* AdaptationDisplacement: The movie is better known than the book, inasmuch as it's known at all, and the ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}'' episode is known better, at least today now with the years, than both of them.
* AwardSnub: Mainly remembered now as the movie that snubbed ''{{Film/Fargo}}'' for Best Picture and Director at the UsefulNotes/{{Academy Award}}s. Also, Creator/JulietteBinoche winning Best Supporting Actress over Creator/LaurenBacall (albeit more as an "overdue" win as her performance in ''Film/TheMirrorHasTwoFaces'' was considered good but hardly award-worthy) received backlash too.
* HoYay: The Patient's description of the young Bedouin boy; more subtly, his relationship with Geoffrey Clifton.
* HypeBacklash: Despite receiving much acclaim when it came out, the film is now mainly remembered by some as the movie that snubbed ''{{Film/Fargo}}'' for many awards, including Best Picture and Director. Also, the fact that it became a joke on ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}'' doesn't help matters much.
* MisaimedFandom: There are people who think the Patient's affair with Katharine was a good idea. Doesn't help that the movie focused so much on that aspect of the story. That said, [[spoiler: the husband decides on a murder-suicide after the affair is over and gets all three of them killed.]]
* NeverLiveItDown: The film is now remembered almost entirely for being mocked on ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}''. You'll have more luck finding someone who can quote "Quit telling your stupid story, about the stupid desert, and just die already!" than anything from the film itself. This actually persisted ''for years'' after the movie was mostly forgotten.
* SequelDisplacement: The book is actually a sort-of-sequel to Ondaatje's earlier ''In the Skin of a Lion'', where Caravaggio and Hana were first introduced.
