* {{Anvilicious}}: The effects of the wrong political party taking control end up turning America into a DeathWorld within a few decades, to the point where the main character is ''eaten alive by dogs''.
* HarsherInHindsight: One of the headlines on the ''Dakota Online Magazine'' feelie is ''Queen Di at 70''. Princess Diana died in a car crash in 1997. And even if she had lived, her divorce from Charles in 1992 precluded her from ever becoming ''Queen Di'' anyway.
** In this game, you have to go through Sim Mode to see how the Plan is sickening Rockvil and the entire planet in decades, up to the point where you will die and get booted out. In one episode of ''WesternAnimation/CaptainPlanetAndThePlaneteers'' ("Planeteers Under Glass"), the Planeteers and a female scientist enter a virtual world simulation in which pollution is sickening the planet in centuries, but sped up in minutes. And [[FromBadToWorse it only gets worse from there]] once one villain (Dr. Blight) traps the heroes in the sim and brings them to the point where the entire planet is doomed to self-destruction, just like Rockvil in ''AMFV''.
* HilariousInHindsight: It is stated in one of the articles in Library Mode that Muammar al-Gaddafi was killed during a nuclear accident in 1998. al-Gaddafi did not meet his demise in RealLife until 2011.
* JustHereForGodzilla: The liberal politics of the game are overshadowed by the sci-fi elements of PRISM and the simulated futures. Unless you go digging through menus, it's easy to play most of the game without knowing what the Plan for Renewed National Purpose actually involves. You can see its ''effects'', as the future gets worse and worse, but the tenets of the Plan itself require the player to do a little digging.
* NightmareFuel: The later simulations are full of it.
* ParanoiaFuel: "You have spent twenty years living a normal, unsuspecting life. You are YOU. Then suddenly, one day, the universe around you is torn away, and you learn that your whole life has been a charade, a carefully calculated scientific experiment. Perhaps, at this very moment, you are a normal human being, sitting in some comfortable armchair reading this story. But - perhaps you are not."
* TearJerker: The short story prologue describes what are probably the most painful moments in Perry Sim's/PRISM's life.
** Additionally, several events in the future simulations (especially regarding his son) are soul-crushingly depressing.
* ThatOneLevel:
** The 2071 sim is arguably this, not simply because of the depressing state of Rockvil or even the introduction of death events, but because of one random event where you get mugged and robbed of '''''everything''''', which is frustrating when you're trying to record the higher-point events that require an apartment key (9-, 7-, 5-, 2-, and 1-point); a credit card (3-point); or a ration card (10- and 2-point).
** The 2081 sim would be That One Level in any ''other'' adventure game, as every move (even waiting in place) will inevitably kill you. But by this particular era of the Plan's history, the completely unlivable situation is the ''point''.
