Context Trivia / MoralOrel

Go To

* ActingForTwo:
** Clay, Stopframe, and Censordoll are voiced by Creator/ScottAdsit, all of which interacted with each other.
** Orel and his girlfriend Christina are voiced by Creator/CarolynLawrence.
* {{Main/Blooper}}: In "The Best Christmas Ever," when Orel is dragging Shapey to the pizza place, Shapey is clearly still wearing his pajamas under his coat. When the scene cuts to Shapey running to the church's nativity scene, he's wearing clothes (or at least jeans and sneakers).
** In "The Blessed Union," Stephanie shows Orel the ring she's going to pierce him with. In the closeup shot, Stephanie is holding the ring in her right hand, but in the wide shot, she's holding it in her left hand.
* TheCastShowoff: While Bloberta supposedly cannot sing to save her life, Britta Philips' other characters, Stephanie and Junior Christein's singing voice, all can sing well and get the chance to show it off.
* CreatorBacklash: “Orel’s Movie Premiere” seemingly was the least favorite episode of the crew and Adult Swim as a whole. It was part of “The Worst of Adult Swim” marathon which aired the worst episodes of all the Adult Swim shows, and even the promo that aired for its original air date slightly discouraged viewers from watching it.
-->'''Announcer''': So I wouldn’t cancel any plans for this one, but if you’re free, it would be nice if you watched.
* CreatorBreakdown: Dino Stamatopoulos went through a rough divorce towards the end of the second season. The toll this took on him is evident throughout Season 3, particularly Clay's rant in "Sacrifice".
* CreatorsFavorite: Carolyn Lawrence mentioned back in a 2018 interview with Vulture that Orel is one of her favorite roles, going as so far as to try to pitch ideas to Dino Stamatopoulos just so she can continue voicing him.
* CrossDressingVoices:
** Orel Puppington is voiced by Carolyn Lawrence. Shapey was voiced by Tigger Stamatopoulos (Dino's daughter).
** On the other end of the spectrum, Ms. Censordoll is voiced by two male actors. First Jay Johnston, and then Creator/ScottAdsit.
** Tigger Stamatopoulos voices Block and Shapey.
** Jeff Bryan Davis voices Joe's older half sister.
* {{Dedication}}: "[[WhamEpisode Nature]]" is dedicated to Creator/JohnCassavetes. It's not hard to see why. Grounded has one to journalist/blogger Adam Finley, who was one of the people who interviewed Dino about the show when it first came out. The series finale itself is dedicated to Dino's father, Tom Stamatopoulos.
* ExecutiveMeddling:
** A problem that plagued the show throughout its entire run, such as a rushed production schedule for the first season (Stamatopoulos having to write the entire first season in ''a month''), airing the first season finale "The Best Christmas Ever" as the series premiere against Stamatopoulos' wishes and to the confusion of viewers at home, Standards and Practices delaying episodes for content and Adult Swim giving an implicit thumbs up towards the DarkerAndEdgier third season, only to cancel it and reduce the episode order after showing a rough cut of "Alone" and the script for an episode called "Raped".
** Jokes made about sexuality were a lot harder to get approved of, which Dino speculated is because Adult Swim is based in the Southern US, which is mostly right wing compared to most of the US. Some of those jokes were replaced with racial jokes, which Adult Swim had no problem with.
* FandomLifeCycle: The show started Stage 1 back in 2005 due to Adult Swim screwing with the first season's scheduling, which gave off a bad first impression. Moved to Stage 2 in 2006 to the show's cancellation in 2008 for the people who stuck around or started later. It would quickly bounce back to Stage X in the New 10s and the 2020s due to retrospective videos and reuploads of clips from the series to Website/YouTube.
* FlipFlopOfGod: When asked if WesternAnimation/DaveyAndGoliath was an influence on the show, Dino goes back and forth between: "No it's based on Series/LeaveItToBeaver" and "Yes but it wasn't a primary influence on the show." The only thing he's always maintained is that "Davey is an asshole."
* IronyAsSheIsCast: Bloberta, who may not be such a great singer, is played by Britta Phillips--better known as the singing voice of WesternAnimation/{{Jem}}, and a musician in her own right with the band Luna along with co-composing for the film ''Film/TheSquidAndTheWhale''.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Adult Swim has refused to release the remaining two-thirds of season two or season three on DVD after the first volume set didn't sell well. This is bad since these uncollected episodes consist of the show's high point.
** In a bit of subversion though when the show was canceled and Adult Swim did a massive month long marathon/dumping of the third season (entitled "44 Nights of Orel"), Dino was allowed to do a series of promos for the third season where he implored fans to watch and record, as far as telling them that Adult Swim will probably NEVER, EVER reair the series. But the critical praise and high ratings that the last season got has managed to secure future reairings of the series for fans, in addition, the series was always available on [=iTunes=].
** The entire series was available to stream on Creator/{{Hulu}} in the U.S. from May 2015 before it was removed in April 2020. The series later moved to Creator/HBOMax on September 2020. Thankfully, the series reruns every once in a while. Website/YouTube and Dailymotion had unofficial uploads of the show with the Beforel Orel special being on the director's Platform/{{Vimeo}} account before all but the special were removed due to being copyright striked by Turner[=/=]Warner Bros.
* NoExportForYou: The series had DVD releases, but only volume one ever made it to the United States (covering season one and a tiny bit of season 2), due to poor sales. In Australia, the entire series was released in three volumes, and even had a complete series set filled with special features, that was only released in Region 4. And even ''that'' is out of print now.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Arthur's younger self is voiced by Dino Stamatopoulos and older self in ''Beforel Orel'' is voiced by Joe Unger.
** Creator/JayJohnston voiced Coach Stopframe and Censordoll until Season 3 when they were voiced by Creator/ScottAdsit
* OutOfOrder: The Christmas episode was meant to be the first season finale but was aired as a pilot. Adult Swim did this because of their Standards and Practices having issues with the show, and they decided to air the most blasphemous episode first; if this episode would have no problems with them, then they [[TemptingFate wouldn't have a problem with the rest of the show.]] Much later in Season 3, that seasons second episode, "Grounded", aired first, but this was all part of Adult Swim's April Fools prank that year (airing stuff that was already in the middle of production).
* PlayingAgainstType: Carolyn Lawrence is most notable for voicing the headstrong [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants Sandy Cheeks]] and the sassy [[WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfJimmyNeutronBoyGenius Cindy Vortex]]. Orel Puppington, by contrast, is far more innocent and emotionally vulnerable.
* ProductionPosse: Dino, Jay Johnston, and Scott Adsit all first met on ''Series/MrShow'' in the mid90s, with Mike Lazzo specifically hiring them because he loved Mr. Show.
* RealLifeRelative: Shapey Puppington and Block Posabule were both voiced by Tigger Stamatopoulos, the daughter of creator Dino Stamatopoulos.
* RenewedBeforePremiere: Became a bit of a double-edged sword for this show. It was such a success Creator/AdultSwim ordered season three before season two was even halfway done. Then the executives actually SAW season three and were so disturbed by it that they cut the order in half and canceled the show afterward.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: Invoked and Inverted. Adult Swim cut down the final season down to just 13 episodes following the disastrous results of "Alone", but still gave it a fair bit of advertising. Among the biggest was the previously mentioned "44 Nights of Orel", a marathon that ran through the first two seasons, interspersed with the premieres of Season 3. Dino has also stated several times that Mike Lazzo, the executive vice president in charge of Adult Swim, still has interest in producing more specials--the only problem being Dino being more interested in the darker aspects of the show, compared to the first season, [[MagnumOpusDissonance which Lazzo considered the best.]]
* UnspecifiedRoleCredit: Every episode ended with the voice actors listed without specifying which characters they voiced. "The Best Christmas Ever" does list the voice actors for Orel and his family, but no one else.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Stephanie was originally going to be a gay man until Carolyn Lawrence suggested she should be female.
** One of the few known things that would have happened during the original plan for the show was for Orel's grandpa to die and have Orel become depressed, listening to ''Christian Goth'' music.
** Season 3 was cut short by 7 episodes, of which the writers had already fully plotted out and scripted. Some elements that would have been explored further included: Clay and Bloberta pursing their affairs with Censordoll and Officer Papermouth respectively, Orel continuing his relationship with Christina, Reverend Putty reconciling his relationship with Florence, Sculptham coming to terms with her sexual assault, and Shapey and Block maturing into more well adjusted children.
** The show was supposed to be 5 seasons in total, 20 Episodes each, and the title would have been changed to "Moralton" by season 4.
** The show itself was supposed to be a live action sitcom, with Music/IggyPop as the kid that would eventually be Orel. Iggy was too buzzed out of his mind to care or notice the script, and it wasn't until Mike Lazzo read the script that he suggested going to Shadow Machine (who was producing ''WesternAnimation/RobotChicken'' at the time) where he fell in love with stop motion animation. Thus retooling the show with the then contemporary theme of evangelicalism over America that was prevalent at the time. The original script that was given to Iggy Pop was retooled to the season 1 episode "Waste".
** Creator/DanHarmon revealed at a panel with Dino that he pitched a continuation where years later, Orel is a middle aged man with a daughter who’s not religious. The execs at Adult Swim liked it enough to ask him to have Dino get back to them, but Dino stopped it in its tracks because he realized that it was essentially turning Orel into an AuthorAvatar of himself, and that was the last thing he wanted.
** John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats was interested in writing exclusive songs for the series, and had the series continued beyond Season 3, Dino would have accepted the offer.
* WordOfGod:
** Dino confirmed that Clay is more or less a version of himself had he never gotten a divorce and instead just became stuck and miserable with his ex.
** Despite the similar art styles, the show was never meant to be a parody of WesternAnimation/DaveyAndGoliath. Originally, after the decision to move away from the original concept of “Iggy”, the next idea was to actually use Marionette puppets. However, since Film/TeamAmericaWorldPolice had just come out around the same time, Dino visited Shadow Machine who at the time was in the middle of starting WesternAnimation/RobotChicken, when he decided to make it stop-motion instead. Dino even tried to watch some “Davey and Goliath” afterwards, and realized that it had little in common with Orel besides similar art design.
* WrittenByCastMember: Scott Adsit wrote a number of episodes, including the infamous "Turn the Other Cheek" episode.
