* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Does Mrs. Sanderson call Chibi-Robo "Cheebo" as an AffectionateNickname, showing that he's the only person in the household she still likes, or because she doesn't care to call him by his proper name and is only calling him what she thinks his name is?
* AntiClimaxBoss: For the massive CashGate needed to reach it, and despite [[UnexpectedGameplayChange using entirely new mechanics]], the final boss of ''Zip Lash'' is basically a pushover. He has barely any attacks and they have about a full second of telegraphing, and he often doesn't block, even when facing a charged punch to the face.
* AudienceAlienatingPremise: ''Zip Lash'' being a 2D platformer made it a complete departure from the adventure gameplay style of prior games. While it was a move done to broaden the franchise's appeal, it only served to turn off existing fans disliked the genre shift for removing the elements they enjoyed most about the series. Meanwhile, platformer fans and audiences in general were already spoiled for choice in regards to the genre, with there being multiple games in the more recognizable ''Super Mario'' and ''Kirby'' series available to play on the system; all of which were more well-received critically than ''Zip Lash'', which was deemed SoOkayItsAverage ''at best''.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The game has some pretty catchy music here and there. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I76cOsLZ9c&feature=related Free Rangers' Theme]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx-0pIVXEEo Drake Redcrest's Theme]] in particular.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** [[InUniverse In the first game]], using the Chibi-Radar in the living room will turn up a "dig spot" in the carpet. Dig and a ''little fat blue man in a purple speedo with a spark plug for a head'' will pop out, and continuing to jab him with the spoon will cause him to dance in place and grow to five times his size before awarding you Happy Points and vanishing. "Mr. Prongs" doesn't do a thing in the main plot or come up at all in between any other times you might look for him again for the points.
** Just what the hell were those little portals in the wall? You open a "Chibi-Door," and you're suddenly in a tiny room with MushroomSamba background and music.
* CultClassic: The original game, mostly: beloved by those who played it, but being a new IP released near the end of the Gamecube's life kind of killed any chance of it reaching wider audiences. Pretty much every game in the franchise was plagued with InvisibleAdvertising and/or NoExportForYou.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Space Hunter Drake Redcrest, an Expy of [[Franchise/ToyStory Buzz Lightyear]] who is as [[LargeHam hammy]] as [[VideoGame/FZero Captain Falcon]]. This may be why he was in ''Photo Finder'' [[spoiler:and ''Zip Lash''.]]
* FanNickname: The third game never got an official English title, but is commonly called ''Chibi-Robo Clean Sweep'' by fans.
* FirstInstallmentWins: No other game in the series has ever been able to replicate the same magic as the original entry, which is already pretty obscure to begin with. ''Happy Richie Ōsōji'' came the closest, but its Japan-exclusive nature means very few western players had access to it.
* FridgeBrilliance: In the original game, the four aliens whom Giga-Robo saved and befriended look very similar to Chibi- (or Giga-)Robo. [[spoiler:But at the end of the game, as they leave, each alien turns into a black squid-like creature, suggesting that this is their true form.]] The aliens chose that particular form as a tribute to the friend who saved them!
* GeniusBonus: Peggy the fashionable penguin from ''Zip Lash'' , who wear very bright, colorful outfits, says she's very popular in Harajuku, Japan.
* HoYay:
** Between ''robots,'' no less. Telly is certainly, um... ''dedicated'' to Chibi.
** Krushelmeyer, the French nutcracker from ''Zip Lash'' is pretty flamboyant. He even gets hearts in his eyes when he first meets Chibi.
* MemeticMutation:
** [[http://jasper-rolls.tumblr.com/post/131166899336 tfw you find a snack]]
** A...''very'' strange tweet made by Nintendo of America in January 2018, [[https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/951144137352396800 which was simply a picture of Chibi-Robo on fire]] and nothing else[[labelnote:*]]The picture itself originated as promo art for ''Zip Lash''.[[/labelnote]], went viral for the sheer inexplicable and random nature of it, as well as the {{troll}}ish nature. (At the time, Nintendo's fanbase was anxiously and vocally awaiting the next WebVideo/NintendoDirect.) Edits using this picture flew across the internet, often combining the burning Chibi with a picture of a Mii in a hot dog suit seen in [[https://twitter.com/NintendoNYC/status/951156733178798080 a similarly confusing tweet]] made by the Nintendo NY Store later that day, and other game developer accounts replied to the picture with one of their own characters engulfed in flames.
** ''Zip Lash'' has been the particular butt of memes starting in the late 2010s thanks in part to being a running gag in videos from WebVideo/ScottTheWoz, though those memes and references aren't exactly complimentary. ("[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFFREGXa_Gs This game blows!]]")
* NightmareFuel: Sunshine, with his constant moodswings and occasional [[NightmareFace scary face]].
** After Mrs. Sanderson [[spoiler:locks herself in her room and threatens divorce,]] if you go to Jenny's bedroom at night, she'll be staring at her toy TV, which is showing a strange symbol, while mumbling "Circle. Middle. Radar?" Considering what's happening with her parents, it's not much of a stretch to think that Jenny is going through a [[HeroicBSOD PTSD]] episode. She's so focused on the TV, ''her toys don't even bother to stay still.''
** The first time you approach the foyer at night, the loud, horn-like sound coming from the basement can be a bit startling to hear, especially if you don't expect it. It gets even worse when you discover [[spoiler:it's Giga-Robo running out of battery and he's yelling for help.]]
* OlderThanTheyThink: This isn't the first game about a robot with a plug. Back in 1992 there was a MascotWithAttitude Platformer on the Sega Genesis called ''VideoGame/{{Socket}}'' (known as Time Dominator 1st in Japan). However it didn't even have a Cult Following like Chibi-Robo and is considered SoOkayItsAverage.
* ScrappyMechanic:
** Making Nostaljunk can be this despite being the main selling point of ''Photo Finder''. The 3DS has a low resolution camera that cannot detect light very well, so in certain lit areas, you could get a picture that's too bright or too dark. This is on top of an Accuracy system which can be highly inconsistent; if the accuracy of a Nostaljunk is too low, it could be destroyed in-game, forcing you to save up happy points for more chances. Not helping matters is that later Silhouette Film will require more obtuse rarer shapes, forcing you to either draw the item or, ironically, use pictures online.
** In ''Zip Lash'', the next level you head to is determined by a spin of a roulette wheel. It becomes annoying when you have a few stages left to complete, and if you land on one you've already done, you're forced to finish it again before you get another chance at the wheel. You can manipulate the wheel so that you can go where you want to more likely, but considering that you have to complete all levels in a world regardless, there's no reason beyond FakeLongevity why a normal level select wouldn't have sufficed.
** ''Park Patrol'' is one of many early DS games that included touchscreen mechanics for little more than to show off the function, and it adds only annoyance to the gameplay. For example spraying water requires you to "pump" the water out by making a clockwise motion on the touchscreen. The better you do that in regards to speed and steadiness of the motion, the more efficient your water use is. In practice, it is difficult to even figure out what the game's preferred speed ''is'', much less make your motion match it. This then adds more busywork to go refill your water tank. It is telling that similar mechanics are nowhere to be seen in ''Clean Sweep''.
* SpiritualSuccessor: The first installment and ''Clean Sweep'' work as excellent ''Franchise/ToyStory'' games, with toys that come alive when no humans are around, and deal with surprisingly serious and mature issues.
* SoOkayItsAverage: Those who don't hate ''Zip Lash'' see it as a fine, but forgettable platformer.
* ThatOneLevel:
** Danger Sense Test from ''Photo Finder'' is one the jobs you can partake in. In it Chibi-Robo has to crush eight different boxes for three rounds with some of the boxes containing bombs with absolutely no indication which ones are safe to crush or not. It's basically a LuckBasedMission.
* ThatOneSidequest:
** The [[spoiler:Space Scrambler]] sticker is much more difficult to get than the others, even when you know what you have to do.
** The [[spoiler:Bowling]] sticker in Park Patrol is very difficult as well, [[spoiler:though that's mainly due to [[FakeDifficulty the sensitivity of the touch screen]]]].
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Among those who wanted another adventure game and/or are nostalgic for the first one, the new franchise direction has not been well received.
* UncertainAudience: It's often believed that this was part of what killed ''Zip Lash!'': fans weren't interested in a game being so radically different from its predecessors, critics thought the game looked too generic and grindy to recommend over any other 2D platformer on the system, and general audiences had no familiarity with the franchise.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: Awww! What a cute little game about cleaning up messes, making people happy, and helping people with their psychological issues, all while keeping a family from being torn apart by divorce.
