->''"Moshi Monsters, number one. Moshi Monsters, crazy fun. Moshi Monsters, whoop-de-doo. Moshi, Moshi, Moshi Monsters!"''

''Moshi Monsters'' was a virtual pet site from the UK, created on April 16th 2006, conceptualized by Michael Acton Smith aka "Mr Moshi".

One could adopt one of six types of monsters to take care of and use as an avatar, get involved in creation and the story line and play minigames. The website functioned as a first step to the internet for children in a controlled safe space to interact with others. While free to play, it had paid "membership" which granted users more features, often vital, such as access to the Super Moshi Missions (the storyline) and the Moshling Zoo, which displayed your Moshling collection.

Monsters were taken care of by simply keeping busy in the game. Logging in, buying items or food, decorating your room with the items interacting with your monster (feeding, tickling or clicking for dialog) and playing certain minigames was enough to keep them happy and healthy. Neglect them and they will let you know their displeasure with you. It did not further affect the game other than that a low happiness/health bar will make your monster unable to level up. Leveling up made you able to buy level-locked items and it was more likely to achieve [=MonStar=] status in which other players rate your room. This could lead to you appearing on the Daily Growl (the Moshi Monsters [[CurrentEventsBlog news blog]]) or the Moshi Monsters Magazine.

''Moshi Monsters'' became exceptionally successful with the introduction of Moshlings; smaller Monsters that tended to be under the care and protection of Monsters. They had a high collectibility value and completing your collection would require an immense amount of engagement. Most were obtainable by planting certain combinations of flowers in your garden or playing the storyline Missions. For others you were required to buy certain merchandise, complete a task and send in proof of it or attend real life events.

In the storyline Super Moshi Missions, your monster was one of the recruits and becomes a Super Moshi; monsters who keep Moshi World save from harm. The antagonists (more often than not) were a group of villains named C.L.O.N.C., the Criminal League Of Naughty Critters, of which founding member Dr. Strangeglove provided them with the Glumping process; a method of turning Moshlings into minions called Glumps.
During the course of their activity, C.L.O.N.C. has never been clear in their motives, aside from Dr. Strangeglove himself, who has been thrown out of the league at least once.

''Moshi Monsters'' was [[DefunctOnlineVideoGames shut down]] on December 13th, 2019, for reasons unknown but possibly due to the imminent discontinuation of UsefulNotes/AdobeFlash in 2020. However, there are fan revivals such as ''Moshi Monsters Rewritten'' (playable, but abandoned) and "Moshi Online" (which still receives updates) that don't require Flash. Mind Candy has moved the IP to ''Moshi'', a children’s mindfulness app similar to ''Calm'', with original meditations and bedtime stories featuring the Moshlings.
----
!! Moshi Monsters contained examples of...

* AccessoryWearingCartoonAnimal: Sunglasses, headwear, shoes and jewellery are common attire for the Monsters and Moshlings.
* TheAce: Pretty Kitties are all born able to ski, play lacrosse and speak multiple languages.
* AccidentalDanceCraze: Gilbert Finister once got angry due to a bad customer and his angry motions were mistaken for a dance and started a dance craze for the "[[AddedAlliterativeAppeal Finister Flap]]" at the Underground Disco.
* AccidentalGoodOutcome: In one issue of the magazine, Sprinkles makes muffins, but accidentally gets them wet being an [[AnimateInanimateObject anthropomorphic watering can]]. However, Buck loves them that way.
* AccidentalMisnaming:
** The reason for Capt. Buck's spelling of his name (Bucky) as "Buck E." came from meeting his sidekick Lefty for the first time and Lefty accidentally calling him Buck E.
** Crazy Bill calls your monster Clive.
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: Several of the characters, places and features have alliterative titles, e.g. Sludge Street.
* AliensSpeakingEnglish: The Zoshlings (Moshlings from another planet) are able to communicate with the monsters.
* AlliterativeName: Buster Bumblechops, Tamara Tesla, Giuseppe Gelato, Pirate Pong, Big Bad Bill, Agony Ant, Brutha Bubba, Baz Barnacle, Whiffy Wobbler and Buck(y) Barnacle.
* AlliterativeTitle: The title of the game: '''M'''oshi '''M'''onsters.
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: The Glumps were created to be evil, and while they do get the occasional OutOfCharacterMoment, they don't permanently reform without becoming Moshlings, and no Glump is created good.
* AmazingTechnicolourWildlife: Some of the Moshlings (like Gigi, Purdy and Mr Snoodle) look like regular animals but with the wrong colours.
* AmbiguousCriminalHistory: Jaunty Jack is said to have a price on his head.
* AmbiguousGender: Sweet Tooth. The last monster to ask was kicked into the "Moshpital". Most Moshlings have different pronouns used per source as well, therefor would also be considered ambiguous gender.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Sprockett and Hubbs, the robots. They're first introduced as working for the villains helping to build a machine that [[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals turns animals into evil minion creatures called Glumps]], and Sprockett helps to build a machine that [[LostVoicePlot steals a child's voice]]. However, after the two are fired, they help some of the good guys repair their spaceship. Their biographies suggest that they're just too stupid and fickle to decide who to work for.
* AnimalLover:
** Poppet loves Moshlings and has a whole song about her love for them.
** Buster also likes Moshlings and studies them.
** Gilbert Finnister knows almost as much about Moshlings as Buster and works in a pet supplies shop.
* AnimateInanimateObject: Moshi Monsters is the type of franchise where you can assume everything is alive. Doors, totems, statues, books, tools, instruments. Some come in the form of Moshlings, some are haunted and some are simply alive. And then there is also Strangeglove's hand that has a mind of its own.
* AnthropomorphicFood: Foodies, Munchies, Fruities and some individual Moshlings are food creatures.
* AntiTrollingFeatures: "Dumb" was one of the words blocked by the filter, ostensibly to prevent users from insulting one another.
* ArgumentOfContradictions: In the movie, Strangeglove and Poppet have an argument over whether the egg (Poppet's side) or the case (Strangeglove's side) should be handed over first, which devolves into two words and eventually one word each.
-->'''Poppet''': "Now, hand over the egg."\
'''Dr Strangeglove''': "You know the drill. First hand me the case!"\
'''Poppet''': *irritated* "The ''egg''!"\
'''Dr Strangeglove''': "The case."\
'''Poppet''': "Egg!"\
'''Dr Strangeglove''': "Case!"\
'''Poppet''': "Egg!"\
'''Dr Strangeglove''': "Case!"\
'''Poppet''': "Egg!"\
'''Dr Strangeglove''': "Case!"\
'''Poppet''': "Egg!"\
'''Fishlips''': "Hey, this is like ping-pong!"\
'''Dr Strangeglove''': "The case."
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: The "evil to-do list" reads "steal egg from Bumblechops, make shrinking potion, take over Monstro City, call mum". Another evil to-do list reads "steal Goo Goo's voice, hypnotize Moshiversity students, ruin Halloween, curl moustache."
* ArtifactDomination: The Sonic Sapphire is a gem that can hypnotise monsters.
* ArtificialInsolence:
** Sometimes, if a Moshi Monster was at low happiness, it would refuse to move when you tried to make it until you cheered it up.
** During the "Spooktacular Spectacular" mission, if you hand the tied-up Simon Growl the hot sauce, he will not take it.
--->'''Simon''': "I do love hot sauce, but not right now."
** In one mission, if you try to make your monster carry lava without a bucket, they will refuse.
--->'''Monster''': "I can't just ''carry'' lava!"
* ArtisticLicenceBiology: Chop Chop is said to be a "Cheeky Chimp" but he has a tail.
* AsleepInClass: During one of the magazines, Humphrey falls asleep in class [[{{Irony}} while writing repeatedly on the blackboard that he must not fall asleep in class.]]
* AsteroidMiners: Wally Warpspeed is a Cosmic Rox miner and mines asteroids for Cosmic Rox (rare, exploding Rox).
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever:
** Dr Strangeglove tried to invoke this by attempting to Glump the Great Moshling Egg and have it hatch a Mega-Glump which would destroy Monstro City. [[spoiler:He fails.]]
** In the place Humongous Haven, visited by Captain Buck, everybody there (including tourists) gets random size changes, which include growing into a giant.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Furi, Zommer, Fishlips and several of the playable monsters all have short attention spans.
* {{Autocannibalism}}:
** [=CocoLoco=] and other Naughty Nutters drink the Bongo Colada from their own head, which is basically their brain.
** Shambles and other Scrappy Chappies munch their ears. It doesn't hurt and the ears grow back.
** Fabio the Glump also tried to eat his teeth once, but they tasted bad.
** Octopeg chewed off all his tentacle limbs.
* BabyTalk:
** Dr Strangeglove mocks Shishi with this when she's in the machine.
--->'''Shishi''': "Help me, please!"\
'''Dr Strangeglove''': "Help? Of course, ickle Shishi, seeing as you said 'pwease'"
** He mocks Mr Snoodle with baby talk later too.
--->'''Dr Strangeglove''': "The bwave lickle snuffler lives."
** During "The Moshi Dance", Lady Goo Goo says "Coochie coo" to an Oochie Poochie.
** The description for a photo of a baby Poppet says "Look at that widdle face".
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: Nearly all CLONC members have mistreated a Moshling at least once.
* BananaPeel: One time, Roary trips on a banana peel and drops his "one-pot surprise" he made for Tyra.
* BarefootCartoonAnimal:
** Lady Meowford doesn't wear shoes and she's a FunnyAnimal cat.
** Frau Nau Brownkau doesn't wear shoes either.
** Neither do Buster Bumblechops, Lila Tweet or Elder Furi.
** The Beanstalk Giant is barefoot mostly, occasionally wearing canoes as shoes.
* BatmanGambit: [[spoiler:In "Spooktacular Spectacular", Simon Growl "kidnaps" himself, knowing the Super Moshis will save him, and then lie about the whereabouts of the Super Weapon after being saved.]]
* BenevolentMonsters: All Monsters are neutral to good.
* BerserkButton:
** All Moshlings have one or two dislikes, ranging from the normal (being 'shh'd') to the ridiculous (drawing pins).
** Commander Sassafras hates bad trombonists so much it's said to be his weakness.
* BigBad:
** The C.L.O.N.C. Leader is the head of C.L.O.N.C. and in control of hitting the doom weapons.
** Dr Strangeglove himself is the Big Bad of most schemes, also in Katsuma Unleashed and Moshi Karts.
** Frau Nau Brownkau is the Big Bad of "Sandy Drain Schenanigans".
** Sweet Tooth is the Big Bad of "Candy Catastrophe", "Moptop Mischief" and "Big Top Bally-hoo".
** Big Bad Bill is the Big Bad in Moshling Rescue. It's in the name.
* BigBadDuumvirate: The two evil clouds in "Gust Busters", Stinkerton and Whiffy Wobbler, are the two main villains of the mission.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** In "Welcome to Jollywood", [[spoiler:your monster, Dr C Fingz and Bobbi [=SingSong=] are locked in a room with a spiky ceiling lowering, when Elder Furi enters and uses his staff to levitate the ceiling.]]
** In "Cosmic Countdown", a Doom Ray is about to melt the snow on Mt. Sillimanjaro with a magnifying glass and the Zoshlings break it at the last minute [[spoiler:by singing.]]
* BigEater: I.G.G.Y., the sentient planet Space Glenn, Bjorn Squish, the Beanstalk Giant and Furi all eat a lot. Whinger Cats eat a lot too because the sole reason they get up from their naps is for food. Glumps also generally have big appetites, particularly Fabio.
* BigOMG:
** In "Close Encounters of the Zoshi Kind", the Super Moshi shouts, "OMG, it's a UFO!" when they see the Rhapsody 2.
** In "Choc-o-Dile Blues", Marcel and the Super Moshi both shout, "OMG!" when they find out that Biggie Diddles II has been hoarding chocolate eggs.
* BizarreAlienBiology:
** Elder Furi has goblins made of snot up his nose, and objects in his brain!
** Iggy can eat things bigger than him.
** Vincent Doorface's eyes are removable.
* BizarreBeverageUse:
** The mission "Kick Some Asteroid" involves soda being poured on cosmic gems to make them explode.
** The stripes on snuggly tiger cubs are said to be painted on with juice.
* BizarreTasteInFood: As most food in Moshi Monsters is bizarre, so does everyone's taste in it. While Slop is like sewer waste soup, and actually makes your Monster unhappy/unhealthy, Elder Furi said to love it. Diavlo prefers his sausages "toasted into oblivion".
* BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce: The firebug who gets caught in the spider web gets his fiery abilities back by eating hot sauce.
* BlowingARaspberry: The dough creatures in the pizza game sometimes blow raspberries.
* BlueMeansCold:
** In the movie, when Mr. Snoodle gets too cold, he turns blue.
** The Wistful Snowtots are living snowmen with blue hats and scarves.
** The Snowies and Frosties sets have blue colour schemes.
** Dainty Deer live in the snow and have blue fur.
** Abominable Snowlings live in the snow and have blue skin.
* BookWorm: Zigzagged with Owls of Wiseness, which will eat books, but a few of them like to read them too.
* BorrowedCatchphrase: Ruby Scribblez says Zack Binspin's catchphrase (it's all goo) when pretending to be his cousin.
* {{Brainwashed}}: Sometimes, the C.L.O.N.C. workers hypnotize people into working for them, like in "Candy Catastrophe" and "Super Moshiversity Challenge".
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Under the influence of the Sonic Sapphire in "Super Moshiversity Challenge", the students get hypnotised into being destructive.
* BrainyBaby: Lady Goo Goo and Baby Rox, the Glitzy Booboos. Both of them are just babies but are perfectly capable of speech.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: The Moshi Monsters Magazine has a Real Life section where Bushy Fandango explores a certain subject in the "real world". Other character comment on it.
* BubblegumPopping: Exploited in "Cosmic Countdown". Sweet Tooth blows a bubble with bubblegum and Splutnik pops it in their face, causing them to crash their flying motorcycle thing.
* BurningWithAnger: Whenever Diavlos get angry, lava shoots from their heads, however, they can also willingly spurt lava.
* CactusPerson: There's a species of talking, purple cacti called Tickly Pickles.
* CalculatorSpelling: Cosmo is a creature [[AnimateInanimateObject resembling a calculator]]. When you click on him, he types, "O.7734", then stands on his head to make it read "HELLO" and then stands back up and says, "Hello!".
* CaptainColorbeard: One of the Moshlings is called "Long Beard".
* CartoonBomb: Cherry Bomb the Baby Boomer. Also when you're making the Bongo Colada in the Food Factory, on Head Butt mode you avoid bombs, which are depicted as round with a fuse sticking out (and with faces).
* CartoonCreature: There are some monsters based off of animals, mythology and other known creatures but foremost they are just something entirely knew that can simply be described as "monster". Something like Roary Scrawl, Dewy, Tamara Tesla or Rubby Scribblez are just not any known creature.
* CatchingSomeZs: When Humphrey falls asleep in class in the magazine, "Z"s are seen above him.
* CatchPhrase: Several characters have catchphrases.
** Roary Scrawl - "Keep Your Eyes At Hand"
** Dr Strangeglove - "Today Monstro City, tomorrow the world!"
** Elder Furi - "Stay vigilant".
** Zack Binspin - "It's all goo, baby".
* CatchYourDeathOfCold: Zigzagged. Judder gets frozen in ice and afterwards, he's caught a cold.
* CatNinja: Caped Assassins resemble cats and they are sort of ninjas but aren't very good at it due to their [[PowerIncontinence inability to control]] their disappearing powers.
* CatsAreSuperior: Zigzagged. One species of cats, the Pretty Kitties, are a bit snooty, but all other cats aren't.
* CatScare: In "Monster Movie Mystery", Part One has the players think they were tracking The Beast but it turns out to be Big Bad Bill on stilts.
* CharacterTics: Some characters will do stuff idly, like Zack Binspin blowing his hair out of his eyes and Baz Barnacle spitting sand. Zommers have a twitch and are said to pick at their stitches. Crazy Bill has a similar twitchy tick.
* ChekhovsGun: The majority of items collected in missions get used later on.
* ChekhovsVolcano: Zigzagged. Mount Eggiecrest is said to have erupted custard a long time ago, causing the Great Custard Flood of 99999.5, Mount Krakka Blowa is mentioned in "Big Bad Bill is a Woolly Blue Hoodoo" but it doesn't erupt. It does, however, erupt ''candy'' in "Trapped in Gummy". Mount Char Char, Mini Mount Char Char, and ''The'' Volcano are all perpetually erupting lava...harmlessly.
* CodeName: When you're pretending to be a Glump in the missions, you can have several code names, from "Super Woshi" to "Gloopy".
* ColorCharacter: One of the Glumps is called "''Black'' Jack".
* ComedicUnderwearExposure:
** In the Shoney song, Shoney burns off Buster Bumblechops's clothes, leaving his underwear visible.
** Threadie's original animation had them upside down to have their sock slip up and reveal their underwear which makes them blush.
* ComedicWorkSeriousScene: The movie is mostly a comedy, but the scene just before "We Can Do It" is pretty bleak -- Poppet, Katsuma, and the pets are trapped in an ice cave, both of the pets are hypothermic and Poppet notes that there's danger of them "not making it", and Katsuma, who's normally very enthusiastic and cocky, is reduced to tears.
* CompressedVice: Zigzagged for Whurley the Twirly Tiddlycopter. In one magazine, he's said to be afraid of heights, but in "Strangeglove From Above", he doesn't seem to mind being up high. In one of the magazine comics, he doesn't want to do a trapeze trick but his solution was to fly even higher which means he was probably just having PerformanceAnxiety.
* TheConfidant:
** The Datekeeper is the Gatekeeper's main source of advice in regards to his problems.
** Big Chief Tiny Head used to be Bobbi Singsong's confidant, giving fake "wisdoms", but he turned out to be a fraud and his advice was bogus.
* ConMan:
** Sly Chance
** In "Welcome to Jollywood", Big Chief Tiny Head fakes being TheConfidant to Bobbi Singsong.
** The entirety of the Swindlies set.
* ContinueYourMissionDammit: While most non-timed areas didn't feature this, if you idled at home, your monster would often try to encourage you to do something. They would shout things like, "What's with the cold shoulder treatment?" or "Are you blanking me on purpose?", Poppets would pop balloons, and Katsumas would do a creepy stare.
* CoolShades: DJ Quack, Lady Goo Goo, Sly Chance and Blingo all wear sunglasses.
* CreepyGood: Everyone and Everything in Moshi Monsters, although they sometimes get confused when bad is good and bad is bad. Special mention of the Ghosts, Ghost Pirates, Spookies and Screamies.
* CruellaToAnimals: C.L.O.N.C. are often mean to Moshlings by either enslaving them or turning them into Glumps.
* CreepyGood:
* CucumberFacial: The picture for the mission "Sandy Drain Shenanigans" shows a Poppet getting a spa treatment with cucumbers on their eyes.
* CuddleBug: Fluffy Snugglers (Scarlet O'Hairia's species) will cuddle anything, from inanimate objects to strangers.
* [[CutebutCacophonic Cute, but Cacophonic]]: All the Noisies but especially Boomer.
* CymbalBangingMonkey: The Antique Isle Monkey Cymbals item depicting Chop Chop.
* DamselInDistress:
** In the ghost mission, Tamara gets locked in her own lab due to ghosts.
* DanceOff: Big Chief Tiny Head knows this is the only way Bobbi [=SingSong=] wants to "settle it" but makes his grand escape one it is his own turn.
* DancingWithMyself: The monsters often randomly dance, regardless of whether they have company.
* DangerouslyGarishEnvironment:
** Subverted for the circus known as both Cirque du Bonbon and Cirque du Moshi. It is a pretty standard circus with colourful tents, etc, but it used to be the villains' base. However, the villains moved to another base and the circus stayed.
** Zigzagged for the Candy Cane Caves. They're caves full of candy which [[MiningForCookies can be mined]] and a river full of jam, but occasionally they get taken over by the candy-themed villain Sweet Tooth. When not corrupted though, they're just as fun as they look.
* DarkIsEvil: Zigzagged. There are several "dark" villains, like Dr Strangeglove, the boss, the Hatekeeper and Frau Nau Brownkau and CLONC bases are generally eerie-looking, but there is also Sweet Tooth who is an example of LightIsNotGood and the Glumps, who are sort of comical. There are several instances of DarkIsNotEvil in the game, too.
* DarkIsNotEvil: A common theme in Moshi Monsters is that monstrous is monstrous, which means it may be good.
** Zommers look a bit zombie-like, with their sewn-on parts, missing eyes, drool, and visible ribs on one side. However, most of them are actually well-meaning.
** The "Spookies" and "Screamies" Moshlings are all pretty eerie, but actually quite friendly.
** Several friendly ghosts exist within the game, including the ghost pirates and Zoinks.
** Vincent Doorface and Scratch the spider have a creepy vibe, but they're helpful.
* DarknessVonGothickname: One of the ghost shopkeepers (not to be confused with the ghost pirates) is called Dedward.
* ADayInTheLimelight:
** In "Candy Catastrophe", Snozzle Wobbleson gets in on some action.
** In the first part of "Gust Busters", Raarghly, Dewey and Mizz Snoots play an important role in the plot.
** Bonkers plays a part in "Pop Goes the Boo Boo".
** Bubba plays a part in "Pop Goes the Boo Boo", "Moptop Mischief" and "Uptown Fifi".
* DeepSleep: In "Gust Busters", Dewey, Mizz Snoots, Raarghly and Tamara Tesla get put into sleep via evil clouds. They can't be woken with conventional means and must be woken with [[ItMakesSenseInContext flower-scented water]].
* DeliciousDistraction: In the movie, Furi gets distracted from [[{{Teleportation}} "kerfuffling"]] because he smelled some soup.
* DemBones:
** Hoolio and other Creepy Crooners.
** Woolly Blue Hoodoos have [[NothingButSkulls tons of skull ornaments]] at Hoodoo Central and on top of their mystic staffs.
** Skull Guard is a talking skull on a stick "guarding" Dr. Strangeglove's lair in the Wobbly Woods. They do a rubbish job at guarding but they cannot think straight after the Doctor hid his lair keys in the skull.
** The Room item Coral and Hardy. "Poor old Hardy. He was a jolly fellow. Still...his skull makes for one eye-poppin' plant pot!"
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment:
** In one of the magazines, Roary Scrawl is listing his favourite aspects of being behind a movie's scenes and he lists the food three times.
** In another magazine, Humphrey is WritingLines and writes his line four and a half times before falling asleep.
* DisappearedDad: Hum Plum is seen and her babies are mentioned but the father of the babies is never seen or mentioned. Biggie Diddles II, Captain Codswallop and Linton make mention of their mothers but not fathers. Lila Tweet's parents are never seen. Her mother is said to be a SupremeChef, but her father is not mentioned whatsoever.
* DisneyDeath:
** [[spoiler:In the movie, Mr Snoodle gets knocked off Strangeglove's blimp and falls through the air, but survives because he called for bunch of Tiddly copters to save him.]]
** In "Kick Some Asteroid", Rover is thought by Wally to be dead, but he isn't.
* DissonantSerenity: When Simon Growl is kidnapped, despite being about to fall down a hole, he acts more bored than scared.
* DistressedDude:
** Elder Furi was made sick in Season 1, kidnapped, went missing until the half of Season 2, and in Katsuma Unleashed! he is captured as well.
** In "Lost in Hong Bong", Captain Buck gets stuck in a bottle and shrunk and must be released.
** In "Spooktacular Spectacular", Simon Growl is kidnapped and tied up from the ceiling. [[spoiler:Subverted as it's revealed he did that himself.]]
* DittoAliens: Played straight for the Astro Gremlins who look almost identical, and inverted for the Zoshlings, who look nothing alike despite being the same species.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: All Katsumas hate gloopy jelly beans, Sweet Tooth dislikes anything savory. Purdy doesn't like salad. Shrewman doesn't like red berries. Lady Meowford doesn't like kebabs.
* ADogNamedDog: In the movie, the characters (Poppet, Katsuma, Furi, Luvli, Diavlo and Zommer) are all named after their species. Also Bug, the...bug.
* DogStereotype: Played with. Oochie Poochies, their equivalent of poodles, are fancy like stereotypical poodles but also have their mischevious side. Musky Huskies pull sleighs, but that's not all they do.
* DoomyDoomsOfDoom: There are two C.L.O.N.C. weapons called the "Doom fist" and the "Doom ray".
* DoNotCallMePaul: Dr Strangeglove's original name is Lavender Troggs, but he doesn't want to be called that anymore.
* DreamingOfAWhiteChristmas: Around Christmas time on-site, it always snows.
* DressedToPlunder: Pirates are a common subject in Moshi Monsters. With the many Pirate characters (Cloudy Cloth Clipper crew, Marooned Five and other Ghost Pirates, Commander Sassafras and Bratworst, Octopeg) and the celebration of Pirates during Pirate Day and the Pirate Takeover, Monsters can also dress themselves as pirates. There is even a special clothing shop for it; the Boot-Eek!
* DoNotCallMePaul: In "Super Weapon Showdown", Elder Furi calls Dr. Strangeglove "Lavender" even after he tells him he doesn't want to be called that.
* EarlyPersonalitySigns: When he was a baby, Zack Binspin would rub things in his hair a lot and sing into a fake microphone. Now, he's a singer and running your fingers through his hair is like a buffet.
* EdibleThemeClothing: In the song "The Moshi Dance", Lady Goo Goo wears spaghetti as a hat.
* EdibleThemeNaming: Several characters are named after food including Sprinkles, Yolka and Mr. Mushy Peas.
* TheEeyore: The species of Furis, originally. They love getting down...in the dumps.
* EggMacGuffin:
** The movie focuses on the Great Moshling Egg, an egg that is very ancient and Dr Strangeglove wants to hatch it so he can turn the Moshling into a Mega Glump. [[spoiler:Of course, he fails, and the egg hatches into a Silly Snuffler named Mrs Snoodle.]]
** In "Missing Moshling Egg", the first mission, a Moshling egg gets stolen from Buster Bumblechops's sanctuary and eventually gets saved and hatches into [[spoiler:a Glitzy Boo-Hoo, formerly Lady Goo Goo, now Baby Rox.]]
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas:
** The last on the "evil to-do list" from "Missing Moshling Egg" is "call mum".
** Biggie Diddles hates jokes about his mom and takes her linedancing.
** Captain Codswallop mentions his mum giving him a golden anchor.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep:
** The Gatekeeper is only referred to as such. Could be his real name as his cousins are the Hatekeeper, Greatkeeper, Fatekeeper, Latekeeper and Datekeeper.
** The C.L.O.N.C. Leader is a mystery in many ways.
* EvilGloating: "Missing on a Star" ends with the C.L.O.N.C. leader gloating [[spoiler:about how the Doom Ray will allegedly melt Mt Sillimanjaro and flood Monstro City.]]

The full list goes: [[BigEater IGGY]], Fifi, Stanley, Plinky, Cali, Shishi, Burnie, [[StickyFingers Tiki]], Gabby, [[ActionGirl Peppy]], Fumble, Dipsy, Hansel, Honey, Flumpy, [[{{Unicorn}} Gigi]], Wallop, [[WingedUnicorn Angel]], Wurley, Rocky, [=McNulty=], Humphrey, Oddie, Purdy, Ecto, [[ThePrankster Chop Chop]], Kissy, Shelby, Doris, Gurgle and Mr Snoodle.

** In "The Doctor Will See You Know", Fishlips explodes but is back in the next scene.
** The Jelly Cloud breaks in two but survives.
* MagicMusic:
** When combined with music, the Sonic Sapphire has magical properties.
** When the Zoshlings (alien Moshlings) sing their Cosmic Harmonies, it can break glass despite not being as loud as a sonic boom.
** One of the ways to get Splutnik out of his trance was with "an ear's delight", which is a little tune.
* MagicPotion:
** The "Make-All Smaller Potion" is made from [[NoseNuggets troll snot]], [[RoadApples bat droppings]], and berries, and shrinks things. It has a variant called the "Make-All Smallest Potion" which shrinks things to microscopic size.
** The "Glumping Potion" is made from a firebug, beanstalk sap, and other ingredients and turns Moshlings into Glumps. Without the firebug it becomes a "''De''glumping Potion" that turns Glumps into Moshlings.
** One mission features a sleeping potion that's used to put the TontoTalk-speaking Big Chief Tiny Head to sleep.
* MagicStaff: You don't just have a walking cane in Moshi Monsters, it WILL be some sort of magic stick. (In Dr. Strangeglove's case, it is more of a gadget.) Originally a trait of some magical individuals, the introduction of Super Moshlings had them ALL have a staff of power as part of their Super Getup.
** Elder Furi has a staff with a [[PowerCrystal Powerful Rox]] on top of it. The staff got seperated from its owner twice, where Super Moshi could wield it to open a path in the Volcane, and one time in the jungle, where Big Bad Bill picked it up to steer his Hoodoo Stew.
** Big Bad Bill and the Woolly Hoodoos. The more detailed the staff, the more likely belonging to a chief. Big Bad Bill just keeps it simple as a species representative.
** Wuzzle and other Wandering Wumples, although the magic comes from the charm dangling off the staff.
** Hocus and other Wonky Wizards.
** All Super Moshlings, who hold a great variety of objects in their paws but it all comes down to being Magic Staffs.
** Averted with Big Chief Tiny Head, who also has a large impressive staff, but [[ConMan it is just a stand]] to hold his drink.
* ManekiNeko: Tingaling and her species are based on the lucky cat statue.
* TheManInTheMoon: The world of Moshi has a moon with a face.
* MassHypnosis: Happens several times.
** Big Bad Bill can put fellow moshlings under a zombiefied hypnotic spell.
** In "Moptop Mischief", [[spoiler:Sweet Tooth hypnotises all the people at Zack Binspin's concert.]]
** In another mission, your monster's classmates at a boarding school are hypnotised by [[spoiler:the Headmaster, who is actually a Glump.]]
** The two Candy Cane Caves workers are hypnotised twice. The first is in "Candy Cane Catastrophe" when they're hypnotised into putting goo on the candy, and the second is in the movie when they're hypnotised into kidnapping the protagonists. They even know they're hypnotised the second time round.
* MeaningfulName: Some characters have names like this, such as Sweet Tooth who likes candy, Sprockett and Hubbs the robots and Elder Furi, who's, well, elderly and a Furi.
* MechaMooks: There are several robot characters which are considered monsters as well:
** Sprockett and Hubbs, two bumbling repair robots.
** The Techies and Techies 2.0 set with 10 seperate characters.
** Loose characters like HipHop, Liberty, Blinki and Judder are mechanical living objects as well.
** The Jokebot is a robot designed to tell jokes.
** Ri-Anne Droid.
** Robot Moshlings from Katsuma Unleashed!
* TheMedic: Dr C Fingz is a medical worker but we never see him do it.
* MedicalGame:
** The mission "20,000 Leagues Under the Fur" is about [[FantasticVoyagePlot going inside Elder Furi]] to cure him of a disease called Glumps (caused by him having [[AlwaysChaoticEvil Glumps]] in his body).
** The second part of "Moptop Mischief" is about finding Zack and curing him of his [[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals poisoning]].
* MedicinalCuisine: In the mission "Moptop Mischief", when Zack is poisoned, the antidote comes in the form of a particular kind of sushi.
* MediumAwareness: Sometimes, characters seem to be aware they're in a game, and when ''Moshi Monsters: the Movie'' came out, characters in the Daily Growl and the magazine kept talking about the presence of a movie.
* MerlinSickness: Baby Tumteedums age backwards and the "baby" ones are hundreds of years old.
* MetalScream: Sweet Tooth's song "Sweet Tooth Stomp" has a few of these.
* MetaphorIsMyMiddleName: In the movie, Katsuma says, "Versatility's my middle name" to his pet Songful Seahorse.
* MindControlDevice: The Sonic Sapphire is used to hypnotise monsters.
* MindControlEyes:
** The illustration of monsters under the influence of the Sonic Sapphire shows them with swirls in their eyes, though this is averted for actual monsters who've been "Sonic Sapphire-d".
** When the Roarkers are hypnotized (both in "Candy Cane Catastrophe" and in the movie), they have swirls in their eyes.
** When the audience is mesmerized in "Moptop Mischief", they have "spinning beach balls of death" for eyes.
* MindControlMusic: Zigzagged. Music can spread the hypnotic Sonic Sapphire's power, but it is not hypnotic itself.
* MindScrew:
** Pretty Kitties are said to be "always right--well, one time, a Pretty Kitty thought this was wrong but was right all along."
** Oddie's description reads "If you're wondering how a doughnut can turn into a live Mottling, don't. It will just make your brain ache."
** Baby Tumteedums like Snookums age in reverse. When this fact is mentioned, the narrator says "Confused? You should be."
* MiningForCookies: All candy sold at the Gross-ery Store is mined in the Candy Cane Caves, where marshmallow, toffee, liquorice, cake and all sort of other sweet treats naturally grow. Chocolate is taken to the Chocolate Refinery to create Chocolate Eggs.
* MistakenForBrooding: In "Bungle in the Jungle", there's a green Hoodoo who doesn't say a word. The player character wonders if he's having SilenceOfSadness and asks if he's alright, to which his kids respond that he's okay, he's just TheQuietOne.
* MistakenForName: Captain Buck E. Barnacle's real name is ''Bucky'' Barnacle, but Lefty initially got it wrong, and the nickname stuck.
* MisterStrangenoun: Quite a lot of characters have words in their names: Mizz Snoots, Sweet Tooth, Bushy Fandango...
* MonsterClown: Zigzagged for Sweet Tooth. They have fluffy hair, a red nose and a smile that's similar to a clown's, and are described as having a "face like a maniac clown". They also pretended to be a clown in "Big Top Ballyhoo", and of course they're evil and like to use MindManipulation, but they're not genuinely a real clown.
* MoodSwinger:
** Nimbus the cloud switches between bursting out in laughter and zapping with rage.
** The dish for the Slopcorn in the Food Factory randomly gets angry.
* MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate: Dr Strangeglove, although he's less morally ambiguous and more just plain evil.
* TheMusicMeister: Bobbi SingSong has the ability to [[InvoluntaryDance make you move like him]] but it is never shown as something people do not want to do.
* MyLittlePhony: The "My Little Mutant" toys are mutant pony toys.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: Implied for Marcel. He's an Uppity Croc Monseiur, and Moshlings of that species are renowned for being intentionally extremely rude, however, Marcel himself is never seen being rude.
* MrFixit:
** The Super Moshis are inherently this as some missions require them to succeed at fixing objects.
** Whinger Cats are said to be good at fixing objects but it's never been outright proven or disproven because they are very lazy.
*** Tabby Nerdicats on the other hand are known to be repair experts.
** Sprockett and Hubbs are very good at fixing objects.
* MrViceGuy: Several characters are flawed, but generally do the right thing.
** Sneaky Tealeafs are kleptomaniacs, but make a point of cleaning up any messes they make and bringing back what they steal.
** Pilfering Toucans and Baz Barnacle are all a bit negligent in returning things they borrow, but are always willing to help others.
** Psycho Gingerboys enjoy tripping people up and holding up bakeries, but they're not all bad.
** Uppity Croc Monseiurs are, well, uppity but they're always willing to help others.
* NameTron: The machine which turns Moshlings into Glumps is called the Glump-o-tron [[AdvancedTech2000 3,000]].
* NatureTinkling: One of the magazines implies that the Great White Furi has no toilet and just poops and pees outside.
* NerdGlasses: Ned and Waldo, both nerds, wear glasses.
* NeverSayDie: While the game averts this (with Peppy being described as liking to do "death-defying stunts"), as does the magazine (one issue uses the term "executed"), the movie plays it straight. When the two {{Team Pet}}s are in danger of dying from hypothermia, Poppet expresses fear about them "not making it". Then, when one of them, Mr. Snoodle, falls to his apparent death, she sings sadly that he's "gone", Luvli says, "Maybe he's in a better place", and later, Poppet seems like she's going to say the D-word but backs out of it when she says, "Mr. Snoodle is ... is gone!".
* NiceGuy:
** Elder Furi is friendly and nice. Fits, too considering he's the leader of the Super Moshis.
** Furi and Zommer in the movie. They don't talk very much, but they never say or do anything rude.
** Poppet in the movie is a Nice Girl. She's a FriendToAllLivingThings, cares about other monsters, and doesn't like arrogance.
*** The Gatekeeper's cousin the Datekeeper is also a Nice Girl.
----> '''Datekeeper''': "He (Gatekeeper) talks to me about all his problems."
** Fuddy the Moshling. One of his favourite things to do is help others.
** Cosmo the calculator Moshling, judging by the way he says "Hello" every time you click him.
** The Gatekeeper is actually quite a nice guy despite his intimidating exterior.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The three judges at the Underground Disco: Tyra Fangs is nice, Simon Growl is mean and Roary Scrawl is in between.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: In one of the Season Two missions, there were Mutant Glump Sharks.
* NoBodyLeftBehind: [[spoiler:When the Mighty Gustavo is defeated, he evaporates.]]

* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Several characters are named after celebrities: Lady Goo-Goo, Dustbin Beaver, Taylor Miffed, Banana Montana, Broccoli Spears...
* NoIndoorVoice:
** The Chick Checker is very noisy, which used to keep monsters awake but doesn't on Gift Island, where everything is noisy anyway.
** Commander Sassafras shouts a lot.
* NoNameGiven:
** We never find out the names of the two miners, aka "Roarkers", in the Candy Cane Caves.
** We never find out the shopkeeper's name who speaks gibberish in the movie. Nor do we find out the names of the random Moshlings seen occasionally, including Bobbi Singsong's fans, the Moshlings seen in the street and in the CLONC lab, Katsuma's pet Songful Seahorse, and the group of Twirly Tiddlycopters (who also appear in "The Great Googenheist"). Another movie character whose name we never find out is the other Katsuma who appears in Jollywood. A magazine reveals she's a female and that she's friends with Katsuma but her name is never revealed.
** The giant at the top of the Great Moshi Beanstalk's name is never revealed, he just gets called "the Beanstalk Giant".
* NoodleIncident:
** Someone once asked Sweet Tooth their gender and it led to the asker being hospitalised and "wearing" a gobstopper. They were also the last person to ask Sweet Tooth's gender, at least to their face.
** One time, a Pretty Kitty (Lady Meowford's species) thought that the notion that Pretty Kitties were always right was wrong, but then was right all along.
** In "Cosmic Countdown", the Zoshlings (save for Dr C. Fingz) are afraid to do a "Cosmic Harmony" because something bad happened the last time they did one. What that bad thing was is never revealed.
** In "Spooktacular Spectacular", Captain Buck is reminded of a journey he had once Simon Growl goes missing, but does not go in further detail of how the two relate or what happened.
* NoseNuggets: Troll snot, moose snot and snot goblins are mentioned as a joke.
* NoSuchThingAsDehydration: Zigzagged. Drinks exist, but your monsters don't need them. They also treat drinking as equivalent to eating (both fill the health meter and have the same animation). Averted for their pets, the Moshlings, who do get thirsty.
* {{Not}}: When pretending to be evil in "Super Weapon Showdown", your monster remarks, "I'm sure I'll get up to lots more evil (not)."
* NotAllowedToGrowUp: Zigzagged. Most characters and playable monsters do not age, but baby Moshlings grow up, with the exception of Lady Goo Goo and Baby Rox's species (Glitzy Boo Hoos) who stay as babies. There's also Baby Tumteedums like Snookums, who age in reverse over the course of hundreds of years.
* NounVerber: There's a bird called the Chick Checker.
* OddReactionOut: In the song "Sneezing Channels", Shishi dances, and two panda judges smile, but the third yawns and rolls its eyes.

** Played with in "The Sweet Tooth Stomp", which is about Sweet Tooth's weaponized candy.
** "Bongo Colada" is an Ode to ''Drink'', about the titular drink and how it makes you burp.
* {{Omniglot}}: Most monsters can understand each other even when making different gibberish noises or one speaking English and the other speaking gibberish, however, this is shown to be a learned thing in the movie when Katsuma can understand English and Katsumanese but not the language of a shopkeeper in Jollywood, so most monsters are multilingual. Exaggerated for Sprockett, who can speak all the languages in the swooniverse.
* OneLetterPun: At one point, Gabby mentions talking to Dr. Strangeglove "2 C" what he wants.
* OneSteveLimit: When the fiction forgets a species name, they tend to refer to the species with the representative's name, causing two Waddling Floffles who are cousins to be called "Twaddle". More on the nose are some established Woolly Hoodoo character having variations on the name "Bill". Big Bad Bill, Big Chief Bill, Little Bad Bill and Crazy Bill.
-->Meet Bill! Meet The Other Bill! And Another One!
* OnlyOneFindsItFun: In one of the magazines, Sprinkles makes some muffins for a contest but accidentally gets them wet, so only Captain Buck likes them. Despite this, she wins, because ''no one'' liked everybody else's muffins.
* OurMonstersAreDifferent: Lampshaded in the theme song.
--> Just think of all the monsters that you've sung a song about. Most of them are scary, all they do is growl and shout. But Moshis are the monsters that you couldn't be without. Moshi, Moshi, Moshi Monsters!

** Baz Barnacle's TrademarkFavoriteFood is sand.
** Professor Purplex and their species (Owls of Wiseness) eat books.
* PeeveGoblins: When the server crashes, a message appears explaining that "a naughty server monster caused a crash".
* PepTalkSong: "We Can Do It" was originally sung to cheer up Katsuma, but then it evolved into a general upbeat song.
* PerfectHealth: Averted. Many characters cough and sneeze without getting sick, and Judder got the flu once even though it didn't really do much for the plot.
* PerpetualFrowner: Bubba, Frau Nau Brownkau, most of the Glumps save Fishlips and Podge, and the evil clouds are always seen frowning.
* PerpetualSmiler: Babs is always seen smiling.

** Missy Kix is said to be both a secret agent and a musician, and while she is shown making music, she's never shown being a secret agent.

** Marooned Five - Maroon Five
* PutOnABus: When Lady Goo Goo had to be written off, she was explained as having gone off somewhere.
* RandomlyGeneratedQuests: Characters can randomly give your character a quest three times a day. Said quests can be either playing a game, cleaning a boat, finding a lost Moshling, finding a lost ''item'', or answering a riddle. It all depends. The reward is also completely random and it can vary from an item to XP.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Baby Tumteedums age in reverse, so child and adolescent ones are actually elderly and baby ones are ''hundreds'' of years old.

* RedIsHeroic: The Super Moshis wear red capes and red masks.

* ShapedLikeItself: In the mission "Candy Catastrophe", a password is "password".

** Rover, the robot dog-car, and the creature that Simon Growl wears as a wig, have only "bark" in their speech bubbles when they bark. Thankfully, it seems that the monster SpeaksFluentAnimal and can understand them both.
* TheUnReveal: In the song "Welcome to Jollywood", Bobbi Singsong notes he has a mantra but has forgotten it, however, he doesn't mind. At the end of the song, he remembers his mantra and is about to say it but forgets again.
* TropicalIslandAdventure: Anything regarding Music Island, more specifically the '''Gombala Gombala Jungle'''. Furbert Snufflepeeps, Snuffy Hookums, Buster Bumblechops and Elder Furi got lost there and all ended up having something to do with the [[HollywoodNatives Hoodoos]] who are either joked or [[CapturedByCannibals played straight]] to form a [[CannibalTribe threat]]. The elements held by Gombala are a melting pot of cultures and places with the volcano KrakkaBlowa, the Green Hoodoos, and the limbo, which features [[HollywoodVoodoo "voodoo" practicing]] {{Witch Doctor}}s and {{Pirate}}s from stereotypical to the Caribbean (Haiti specifically).
* ThroughAFaceFullOfFur: Moshi Monsters has permanent blush stickers in the artstyle and a few occassions of emotional blush. When your Monster gets upset with you to the point of screaming, they turn red of anger. Buster Bumblechops said his whiskers turned red in the Collector's Guide books when his pants ripped. In the Music Island Mission books, Rofl, a chattering teeth toy, blushed "furiously" upon compliments and so did the robots Hubbs (star-struck) and Sprockett (anger). Threadie, a sockpuppet, blushes when their underwear is revealed upon doing a headstand. Furi blushes in embarrasment when Shoney burns his fur away. 766** In "The Curse of the Paw Wavin' Kitten", the ghost pirates try to keep Tingaling, but think she's cursed so they give her away to the player character.
* VagueAge: Regardless several Moshling species are described as "baby" (Rocky, Kissy, Boomer) you can assume they are adults in the sense of having their own agency, life and a past without parents/owners or a parental figure to guide them...and doing irresponsible things is just the norm in Moshi Monsters. Lady Goo Goo's species are eternal babies and Snookums species ages in reverse, meaning they are actually ancient. It became even weirder with the introduction of Baby Moshlings, where Baby Snookums would be older than regular Snookums.
* ValleyGirl: Cali and other Valley Mermaid. It's totally, like, there, in the species name!
* VillainSong: Two. "The Doctor Will See You Now" is about Dr Strangeglove's evil plans and his past and "Sweet Tooth Stomp" is about Sweet Tooth weaponizing candy.
* VirusAndCureNames: The "Glumping Potion" turns Moshlings (essentially the game's equivalent to pet animals) into [[AlwaysChaoticEvil Glumps]]. Its antidote is the De-Glumping Potion.

* VolcanoLair: A rare heroic example is the volcano where the Super Moshi HQ is situated in.
* VomitIndiscretionShot: At the end of the song "The I.G.G.Y. Chomp", [[BigEater I.G.G.Y.]], who's been eating all kinds of things non-stop throughout the song, gets sick and [[RainbowPuke throws up rainbow-coloured fluid onto the screen]].

* WeirdMoon: The moon has a face and appears to have several smaller moons orbiting it.
* WeirdSun: In addition to [[TheFaceOfTheSun having a face]], the sun also has numbers and letters around it like a compass.

** At the beginning of the song "Go Do the Hoodoo", also known as "Big Bad Bill and the Woolly Blue Hoodoos" or "Big Bad Bill is a Woolly Blue Hoodoo", Buster mentions that several of his friends kept disappearing in the jungle. It is never revealed who they are, why they disappeared or if they were ever found.
** In the "Spooktacular Spectacular" mission, Tamara mentions that her tail hurts and considers medicating herself with some remedy she has in her lab. We never find out what was causing the pain, or if she used the remedy.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Dr Strangeglove has a phobia of Musky Huskies. Roary Scrawl is also afraid of flying. Zigzagged for Whurley, who's said to be afraid of heights but has been up high a lot with no fear.
* WordSchmord: In the movie, when Furi and Katsuma start eating the sweets found on the ground, Poppet warns them that her journal says that the area they're in is extremely dangerous. Katsuma replies with "Journal, schmournal. It looks pretty sweet to me."
* WritingLines: In one of the magazines, Humphrey writes "I must not fall AsleepInClass" several times on a blackboard [[HypocriticalHumor before falling asleep in class anyway.]]

* YouMeanXmas: Moshi Monsters celebrate "Twistmas" instead of Christmas and "Pranksgiving" instead of April Fool's Day.
* YouNoTakeCandle:
** The Woolly Hoodoos occassionally. Big Bad Bill ranged from regular 'English' (Moshi Monsters, Moshling Rescue, most written fiction) to a few occassions in written fiction as "Me say it Party Time" to "Oobla Doobla" talk in the Music Stars book, which required Simon Growl to interpret. Big Chief Bill has that similar treatment and only wanted to commune in whistling in the movie and having no patience for people who could not, while clearly speaking in the end credits to Big Bad Bill, and speaking regular 'English' in the promotional Moshi Movie Mystery Mission.
** In "Monster Movie Mystery", Blinki needs to be charged up and says "Need energy".
** The spider who lives in Goosebump Manor.
---> '''Spider''': "Firebug, I catch. Too hot!"
** So does the aforementioned firebug.
---> '''Firebug''': "Hot sauce working. Strength returning. Ready to break free."
** The chief of the Woolly Blue Hoodoos also talks in poor grammar.
* YourHeadASplode: Cherry Bomb's head can explode and regenerate itself.
* ZombieGait: One dance, which you can set in the Dress-Up Room, is the "Zombie Shuffle", which involves the monster holding their arms (wings if they're a Luvli) out, shuffling, swaying from side to side, sticking the tongue out, and being cross-eyed.
