* ActingForTwo: Starting with Jesus' voice in "Just a Kiss", Todd is always doing the voice of God whenever He appears.
* ApprovalOfGod:
** EMF's official Twitter account praised Todd's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqkVYx4nQ-s One Hit Wonderland video on "Unbelievable"]].
** Kyper said on his Platform/YouTube channel that he enjoyed Todd's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA3PZ91LAAw&lc=UgzVNdjMnhPqpocBBl14AaABAg.8cAaz8txpxE8cBKfx89Z7a OHW on "Tic Tac Toe".]] He even appeared in the comment section, confirming that he's now a sales manager at an O'Reilly Auto Parts in Baton Rouge.
** Despite Todd's irreverent sense of humor about it, Jimmy Ray reposted Todd's review of "Are You Jimmy Ray" on his [[https://www.facebook.com/JimmyRayFanPage/posts/2965554846861024 Facebook page.]]
** Jyoti Mishra of White Town [[https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1599169502402736128 praised]] Todd's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRYO6-gNGzQ OHW video on "Your Woman"]]. [[https://twitter.com/AdamNBednarczyk/status/1599175961647325184 He also edited the description of the official music video to welcome Todd's fans coming in to check the song out.]]
* BlackSheepHit: Despite self-admittedly hating drama, Todd's video cataloguing James Somerton's frequent factual errors, done almost completely absent his usual style, has quickly become his second most popular video of all time, only behind "The Top Ten Worst Hit Songs of 2020". He's ruefully admitted that, despite disliking drama, it turns out he's good at it.
* TheCastShowoff: Every episode opens with him playing a snippet of the song in question on the piano. ''Trainwreckords'' episodes close in a similar fashion.
* ColbertBump:
** Before being picked up on TGWTG, when his third episode ("Party in the USA") was featured in ''Transmission Awesome'', his viewcounts went "from absolutely no hits to hundreds".
** His appearance in the ''WebVideo/AtopTheFourthWall'''s Music/{{KISS}} episode helped his videos to get [[http://twitter.com/shadowtodd/status/43427269741527042 more views]]. Todd even got [[http://twitter.com/shadowtodd/status/43446298187284481 his main page spot after it!]]
** The songs featured on ''One Hit Wonderland'' tend to get more attention every time Todd does an episode on them, with many comments on [=YouTube=] on music videos mention that Todd brought them there. In particular, a number of viewers credited Todd's video on "Oh Yeah" with helping them become fans of Music/{{Yello}}, a band whose international popularity was previously limited to a cult following in Europe. A case that was not the episode's subject was "Dog Police".
** Todd's ''Trainwreckords'' episode on ''Summer in Paradise'' by Music/TheBeachBoys received renewed attention when livestreamer, Beach Boys fan, and Music/RedVox frontman [[WebVideo/{{Vinesauce}} Vinesauce Vinny]] commended it during two of his livestreams in 2020 and 2023.
* ContentLeak: Around December 21, Todd's video for the "Top 10 WORST Hit Songs of 2023" was leaked as an unlisted video on Todd's Trainwreckords playlist under the false title of "Music/{{Nickelback}}'s ''No Fixed Address''". Likewise, the "Top 10 BEST Hit Songs of 2023" was accidentally revealed early at the bottom of the Pop Song Reviews playlist a couple of days before the video's proper release.
* {{Corpsing}}: In the crossover review of ''From Justin to Kelly'' with WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick, she epically fails to hold in a laugh when Todd bellows "NOW KISS!!" to the romantic leads. The review of ''Crossroads'' also cuts to the credits just as Lindsay starts laughing at Todd asking "Get out of my house!"
** During the ''One Hit Wonderland'' episode for "It's Raining Men", Todd is clearly chuckling while making Christmas versions of some past subjects.
* CreatorBacklash:
** [[https://youtu.be/jqNDQWPcyhE?t=50 He regrets being so hard in his review of the]] ''Series/HannahMontana'' movie of the "[[CommunityThreateningConstruction stop the evil real estate developer from building a mall]]" conflict, finding in retrospect that Hannah was correct that it was bad news.
** In the comments for the "Tik Tok" review, he says that he doesn't like how any of his Music/{{Kesha}} reviews turned out because he feels he comes across as sexist.
** He agrees with many of his watchers that his "Worst of 2013" was so unhappy that it bordered on depressing, blaming the short turnaround time and [[RealitySubtext coping with the loss of his grandmother]] as he was making it.
** Todd states at the beginning of his "Dear Future Husband" review that his attempts to not put his foot in his mouth when commenting on its themes of body positivity combined with his [[SoOkayItsAverage lukewarm opinion on the song in question]] left him unsatisfied with his "All About That Bass" review. The "Dear Future Husband" review was his way of making up for it (partially by making it clear that he is no longer lukewarm on "All About That Bass" -- [[spoiler:he straight-up hates it]]).
** Todd indicated in the "Top 10 Hit Songs of 2021" video that he had no idea why he put Music/LupeFiasco's "The Show Goes On" on his "Best of 2011" list.
** While he doesn't regret bashing the song, he did admit in the ''Trainwreckords'' episode on Music/RobinThicke's ''Paula'' that he regretted jumping on the bandwagon in calling "Blurred Lines" a rape anthem.
** Todd admitted he almost immediately regretted naming "More Than My Hometown" his number one song of 2020 after video surfaced of Music/MorganWallen saying the N-word.
** In regards to ''Trainwreckords'', Todd doesn't look back on his video on ''Music/BeHereNow'' by Music/{{Oasis}} with fondness, as he feels that he was far too harsh on the record in retrospect.
** Todd also isn't a fan of his ''Trainwreckord'' on ''Fairweather Johnson'' by Music/HootieAndTheBlowfish, as he felt that the video amounted to nothing but describing how the album was a SophomoreSlump compared to the band's debut release, with nothing truly disastrous dooming the record to actually talk about. In the episode on the Music/SpinDoctors' ''Turn It Upside Down'', Todd stated that he changed his standards for what classified as a ''Trainwreckord'', so that a ''Fairweather Johnson''-style review doesn't ever happen again.
** Beginning in the early 2020s, Todd has noted that he's been having a more difficult time making his Best and Worst Songs Lists of the year, as the changing landscape and pop culture in music has made it harder to pick and classify what amounts to a hit song, especially since many of them don't get decent radioplay anymore. Todd still makes the videos though, [[MoneyDearBoy if only because they tend to get a large amount of views]].
* CreatorCouple: He and Lindsay "WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick" Ellis dated for a while, and frequently helped script each other's videos.
* {{Defictionalization}}:
** Krin drew [[http://thebutterfly.deviantart.com/art/Todd-In-The-Shadows-179883302 Todd reviewing "Like a G6"]]. This gave her a job as his title artist, and caused Todd to go after the song and actually review it.
** An AprilFools [[http://thebutterfly.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3czio8 title card]] of Music/{{Rihanna}}'s "S&M" was later used for its respective review episode.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Todd originally used "I Knew You Were Trouble" by Music/TaylorSwift as his bumper music for the "Top Ten Worst Hit Songs of 2013" video. Shortly afterwards, Blip told him that he had to take out and replace the bumper music, and he could not use copyrighted music as bumper music from then on. However, in earlier 2015, Blip must have changed their minds, as the video had the bumper music back when it was still on their website.
* FlipFlopOfGod:
** In regards to "All About That Bass." In his full review of the song, he discusses its themes a lot more than the song itself, saying that [[SoOkayItsAverage it's only OK]]. Come his "Dear Future Husband" review, he's much less wishy-washy: he hates it and says he'd rather eat venomous scorpions than listen to it again. One year later, he said on Twitter that the song sounds great, but the lyrics are still awful (calling the song "a waste").
** Also with the Chainsmokers as a whole. Two songs of theirs have made different worst lists ("#Selfie" was #2 on his Worst of 2014 list and "Don't Let Me Down" was #4 on his Worst of 2016 list), but then "Closer" became the first song he's ever given a full review to actually top his year-end best list.
* FollowTheLeader: Todd admitted he started his show because after becoming a fan of other {{Video Review Show}}s, he noticed there was a gap of them on music and decided to fill that niche. In turn, many of the music reviewers who started in TheNewTens, such as Webvideo/TheDoubleAgent and WebVideo/DiamondAxeStudiosMusic, will admit Todd is an influence.
* MeaningfulReleaseDate: Todd's One-Hit Wonderland video on Aqua's "Barbie Girl" released the same day as the 2023 ''Barbie'' movie.
* MilestoneCelebration: Todd's ''One Hit Wonderland'' on "I Love College" commemorates his tenth anniversary of making videos.
* MoneyDearBoy:
** Since 2015, Todd has [[https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/561613214052405249 admitted]] that he has been splitting his "Worst" and "Best" videos of the year (starting with the ones from 2014) in two as a "purely monetary move". He even stated that, at the time, he didn't earn anything through mid-roll ads according to his contract with Blip. However, he always reminds his Patreon patrons that they can cap how many videos they pay for per month and opt out of the second video before going back to the regular schedule.
** In the first part of the top 10 worst hit songs of 2019 video, he mentioned that he had considered ending the worst lists in favor of focusing on what he likes but cited the fact that the worst lists tend to be his most popular videos (and thus bring in most income) and he needs the money[[note]]Just for comparison: as of february 2021, his list of best hit songs from 2019 sits at a combined 1.25 million views while the worst sits at over 1.6 million views[[/note]]. He did note however that he also keeps making them in order to record what he considers to be the lousy trends in pop music of each year for future reference; he admitted at the start of the 2011 Worst list that not doing a worst list in 2010 made that year seem incomplete.
* NoBudget: In the "Like a G6/Whip My Hair" commentary, he pointed out that most of his props (biggest being the microphone and mic stand) were from his (then) roommate. In the first video he released after moving out, Todd joked around the fact that his roommate probably got tired of him stealing his stuff... and his jokes.
* PromotedFanboy: Todd actually started his reviews with the goal of getting a small chance to join TGWTG.
* RealitySubtext: The opening for the ''Trainwreckords'' episode "Two the Hard Way" has a detailed and nuanced perspective on being in a celebrity couple and the specific problems that can arise from the experience. It is probably not irrelevant that Todd had been in a relationship with Creator/LindsayEllis that was publicly known and played up in their work.
* ReclusiveArtist: He's kind of a {{Downplayed}} example because we know his real name (Kenneth Munson - "Todd Nathanson" is a pseudonym) and he interacts with fans, but [[TheFaceless he always wears a mask over the top half of his face]], not wanting people to know what he looks like. This gimmick was apparently because he was working for a newspaper at the time and was considering a teaching job, but stuck to video reviews instead when they proved more sustainable. While he often joked about the ambiguity of his appearance and race, he appears unmasked in a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI4T6pvbIAY&ab_channel=LindsayEllis 2016 video]] shot by Creator/LindsayEllis, (he's visible during the "Norway" transition) and Ellis [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7aWz8q_IM4&ab_channel=LindsayEllis confirmed]] in a later video that Todd is half-Vietnamese.
* RuleThirtyFourCreatorReactions: Shortly after joining the site, Todd mentioned in an interview for ''Transmission Awesome'' [[http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/podcasts/tranmission-awesome/20544-episode-48-toddintheshadows (Episode 48)]] that he was quite looking forward to seeing what kind of depraved fanart and fanfiction involving him might crop up. And in "S&M", Todd mentions that sadomachism itself isn't so weird considering he's seen porn of himself.
* ScrewedByTheLawyers:
** When Todd originally uploaded the "Whatcha Say" review on [=YouTube=] in 2009, it was quickly removed thanks to the site's policies towards Warner Music properties. He was eventually forced to put it on Dailymotion.
** In January 2013, Blip told him that he couldn't use bumper music in his "Best of" and "Worst of" lists anymore. As long as he was talking specifically about the song it was fine, but being used to transition from one section to another was a no-no. In 2015, without an official explanation, the bumper music for both videos was restored, although Todd was forced to change the bumper music for his "Worst of 2014" videos, as it's likely it slipped through their radar.
** When Blip shut down in 2015, many of the full versions of some of Todd's videos were supposedly lost as they weren't available anywhere due to many reasons. Fortunately, he has been uploading many of them (reviews, ''One Hit Wonderland'', ''Cinemadonna'') to his [[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTSjmqzOO-P8HmtVW3t7sA YouTube account]]. As of 2017, he has been re-editing some to re-upload them back to [=YouTube=] (while not getting caught by the copyright bots). A few are only on his Platform/{{Vimeo}} channel.
** By 2019, Todd frequently griped on Twitter on how the algorithms and bots were blocking his videos on the double digits. One of those, a ''Trainwreckords'' video on Music/LaurynHill's ''Unplugged 2.0'', ended up being Patreon exclusive for over a month.
** The ''One Hit Wonderland'' episode on Skee-Lo's "I Wish" was removed from [=YouTube=] in early June 2023 due to a copyright claim from Altra Moda Music (where the official music video can be found on [=YouTube=]). Even after Todd did the dispute to get it back up, [=YouTube=] had [[https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1668360003550593024 backed it up]] to at least ten days, rather than the usual two.
** His "The Top Ten Best Hit Songs of 2023" video got blocked for about two weeks in February 2024 due to a copyright claim from Collab Asia Music, the management company of Fifty Fifty, whose song "Cupid" was #7 on the list.
** Really, this is inevitable given he's a music critic on [=YouTube=]. In order to demonstrate his points, he needs to play the songs, which activates the notoriously trigger-happy claim bots on any new video he releases. Even old videos aren't safe due to either the constant updates to the algorithm or fraudulent manual claims. He has admitted that he's funded by Patreon and sponsorships as all monetization goes to the covered artists, and [[https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1493775260147019777 cleaning copyright claims is a clusterfrack.]]
* ScheduleSlip:
** Since 2013, and while he never had a precise schedule, his "Best Of" and "Worst Of" lists have been uploaded at a late date than his then regular schedule of "within a week or two of the new year" he maintained until then. The ones for 2013 were uploaded a week and half a week later (respectively), while the ones for 2014 were released until the middle of January (for his "Worst Of" videos) and ''at the end of January'' (for his "Best Of" ones). At this point, expecting him to put them out any earlier is wishful thinking.
** Subverted with his "Worst Of" list for 2017, which was uploaded on January 1st, 2018. Todd lampshades the unusual timeliness in the video. His "Worst of" for 2018 also came out in December, while the Best Of still came out in January.
** Zigzagged with some of his reviews' releases in the second half of 2015. Due to Blip's shutdown, Todd had a four-month gap where he was uploading his videos to [=YouTube=] rather than to Channel Awesome, explaining why the gap between his ''Cinemadonna'' review of ''Film/DangerousGame'' (which was uploaded on the site on August 16th, 2015) and his "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)" review (which was uploaded on December 11th[[note]]It was posted on [=YouTube=] in August[[/note]]) exists. He acknowledged this incident when he uploaded the "Uma Thurman" review on January 7th, 2016, as it was accompanied by a description that said: "Todd posted this on [=YouTube=] last Halloween. It was on time at the time, I swear."
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** According to the commentary for "O.M.G.", Todd originally planned to feature cameos from other TGWTG contributors and give them good reason to hate him, such as trying to convert [[WebVideo/TheAmazingAtheist The Distressed Watcher]] to Mormonism and convincing [[WebVideo/AtopTheFourthWall Linkara]] that ''ComicBook/OneMoreDay'' was a good thing.
** He was going to review "California Gurls", but didn't want to admit that he loved it. His review of "Best Song Ever" seems to be a good example of what it would have been like.
** In the commentary for "Whip My Hair", Todd mentions he wanted to use a shot where the [[DodgyToupee Hannah Montana wig]] got stuck in the microphone after being thrown, but it wasn't good enough.
** Almost did a ''One Hit Wonderland'' for Music/JamesBlunt's "You're Beautiful", as part of his requests through Patreon. The buyer changed it to "Turning Japanese" at the last minute. He did, however, hint at doing the song in his OHW for "Lullaby", so this could still happen in the close future.
** The music in between Todd's picks for the "Top 10 Worst Songs of 2004" was [[https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/567117581036032002 supposed to be]] a Music/ThreeDaysGrace song, but he found the unintentional comedy of "Sorry 2004"'s chorus to be too good not to include.
** The "Best Of 2014" list was almost a top 9 until he heard "Love Me Harder."
** As explained in his review of "Am I The Only One", Todd had plans to cover right-wing rapper Tom [=MacDonald=] but realized while drafting the review that, thanks to [=MacDonald=]'s output being nothing but {{Anvilicious}}, politically inflammatory, musically bland {{Author Tract}}s, the review was devolving into a debunking video. Realizing he couldn't make an enjoyable review of a song by someone he increasingly saw as an insincere grifter rather than a genuine musician, he shelved the idea and, during this review, instead chose to contrast [=MacDonald=] with Aaron Lewis, an actual, legitimate musician who released an actual song that happened to be a right-wing {{Wangst}}-fest.
--->'''Todd''': His songs are essentially unreviewable because they barely even function as music; it's just a list of things that piss him off, listed off as dully and artlessly as possible. It's ''preachy''. Like, no-one uses that word to describe the ''anti''-woke squad, but it is; it's fucking preachy, and goddamn if I'm gonna be making the same mistakes as the guy I'm reviewing.
* WhyTheFandomCantHaveNiceThings: [[https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1291141479155609600 Todd stated]] the reason why he stopped doing [=Q&As=] was he got tired of most people only asking him about his music taste.

!!Miscellaneous Trivia
* As of 2023, only ten songs have both received a full review by Todd and also made the year-end best lists: Kanye West and Jay Z's "Ni**as in Paris" (#8 for 2012), Gotye and Kimbra's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (#6 for 2012), Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" (#8 for 2013), One Direction's "Best Song Ever" (#6 for 2013), Justin Timberlake's "Suit and Tie" (#5 for 2013), Mike Posner's "I Took a Pill in Ibiza (Seeb Remix)" (#4 for 2016), The Chainsmokers and Halsey's "Closer" (#1 for 2016), Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" (Honorable mention for 2017), Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus' "Old Town Road" (#9 for 2019), and Beyoncé's "Break My Soul" (#4 for 2022) Compare that to the songs he's given full reviews to that made the worst lists (as of 2019, 31, not counting the songs he would've included for 2010). [[note]] More stats: five of those songs topped their respective lists ("Tonight, Tonight" in 2011, "Wiggle" in 2014, "7 Years" in 2016, "Girls Like You" in 2018, and "Earth" in 2019);, 2022 is the only year where no reviewed songs appeared on the worst list, "Rico Suave" was the only one to previously be on ''One Hit Wonderland''; Kenny G, Eminem, and Beyonce are the only artists to appear on both a throwback list and a current list; the "Worst of 2011" featured the most previously-reviewed songs (six songs, more than half the list); "Scream and Shout" was the only one to receive a review after being featured on a worst list; "Anaconda" is the only song to be an honourable mention on [[SoBadItsGood both the best and worst lists]] for a year (2014), "Fuck You", "I Don't Fuck With You", and "thank u, next" are the only songs to appear on the best list of a year after being used as bumper music for the worst list (in the case of "Fuck You", the year ''after'' it was used for the worst list.), and Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" and Gayle's "abcdefu" are the only songs to be used as bumper music on lists that they appeared on - as a 2013 dishonorable mention in the former's case, and at 2022's #4 in the latter's.[[/note]]
** As of the Worst of 2017 list, Taylor Swift joins Rihanna as being one of the few artists to top both a best and worst list, with "Style" topping the Best of 2015 list and "...Ready for It?" topping the Worst of 2017 list; Rihanna remains the only artist to top both lists in the same year, with "Birthday Cake (Remix)" and "Take Care" topping the 2012 Worst and Best lists respectively. Taylor Swift also ties Beyonce's record for the most appearances by one artist on a worst list, with "Look What You Made Me Do" and her feature on Zayn's "I Don't Want to Live Forever" also making the cut. Another record she shares with Beyonce is having two of those songs in the top three, with "Look What You Made Me Do" coming in second, also making her the first artist to take both second and first place on a list.
** Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran would also appear in both the Best and Worst lists for a year (2022 and 2017 respectively) but unlike Rhianna they topped neither.
* As of the Best of 2022 list, Taylor Swift is the only artist to hit the #1 best spot in two different years - in 2015 for "Style" and in 2022 for "Anti-Hero".
* Three songs have topped the list despite not making the year-end Hot 100 for their respective years - "Uptown Funk" topped the 2014 list, despite not reaching its peak until 2015, "Green Light" topped the 2017 list after peaking at #19 and "Breathin'" topped the 2018 list in spite of making the 2019 list.
* Music/BillyRayCyrus is the only artist to get a ''One Hit Wonderland'' episode (for "Achy Breaky Heart") and a pop song review. (for his appearance on "Old Town Road")
* To date, the oldest song Todd has covered is "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett, released in 1962.
* The longest video on Todd's channel is "I Fact-Checked The Worst Video Essayist On [=YouTube=]", a take-down of the disgraced [=YouTuber=] James Somerton that runs for a whopping 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 30 seconds.
** The longest traditional episode is the ''Trainwreckords'' episode regarding Edgar Winter and Creator/LRonHubbard's "Mission Earth", clocking in at 43 minutes and 16 seconds.
** The longest Top 10 list is "Top Ten Worst Hit Songs of 2022" at 41 minutes and 42 seconds.
** The longest ''One Hit Wonderland'' is Los del Rio's "Macarena" at 25 minutes and 17 seconds.
** The longest ''Pop Song Review'' is "Am I The Only One" by Aaron Lewis at 25 minutes and 3 seconds.
