Creator/RobinWilliams, [[Music/TypeONegative Peter Steele,]] and even ''Cory Smoot'' [[note]] The longest lasting guitarist to play Flattus Maximus [[/note]] and ''Dave Brockie'' himself (as well as his alter-ego Oderus Urungus, because TheCharacterDiedWithHim):
---> Dave died alone in his chair in his room.
---> He had just turned 50, it was way too soon.
---> Oderus went up in flames,
---> Now all of Valhalla chants his name!
---> Brockie, I miss you more than all the others.
---> I salute you, my brother!
* JustHereForGodzilla: No really, they make music too. Their albums have sometimes jokingly been called "great souvenirs" to the live shows.
* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: Their second appearance on the Onion AV Club's cover song segment. They start with ''Billy Ocean'''s "Get Out of My Dreams (Get Into My Car)," and then smoothly segue into [[Music/TheWho Baba O'Riley]] before mashing the two up.
** Kim Dylla [[http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3195319/Former-GWAR-frontwoman-Kim-Dylla-pro-wrestler-brags-beating-male-singer-rude-women.html putting Danny Leal of "Upon a Burning Body"]] on blast for allegedly harassing female Gwar fans at a concert, and [[http://www.metalinjection.net/latest-news/drama/upon-a-burning-body-allegedly-got-his-ass-kicked-by-former-gwar-frontwoman putting him in a chokehold because of his behaviour.]]
*** [[http://lambgoat.com/news/25197/Upon-A-Burning-Body-singer-ass-kicked-by-female Other sources dispute this,]] however. Someone who claims to have witnessed the fight said Leal walked up to a group of "belligerent and clearly intoxicated" women (including Dylla) and asked where the bathrooms were. One of the women made a rude and sarcastic comment to Leal, who responded with a nasty comment of his own. He was then allegedly attacked by Dylla, who attempted to punch him and missed, and then proceeded to laugh with the women and tell Leal: "How [she and her friends] were going to fuck them over and they couldn't do anything back because they were girls."
* MorePopularSpinoff: Originally known as ''Death Piggy,'' ''GWAR'' started off as a joke opening act for themselves.
** Inverted with the ''X-Cops,'' as they only managed one album and a single before Dave Brockie ended the project.
* MoralEventHorizon: Happens ALL the time with them (sometimes even with their enemies).
* TheScrappy: Scrota Moon is almost as hated as the album he debuted on. Even members of the band call him the "stupidest GWAR character."
* SignatureSong: "Sick of You" from ''Scumdogs of the Universe''. Other contenders are "Gor-Gor", "The Road Behind", "Meat Sandwich" and "Bring Back the Bomb."
* {{Squick}}: From showering their audience in (fake) human/alien blood, semen, and various other fluids to songs like [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin "Fuckin' An Animal"]], GWAR runs the gamut of stomach-churning.
** A nice example from "Bloody Mary", the lovely phrase: "Her womb explodes in a meat maggot mesh".
