* AuthorsSavingThrow: Roy Thomas claims in an introduction in the first novel that Sonja's vow to only make love to a man who could defeat her but otherwise be chaste is a "conscious, willed thing. It is Sonja who sets the standard, and who will mate with the man who can best her with sword or axe. No rape here, just a set of standards strange to our modern eyes."
* CreatorsFavorite: Roy Thomas has expressed this about Red Sonja.
* DearNegativeReader: Roy Thomas said he's had to defend his BestHerToBedHer decision to literally generations (as in multiple incarnations of twenty years) of Red Sonja fans since the Seventies.
* DivorcedInstallment: The owners of Red Sonja are no longer the same people who own the rights to Franchise/ConanTheBarbarian. Ironically, Dynamite Comics have the right to her character but not Conan and Marvel has the rights to Conan but not to Red Sonja.
* ExiledFromContinuity: A soft example with Red Sonja no longer owned by Marvel comics.
* GodDoesNotOwnThisWorld: Roy Thomas has done work for Red Sonja in comic, novel, and nonfiction form but doesn't nor never has owned her.
* LineToGod: Roy Thomas is remarkably easy to get to talk to about Red Sonja as many interviewers have found out. He has answered every question about her that fans have posed at cons, online, or via interviews.
* NetworkToTheRescue: Dynamite helped save the character from modern obscurity.
* PromotedFanboy: Gail Simone said that Red Sonja was this to her.
* WordOfGay: Red Sonja had her bisexuality confirmed by Gail Simone even though the comics didn't leave much to chance.
* WordOfGod: Both Roy Thomas and Creator/GailSimone have extensive things to say about their interpretations of the character as well as runs.

* BillingDisplacement: Creator/ArnoldSchwarzenegger is featured more prominently in the posters and the like, despite playing a secondary character. In the French and Italian dubs, Kalidor is even the movie's title instead of Red Sonja.
* BoxOfficeBomb: Budget, $17.9 million. Box office, $6,948,633. It was released on the same day as Film/BackToTheFuture1, to add insult to injury.
* CastTheRunnerUp: Sandahl Bergman, aka Valeria from Film/1982, was initially cast as Sonja, but she decided to play Gedren instead.Ironically enough, in the Japanese dub of the film, Creator/KeikoToda voiced both Sonja in this film and Valeria in the dub of Film/1982.
* CompletelyDifferentTitle: Known in France as Kalidor, la légende du talisman ("Kalidor, the Legend of the Talisman"), and as Yado in Italy (Kalidor's name in this version).
* CreatorKiller: The people who wrote the movie's screenplay, George [=MacDonald=] Fraser and Clive Exton, saw their cinematic careers get liquidated by Red Sonja's implosion. Fraser wrote one more film, but Exton never worked another film at all and returned to British television, and remained there for the rest of his life. As for director Richard Fleischer, he directed just one more film himself then retired.
* CreatorBacklash: Creator/ArnoldSchwarzenegger has called this the worst movie he has ever been in, and joked that he disciplined his children by threatening to make them watch it ten times as punishment if they ever misbehaved, and that it must have worked because his kids never gave him any problems.
* CrossDressingVoices: In the French dub, Prince Tarn is voiced by Belgian voice actress Creator/JackieBerger.
* DivorcedInstallment: Creator/ArnoldSchwarzenegger was supposed to be playing Conan, as he had appeared in Red Sonja's comic debut. The film however did not have the rights to the name, so he was renamed Kalidor.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Creator/ArnoldSchwarzenegger was originally supposed to have nothing more than a cameo role, but the producers lost confidence in Creator/BrigitteNielsen to hold the movie solely on her shoulders. Arnold ended up spending several weeks doing what was intended to be a one-week shoot, and later learned that, through clever camera angles and multiple takes, he had been portrayed as the movie's co-star, much to his irritation. It has been suggested by some though that the producers had intended to do this from the start as they had originally tried to make a third Conan movie but couldn't get the rights, and that Arnold was actually tricked
* GenreKiller: This movie, along with Film/ConanTheDestroyer, was widely credited with killing the SwordAndSorcery genre in media for quite some time. Dragon magazine commented, "Conan the Destroyer may have killed the franchise, but this movie put a stake through its heart and stuffed its mouth with garlic."
** Within just a few years after its release, the claim of it killing anything was proven to be completely untrue. SwordAndSorcery movies were being made well into the early 90s en masse and then simply drifted into different themes without much issue. Conan The Destroyer has been meanwhile rehabilitated and Red Sonja is simply considered to be a bad, but unoffensive movie.
* MissingTrailerScene: The trailer contains scenes from the prologue that are only briefly seen in flashback; Sonja being left to die in her burning home, getting saved by her dying brother and Gedren speaking to her soldiers and slaves before her disfigurement.
* RomanceOnTheSet: Arnie and Creator/BrigitteNielsen have admitted that during production, they had a very heated affair, which even inspired her to divorce her then-husband, though they opted not to continue once they returned to America, where Arnie had already begun dating Maria Shriver. Nielsen would then meet and marry Creator/SylvesterStallone a few months after the movie's release.
* ScrewedByTheLawyers: Michael Moorcock had his lawyers prevent his famous evil weapon Stormbringer from appearing in the film unauthorised.
* StarDerailingRole: Creator/BrigitteNielsen's critically panned performance, along with her turn in Film/RockyIV (which led to her getting a Worst New Star award at the Razzies) stalled Hollywood's attempts to launch the model as a film star. She would however enjoy more success in Italy.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Creator/EileenDavidson (then of Film/TheHouseOnSororityRow and Series/TheYoungAndTheRestless fame) was the runner-up to play the title role.

* SavedFromDevelopmentHell:
** A new film adaptation of Red Sonja has been discussed for several years but the failure of Film/2011 in 2011 shelved it. Following the success of Film/2017 in 2017, the idea was resurrected, with Creator/BryanSinger set to direct... then was put on hold once again in 2019 due to the sexual assault allegations toward Singer.
** In June 2019 it was announced that Singer had been replaced by Series/Transparent creator Joey Soloway. He quietly dropped from it afterwards, but he'll still retain writer and producer credits.
** M. J. Bassett was then tapped to direct, and shooting of the film started in August 2022. The cast includes Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz as Sonja, Creator/WallisDay, Creator/RobertSheehan and Martyn Ford.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/RoseMcGowan was a frontrunner to play Red Sonja in a remake in the 2000s, and there was even artwork produced of her as the character. She however suffered serious injuries while filming Film/PlanetTerror that meant she could be paralyzed in her right arm if it was hurt again - and the physical nature of the role meant she had to drop out of it.
** Creator/HannahJohnKamen was set to play Sonja but dropped out in March 2022.
