* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Even a series like this has one. Lita's interrupting the dialog to say, "It's Hamma Time!" with the group proceeding to do the classic Music/MCHammer dance for a few seconds before continuing the episode.
* CrossesTheLineTwice:
** Bulimia jokes ("Bulimia - zero the calories, twice the flavor!"). It got dropped for a few episodes.
** In the bloopers for episode 17, [=KrisRix=] has trouble reading a particularly ridiculous line. Max Skate tells her to think of the Holocaust. And it just keeps going from there...
--> Eric: Corinne's half Jewish!\
[...]\
Megami: I can't really be sad, too, because my grandparents are German.\
Kris: You're killing yourself!\
Megami: They weren't involved in that! Shut up!\
Kris: Sure...\
Christian: Hey no, guys, be quiet. My grandfather died in Auschwitz. He got drunk and fell off the guard tower.\
Kris: Are you serious?\
Christian: No!
** The rape jokes in Episode 42 were pretty dark and out-of-place, with Amy suffering a complete breakdown and Mina cheerfully advising her that "you learn to like it". Then Raye mentions her own AttemptedRape and laughs maniacally.
** All of the jokes concerning Darien and Fiore in the movie. The implication is that they entered into a sexual relationship while they were Squick only ten years old.
-->Young Darien: Take my flower, since you've already taken my cherry.
** "Unconscious girls can't say no!" *Cue comedy sound effect and cut to black*
*** And in the unoficial Sailor Moon R sequel ILoveTheDead "Dead boys can't say no!"
** Episode 46/47 is full of these, since the original episodes had babies and kindergarten kids as targets. Jokes include all babies dying from having their energy stolen, the implication a five-years old is already working as a prostitute, Raye insisting they just let the villains murder them, . And to top it all off, the SMA Says incites cannibalism against dead babies.
** Raye is darkly hilarious as it is, but she tops herself in episode 51 with the mention of baby croquet.
-->Lita: W-what the hell?!
-->Raye: Exactly! It's all the rage in Limbo. In fact, that's the best place to find them! The baptized ones are too slippery.
** In Episode 11 of the unofficial Sailor Moon R sequel Serena kills a black avocado seller after mistaking her for the MonsterOfTheWeek.
* FridgeBrilliance: Titus' dialogue mutating into indecipherable babble makes a lot of sense considering her true form doesn't have a mouth. She's not used to having all those extra parts for speech.
* FridgeLogic
-->Amy: The only thing I don't get is why Jedite didn't just really burn the city down. He would have gotten all three of us.\
Serena: 'Cause anime is stupid.
* GrowingTheBeard: To the extent that some fans would recommend that newbies start a few episodes in (like around when Amy and Raye were introduced) rather than right at the beginning of the series.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Zoicite's comment that "The Negaverse sees everything, just like the government!" has become more difficult to laugh at since the various scandals surrounding the NSA.
** In the beginning of Episode 18, Melvin mentions a 'Princess Diamond' and clarifies she's not related to Prince Diamond who will be introduced next season. Serena responds "We're never getting that far!" Cut to present day, where the SMA crew stopped making episodes in 2012 shortly before the end of the Doom Tree arc.
** Similarly, in Episode 14 of the unofficial Sailor Moon R sequel, Luna tells Serena to stop being so useless because "that's what Super S is for". Otamon said in a tweet that he'll stop doing Sailor Moon parodies and that the R season will be the last one.
** In a meta sense, trans people being a joking matter, after [=KrisRix=] came out as a trans man in 2018.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Alan and Ann might remind people of The Hessenheffers, but SMA was characterizing them that way before Series/ShakeItUp even premiered.
** The series makes a few references to the "over 9000" meme. A few years later, the licensed "more faithful than the [=DiC=] version" English dub by Viz would squeeze one in.
** In the Remix episode, the generals introduce themselves to the Sailor Scouts all at once, refuse to fight the Scouts together, and ultimately get defeated by the Scouts' teamwork. Years later, the same thing would happen in the Anime/SailorMoonCrystal adaptation of the Dark Kingdom arc.
** Chris "Kirbopher" Niosi voiced some one-off characters, and animated the ChristmasSpecial, back when he dated [=Megami33=]. Now, Viz's official Sailor Moon dubs have him voice Pegasus.
** The final episode of season 1 features a group of psycho rangers with the same voices and similar personalities to the hero.
** The original plan was to finish the Doom Tree Arc, and then maybe release vignettes from the second half of the season just to mock Prince Diamond and his lackies for being massive tools. When WebVideo/DragonBallZAbridged ended after the Cell Arc, the creators took a similar course, dubbing snippets from Anime/DragonBallSuper making fun of Beerus and Whis, as well as completely original footage taking place during the TimeSkip between Cell and Buu.
* Hollywood Fatass: Serena.
* LesYay: Rei in episode 13/14 (assuming it wasn't a cannibalism joke).
-->Serena: Who died and made you school security?\
Rei: Satan.\
Serena: But you go to a Catholic school!\
Rei: Catholic girls taste better.
** And she has a pair of lesbian henchgirls to do her bidding in episode 48 too. And a LOT of fangirls/groupies at her performance.
* MemeticMutation: ROSE!
** TEN YEARS!!!
** Smoothietastic!
* Misblamed: SMA gets a lot of flak from people unfamiliar with [=DiC's=] dub, who don't get that a lot of the series' humor is derived from it, and assume SMA is intentionally Macekre 4Kids-ing the show because they're American. Some of the reviews on this very site demonstrate this.
** Incidentally, anyone who declares Sailor Moon's original dub "American" and rants accordingly. The original dub was Canadian. With the exception of [=DiC's=] producers and Amy/Mercury's first actress (who was English), everyone involved with that dub – actors, writers, directors, editors, musicians – was Canadian. The SMA crew (who all lived in New York) were just as guilty of this mistake. Though, to be fair, [=DiC=] was an American company (even if most of their shows were recorded up north), and SM was dubbed with American syndication and children and MoralGuardians (who were far more powerful back then) in mind.
*** Canada doesn't exist though. There is only North Mexico.
* SeasonalRot: The series was supposed to end after the first season ... and according to many fans, it really shows. While there are still parts of the second season many found enjoyable, the weird gimmicks they implemented; bringing in outside Youtube voice actors, the occasionally horrible sound quality (especially of said outside talents), the live-action segments replacing the original Sailor Moon Says, and the odd international quirk shoehorned into every episode really lowered the quality. To top it off, the fact the season didn't even end but was stopped right before the finale was the final nail in the coffin, with many fans saying anyone wanting to get into the series at this point should just stop after the first season (and maybe the movie).
** The unofficial Sailor Moon R sequel was aware of this, covering the whole Rini arc while the Doom Tree arc is dropped early and Ail and Ann are PutOnABus.
* TakeThatScrappy: Rini is abused a lot in the unofficial Sailor Moon R sequel, to those that found annoying in the original series.
* TearJerker: Nephlite's death is played completely straight.
** Also Sapphire's death. So much than when Mina tries to joke about it, Lita silences her.
* TheWoobie: Once you get past the jokes made at Amy's expense, she at least deserves some sympathy.
** Lita can qualify too. While her status as transsexual in this series is usually played for laughs, the movie treats us to a flashback where some other students mock her for having once been a man, which is presented as an incredibly painful memory for her.
** At least things improve for them in the unofficial Sailor Moon R sequel, with Amy discovering her talent for gaslighting and Lita being treated by her fellow scouts as a girl.
** The Spectre Sisters, especially Catzi before she converts to Satanism and Prizma when she loses Sapphire.
